“Our old manager was always saying to me, ‘Artwork's not really that important. No one cares.' That's why he's our old manager.” That bit from this week's 200th episode, with Travis' Fran Healy, speaks to his genuine reverence for how music is presented. And though he's the voice and songwriter behind such anthemic rave-ups as "All I Wanna Do Is Rock" and "Selfish Jean," it's arguably the somber side of the foursome (with hits like "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" and "Driftwood") that put them on the map globally, and eventually led to them going 14x Platinum in the UK. The band's new album L.A. Times drops this Friday, July 12th and on today's program, Fran discusses his obsession with the city's countless movie landmarks, how Coldplay's Chris Martin lent a small hand in sequencing the songs, and the Scottish quartet's embracing of the Internet age from the ground floor. Also, why Fran's been singing Womack & Womack around the house, and karaoke versions of his own material in Mexico. Tour dates, social media and more are available at travisonline.com.

For a bonus episode of his podcast, Chris welcomes Travis frontman Fran Healy. Emerging from Glasgow in the mid 90s, and now in their fourth decade together, Travis were inspirational to a number of like-minded British guitar bands like Coldplay, Snow Patrol and Keane. Travis 2nd album, 1999's 'The Man Who', was a became a huge hit globally, fuelled by the unstoppable single 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?'. And when the heavens opened as the band launched into that track at Glastonbury in 1999 the band found themselves plastered across newspapers and news reports, which then pushed the album to the top of the charts. But the band have also had their setbacks, not least when drummer Neil Primrose broke his neck in a freak accident... and yet, he was back behind his drum kit within 5 months.  It's a great story, and a great listen.

The Art of Longevity

Fran Healy and his band Travis have this longevity thing down. Firstly, you must have a love and addiction to music, as something magical. Secondly, that magic is for you to create - making music to nobody's expectations but your own. But thirdly, you get lucky. As Fran says in episode 3, Season 9:“The chances of a shit kicker from Glasgow going on to win the best band in the world is a billion to one. How can you be proud to be lucky?”Well okay, but as all bands that ever got a break know, you have to be in it to win it. And for 35 years now, Fran has been in it - always mining for that song gold. “Most songwriting is digging, until you find that nugget, and you extract it from the rock. You keep digging because you know you will find something”. New song Gaslight is one such nugget - a fabulous pop-rock stomp, with a brass arrangement and burst of dirty guitar to boot. It feels confident. And, Travis has a new album - L.A. Times - written by Fran Healy from his studio on the edge of Skid Row, Los Angeles, where he has lived for 10 years. He describes L.A. Times as Travis' “most personal album since The Man Who”. That album went 9X Platinum in the UK alone and shot the band into superstardom, and while no such expectations exist for L.A. Times, that's just as it should be. The band that rose to fame during the peak CD era in the 90s is releasing their 10th album into a world where vinyl sells more than CDs, but streaming still rules. Does Travis have a place in this space? It's just not something that will concern Healy or his bandmates that much. “The problem is when you think you are the shit, you are the diamond. But I'm still a lowly miner, and always will be. Joy and success you can define any way you want, but it's about you, the person, not outside things”. The writer of a song called Gaslight will never be gaslighted it seems. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

On this week's show we welcome local Beaconsfield resident turned activist, Fran Healy, who came on to talk about her work campaigning for the protection of two gems in her community: the old railway house and the accompanying Bunya Bunya tree. The railway house was lovingly restored over 20 years by its previous owners and the Bunya Bunya tree is an ancient species, planted on this spot 144 years ago. Fran and friends have been active the past year since the announcement by Andrews Labor to disturb the site for level crossing work. In this conversation we begin by getting to know Fran and then she guides us through the campaign. Special mention to fellow campaigners David, Joan and Christie, as well as Graham and Anne Taylor from the Beaconsfield Progress Association. The campaign invites you to join them for a picnic on Sunday April 2nd, 12pm, to hug the bunya bunya and see its majesty for yourself. Let's hope the campaign is successful. We thank Fran for joining us and congratulate the group on all their hard work.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got the Scottish singer and songwriter behind some of the catchiest songs of the past two decades along with the super producer who helped bring those songs into the world: Fran Healy and Nigel Godrich. Healy is the singer, guitarist, and chief songwriter of the band Travis, which really broke big with 1999's The Man Who, scoring mainstream hits with songs like “Why Does it Always Rain on Me” and “Turn.” They've since created a deep catalog that numbers nine albums. But for today's purposes we're going to concentrate on 2001's The Invisible Band, which Travis is giving a belated 20th birthday celebration for at the moment, including a US tour that starts this week. It can be difficult to follow up a massive success like The Man Who, and Travis turned once again to Godrich to help them chart the proper course. It wasn't the beginning, but rather the continuation of a long and fruitful relationship. Check out “Sing” from The Invisible Band. Godrich, by the time Invisible Band came around, had found massive success as the producer of Radiohead's OK Computer, and of course he would go on to be the sort of unofficial sixth member of that band—recording all of their albums and even playing music with Thom Yorke in Atoms for Peace. As you'll hear in this conversation, Godrich had some solid advice for Healy heading into The Invisible Band, though it's not necessarily advice he would give anymore. Beyond his work with Radiohead and Travis, Godrich has also produced classics by Beck—including Mutations and Sea Change—and Air and Arcade Fire and Roger Waters. The list goes on. In this conversation, the two old friends talk about their state of mind and state of life back when they commenced recording The Invisible Band in Los Angeles. They talk about Godrich's recent revelatory experience seeing the Pavement reunion tour—he also produced that band's swan song, Terror Twilight. There's even a story about a baby goat peeing in a very expensive guitar case. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Fran Healy and Nigel Godrich for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting and social media platforms. Each month on "Bridging the Political Gap" we try to provide up to 12 hours of history for our listeners. This month with season 5 ending a little sooner we ended up with an additional 3 hours and 44 minutes. So we put together a few bonus shows that we thought our listeners would enjoy. Our first bonus show is this one on Richard Nixon the Sports fan. He loved baseball and football and was actually fairly insightful in both sports. There are countless pictures of Richard Nixon over his long and storied years in the public eye at sporting events.  He also made a number of appearances on radio and television shows for the Major League Baseball Teams he loved to watch. We have a few for you here. In his retirement, he did an interview with the California Angels and then later the New York Mets for their radio broadcasts and while in the White House he talked with a reporter on the White House taping system about his all time all star baseball team. He also talked fondly of the man he considered the most courageous of all athletes, the late Lou Gehrig. We also will hear President Nixon talk football with the great Head Coach of the Washington Redskins (now Commanders) , George Allen. He once famously sent in a play to the Coach who actually called the play in a game. I understand the Skins lost yardage,  but oh well at least he gave it a good try!!We also will get to hear a few words of inspiration from a speech Richard Nixon gave to the University of Nebraska after he went to the school to help celebrate their winning the National Championship in College Football in 1970.

"Angus & Julia Stone" are a brother and sister indie folk duo originally from Sydney, Australia. These siblings grew up with music in their veins, given the fact that their father, John Stone, was a fledgling musician throughout their childhood. In fact some of Julia's earliest musical memories were that of hearing the bass vibrations coming from their household basement as she was falling asleep, and as her father would be rehearsing with one of his bands. However it was her brother Angus who would first pick up the guitar and start writing his own songs, eventually revealing his creations to Julia and teaching her how to play the guitar. In their formative years Angus and Julia would each write their own songs and perform them around various open mic nights in Sydney. Despite performing separately, they would each show up to the others shows, and support by providing backing vocals.Eventually Angus and Julia realized it might be cool to join forces and write and record together. This led to their debut release, the EP "Chocolate and Cigarettes", which attracted the attention of a publishing deal and eventually a record deal.To hear the full story as well as Jay and Jesse's musician selections, tune in to this latest installment of Roots to Grooves."Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

When Scottish band Travis landed their bonafide hit with "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?"—we were all taken with frontman Fran Healy's cheeky grin, affable persona and the way he seeminly wore his heart on his sleeve. After years of Brit-pop feuds and Oasis infighting, it was refreshing to have a band that wasn't grabbing the headlines with tiresome rock n'roll antics. Travis were nice. After their 1997 debut Good Feeling—a rock record that fitted the zeitgeist but failed to make an impression, they took a year off to write and find their own sound. They returned with "Writing To Reach You" — a quiet single off their sophomore record, The Man Who. It riffs off the chords from Oasis's "Wonderwall" and begs the question "what's a wonderwall anyway?" Their second single, "Driftwood" capitalized further on this introspective, honest sound, bouyed by Fran's mellifluous vocals. When the heavens opened for their Glastonbury 1999 set during "Why Does It Always rain On Me?" the band's future would be forever changed. They would return to Glastonbury the following year triumphant, as festival headliners, alongside David Bowie and The Chemical Brothers. The Man Who would go on to chart around the world. I'm not sure if I ever thought about who the person writing these songs were? What kind of life did they have? What had happened to make them write a song about someone who never seems to have good things happen to them? All I saw was Fran's smile, lovely topline melodies and an optimism in his lyrics that was easy to relate to. In part, this was their plan all along. As a band they wanted the songs to be the stars. After the success of The Man Who, their follow-up was deliberately titled The Invisible Band. It's an art to be everywhere without most people knowing more beyond the songs, the accolades and perhaps what haircut Fran was spotting next? "Mirrors are problematic for me," he said with his face scrunched up, on our zoom call. "There's something in this," he circled his finger around his still boyish face, ashen hair tucked under a basecall cap, "—that makes me not happy." Back in the day, 'this' was the the face that launched a thousand haircuts with the fauxhawk. That dread, however, is deeply rooted and has over the last 25 years helped Fran write some of the best pop songs for Travis. Their latest album, 10 Songs, has now debuted at No 5 on the British charts, proving they haven't lost their touch. Many thanks for making this possible—Fran Healy for your honesty, being so 'nice' and recording additional audio for the podcast. Also for granting us permission to use the trailer from Almost Fashionable. Sony ATV and Concord Publishing for permission to use songs. To Chloe Walsh and Katie Nelson at Grandstand for all the support.Songs Featured: "A Ghost," 'Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" "Driftwood," "Closer," "A Million Hearts," "Nina's Song," "Only Thing," "Butterflies" and "Waving At The Window." Photo by Ryan Johnson. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
