She adopted the name Cat Power for her first band in 1992, and has since used the name as a moniker for all of her musical endeavors. Raised in the South primarily by her grandmother, Marshall showed interest in music at an early age, and was influenced by blues and rock'n'roll. In the early nineties, Marshall relocated to New York City, and became acquainted with Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth after opening at a show for Liz Phair. Shelley subsequently drummed on her first two albums, Dear Sir (1995) and Myra Lee (1996), both somber indie rock records featuring sparse instrumentation. After releasing several blues and folk rock-influenced albums throughout the late 1990s, Marshall released The Covers Record in 2000, which included a cover of "Sea of Love" that was featured prominently in the film Juno (2007). She released three more albums, You Are Free (2003), featuring collaborations with Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder; The Greatest (2006); and Jukebox (2008). Marshall has had several endeavors in modeling, and has been cited as a muse of Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld. She made her acting debut in the film My Blueberry Nights (2007) in a minor supporting role alongside Jude Law. Her most recent record, Sun (2012) was released to critical acclaim, and entered the Billboard 200 at number 10, making it her first top-ten album in the United States. LINQUA FRANQA BIO: Linqua Franqa is a cultural worker and emcee from Athens, Georgia. Their sophomore album, Bellringer, is also their PhD dissertation in Language and Literacy Education at the University of Georgia.

Chan Marshall, better known by her stage name Cat Power, is an American singer, songwriter and producer. After three decades in the music industry, she has eight original albums under her belt but has also made three cover albums. The most recent saw her singing everything from the work of The Pogues to Lana Del Rey. This Saturday she will be recreating Bob Dylan's iconic 1966 Royal Albert Hall concert. It was one of the most controversial tours in the history of rock & roll, where Dylan enraged fans for electrifying his songs. Power will be performing them in the same order as Dylan himself: the first half of the show will be acoustic before an electric band join her for the second half. Chan joins Emma to talk music, motherhood and honouring a rock and roll icon. With just five days to go until the US midterms, Emma takes a look at what matters to women voters. On Monday we heard from a former Republican strategist, today Emma will be joined by Democratic Party political strategist and former head of EMILY's List, Stephanie Schriock. A new project, led by Lancaster University, has created memory boxes, designed to help women whose babies are taken into care at birth while a court determines their child's future. We hear why these ‘Hope boxes' are so important to the women who developed the idea and Research Fellow, Claire Mason who supported them. And discuss why the number of newborns in care proceedings in England and Wales has increased over the past decade. We revisit the events of the Egyptian protests in 2012-2013 in Tahrir Square in Cairo, with the author Yasmin El-Rifae. Her book, ‘Radius, A Story of Feminist Revolution', tells the story of the women and men who formed Opantish – Operation Anti-Sexual Harassment and Assault to intervene in the spiralling cases of sexual violence against women in the square. The group members often risked assault themselves and Yasmin was also one of their organisers.
“You Are Free” é o sexto disco de Cat Power, projeto da artista norte-americana Chan Marshall. Chan Marshall, better known by her stage name Cat Power, has been living in South Florida for 20 years - a place she says calms her music and her soul. She spoke to Sundial Now before her tour with Jack White stopped in Miami this week.
Don't go into Chan Marshall's latest album, Covers, expecting a karaoke party — Chan transforms, inhabits and recreates them, makes them entirely new and entirely hers.
Performing as Cat Power, Chan Marshall's new album, “Covers,” takes an almost audacious approach to covering an almost audaciously eclectic group of songs—something that have come to expect from her by now but still retains an element of surprise. The songs she's chosen come from a list of musicians that ranges from Billie Holiday to Frank Ocean to Bob Seger to Iggy Pop. While not a Brooklynite, she played some early shows here in Williamsburg … and will be playing one of her next shows at Brooklyn Steel, on April 18. We discuss her relationship to the city, we talk about her relationship to covers, to discovering new music and to motherhood (her son actually makes a cameo in this episode). At one point, Chan Marshall was in a band called Cat Power. But it's appropriate for someone like Chan, who had to be self-reliant almost from birth, that she'd adopt the name as her own once the band dissolved. Chan and Marc talk about her rebirth as Cat Power, the Atlanta music scene in the early ‘90s, carrying trauma throughout her life, and finding out that making music grounded her in something real for the first time. They also focus on her eclectic collections of cover songs as she prepares to release another album of them. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Recently the hosts of Switched on Pop kept seeing the same byline next to their favorite pieces of music writing. A moving profile of Bad Bunny? There was the name. A searing critique of West Side Story? There it was again. An elegy on love, loss, and an Aretha Franklin and Smokey Robinson duet? By now it was committed to memory: writer and translator Carina Del Valle Schorske. So we knew we had to invite Carina to participate in our Modern Classics series and learn what this brilliant writer would place in her modern pop pantheon. Carina's pick, the 2012 song “Manhattan” by Cat Power, presents an opportunity to analyze an artist we've never discussed on the show before, and a song that sparks associations with New York City's rich musical history. Cat Power, aka Chan Marshall, released “Manhattan” on her 2012 album Sun, and the song—on which Marshall recorded every instrument herself—has become an unlikely sleeper hit in the Cat Power catalog. Perhaps that's because, as Carina tells it, the song is a celebration and elegy at once, trying to capture the beat of a city that is constantly in flux, but with an inescapable iconicity. “Manhattan” isn't the only piece of urban musical alchemy Carina brought to the show. Cat Power's ode to the borough syncs up in surprising ways with the 1978 salsa track by Willie Colón and Rúben Blades, “Buscando Guayaba.” Together, the songs stake out a twisting path across genre, time, and language, but along on the same streets. Songs Discussed Cat Power - Manhattan Rubén Blades and Willie Colón - Buscando Guayaba, Pedro Navaja Ella Fitzgerald - Manhattan Stevie Wonder - Livin' for the City Alicia Keys and Jay Z - Empire State of Mind Check out Carina's profile of Bad Bunny, her essay on Aretha Franklin and Smokey Robinson, and more writing at her website. Now as FACS releases Present Tense (Trouble in Mind) their 4th record in 4 years, she talks about her life and how she's created this amazing career a reality, from her early Chicago band We Regazzi, her roaring '20s, the stability of her relationship with her partner, exploring the reasoning behind her never-questioned decision to become a full-time troubadour, it's a revealing rap with a prodigious musician.
In this beautiful, precedent-setting episode of Solitary Confinement in the Digital Age, I invite you into my house, and let what happens happen. The evening's impetus comes from me discovering a Hunter S Thompson book in a thrift store, getting some beer, writing a song/poem with inflamatory words that should merely, by now, be cool. It goes through the great Leonard Cohen and the great Cat Power. The great Cat Power is the great Chan Marshall, who might be an alcoholic, like me. I know about the great Chan Marshall because of the great, the greatest, Patti Schmidt. I don't know how to spell her name and I am not going to check. But Patti Schmitt(?) was once the host of the show that made Canadian indie music the best indie music in the world: the show was broadcast on CBC radio 2 during the 90s. It was called Brave New Waves. Hey ... It's Brave New Waves An unsung genius of Canadian broadcasting. How many great Canadian bands will read this and not realize the slight they have done Patti Smitt (lol) by not demanding that she receive, at the very least I'm not checking how to spell her name. I love her. I met her once at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto and this was after listening to her show all five days a week after lockdown. The best fuckin' show. Anyhoo, when I met her at the Horseshoe Tavern, I didn't quite believe it was her. It just seemed too good to be true. She insisted she was she. To make her prove it - GET THIS! - I made her say the show's intro into my ear. "Hey ... It's Brave New Waves" If you have never heard the show Brave New Waves I won't bother explaining the matchless brilliance of this. I didn't mention the above story in the podcast, by the way. If you've read this far consider yourself backstoried.

On this week's episode of Celebration Rock I invited Pitchfork senior editor (and now friend of the podcast) Stacey Anderson to discuss this month's most notable indie-rock albums. Our discussion began with Pinegrove, who's latest album Skylight is an affecting alt-country-leaning album that's a worthy follow-up to the band's 2016 breakout Cardinal. But much of the discussion of this band — or conspicuous lack of discussion — stems from the charges of sexual coercion levied against frontman Evan Stephens Hall that prompted Hall to voluntarily push back the album's release and reschedule tour dates. Stacey and I explored whether it's possible to set that baggage aside when listening to the music — or whether it's even right to do that. In the second half of the episode, we talked about two of the most reliable legacy artists in indie rock. Chan Marshall, who has put out records since the mid-'90s as Cat Power, returned in early October with her first album in six years, Wanderer, which ranks among her very best. As for Kurt Vile, he's been putting out consistently strong albums on a regular basis for a decade now. While his latest Bottle It In doesn't radically reinvent his formula of languid and meditative guitar jams, it suggests that his craftsmanship and lyrical insight are only growing richer with time. Finally, Stacey and I share some recent recommendations: Robyn's pop confessional Honey for her, and Colter Wall's country throwback Songs of the Plains for me.

With Robin Hilton out for one more week, NPR Music's Ann Powers and Lars Gotrich join Stephen Thompson for a whirlwind tour of a busy release day. We've got the first album in five years by the spiky pop-rock band Swearin' (featuring the great and good Allison Crutchfield); the gorgeous first album in six years by Chan Marshall, a.k.a. Cat Power; the heavy, almost absurdly ambitious rock and roll of F***** Up; the versatile country of Eric Church; the springy and inspirational anthems of multi-hyphenate powerhouse Tunde Olaniran; the sprawling, deeply searching rock of mewithoutYou; the rugged metal of Matt Pike's long-running band High on Fire; and Phosporescent's Matthew Houck, whose beatific folk-rock sprawls with winsome approachability.
Chan Marshall is a singer-songwriter who’s been making records under the name Cat Power since 1995. In 2018, she put out her tenth album, Wanderer.
