Water in The Rock, or The Rock in the Water? This newletter is lengthy, so let it serve for two Shabbats. There will be no newsletter next week due to visiting Jacob's Tent services Up to the Mountain. In the last several newsletters, we've taken a close look at the many prophecies embodied in Yeshua's walk on the water of the Galilee in Matthew Fourteen. How different was Yeshua's perception of the walk than Peter and the other disciples'! For the one who was the water in the Rock…and the Rock…in the wilderness for the Israelites, it was no problem to also be the Rock in the water to his students. “He alone spreads out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea…” (Job 9:8) Sometimes it helps to put the Gospel of Matthew back into its original Hebrew text. While no one is certain of where that text might be (only fragments are known to survive), there is a version whose provenance can only be traced so far back in Jewish history, yet it is quite accurate considering it was used by a less-than-friendly readership. It is the Shem Tov's Evan Bohan version from the Fourteenth Century. The differences between the Hebrew and Greek texts are not drastic. To Yeshua, the stroll on the Galilee during the storm was perceived much differently than his students, who perceived it as dangerous, chaotic, and "contrary." In the Hebrew Matthew version, the word for contrary is neged, or opposing, opposite. Neged has a good side, too, for Adam's wife Chavah was his ezer kenegdo, or “helper opposite him,” which brings balance. When opposition is a helper, it is because in spite of the opposition, the overall purpose is to achieve unity walking in the Word. The opposite helper pulls the weight of the yoke beside the other, ensuring the burden does not get dragged in endless circles, but can go straight. For example, grace and truth are not opposed to one another. One cannot be practiced at the expense of the other. In Yeshua, they work together. Sarah wasn't such a good helper when she suggested Hagar as a solution to their problem, but she was a good helper when she advised Abraham to send away Ishmael, who had not internalized the righteousness of his father and threatened the inheritance of Isaac. The disciples did not see the waves of the storm as their ezer kenegdo, or helping opposition, but as a destructive force. They were just rowing in circles in the middle of the Galilee, taking on water. Galilee does indeed imply circles in Hebrew, like a roll or spool, and a wave is a gal, pronounced gahl (not to be confused with other gals). This is perhaps what it has in common with the “circle of the earth,” and why from Isaiah's prophecy, Galilee came to be called “Galilee of the Nations.” In Jewish tradition, Moses hid the Rock that followed them in the wilderness in the bottom of the Galilee before he died, which explains why Yeshua would have made his early home near the Galilee and begun his ministry there. The Rock was both the water in the Rock, the Rock, and the Rock in the water. It also explains how Yeshua's ministry prepared the way for the nations to hear the Gospel message from his disciples: “But there will be no more gloom for her who was in anguish; in earlier times He treated the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali with contempt, but later on He shall make it glorious, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. The people who walk in darkness will see a great light; those who live in a dark land, the light will shine on them.” (Is 9:1-2) As the region of the Galilee represented the Gentile nations in the time from Isaiah to Yeshua's ministry, so the disciples were dispersed to proclaim the Light of the Word Yeshua to the scattered of Israel as well as the Gentiles who dwelled among the raging waves of tormenting wickedness. Even as we are rescued, we are tested of the Ruach HaKodesh, the Holy Spirit,

This Shabbat is Shabbat Parah. It is the third of four special Shabbats begiining with Shekalim, Zachor, this week parah and then HaChodesh. Explain each Yesterday morning we were discussing the Keli Yakar - R Shlomo Ephraim ben Aaron Luntschitz b'1550 - served as the Rabbi of Prague from 1604 to 1619 and is buried next to the Maharal who passed away ten years prior – and his comments on the Red Heifer Adinah then sent me an article by CBS news and I looked to see who else is reporting on the same. We have all seen stories of Red Heifers – apparently there is a farm in Texas … In September 2022, five red heifers were flown from the state of Texas to the land of Israel. Farm owned by a Christian who raises Red Angus looking for the Parah Adumah – Since that time, one of them has been disqualified, but the other four continue to be candidates for a red heifer sacrifice. As I discussed last week, there was 'a practice run of the purification ceremony' in 2023. But an official ceremony must be conducted before the heifers get too old to be used for such a sacrifice. So will a red heifer be sacrificed in Israel in 2024? Accordingto CBS News, a 'massive altar' has already been constructed. I was absolutely floored when I first saw that. A red heifer sacrifice would need to happen on the Mount of Olives, and the land where the sacrifice would take place is owned by Rabbi Yitshak Mamo. According to those working on the project, the ceremony of the red heifer needs to be performed on the Mount of Olives, and in a place that would have looked directly into where the Temple stood. The land directly east of the Temple Mount, purchased 12 years ago, meets both of those standards. Rabbi Yitshak Mamo owns that land on the Mount of Olives. R' Mamo is with Uvne Yerusalim, a group that preserves Israel's history and works to educate future generations. Concerning the specifics of the land, he told CBN News, 'It had to be exactly at the front of the place that the priest that made this ceremony can see the Holy of the Holy Place.' But the clock is ticking. If the heifers get too old, they will no longer qualify.

He unfortunately was killed in battle.   At his shloshim, a moving kumzitz led by Shlomo Katz began with people singing softly in their seats and evolved into heartfelt t'filah with people standing and swaying, arm in arm, many with tears in their eyes. Jennifer interrupted the singing in the middle of a song and commented that she noticed too many sad faces in the room. She explained that this was not meant to be an evening of crying. It was meant to be an evening to honor Binyamin and open our hearts using songs for t'filah. She begged that people open the gates of Shamayim with t'filah b'simchah, even with the pain. Tuesday, 23 May 2023   Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, Acts 17:2   The previous verse noted that Paul and Silas had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia and had arrived at Thessalonica, noting that there was a synagogue of the Jews there. Now, the narrative continues with, “Then Paul, as his custom was.”   Rather, the verb is a perfect participle. Though a little clunky, it more rightly reads, “And Paul, as customized.” He was habitual in this regard, always following the same pattern which was that he “went in to them.”   As seen elsewhere, such as in Acts 13 and 14, Paul made it his habit to go into the synagogue of whatever city he traveled to. Being a rabbi, he would be respected for his training and sought after concerning his knowledge. This is no different than visiting pastors in churches today. They may be tested to check their doctrine, asked specific questions about various matters, and even asked to say a word at times. As for Paul in Thessalonica, it next says, “and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them.”   Paul's reasoning would be concerning Christ Jesus. He certainly took the time to carefully show all the key details concerning what the ministry of the Messiah would be. The word translated as “reasoned” is dialegomai. It comes from dia, through, and legó, to say. According to HELPS Word Studies, it “is the process of giving and receiving information with someone to reach deeper understanding – a "going back-and-forth" of thoughts and ideas so people can better know the Lord (His word, will).”   As for these reasonings, it was just not something made up in his own head or that was passed down from other rabbis as tradition. Rather, he reasoned with them “from the Scriptures.” As Scripture is inspired by God, it is the ultimate source for people to know the Lord. Many of the things prophesied about the Messiah can only be clearly understood after the coming of Jesus. Even today, those who reject Jesus cannot clearly understand what is being conveyed concerning the role of the Messiah.   Thus, one may carefully reason from Scripture, aligning what it says with what Jesus has done. In this type of exchange of thoughts, if a person is willing to accept what is presented, there will be the illumination of Scripture so that it is properly understood. This is what Paul strove to do over those three Sabbaths at the synagogue in Thessalonica.   Life application: Paul took his time and reasoned from the Scriptures in order to bring understanding to those he spoke with. One cannot reasonably reason from Scriptures if those Scriptures are manipulated. It is the job of a translator to do what? Yes, you in the third row. Correct! The job of a translator is to translate.   In the case of the verb of this verse, often translated as “his custom was,” which is a noun and a verb, a verbal form was used to get a clearer sense, “And Paul, as customized.” The meaning here is not that much different and anyone would get the sense of what was being said from either translation. However, can you see any marked and purposeful change between these versions of Acts 17:2 - According to his usual practice, Sha'ul went in; and on three Shabbats he gave them drashes from the Tanakh, (CJB)   And as he did bekvius (regularly), Rav Sha'ul joined their minyan, and on shloshah Shabbatot, he gave them drashot from the Kitvei HaKodesh, (OJB) And according to his practice, Sha'ul went in unto them, and for three Shabbathoth was reasoning with them from the Scriptures. (Hallelujah Scriptures)   Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,   Some of the differences are the use of Jewish wording to convey the same idea, making it simpler for a Jewish person to understand. That is an acceptable way of making something more understandable for a target audience. Obviously, if a person was never Jewish, it would be pointless to try to learn all new terminology just to understand what the Bible is saying.   However, in all three of these Jewish Bibles, there is a purposeful manipulation of the name Paul. As noted above by the person in the third row, the job of a translator is to translate, not manipulate. Paul's Hebrew name, Saul, is stated 21 times in Acts 1-12. In those same chapters, the name Paul is never stated. However, in Acts 13-28, the name Paul is mentioned 132 times, whereas Saul is mentioned twice and only as an explanation of past events.   There is a reason for this that is completely obliterated by these manipulated Bibles. To change the name Paul to Saul as they have done is to change Scripture. As noted above, one cannot reasonably reason from Scriptures if those Scriptures are manipulated. God has revealed the redemptive narrative in His word. This includes the renaming of Saul to Paul.   When people with a set and perverse agenda purposefully twist what He has presented, it undermines the very intent of what God has put forth. The changing of Paul's name is not an irrelevant issue. It is a key and central point of doctrine when rightly studied and understood. Further, combining a study of the uses of Peter's name in relation to Paul's name gives an even deeper understanding of what God is presenting. These things can no longer be rightly understood, studied, and discussed when the Scriptures have been so thoroughly distorted.   Don't get caught up in the “Hebrew Hype” that all things Jewish are better than what has been presented for the past two thousand years. God has given us His word. When it is translated, the translator is to translate, not manipulate. Pay heed to this. Study to show yourself approved. And don't get sidetracked by those who purposefully try to sway you away from what is proper.   Heavenly Father, Your word is far too precious to be marginalized, twisted, manipulated, trifled with, or distorted. Keep us from unsound translations of it and keep us from unsound teachers of it. May we carefully and tenderly consider this precious and sacred word all our days. Amen.

Returning to the studio to help us kick off the celebration is AJC's CEO, Ted Deutch. Ted, welcome back to People of the Pod.    Ted Deutch: It's great to be back. Thanks, Manya.   Manya Brachear Pashman: So I want to start with a progress report. You have been CEO now for I'm going to count on my fingers here October, November, December -seven months, now?    Ted Deutch: Now, you've got to get onto your second hand.   Manya Brachear Pashman: Which means this time last year, you were still a congressman. So what's remarkably different about your life now, your mission and your day to day approach to that mission?   Ted Deutch: Well, the day to day work is very different. And I'd start with the most obvious: I came from a place that was, by definition, political, everything about it was driven by politics. I worked really hard to focus on the issues that mattered to me and my community. But there were always political considerations. Now, as the CEO of American Jewish Committee, I have the incredible honor of spending everyday working with a supremely talented team here at AJC, remarkable volunteers and lay leaders with one mission, and that's to think about how we can do more to enhance the well being of the Jewish people and Israel and advance democratic values. And every issue I work on, I'm passionate about, and it matters to me, it matters to my core. It affects who I am, and my family and my community. And that's a big difference. And it's just a big privilege to be able to spend my days this way now.   Manya Brachear Pashman: So what have some of the milestones been so far?   Ted Deutch: AJC as the global advocacy organization for the Jewish people has been doing incredible work in the United States and all around the world for more than a century. But to bring those two things together, as we did in our advocacy, with the Biden administration, to urge them to create a national action plan to combat antisemitism, seeing them move forward, and announce that plan and then bringing to the White House special envoys to combat antisemitism from around the world that we had helped create. And as we worked in other countries, as they prepared their own action plans to confront anti semitism and foster Jewish life, this was an opportunity to bring their experiences together so that they could share their insight into what's worked and what hasn't in their own countries. So that our own administration can come up with something meaningful as we seek to strike back against antisemitism. That is something that I'm really proud of. And being able to travel around the country and around the world as I have to meet with Jewish communities, in all parts of America and all corners of the world and to be reminded of just how much we have in common.  It sounds obvious and probably silly to say, but when you're when you're speaking with university students in Paris and you realize that the things that they're focused on, the challenges they face and antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment that they deal with is not unlike what our campus leaders in America are dealing with and, and knowing that we can bring them together as we will at our Global Forum. Or spending time with communities from across Latin America. And when we all got together in Mexico City, to talk about the ways to ensure a strong future for the Jewish community. And meeting LFT students, our high school program, Leaders for Tomorrow, the high school students that we're helping to train to be the leaders of the next generation, and be inspired by by what they've already taken from this program, whether it's in Atlanta in Chicago, or any of the other places that I've had the opportunity to travel. There's a lot that we've done, there's a lot that I'm really excited about. And as you point out, just barely been seven months.   Manya Brachear Pashman: Shortly after you began, there was kind of a torrent of antisemitic incidents, rhetoric that was on social media, in the celebrity world. And I'm curious if that kind of took you aback because it happened right after you started your position. And do you feel like you've made some progress in that sphere, as well, in terms of educating celebrities, creative artists, and the like?   Ted Deutch: It happened immediately after almost as if it were planned to happen right when I started. But, I've been clear about this, as horrific as that was- there was a national conversation that started that I don't remember seeing before and to have the chance to talk about the Jewish community and antisemitism and the issues that AJC works on, on national television on a regular basis, and help elevate the importance of these issues for the broader community was an important moment for me and for AJC, and for the Jewish community to really focus on what we do, and the fact that our call to action against antisemitism is a document that the rest of the country can look to Jews and non-Jews alike for ways that they can be involved to combat antisemitism.  And since all of this happened, and since we've found ourselves in the middle of this conversation, there has been a real interest in looking at all the ways that government and education and law enforcement and corporate America and social media can all play their part. And yes, there's a special opportunity for the creative community.  I was in Los Angeles recently with Doug Emhoff, with the second gentleman, and we did a program for executives and agents and music and studio executives, to talk about antisemitism, the things that that they can do, all with the understanding that content really drives so much of what we think about in our country, and we want people to be aware of this rising antisemitism and make sure that there's an understanding as well of what the Jewish community is and what the Jewish community isn't, and to be careful not to advance antisemitic tropes and to reflect the diversity of the Jewish community and to acknowledge the great diversity within Israel. These are, these are conversations that are taking place there, they're taking place with media, I've met with a number of media outlets, again, just to make sure that some of these issues that we know are so challenging and sometimes complicated, deserve a full airing, and we need to start with what is true about our community and about the things we care about. We've worked hard to accomplish that.   Manya Brachear Pashman: And I just just want to remind listeners that it's Kanye West. It was the comments from Kanye West that just kept coming. And yeah, you're right. It was days after you started your job that we were addressing that.  It was Congress that named the month of May Jewish American Heritage Month or JAHM, as we affectionately call it around here. How did you celebrate it on Capitol Hill?   Ted Deutch: Well, there were receptions and we usually made a statement in Congress. We looked for opportunities to help elevate the issue. This is an important opportunity for the community. It happens every May. Most people I'm not embarrassed to say–although I will be next year if this is still the case. But I'm not embarrassed to say that most people didn't know that May was Jewish American Heritage Month. They're obviously familiar with the steps Congress took to create Black History Month and Women's History Month and so many others. But here we are at this moment. And Congress, when I was a member of Congress, we tried to, to remind people what was happening. But there's so much more and this year, in particular, in light of what the community has been facing, the timing of Jewish American Heritage Month is really important. And it's something that we're really trying to take advantage of, frankly.   Manya Brachear Pashman: So now how do you celebrate it as you lead a non Jewish nonprofit? Is that very different, what you're experiencing this year?   Ted Deutch: Well, it is. And again, it means I get to spend a lot of my time thinking about all of the ways that we can draw people's attention to this month. It gives me a chance to think about the prominent Jewish Americans who contribute to our country and in so many ways, that helps strengthen it. And for us here at AJC, we've worked really hard, focusing specifically at the outset of this month, on elected officials, state, local, and federal, and business leaders just to come in and acknowledge Jewish American Heritage Month and look for their own ways to recognize the contributions that Jewish Americans have made to our country. And we have a resource to do that. It's AJC.org/JewishAmericanHeritageMonth, of all things, which helps elected officials know what this is and how they can be involved and tells business leaders how they can acknowledge this month and it's so important this year, especially when so much of the conversation has been about antisemitism, and about hatred. And about that really a debate that's being, a conversation is being driven by those who want to divide the country and to spread false stereotypes of conspiracy theories about Jews and the Jewish community. Here is the perfect opportunity for us to set the record straight.   Manya Brachear Pashman: So you raise an important point that the people who should be driving the conversation about Jewish American Heritage, or driving the conversation in our community should not be the antisemites, it should be the Jewish community itself. So is this month a rare opportunity, or a platform to move the needle when it comes to awareness of antisemitism? Or is that not what this month is necessarily about? I mean, why is it on the calendar?   Ted Deutch: It is not a month about antisemitism any more than Black History Month is a month about racism. These are important milestones for our two communities to celebrate the contributions of our communities to the American story, that's what Jewish American Heritage Month is. The best way to push back against the antisemites is to marginalize them, and to give more people the opportunity to actually get to know the Jewish community–who we are, the diversity within the Jewish community. The fact that the Jewish community is not just a religion, but a people, and a culture and, and a group that has contributed so much throughout our nation's history. That's what this is really about. And by the way, it's going to have the added benefit of reducing antisemitism, because antisemitism preys on false narrative conspiracy theories, and providing facts and helping to educate people about who we really are, is the great opportunity that we have in front of us.   Manya Brachear Pashman: So I'm curious, you talked about traveling the world and spending time with Jewish communities around the globe, celebrating many Shabbats abroad. Have you encountered comparable commemorations, and time set aside for Jewish heritage in those countries? Or any heritage for that matter? I mean, Arab Americans in France or Asian Pacific Islanders in Germany.   Ted Deutch: First, I would note that May is also AAPI Heritage Month here in the United States. And AJC is working with partners in the API community, in a number of our regions to do joint programming, because again, important contributions to American history from both of our communities. Around the world, I don't know of anything, specifically comparable. I know, in Europe, there's a Europe-wide day to acknowledge the contribution of the Jewish community. There's a Jewish culture festival in Krakow that has become fairly popular. I was in Mexico City, just recently, and I know that in Mexico and in Argentina, there are opportunities to celebrate the Jewish community. But I don't know anything quite like this. But I know that in Europe, a lot of the plans that were created to combat antisemitism also includes specific ways to foster Jewish life. And one of the ways to do that is to highlight the history of the Jewish community in each of those countries.   Manya Brachear Pashman: So why does America devote an entire month to all the many diverse heritages, ethnicities, that make up our country? Why is this an American concept?   Ted Deutch: Well Manya, I don't know what the thinking was in moving forward with these designations. But it is, in many ways, the most American idea. This is what America is, it's who we are. It's this great collection of all different groups and faiths and nationalities, all contributing to create this remarkable country that we're so privileged to live in, a country with challenges that we can only overcome by working together. Antisemitism, by the way, one of those challenges, that it doesn't just affect the Jewish community, it affects everyone. But having specific times to pause to think about the contributions from each of those communities. When you add them all up, suddenly, you've got a year's worth of contributions from the great diversity within our country to celebrate. And I think that's the way we need to think about it. This isn't about May. This is, as you point out, about this collection of months throughout the year where we can celebrate the contributions from individual groups, which overall, reflect and contribute to the great diversity and the great successes that we've had.   Manya Brachear Pashman: I want to switch gears, switch countries, and talk a little bit about Israel. Israel has been going through a pretty difficult few months between its internal political debate over judicial review and the ongoing threats of terrorism, just this week more rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip. What would be your message to American Jews who are concerned about what they're seeing here?   Ted Deutch: Well, I understand the concern. Obviously, this most recent barrage of rockets is a reminder that while we're focused, and there's so much attention here in our country, to the politics in Israel, to the protests to the workings of the Knesset and the government and, whether there's going to be some sort of judicial reform, or what it looks like, to protect civil liberties and minority rights and checks and balances…while all of those conversations are taking place, 100+ rockets reminds us that we have a whole lot to be vigilant about. And Israel's security is not something that we can ever take for granted. And that it's important to note that all of those protesters in Israel, whether they're protesting, on Saturday nights, on a regular basis against judicial reform, or they were part of the big protest of people who turned out in Jerusalem to support judicial reform, all of them understand the threats that the country faces externally. And I understand concerns, I just think it's important to remember that it's, standing together in support of the country, doesn't mean that we don't have specific opinions about things that happen within the country. It doesn't mean that everyone comes at their connection to Israel the same way. But it does remind us that, being united, as rockets fall, as Israel confronts these threats is really important, not only for Israel, but I think for diaspora Jewry, as well.   Manya Brachear Pashman: We are holding our first Global Forum under your leadership in Tel Aviv next month, on the occasion of Israel's 75th birthday. So what are you hoping participants take away from that event, especially in light of what we just discussed – the difficulties and the many, many tensions that have to be managed there?   Ted Deutch: Well, the one thing that I know people will take away is the importance of being there. The fact that at this moment when history is being made the opportunity to be in Israel not only to focus on judicial reform and the political challenges and the security threats, but to also be in this incredibly vibrant, and diverse, and beautiful country, and to be reminded of the important place that Israel plays in the world in technology and innovation, and in humanitarian circles, and in combating climate change, and all of the ways and we go on and on, that this tiny little country is doing such remarkable things. And then all of that is continuing, even as hundreds of 1000s of people are marching in the streets.  That's what people will take away from this. You want to be there when history is being written. You want to be part of the history that's being written now and showing up in Israel and coming together at AJC Global Forum is well, for me, clearly, it's the best way to do that.   Manya Brachear Pashman: In other words, people should be excited about the democracy swirling all around them while they're experiencing Israel.   Ted Deutch: I've had friends reach out to invite us to come to the protests, I've had other friends reach out to tell me that they're looking forward to talking about the challenges of the Supreme Court as it currently exists. I've told them AJC's views on the importance of where this is going and, and the importance of shared democracy between the United States and Israel. And the response, again, from everyone on whatever, wherever they are on the political spectrum in Israel is, okay, well, it's just important that you're coming. We may agree with you completely. We may disagree with you, but as American Jews, your voice matters, and this is the opportunity to share it.  And it's the opportunity to hear directly from Israeli leaders and from global leaders who will be joining us literally from around the world, because they share in our commitment to safeguard Israel's place in the world. And it's those diplomatic efforts that help us do our work around the world, but at this moment, will allow all of us to focus on all that's happening in Israel.   Manya Brachear Pashman: Ted, thank you so much for joining us for the party, for coming to JAHM with us. And I look forward to more celebrating in Tel Aviv. Thank you so much.   Ted Deutch: Manya, I look forward to it as well, to celebrate with you and everyone who's listening. It's going to be a remarkable trip. But remember, we still have all of JAHM ahead of us.   Manya Brachear Pashman: May has only just begun.   Ted Deutch: All right, happy, JAHM.    Manya Brachear Pashman: Thank you so much.

Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

Join our BIG campaign! Announcing the NEW APP from iTorah.com https://itorah.com/campaigns/special The parasha this week begins with the words יעקב בארץ מצרים Y ויחי-Yaakov lived in Mitzrayim . The sefer Moshcheni Acharecha asks why the Torah needed to tell us that here, that Yaakov was living in Mitzrayim. After all, it just said previously that Yaakov had come down to Mitzrayim . The Rabbi answered, perhaps the Torah is stressing to us that Yaakov had true life, which is a life of Torah and mitzvot, although he was forced to live in a place of tumah – Mitzrayim . This teaches us that a person should never say, “If only I was living in Yerushalayim or Bnei Brak, then I would be able to be fully religious, but where I am, the tests are too hard. If, for whatever reason, a person has to be in an environment that threatens to compromise his adherence to Torah and mitzvot, it is never an excuse to let his guard down. Just the opposite; he needs to fight even harder because if he really wants to succeed and tries his best, Hashem will help him in wondrous ways. A man who has to travel a long distance every day to his kollel in Israel takes a specific bus with the same driver every single day. He accepted upon himself to always sit in the first seat behind the driver in order to guard his eyes, without having to search the bus for an empty seat or possibly have someone in front of him dressed immodestly. One day, when he sat down, the driver raised his voice and said, “Please explain this to me already. How do you get that seat every single day? I've been driving this bus for years and you always sit in the seat right behind me. Do you think no one else ever sits there? Every time you get on the bus, the person who was sitting there either gets off or moves to another place.” The man couldn't believe what he was hearing. It never occurred to him that Hashem was performing a miracle for him every day to help him stay pure in a potentially compromising environment. A woman related, after putting in much effort, she finally became a registered nurse, after being out of work for 12 long years. A short while later, she found her dream job in a maternity ward and the pay and hours were perfect. She went for orientation on a Thursday and, at the end of the day, all the nurses were given their schedules for the week. Her heart sank when she saw her first day of work was scheduled for Shabbat. She called her husband and asked him what to do. He said she should go to the director and tell her she is not allowed to work on Shabbat. She sat down first with a Tehillim and poured out her heart to Hashem. Then she went to the director, but she was nowhere to be found. She decided to just wait outside her office and, while there, the assistant manager saw her and asked her what she needed. When she explained her situation, the assistant manager said she was very familiar with that, being that she has a Jewish friend. She added, she knew working on Fridays was also an issue, and then asked the woman what schedule she preferred. The woman said she would be happy to work on Sundays and holidays and do her fair share, she just couldn't work on Friday nights and Shabbats. Right then and there, the assistant manager changed her schedule. A few days later, the director approached her after finding out about the schedule change and she said, “Everyone must stick to their schedule, there are no exceptions.” The woman prayed to Hashem to help her once again and when the time came the following week to create the next schedule, again the director was no where to be found, so she asked the assistant manager for help, which she provided. When the third week came along, again the director wasn't there, but this time one of the employees told her the director just resigned and took a job in another hospital. This woman needed help regarding Shabbat in a tough environment. She asked Hashem for help, which He provided in an amazing way. If we have a strong will to follow Torah and mitzvot, we can accomplish it in any circumstance we find ourselves in. Hashem wants to help us. All we have to do is ask Him for help and try our hardest. Shabbat Shalom

Ahavat Yisrael
Hoshana Raba- Fix Your Lips

Ahavat Yisrael

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2022

This Saturday night is Hoshana Raba, which is connected to Achdut . Rav Yerucham Olshin, in his Sefer Yerach L'Moadim (page 533) explains a fascinating concept. In Parashat Ki Tetzeh (21/13) the Torah tells us about the Yefat Toar, וּבָ֥כְתָ֛ה אֶת־אָבִ֥יהָ וְאֶת־אִמָּ֖הּ She cries over her father and her mother. The Zohar tells us that this is symbolic of the Jewish people doing teshuva , crying in the month of Elul. The father refers to God and the mother refers to Knesset Yisrael, which literally means the gathering of the Jewish people . The Sefer Shelah HaKadosh explains that although the Jewish people down in this world look like they're separate, in the heavens above, in the secret of their souls, they're really united and they're one. So when there's a separation down here amongst Jews, it impacts a separation in the heavens above. As such, there are two aspects of teshuva. One is to fix the sins that impact on our relationship with God, and the other is to fix the sins that cause of the separation between the Jewish people. He says that the first 10 days are Aseret Yeme Teshuva, but there are another 10 days from after Yom Kippur to Hoshana Raba. The first 10 days are to work on our disconnect with God, and the second 10 are to work on the disconnect from man to man. This continues the theme of unity that we've been talking about until now, with the Lulav and Etrog , Aravot and Hadassim that symbolize unity, and also the Succah- as we mentioned, the whole Jewish people could fulfill their obligation with one Succah. He adds a beautiful thought: on Hoshana Raba, which is the final judgment day, we bang the Aravot because symbolize the lips. What do the Aravot have to do with lips? Mainly, we are talking about fixing the divisiveness among the Jewish people, which is all about Sinat Hinam , and the Chafetz Chaim says that the main cause of Sinat Hinam is Lashon Hara. Therefore, our job on Hoshana Raba is to fix our lips. That's the Aravot . And as we mentioned in the past, we are supposed to bang the “lips” on the ground. If someone says something that bothers you, what should you do? Put dirt in your mouth, put a cork in your mouth. Don't respond. That's the fixing of the lips. And he brings down a beautiful thought from the Gaon of Vilna. There are different areas where our speech is made- we pronounce things with our teeth, with our lips, with our palate, and our throats ( the tongue is in a separate category as it's the main part). The letters that come out of the teeth are Zayin, Samech, Shin and Resh. Then we have letters that come from the lips. Bet, Vav, Mem and Peh . Then we have the letters that come from the Palate-the Gimmel, Yud, Chaf, and Kuf . The Alef, Heh, Chet and Ayin come from the throat. (The tongue letters are Daled, Tet, Lamed, Nun and Taf ) He says that the word Succah has a letter from the four enabler units. It has a Samech from the teeth letters, It has a Vav from the lip letters. It has a Chaf from the palate letters and the Heh from the throat letters. The point is that we're trying to fix the different parts of the body that are involved in speech. Because, again, the main theme of Succot is to fix the divisiveness that's comes from speech. One last little tidbit is that on Shabbat Mincha we say Atah Echad V'Shimcha Echad, Umi K'Amcha, Goy Echad B'Aretz. You are One, Your Name is One, and who is like your people Israel, A unique nation on earth? Why do we say this on Shabbat? One explanation is that when the Jewish people are goy echad b'aretz/when we are united, then it brings about that Hashem Echad U'Shmo Echad. Since Shabbat Mincha is a time that symbolizes Mashiach's times, that is why we talk about that concept. (There are three Shabbats, that we've mentioned in the past- the Shabbat of creation, the Shabbat of Torah, and the Shabbat of Mashiach). The Shabbat of Mincha is the Shabbat of Mashiach, so we talk about the Jewish people being united. That will bring about the Oneness of God and the Oneness of His Name. So B'Ezrat Hashem, we will dedicate ourselves, this Shabbat and the following Sunday, to being cognizant and introspective of the concept of Lashon Hara and B'Ezrat Hashem that will give us a good final judgment. Have a wonderful day, Shabbat shalom and a pitka tava , which means a good note because the notes are given out on the judgment day of Hoshana Raba. All the best.

Welcome to Embrace Shabbat. The Sefer Yafei LaLev ( nefesh yetaira b'Shabbat, Letter 25) quotes from the Yalkut Reuveni that Shabbat was created before the six days. The passuk states: ששת ימים עשה , [G-d made] six days. Interestingly, it doesn't say say ב ששת ימים עשה , in six days [He] created , but that He created “six days.” Each day was its own individual creation, including Shabbat. Although Shabbat occurs last in the week, it was actually created before the entire world. As it says in Parshat Yitro, זכור את יום השבת לקדשו , remember Shabbat and make it holy. The passuk continues ששת ימים עשה . It mentions Shabbat before the six days because Shabbat was actually created first. Why? Shabbat is the source of all of the bracha and therefore nothing can be created before it. סוֹף מַעֲשֶׂה בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה תְּחִלָּה , the end action was thought of first. The end goal of Shabbat was created first בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה . We find a similar concept with the Jewish people. בראשית- בשביל ראשית . The Jewish people were also created before the entire creation בְּמַחֲשָׁבָה . It is for this reason that we have a special connection to Shabbat- we both preceded creation. The Sefer Yafei LaLev is bothered by a question from the Sefer Shemen Sasson in his commentary on the Arizal Shaar HaKavanot . The three days prior to Shabbat- Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday- get their Kedusha from the upcoming Shabbat. Similarly, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday get their kedusha from the previous Shabbat. So, what happened at the beginning of creation? How were the first three days of creation able to exist without the kedusha from the prior Shabbat. Where did they get their source of life from? This idea from the Sefer Yafei LaLev sheds light on the issue. Shabbat was in existence prior to creation and therefore the first three days got kedusha from Shabbat. Shabbat is not only the end goal, but the intention from the beginning. Everything throughout the week stems from Shabbat. אך את שבתותי תשמורו - the Jewish people must keep two Shabbats in order for the geula to come. Why? We need a Shabbat as the source of kedusha for Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, and a Shabbat that is the source of kedusha for the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday preceding it. The Jewish people must keep two Shabbats because the entire week gets its nourishment from the Shabbat before and the Shabbat afterward. We must appreciate that Shabbat doesn't come once a year, but once every seven days. This tremendous gift comes to our doorstep each week and we must take advantage of it! Shabbat is the source of our Emunah- it is not just a long afternoon of galvanizing with neighbors; it is a time to be mechazek ourselves with the idea that HaKadosh Baruch Hu is the Source of everything. Just like the farmers observe shemitah once every seven years, we have a shemitah once every seven days to give us that important message of Emunah. Emunah is the source of bracha. Because Shabbat is a day of Emunah, it is also a day that provides us with tremendous brachah. The middle of the week is merely a “sandwich” between the two Shabbat bookends. It matters what you put in your sandwich, but you need to have the “bread”- Shabbat. Have a wonderful day and a Shabbat Shalom.

Welcome to Embrace Shabbat. In the month of Elul, we begin preparing for Rosh Hashana. In the mussaf prayers, we quote 30 different pesukim , many of which reference Hashem's kingdom and grandeur. The fifth passuk reads: ה' מָלָךְ֮ גֵּא֪וּת לָ֫בֵ֥שׁ לָבֵ֣שׁ ה' עֹ֣ז הִתְאַזָּ֑ר אַף־תִּכּ֥וֹן תֵּ֝בֵ֗ל בַּל־תִּמּֽוֹט - Hashem is King, He clothes Himself in grandeur; Hashem wears strength, He girds Himself with strength. He makes sure that the world is established; he doesn't falter. In addition to the Rosh Hashanah prayers, this passuk is recited each Friday in the shir shel yom . After Adam HaRishon was created, he opened his eyes, saw the beautiful creations surrounding him, and called out this passuk . We too, recite this prayer on Friday, the day that he was created, as well as on Rosh Hashanah, referring to Hashem as our King. The Chidah also makes a beautiful connection between this passuk and Shabbat. He quotes the Arizal who points out that גֵּא֪וּת לָ֫בֵ֥ש ׁ, when unscrambled, spell גואל שבת - He will redeem us in the zechus of Shabbat. This idea is similarly expressed in the Midrash אין ישראל נגאלין עד שישמרו את השבת , the Jewish people will not be redeemed until they keep Shabbat. By keeping the Shabbat at a high level- שמירה מעולה - a person demonstrates that HaKadosh Baruch Hu created the world, that He is the King, and אין עוד מלבד , there is no one else but Him. By extension, if Hashem is in full control and the world is His, He can forgive any sin. The Ramchal writes that Hashem can forgive any sin, regardless of the “rules” and the more one believes that He is in charge, the more likely that his sins will be forgiven. Therefore, the Chidah says, by keeping Shabbat and testifying to this concept, a person will bring the Geula closer. Hashem's mercy will be invoked due to one's observance of Shabbat, hastening the redemption. עז התאזר has the numerical value of 613, because Hashem will consider it like we kept his 613 mitzvot , as Shabbat is equal to all of the mitzvot. In addition to this passuk , Adam HaRishon also said Mizmor Shir l'Yom HaShabbat when he realized the power of forgiveness that comes with Shabbat. We must recognize the power of keeping Shabbat- we are testifying to Hashem's Oneness and His power over everything, and that understanding allows and invokes Hashem's ability to forgive, bringing the Geula closer. This is especially important as we get ready for Rosh Hashana. The Rabbis teach that one should be especially careful in the Shabbatot of Elul because if we keep the last two Shabbats of the year, it will bring the Geula. This warning does not just apply to the communal Geula, but also to individual, personal Geulaot. We all need to be redeemed from our difficulties- קָרְבָ֣ה אֶל־נַפְשִׁ֣י גְאָלָ֑ה ּ, come close to my soul and let me be redeemed. B'ezrat Hashem, in the zechus of our high level of Shemirat Shabbat - שמירה מעולה - we should be zoche to the ultimate full Geula, and until then, everyone's own personal Geulot. Shabbat Shalom.

Parshat Emor contains detailed instructions for significant Jewish calendar dates, particularly the various festivals. Included in this run-through are details of “sefirat ha’omer” — the seven-week countdown that takes place eah year between the beginning of Pesach and Shavuot. Referred to by the Torah as “sheva shabatot temimot” (seven complete shabbats), this element of the Jewish festival cycle has become a central theme in the leadup to the celebration of Kabbalat Hatorah on Shavuot. Rabbi Dunner explores the curious expression “sheva shabatot temimot” — which seems to be a specific reference to seven Shabbats as opposed to seven weeks — through the wise eyes of the Nesivos Sholom. Once again, a seminal piece that looks at the fundamentals of the Jewish faith.

We have a double parsha this week! We have 54 parshiyot (or selections) in the Torah, but only about 50-51 weeks in a non-leap Hebrew year, as well as some other extenuating circumstances where we miss a Shabbat of Torah reading because it's a holiday. So in order to fit all these 54 parshiyot in the Hebrew year, we double up at least 2 Shabbats! This week is one of them! Our first parsha opens with the laws of keeping Shabbat and then we go right into hearing about the contributions that B'nei Yisrael (the Children of Israel) were instructed to make toward the Mishkan. In previous parshiyot we learned about the very precise pieces and ingredients for the Mishkan, but of course, even though G-d probably could have dropped the Mishkan from the sky, that's not what happened, the Mishkan still had to be built. So Moshe (Moses) relays that everyone who is of generous, willing, giving of heart (נְדִ֣יב לֵ֗ב) should give. Ovadia ben Yaakov Sforno, an Italian Torah commentator, explains that this means no one should give grudgingly or be forced to give. The Or HaChaim, Rabbi Chaim ibn Attar, North African Torah commentator, clarifies that there was an intangible “donation” that G-d gave, the תרומת השם, the G-dly Contribution, that held all the tangible pieces of the Mishkan together — like Divine superglue. So when the tangible pieces were donated, they must be given by people who were able to elevate their contribution to be worthy of meshing with the Divine Mortar (if you will). So we have people of generous, giving hearts who are the only ones allowed to donate and then we also have other characterized hearts, wise hearts. When referring to the skilled men and women who would build the Mishkan or create the various materials, the Torah uses the phrase “Wise of heart”- “חֲכַם־לֵ֖ב” Lovely idea, right? Generous hearts and wise hearts! But what does that really mean? And why does that have anything to do with ability in building? And there's a big difference between people who are “wise hearted” and wise in regard to specialized skills. Maybe in their years of slavery in Egypt, B'nei Yisrael picked up a few tips on building, but what are the chances they became the kinds of artisans required for building the Mishkan? There are a few interpretations. The Netziv, Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin, Eastern European rabbi, wrote that wise-hearted didn't just mean scholars, but that anyone (even people without specialized skills) who were G-d or Heaven-fearing, could participate. The Ramban (Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman, Nachmanides, a Spanish Torah commentator) interprets that the people who were wise of heart discovered they had the beginnings of naturally endowed skills, but were “raised up” or elevated through this service. This of course reminded me of the final scene in the Wizard of Oz where Dorothy runs to Glinda, the Good Witch of the North and asks for her help in getting back to Kansas. But of course Glinda says her famous line, “You've always had the power to go back to Kansas!” All she has to do is click her heels three times and she's home. To paraphrase — it was always inside you! You just had to be in a situation that brought the ability out!! If the animal for the Pesach sacrifice got lost and the original group divided into two and each group said to the other that if they found the animal or sacrificed another in its place, they should include the other in the slaughtering, if they both slaughtered and do not know who slaughtered first, no one can eat from the sacrifice and the whole animal is burned. And they are all exempt from Pesach Sheni. If they said nothing to each other, everyone fulfills their obligation with the animal they slaughtered and they can eat it. The gemara quotes a braita that concludes from this case that silence is preferable and quotes an verse from Proverbs to strengthen this claim. The mishna described a case in which the two Pesachs of two individuals got mixed up with each other. Each one will take one of the animals and bring someone else to join him and then will go with the other and stipulate, "If this one is my Pesach, then you will join with me and if this is not my Pesach, I will join with you." The Gemara discusses the connection between this mishna and the dispute between Rabbi Yossi and Rabbi Yehuda over whether one of the original members of the group must stay with the animal. The tenth chapter begins with a description of Passover eve - there is a prohibition to eat from close to the time of mincha. One needs to ensure that the poor people get four glasses of wine. Why did the mishna only talk about the prohibition of eat on the eve of Pesach and not mention all other erev Shabbats and Yom Tovs that also have a prohibition to eat from the time of the mincha. The gemara bring two answers - either the mishna is according to the opinion of Rabbi Yossi only, who holds that there is no prohibition to eat on erev Shabbats and holidays, only on Pesach because of the mitzva to eat matza or that there is a difference in the prohibitions - on the eve of Pesach is is a half hour before mincha and the others are from mincha. The gemara brings a braita that contradicts the second possibility, however Mar Zutra suggests that perhaps the braita is inaccurate.

You never know when something many Jews may associate with old-fashioned Jewish fare, like herring and crackers, will somehow turn high-end and hipster. One millennial, barely out of his teens, is putting herring out there for all the internet to see. And he’s got a heck of a story to tell. It all started in late 2014, when Queens, NY-teen Naftali Engel was in Israel for post-high school gap-year study. He spent some Shabbats away from his Judean Hills yeshivah with his brother who lives in Safed, the holy city famous for its spiritually creative enclaves. One Shabbat, Engel tasted a particularly delicious homemade herring, and, perhaps nonchalantly, asked the maker for his recipe. The answer he got was not quite traditional.

In looking at the 10 Commandments of YAHUAH we find they arevery much to be observed today by those who profess to believe inHIM and have a relationship with HIM through HIS SON...King YAHUSHA HA'MASCHIACH.In Exodus 20:8-11 we find the 4th of the 10 Commandments thatwere hand written by YAHUAH ELOHIYM of YASHARA'EL and were given to Moshe to teach the children of YASHARA'EL HIS Commandments, Statutes and Decrees.Deuteronomy 4:4-9/Deut 6:4-9, The Day of Shabbat is commanded to be honored as a perpetual covenant as a Sign between YAHUAH and the Children of YASHARA'EL...as written in...Exodus 31:13-17 Speak thou also unto the children of YASHARA'EL, saying, Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a Sign between ME and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I AM YAHUAH that doth sanctify you. (set you apart)Ye shall keep the Sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to YAHUAH: whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.Wherefore the children of YASHARA'EL shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between ME and the children of YASHARA'EL for ever: for in six days YAHUAH made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day HE rested, and was refreshed. We see in...Genesis 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.Genesis 2:2 And on the seventh day ELOHIYM ended HIS work which HE had made; and HE rested on the seventh day from all HIS work which HE had made.Genesis 2:3 And ELOHIYM blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it HEhad rested from all HIS work which ELOHIYM created and made. All food/work/chores should be preparedon the day prior to the Shabbat which is known as preperation day.)We see that the Day YAHUSHA our MessiYAH died for us, it was the preperation day, just before the Sabbath as written in Mark 15:42 And now when evening was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the Shabbath...Yoceph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the Kingdom of YAHUAH, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of YAHUSHA.And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Yoceph. And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre. And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.(Again YAHUSHA died on the Preperation Day just before the HIGH HOLY Shabbat Day. The Feast of Unleavened Bread.)Today Believers in YAHUSHA HA'MASCHIACH are grafted into YASHARA'ELand are thereby apart of the New Covenant through the Blood of YAHUSHAHA'MASCHIACH that was shed for the remission of our sins. Thereby making us Sons of ELOHIYM, born not of flesh and blood, natural descent or a husbands will but born of ELOHIYM. In Matthew 12 we see HIM as Master of Shabbat. (Read few verses of Matthew 12)YAHUSHA is also considered to be the LivingTORAH of YAHUAH ELOHIYM. HalleluYAH. John 1:14 And the WORD was made flesh and tabernacled among us (and we beheld HIS glory, the glory as of the yachiydof the FATHER,) full of grace and truth.YAHUSHA kept Shabbat...Luke 13:10 And HE was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. The women who followed YAHUSHA kept Sabbath also...Luke 23:56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day according to the Commandment.Acts 15:21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the Synagogues every Sabbath day.((Shabbat will also be observed in The Kingdom. )) See Hebrews 4Hebrews 4:4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And ELOHIYM did rest the seventh day from all HIS works.=====================================================Let's take a look at a few Old Covenant/Testament Scriptures...Here we observe they were warned to not defile YAHUAHS Sabbaths...and shouldthey comply blessings were instore however if they did not...curses would come upon themand we know that Yerushalayim/YASHARA'EL were sent into captivity for not heeding ABBAYAHUAHS Warnings.Nehemiah 13:19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Yerushalayim began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the Sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the Sabbath Day.Jeremiah 17:21-27 King James Version (KJV)Thus saith YAHUAH; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath Day, nor bring it in by the gates of Yerushalayim;Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath Day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the Sabbath Day, as I commanded your fathers. But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction. And it shall come to pass, if ye diligently hearken unto me, saith YAHUAH, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the Sabbath day, but hallow the Sabbath day, to do no work therein; Then shall there enter into the gates of this city kings and princes sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of YAHUDAH, and the inhabitants of YERUSHALAYIM: and this city shall remain for ever. And they shall come from the cities of YAHUDAH, and from the places about YERUSHALAYIM, and from the land of Benjamin, and from the plain, and from the mountains, and from the south, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meat offerings, and incense, and bringing sacrifices of praise, unto the house YAHUAH.But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the Sabbath Day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of YERUSHALAYIMon the Sabbath Day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of YERUSHALAYIM, and it shall not be quenched.Beloved's just like in YASHARA'EL'S time when Moshe and the other prophets read the Command of YAHUAH to them and they were to obey...it's the same way we are called to obey ABBA YAHS commandstoday and HIS command instructs us to "Remember HIS Shabbat Day to Keep it Holy/Set Apart and not to work in it as it is a sign between HIM and YASHARA'EL"It's my sincere prayer that if you attend a Sabbath keeping Assembly/Church however youfind yourself breaking Shabbats or any of the other commandments, you can repent today and ask the MOST HIGH YAH for forgivenessand get back to being TORAH observant and following YAHUSHA HA'MASCHIACH. For HE says in HIS WORD, "If My people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sins and heal their land."He also says in 1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins HE is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."HalleluYAH...HalleluYAH.And if you are attending Church on Sunday and calls Sunday the Shabbat of our Heavenly FATHER...know Sunday is the 1st Day of the Week and the Shabbat of YAHUAH our ELOHIYM is on the 7th Dayand there is no work involved whatsover...(no grocery shopping...no errands running...a Day of sweet repose and rest.Proverbs 28:9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the TORAH, even his prayers are an abomination.

Shabbat Violation The Torah helps to paint a picture of work and rest, slavery and freedom, which spiritually amounts to life and death. How so? In the Renewed Covenant book of Galatians, Rabbi Sha’ul tell us: "Don’t delude yourselves: no one makes a fool of God! A person reaps what he sows. Those who keep sowing in the field of their old nature, in order to meet its demands, will eventually reap ruin; but those who keep sowing in the field of the Spirit will reap from the Spirit everlasting life. So let us not grow weary of doing what is good; for if we don’t give up, we will in due time reap the harvest. Therefore, as the opportunity arises, let us do what is good to everyone, and especially to the family of those who are trustingly faithful." (6:7-10) The better first half of Leviticus chapter 25 uses harvest language, sowing and reaping, working and resting according to faith. To leave the ground unplowed for an entire year requires faith indeed—especially living in an agricultural land such as Isra'el! The guilty man was found gathering wood on the “day meant for resting”. Today, our faith lies in the fact that we have rested from our labors of self-righteousness. Before our faith in Messiah, we worked year after year to meet our own needs. Our harvest was the product of our own hands. Consequently, it was a harvest of death. Our “working” to be accepted by God, outside of genuine, Biblical trust in Messiah, could only result in death. But to place one’s trusting faithfulness in the atoning work of the Messiah Yeshua is to rest from one’s own labors! To be sure, without the faith of Messiah at work in our lives, we truly do not have a proper concept of Shabbat! To rest (the Sabbath) is to cease working in our own fields, and to begin "resting" in the fields of the Master! When we were in the world, we were "slaves" to sin! But now in Messiah Yeshua, we have experienced our spiritual Jubilee—our year of release from debt! We are no longer slaves to sin, and our wages are no longer death! We have been set free by the power of his Sabbath rest! What does the Torah say? "What the Messiah has freed us for is freedom! Therefore, stand firm, and don’t let yourselves be tied up again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1) And again in another place, "So there remains a Shabbat-keeping for God’s people. For the one who has entered God’s rest has also rested from his own works, as God did from his. Therefore, let us do our best to enter that rest; so that no one will fall short because of the same kind of disobedience." (Hebrews 4:9-11) And finally, "Keep my Shabbats, and revere my sanctuary; I am ADONAI." (Leviticus 26:20)

Working and Resting All of this can seem fairly insignificant to us living with the Western mentality. But this was extremely important to those living in the Land, during the time of the TaNaKH when the Torah acted as the living Constitution as well as a daily guide for godly living. Here couched within this tiny parashah we see an awesome display of the mercy and compassion that HaShem has for all of his created subjects, whether they be Jew or non-Jew, slave or free! The Torah paints a picture of work and rest, slavery and freedom, which spiritually amounts to life and death. How so? In the Renewed Covenant book of Galatians, Rabbi Sha’ul tell us: “Don’t delude yourselves: no one makes a fool of God! Therefore, as the opportunity arises, let us do what is good to everyone, and especially to the family of those who are trustingly faithful.” (6:7-10) The better first half of Leviticus chapter 25 uses harvest language, sowing and reaping, working and resting according to faith. To leave the ground unplowed for an entire year requires faith indeed—especially living in an agricultural land such as Isra'el! Today, our faith lies in the fact that we have rested from our labors of self-righteousness. Before our faith in Messiah, we worked year after year to meet our own needs. Our harvest was the product of our own hands. Consequently, it was a harvest of death. But to place one’s trusting faithfulness in the atoning work of the Messiah Yeshua is to rest from one’s own labors! To be sure, without the faith of Messiah at work in our lives, we truly do not have a proper concept of Shabbat! To rest (the Sabbath) is to cease working in our own fields, and to begin “resting” in the fields of the Master! When we were in the world, we were “slaves” to sin! But now in Messiah Yeshua, we have experienced our spiritual Yovel! We are no longer slaves to sin! We have been set free by the power of his Sabbath rest! What does the Torah say? “What the Messiah has freed us for is freedom! Therefore, stand firm, and don’t let yourselves be tied up again to a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1) And again in another place, “So there remains a Shabbat-keeping for God’s people. Therefore, let us do our best to enter that rest; so that no one will fall short because of the same kind of disobedience.” (Hebrews 4:9-11) And finally, "Keep my Shabbats, and revere my sanctuary; I am ADONAI." (Leviticus 26:2)
