After consistently eclipsing all other countries in the number of mass shootings per year, why is America still so obsessed with guns? And in the face of such a polarizing issue, what can be done to stop the killing? “A lot of people think we have a violence problem, but it doesn't seem to be the case; but where we are different is in terms of guns,” says Dr. David Hemenway of Harvard University's Injury Control Research Center. He makes the case for a public health approach which treats gun violence as an epidemic to be mitigated through practical long-term solutions. In addition, Professors Chris Hays and Carly Crouch of Fuller Theological Seminary discuss their book 'God and Guns', examining the presumed correlation between American Christianity and support of gun ownership. To close, Diane Latiker shares what peacemaking might look like on the ground in the face of such bleak realities. Christopher B. Hays, D. Wilson Moore Associate Professor of Ancient Near Eastern Studies, recalls his earliest memory of gun violence and reflects on how the words of the OT prophets might apply to today’s gun culture. On March 15–16, 2019, Fuller’s School of Theology hosted a panel of Biblical scholars to discuss how the Bible might speak to American gun culture. The panelists reflected on violence as a tool for dominance, toxic masculinity, “thoughts and prayers,” mental health issues, and various other cultural factors that create the particular gun culture in the United States today. “We need to take care of ourselves first, not selfishly, not even considering the idea of being selfish or not willing to put in the work. We need to take care of ourselves first so we can take care of our athlete’s even better.” This weeks My Thoughts Monday, Louisville’s Chris Hays reviews a letter that he wrote at the end of this tenure at George Washington University. This letter lead to a good friend “calling him out” for what he was doing. He asks the question as to how much this “badge of honor” is truly worth, and what are the sacrifices we, as coaches, are making truly worth it? This isn’t to question work ethic, or to say long day’s are bad, it’s a question as to how we can stay grounded more and not burn out as much. The issues that leads to a lot of these hours is that we do not quantify and qualify our work, and Chris touches upon idea’s with that to make sure that people are at their peek.
