Watch here: https://youtu.be/-NaJolceTlI Robert Forsyth interviews Dr. Michael Bird, who reflects on the relationship between liberalism and Christianity. Bird acknowledges the strengths of liberalism—its emphasis on individual liberty, pluralism, and democratic governance—but warns that when liberalism becomes detached from its Christian moral and philosophical roots, it risks undermining the very values it seeks to uphold. He argues that a purely secular liberalism can drift into relativism or moral vacuity, leaving society vulnerable to fragmentation. For liberal democracy to thrive, Bird suggests, it must remain tethered to a deeper moral vision—one that Christianity has historically provided.
Watch now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HRlHwPrD850 Robert Forsyth interviews Glenn Fahey, director of the education program at the Centre for Independent Studies (CIS), who explores why a classical liberal think tank is deeply engaged in education policy. Fahey argues that education is the great enabler of freedom—central to the classical liberal vision of a society where individuals can shape their own lives. He explains that without access to high-quality education, people are denied the knowledge and skills necessary to participate in the economy, civic life, and democratic decision-making. Glenn Fahey also discusses the science of learning and how society is slowly getting back to evidence-based education approaches. Watch here: https://youtu.be/o6TVilPFQxo Robert Forsyth speaks with Rohan McHugh, who contends that the liberal tradition's “contest of ideas” — though vital for intellectual refinement — does not conflict with the enduring boundaries that have sustained Western civilization for millennia. These boundaries have been upheld by long-standing institutions and validated by their outcomes. While the classical liberal model deserves affirmation, McHugh argues it should be recognized as incomplete, especially when treated as a rigid framework that excludes metaphysical foundations. As American founding father John Adams famously stated, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
Watch here: https://youtu.be/9kHg5sDRbHE In this episode, we delve into the controversial world of the Intellectual Dark Web (IDW) with guest Jamie Q. Roberts, a political theorist and commentator on digital discourse and dissent. We unpack the origins of the IDW, a loose network of academics, commentators, and public intellectuals who challenge mainstream narratives on culture, politics, and identity. Roberts explores how the IDW gained traction online, its appeal to audiences disillusioned with traditional institutions, and the tensions it reveals within liberal democratic societies. From free speech debates to culture wars, Joe Rogan to Sam Harris, we examine the influence and contradictions of this online movement—and what its rise tells us about the state of public intellectual life in the digital age. In this epic episode of The Courtenay Turner Podcast, Courtenay welcomes first-time guest Van Harvey, the legendary mind behind Blogodidact. Renowned for his incisive explorations into education, philosophy, and history, Harvey brings rare depth to a conversation that challenges listeners to rethink the very foundations of Western thought. A Journey Through Realism, Nominalism, and Ideology Together, Courtenay and Van embark on a sweeping journey through the pivotal moments that have shaped Western civilization. They dive deep into the enduring debate between Realism and Nominalism and explore how these philosophical perspectives have profoundly influenced education and the rise of ideology. Drawing from Van's latest article, "Why 1st Principles? Narratives That Capture the Mind", the discussion uncovers how the shift from Classical Liberal values to modern ideological systems has transformed not only our schools, but our entire cultural and political landscape. From Founders to the “Wizard's Circle” Listeners are guided through the underappreciated consequences of this intellectual pivot: the replacement of philosophy with ideology and economics, the rise of credentialism over true knowledge, and the emergence of top-down systems of control that still dominate education and politics today. Harvey's analysis traces the roots of contemporary confusion-across the political spectrum-back to the 19th-century introduction of ideology, championed by figures like Thomas Jefferson and Destutt de Tracy. Why This Episode Matters If you're passionate about education, philosophy, history, or the principles of Classical Liberalism, this episode is a must-listen. Harvey and Turner shed light on how philosophical shifts-from the ancient Greeks to the present-have shaped today's debates over truth, knowledge, and the purpose of education. Their conversation offers listeners new tools to question the narratives we're told-and the ones we tell ourselves. “Ideologies were invented so that men who do not think can give their opinions.” - Nicolás Gómez Dávila Key topics include: • The impact of Realism vs. Nominalism on education and philosophy • The origins and consequences of ideology in Western history • The decline of Classical Liberal principles in modern education • How philosophical shifts have shaped today's political and cultural narratives Tune in now to explore the hidden history of education, philosophy, and ideology with Van Harvey and Courtenay Turner! ▶ Follow & Connect with Van Harvey: Website Twitter 'First Questions; First Principles' __________________________________________________________________ ▶ GET On-Demand Access for Courtenay's Cognitive Liberty Conference Cognitive liberty Conference ----------------------------------------- ▶ Follow & Connect with Courtenay: CourtenayTurner.com Linktree ▶ Support my work & Affiliate links: Buy Me A Coffee GiveSendGo Venmo Cash APP RNC Store Vitamin B-17! This week on The Learning Curve, co-hosts Alisha Searcy of DFER and U-Arkansas Prof. Albert Cheng interview Dr. Helen Baxendale, the chief of staff and vice president of strategy at Great Hearts Academies. Dr. Baxendale discusses how her global educational experiences inform her perspective on K-12 policy and Great Hearts' mission to integrate the humanities, math, and science for intellectual and character development. She explains how Great Hearts uses classical texts by Plato, Aristotle, and African-American thinkers like W.E.B. Du Bois and MLK to teach justice and democracy amid today's social divisions. Dr. Baxendale also shares the school's approach to teacher preparation, navigating regulations, and competing in choice-rich, historically lower-performing NAEP states. She concludes with insights into the importance of the classical liberal arts for preparing students for both higher education and the workforce, and her vision for improving U.S. K-12 outcomes.
Interpreting History through a Classical Liberal Lens with Professor Michael Douma In this episode of The Rational Egoist, host Michael Liebowitz welcomes Professor Michael J. Douma, Associate Professor of History at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business, to discuss the classical liberal method of interpreting history. Douma explains how a classical liberal approach values individual agency, economic freedom, and limited government while examining historical events. Through this lens, they explore how understanding history from a classical liberal perspective can reveal insights often overlooked in mainstream historical narratives. Tune in for an enlightening conversation on how this approach shapes our understanding of the past and informs our views on current events. Michael Leibowitz, host of The Rational Egoist podcast, is a philosopher and political activist who draws inspiration from Ayn Rand's philosophy, advocating for reason, rational self-interest, and individualism. His journey from a 25-year prison sentence to a prominent voice in the libertarian and Objectivist communities highlights the transformative impact of embracing these principles. Leibowitz actively participates in political debates and produces content aimed at promoting individual rights and freedoms. In recent decades, classical education has experienced significant growth both in the U.S. and globally. This educational approach takes various forms, including traditional five-day programs, hybrid/collaborative models, and homeschooling. Alongside these formats, a flurry of terms like “classical Christian,” “Christian classical,” “classical liberal arts,” and “humanities education” have emerged. Understanding and distinguishing among these options can be complex for schools and parents alike. Today, Dr. Chris Schlect, Director of the Classical and Christian Studies at New Saint Andrews College, joins us to help clarify these terms and explore their significance in shaping the next generation through our homes and schools. Wokal Distance and Dave "The Distributist" debate the tensions between the "Classical Liberal" center-right and the "Neo-Reactionary" far-right—and don't ever really get around to telling me explicitly why race always dominates these sorts of conversations. This is an abridged repost, with fixed audio, of the debate between @TheDistributist & @wokaldistance7000 that streamed on August 30th, 2023. For more information about upcoming events, please visit our website at www.thomisticinstitute.org. About the speaker: Erik Dempsey (PhD, Boston College) is the Assistant Director of University of Texas at Austin's Thomas Jefferson for the Study of Core Texts and Ideas. He completed his doctorate at Boston College in June 2007. He is interested in understanding human virtue, and the proper place of politics in a well-lived human life, the different ways in which human virtue is understood in different political situations, and the ways in which human virtue may transcend any political situation. His dissertation looks at Aristotle's treatment of prudence in the Nicomachean Ethics, and Aristotle's suggestion that virtue should be understood as an end in itself. He is adding a discussion of Thomas's discussion on Aristotle in order to prepare the dissertation as a book. He teaches many classes for the Thomas Jefferson Center, including, Jerusalem and Athens (on the ethical and political teaching of the Bible and Aristotle); Theoretical Foundations of Modern Politics; The Bible and Its Interpreters; The Question of Relativism; Ancient Philosophy and Literature; and American Political Thought.

Classical Liberal, celebrated author, retired lawyer, and Smart Person Helen Dale regales the Dorx with a history of "hate speech", citing Marbury vs. Madison, the Allport Scale, John Stuart Mill, entrenched judicial review, decolonization and anti-colonization movements, the pernicious influence of the Soviet Union, and COMMIE NONSENSE. Nina interrupts her a few times to discuss the incitement of mobs, Kellie-Jay Keene's US tour, and why Dale thinks feminism is “mad.” After a short vape break, Dale returns to Liberal Toryism, freedom of association, Hadrian's Rescript, loos in developing countries, “non-crime hate incidents” in the UK, the marketplace of ideas, and why “lobbyists are bonkers”. Can the Law save humanity from itself? Listen up and pay attention, because Dale's citations fly faster than the pages of a thrown encyclopedia. A conversation with Lee Ward about his recent book, "Recovering Classical Liberal Political Economy: Natural Rights and the Harmony of Interests" (Edinburgh UP).
Philipp Bagus of Mises says we should read John Stuart Mill response to a pandemic. Mill believed you can't force people to be tested or confined. Just because you didn't believe in lockdowns, doesn't mean you don't care about people. We also discuss a response to the pandemic in a free society.
Following a successful Phoenix stop on Dave Rubin's tour to promote his new book, 'Don't Burn This Country,' (in which Charlie made his stand-up comedy debut) Dave joined The Charlie Kirk Show live from our new studio to talk with Charlie about the importance of Free Speech, the rise of 'liberal elitism' in America, his conversion from Classical Liberal to bona fide conservative, Big Tech, and much more. From there, they discuss their points of rational disagreement within the movement and highlight how conversation and the free exchange of ideas can actually strengthen American conservatism, and in turn: the nation. They talk about what comes next for our republic and if it is the mark of a responsible nation to entrust our future in the hands of octogenarians like Nancy Pelosi before concluding the episode with a behind-the-scenes look at the fight for free speech online happening on platforms like Rumble and Locals.
