This week, we sat down with Connecticut-based folks musician Matt Nilsen. As the story goes with many folks in our orbit, Matt started out as a guitarist in various rock and punk bands before picking up an acoustic and writing his own songs. His songs have a dreamy vibe to them and will really resonate with folks who like Elliot Smith, early Songs: Ohia and similar artists. We enjoyed getting to catch up with Matt and learning quite a bit about him before we share a bill with him in New Haven later this month. We hope you dig it! Releasing nearly 20 albums over 15 years, singer/songwriter Jason Molina penned "bruised and barren songs of longing and lost salvation" (NPR). Delivered with a soul-cutting, unadorned tenor, his discography continues to connect with a devoted fan base through varied incarnations -- whether in a group dynamic as Magnolia Electric Co. under his first solo moniker, Songs: Ohia or his own birthname -- despite his death in 2013, at the age of 39.   A particularly prolific period in the mid-00's saw the release of the 4-CD Magnolia box set Sojourner, encompassing full-band recordings with Steve Albini in Chicago, an alternate line-up in Virginia with Cracker frontman David Lowery producing, an EP's worth of tracks from Memphis' legendary Sun Studio, and Molina solo tapes from home. If the wide-range of performances weren't enough, Molina wanted to double-down on his mythological side by adding a ouija board and real chicken bones to the screen-printed wooden box. Eventually, label and artist settled on a celestial map and Magnolia medallion. They also put out a truncated version of this massive collection as the 10-track single LP, Fading Trails in 2006.   Today, former Magnolia bandmate Jason Evans Groth and Secretly Canadian label co-founder Ben Swanson discuss their memories of the sessions that make up Sojourner, the journey this project has taken to get to vinyl (released earlier this month, available via secretlystore.com), and how artists today continue to spread the gospel of Molina's canon a decade after his passing. Follow @jasonamolina on Instagram for archival content, and join the Molina fan community via staticanddistance.substack.com.   Secretly Canadian is also auctioning off vinyl test pressings of Molina's work and more via eBay, linked here. All proceeds are donated to housing non-profit New Hope for Families.

Coachella is upon us, so Steve and Ian felt it was appropriate to talk about the music festival. But do you really need to talk about Coachella on an indie music podcast these days? This year's lineup might be the least indie-oriented in history, continuing a long-running trend favoring pop and electronic music. To illustrate this point, they revisited the 2013 lineup, a year when The Stone Roses, Blur, Phoenix and lots of other bands who might not even be booked at the festival in 2023 were the heavy hitters (3:13).Then they turned to Running With Our Eyes Closed, the recent HBO documentary about Jason Isbell and the making of his 2020 album, Reunions (15:14). Unlike most recent music docs, this film does not feel like a commercial for the subject. It is, instead, a very candid look at a marriage going through a rough patch. In fact, the film might be almost too honest in places; this is the rare music doc that doesn't flatter its subjects. Directed by Sam Jones, who also made 2002's similarly frank Wilco doc I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, Running With Our Eyes Closed ranks with the best rock films to come out in recent years. In the mailbag section, they addressed questions about The Walkmen — who recently reunited for a tour — and their overall legacy, as well as the career of Songs: Ohia singer-songwriter Jason Molina, who has emerged as an important influence on contemporary Americana and post-hardcore acts (33:11).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday.

Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. frontman Jason Molina was living in London when writer Justin Taylor caught up with him for an interview in 2010. This previously unreleased audio finds Molina in good spirits, discussing life in London, and provides a rare glimpse of his gregarious, often talebearing personality––one perhaps at odds with his darker musical persona.

Many thanks to James for his time, talent and vulnerability this week. You can check out James' music on his Bandcamp  page or by watching the video that he and his landlord (!) made for All of Arkansas the lead single on his most recent album Stars Blue Wheel. You can also follow him on the socials.  As you may have gathered from Katie's review this week, Songs: Ohia is a band in pretty heavy rotation here at TVK HQ. Accordingly, when James proposed a story based on Farewell Transmission I was pretty excited. If you were listening closely, I used brief clips of two versions of the song in this week's episode. The album version and the demo which is all the more lovely for having been, seemingly recorded outside with the birds and cicadas playing their part. As always, I'd encourage you to listen to the whole song either before or after you listen to the show and if you, like me, end up falling hard for Jason Molina's work you might want to listen to Didn't it Rain , The Lioness (which has, for my money, one of the sexiest choruses ever recorded) or maybe this acoustic version of Hold On Magnolia  which has stopped my heart more than once during the production of this week's show. Such a great talent, taken too soon.As always, you can get in touch with The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.Do you have a story about the song that saved your life? Send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.

The unravelling of America. The show tonight inspired by what is essentially a pretty sad article from rolling stone.com Songs about melting down. Heavy stuff from Bohannons and Drive by Truckers, Eliza Gilkyson. Includes fresh observations from Sammy Brue, prophetic Neil Young from On The Beach, dark, dark, SOngs:Ohia and the genius of Purple Mountains, all lightened up with a shot of Linda Rondstat. (Check how the second verse in Poor Poor Pitiful Me could be a #metoo song). That marathon new Bob Dylan track Murder Most Foul and then some thoughts and prayers towards the end with Cowboy Junkies and Los Lobos. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/political-commentary/covid-19-end-of-american-era-wade-davis-1038206/

The Director's Club wanted to do something special on what would have been legendary director Ingmar Bergman's 101st year, so we're putting together a three-part series we're calling Bergman 101, where we look at every full feature he made that had a theatrical release!  In Part I, we see how he made his start with melodramas but soon branched out to an astounding variety of films (like a film noir and a screwball comedy!), until he took his career to new artistic and public recognition with "Smiles of a Summer Night".  We look at the remarkable elements in these early works (including silent film segments, dream sequences, innovative montages, animation, and a stuffed cat), plus the themes and techniques that would coalesce in forming the amazing films to come! [7:31] "Crisis" ("Big City Nights", The Scorpions) [21:21] "It Rains on Our Love" ("Our House", Madness) [38:06] "A Ship to India" (Papa was a Rolling Stone", The Temptations) [49:23] "Music in Darkness" ("Blind", Talking Heads) [55:55] "Port of Call" ("A Mistake", Fiona Apple) [1:05:22] "Prison" ("Flagpole Sitta", Harvey Danger) [1:17:42] "Thirst" ("Bring Me Some Water", Melissa Etheridge) [1:23:47] "To Joy" ("Ode to Joy", Ludwig van Beethoven) [1:36:30] "This Can't Happen Here" ("Spies Like Us", Paul McCartney) [1:54:45] "Summer Interlude" ("Suddenly Last Summer", The Motels) [2:07:41] "The Waiting Women", (The Waiting", Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) [2:19:45] "Summer with Monika" ("Girl", Beck) [2:40:28] "Sawdust and Tinsel" ("Death of a Clown", The Kinks) [2:56:33] "A Lesson in Love" ("Money, Money, Money", ABBA) [3:07:01] "Dreams" ("Didn't It Rain", Songs: Ohia) [3:14:00] "Smiles of a Summer Night" ("Magic Potion", Lou Johnson)

Glad to have you along for the ride. This month, we bring you the uncut edition of Justin Gage’s conversation with comedian, musician, actor, songwriter, and all-around creator Tim Heidecker. Heidecker put together a playlist of the classic rock that inspired his latest, What The Broken Hearted Do, and walked us through it, noting what turns him on about tracks by Joni Mitchell, Warren Zevon, Judee Sill, Songs: Ohia, and more. Then, Marty Sartini Garner reviews the recent John Coltrane boxset, Coltrane ’58: The Prestige Recordings. Compiling every song Coltrane cut as a bandleader in that pivotal year, and captures him at a crucial stage in his journey, his first true attempt to will his sax into new territory. And to close out, Justin sits down with poet and songwriter Jonathan Rice live at Gold Diggers, to discuss both his haikus—optimized for the social media age—and new album, The Long Game.

It's a bit like our christmas/end of year episodes, but rather than being our favourite songs of the last year, this time we're going back in time for two full decades to the year 1999! To explain how the voting works, we each picked our 10 favourite songs of the year, then for each list we each ranked them 1-10 giving 10 points to our favourite and 1 to the one we liked least on each list. we also had a bonus point we could assign to one song on either of the other people's lists (So Colin could only assign the bonus point to a song on either Tracey or Ian's list). Colin's wife then added all the points up and we didn't find out the order until we were recording, so all the reactions you'll hear are genuine. Now admittedly, we are a little bit brutal to some of the songs on the list, but please remember that to be in the episode they have to have been in one of our top tens of the year! Bands featured in this episode include American Football, Tori Amos, Aphex Twin, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, The Chemical Brothers, Ani DiFranco, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Dr Dre Ft, Snoop Dogg, Filter, The Flaming Lips, Ben Folds Five, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Grant Hart, The Herbaliser, Jimmy Eat World, Marduk, Mindless Self Indulgence, Mint Royale Ft. His charming wife Wendy willingly spoke with him, at length, about the idiotic amount of music he selected for the episode, as well as if the titular character from "ALF" needs to be 'Me Too'd', if you can swear on a podcast, and what it's like living with terribly fragile mental health. For more information about the AWARD WINNING music blog Anhedonic Headphones, click here! Episode 9 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) The song originally appears on the 1995 Geffen Records release Liquid Swords. The theme music is a YouTube rip of the intro to BET's "Rap City: The Bassment," airing from 1999 to 2005. In today's episode, we discussed: "I Wish it Would Rain Down," written and performed by Phil Collins, taken from the 1989 Atlantic Records release, ...But Seriously. "Stranger Than Fiction," written by Brett Gurewitz and performed by Bad Religion, taken from the 1994 Atlantic Records release, Stranger Than Fiction. "Let Down" written and performed by Radiohead, taken from the 1997 Parlophone/Capitol Records release, OK Computer. "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)," written and performed by Deftones, taken from the 1997 Maverick Records release, Around The Fur. "You Got Me," written by The Roots and Jill Scott, performed by The Roots, Eve, and Erykah Badu, taken from the 1999 MCA Records release, Things Fall Apart. "The Day Brings," written and performed by Brad, taken from the 1997 Epic Records release, Interiors. "I Didn't Understand," written and performed by Elliott Smith; original studio version taken from the 1998 Dreamworks Records release XO; this version is from the Dutch Television Program "2 Meter Sessions." "Pink Rabbits," written and performed by The National, taken from the 2013 4AD release Trouble Will Find Me. "Blue Chicago Moon," written by Jason Molina and performed by Songs: Ohia, taken from the 2002 Secretly Canadian release, Didn't it Rain? "Still Space," written and performed by Satoshi Ashikawa, taken from the 2019 Light in The Attic boxed set, Kankyō Ongaku: Japanese Ambient, Environmental & New Age Music 1980-1990. Originally released on Secretly Canadian back in 2000, Molina’s voice delivers a powerful sermon over love and work. In addition, on this particular project, Jason’s unique delivery is bolstered by relatively sparse instrumentation provided by the members of Arab Strap. Needless to say, the albums is powerful, haunting, and unique as the man that made it.

In his somewhat short life, Jason Molina recorded a lot of music. In fact, as discussed in the podcast, he treated songwriting like a job, dedicating 8 hours a day to the craft. It completely explains why he was able to release something in the order of 16 albums and many EPs.  This album is often considered his magnum opus. By his own reckoning, this was his crowning achievement and after 'The Magnolia Electric Co.' was complete, many of his band and friends recognised it as being a singular work of genius. To say his life took a tragic turn after this release is something of an understatement. Booze and the road took a weighty toll on his health and close relationships, and after many stints in rehab he was found dead in his apartment, a bottle close by and nothing but a cell phone in his pocket. He had suffered multiple organ failure brought on by ten years of acute, chronic alcoholism. He was 39 years old. It seems pertinent to mention this fact because this is a dark album. Musically, it's upbeat and at times quite buoyant, but underneath it, in the lyrics, there lies an almost palpable sense of melancholy.  On this bumper episode we dive deep into his extensive discography and biography, ending it with a glorious appraisal of an album that we all feel has been disgustingly overlooked for far too long.

Many of our favorite businesses were built out of someone loving something and then figuring out how to make it better. Yvon Chouinard created Patagonia because he loved rock climbing, hiking, and being outdoors.  Everything else stemmed from that. Ben & Jerry loved ice cream, Jake Carpenter of Burton snowboards just wanted to find the perfect ride.  There are lots of reasons for someone to start a business but loving something and then working to make it better is one of the most fulfilling.  If you own a business, why did you start yours?  What do your love and how are you making it better?  The answers can drive you and frame the direction you go in the future. Our guest today loves music.  Specifically, early 90’s grunge and all of the many steps in it’s evolution into modern Indie Rock.  The way he found to make it better was to start a small record label.  To find artists he loved and help spread their music to as many people as possible.  Ben Swanson built Secretly Canadian based on a search for the right sound.  Now he helps hundreds of artists around the world record, brand, and share their music with as many ears as possible. We’re glad you joined us! Listen Here: Here are some highlights: What childhood memories led Ben to starting Secretly? (1:59) Ben grew up with his older brother Chris in Fargo, North Dakota.  His dad and his uncle built a vitamin supplement business from their garage.  Ben remembers his dad in the garage pouring powder into tiny capsules by hand.  That company is now Swanson Health Products one of the largest vitamin suppliers in the world. Ben’s dad loved music and he would take them to shows sometimes.  Fargo happened to be a stop over for bands as they traveled to the Northwest so they had the chance to see a lot of shows.  In the late 80’s early 90’s, Ben was a teenager and was able to see tons of the bands that seeded the Seattle grunge explosion of the early 90’s. He started collecting albums and paying attention to the music that certain labels put out. Eventually, his brother Chris moved to Bloomington IN for college.  Ben followed two years later and they decided it would be fun to try and start their own music label. They dug into the explosion of independent music but also loved the catalogs of labels like K Records and Discord. They finally started to figure out how to physically make records and cassettes.  Then they would go to shows of musicians they loved and see if the musician would let them be the ones to manufacture and market the album.  Their first taker was June Panic and then Songs: Ohia followed. How do you attract artists? (11:07) For Ben, it’s all about just being a fan first.  Artists tend to want people surrounding them that understand and get what they’re doing.  Ben has always just approached it that way. What’s the story behind the name Secretly Canadian? (14:05) Being from Fargo, North Dakota Ben had a connection with Canada.  They really loved and connected with a ton of Canadian talent, from music to comedy and beyond.  They started joking around about the fact that all good things must be secretly Canadian.  What’s it’s like to work with your brother? (15:35) There are definitely pros and cons.  The hard part is getting over the big brother little brother stuff.  Ben happens to be the little brother.  One positive is the short-hands that they speak.  They can get really heated and then get over it and move on.  Sometimes that would devolve into wrestling.  One of Ben’s favorite moments is when he finally won one of those wrestling matches. What does Secretly look like today? (18:18) They are a global music company.  They’re a record label, the Master side helping artist to write and pitch the music they create, physical and digital distribution throughout the world, an artist management service, and a vinyl plant. What kind of artist is an ideal client? (21:13) Incredible musician, incredible artist, smart person, sells a few records.  The bottom line is that Ben wants to love the artists music.  It can work out from there. Secretly represents Indy music artists primarily but they dig into tons of genres. What are traits of successful and unsuccessful artists? (23:35) Bands can really easily get in their bubble.  The good ones are able to connect with others.  Other artists, other industry folks, whoever will listen.  You have to reach out and build relationships.  The more you can get to know people and the industry the better you’ll do. How does it feel to own a multi-national business? Weird. What is similar and different between you and Richard Branson? Ben really likes how fearless Richard is.  He gets into a lot of different spaces, builds a lot of brands, and is always ready to grow.  That’s a similarity. Richard Branson is a totally outgoing guy with tons of other people running the show.  Ben is simply a part of the team.  His hands are on most things in a way that certainly is different than Virgin Records. A book we should totally read? The 4 Hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss An artist that we should listen to? Serpent with Feet What are the key types of people musicians should connect with? Other artists are the low hanging fruit.  Connecting with an established artist or two is the key.  Labels like Secretly hear about new artists all the time from their existing artists. What’s Secretly look like in 5 years? Not necessarily bigger, but more streamlined.  Finding ways to stay interested by chasing new ideas but not getting too sidetracked from the core mission. Special thanks to Ben Swanson for taking the time to share the Secretly Canadian story with us. The show was produced and edited by me Jeremy Goodrich. The music is by my high school buddy Mark VInten and Secretly group artists June Panic, Songs: Ohia, Bon Iver and Serpent with Feet. Prolific singer-songwriter Jason Molina released 19 albums, more than a dozen EPs, and many more singles between 1997 and his death in 2013. This week, we give a listen to the 7th and final release under the moniker Songs: Ohia; Magnolia Electric Company. For our first podcast of 2017, we welcomed special guest Matty Wishnow and what he affectionately refers to as an anthem for his 40s, Songs: Ohia. Magnolia Electric Company is at times haunting in its presentimental lyrics that feel like a farewell from a man that was clearly dealing with demons that would claim his life only 10 years later. The album, recorded by Steve Albini, marks a departure from previous Songs: Ohia releases and sets a new direction for Molina's work that he would release under the Magnolia Electric Co. band. Pick up Songs: Ohia on Amazon Shane tries to lift the mood during A Few Minutes With by reminding us that just because you can ask a girl to "sex you up" with your flip-up sunglasses and big-shouldered jackets in 1991, doesn't mean you won't be changing tires in Oklahoma in 25 years. And as a crisp, refreshing final course, Kevin brings us Sydney's Middle Kids with their single Edge of Town. Next week! We spend some time with the darling of country music (and proprietor of amusement park dreams), Dolly Parton. Join us, won't you?

This week on The One You Feed we have Timothy Showalter from Strand of Oaks. Strand of Oaks aka Timothy Showalter just released one of the years best records. Heal has been celebrated by NPR, Pitchfork, Mojo and Uncut among many others. It's one of our favorite records of the year. The story behind Heal: "From the first bars of HEAL, the exhilarating melodic stomp of 'Goshen '97' puts you right into Tim Showalter's fervent teenage mindset. We find him in his family's basement den in Goshen, IN, feeling alienated but even at 15 years old, believing in the alchemy and power of music to heal your troubles. "The record is called HEAL, but it's not a soft, gentle healing, it's like scream therapy, a command, because I ripped out my subconscious, looked through it, and saw the worst parts. And that's how I got better." HEAL embodies that feeling of catharsis and rebirth, desperation and euphoria, confusion and clarity. It is deeply personal and unwittingly anthemic.Showalter was on tour, walking home on a mild autumn night in Malmo, Sweden, when he first felt the weight of the personal crisis that would ignite him to write HEAL. "It was a culmination of pressure," Showalter recalls. "My marriage was suffering, I'd released a record I was disappointed in, I didn't like how I looked or acted...so I'd gone on tour, I was gone about two years! I didn't take time to think about failure, but I knew I was going deeper and deeper...I was thinking, I have this life, but it's not my life, I haven't done it right..."When Showalter returned, he wrote 30 songs in three weeks, a process that proved difficult, but cathartic and at times invigorating. Previous Strand Of Oaks records were more skeletal, raw examples of folk-rooted Americana with occasional rock and electronic currents, that have now come to the fore. HEAL is a bold new beginning, with a thrilling full-tilt sound that draws on Showalter's love of '70s, '80s and '90s rock and pop, with the singer and guitarist playing the intense valedictory confessor. In This Interview Tim and I Discuss... The One You Feed parable. The great success of his new record. The saddest line on his new record. The importance of feeling all of our emotions, not just the good ones. How hard it is to write uplifting music that isn't cheesy. Disliking ironic music. The redemptive power of rock and roll. How we care less about what people think as we age. The power of being our authentic selves. Becoming who we are. Avoiding the victim/villain mindset. Jason Molina of Songs:Ohia.
