For the past nine years, Hans-Peter Plag has taken on the perspective of an alien ecologist coming to Earth. And when he looks at Earth, he sees a crisis of overgrowth. Humans, he says, have become a virus. If we don't learn to do more with less, he fears that we will irreparably disrupt the planetary system that keeps us alive. And: America is one of the largest donors to global humanitarian aid. But the sheer size and red tape involved in the emergency response can inadvertently undermine the goal to help people in need. Daniel Beers says there's a global movement towards working more with local organizations where these humanitarian crises happen because the people closest to the crisis are uniquely aware of how to create efficient solutions. Later in the show: The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights allows states to suspend certain rights during emergencies, but only if necessary. Evan Criddle says that in the past 25 years, American presidents have invoked emergency powers with increasing frequency. And those measures have been deeply controversial. Plus: It's reassuring to know that wherever we are across the country, we can rely on a warm and comforting voice to get us the help we need just by dialing 9-1-1. Liz Ellcessor says that 9-1-1 is an intricate national media network of hyperlocal dispatch centers.
The right to a speedy trial is a fundamental legal principle in many legal systems, including the United States, designed to protect the rights and interests of individuals accused of a crime. Here is a full summary of what the right to a speedy trial means:Legal Right: The right to a speedy trial is a constitutional or statutory right granted to individuals facing criminal charges. In the United States, it is protected by the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution.Timely Adjudication: It guarantees that a defendant has the right to have their case adjudicated in a timely and expeditious manner. This means that the legal process should move forward promptly from the time of arrest to trial.Reasonable Timeframe: While the exact definition of a "speedy" trial can vary from one jurisdiction to another, it generally implies that the accused should not have to endure unnecessary delays in the criminal justice process.Purpose: The primary purpose of this right is to prevent injustices that may arise from prolonged pretrial detention or the delay in bringing a case to trial. It helps ensure that a person is not held in jail for an extended period without facing formal charges and trial.Balancing Act: Courts must strike a balance between the defendant's right to a speedy trial and the state's interest in conducting a thorough and fair trial. This may involve considering factors like the complexity of the case, the availability of witnesses, and the reasons for any delays.Dismissal as a Remedy: If the right to a speedy trial is violated, it can lead to the dismissal of the charges against the defendant. This serves as a deterrent against prosecutorial and judicial misconduct that might unnecessarily delay a trial.Factors Considered: Courts typically consider several factors in determining whether a defendant's right to a speedy trial has been violated. These factors may include the length of the delay, the reasons for the delay, the defendant's assertion of their right, and any prejudice suffered by the defendant as a result of the delay.Waiver: In some cases, a defendant may choose to waive their right to a speedy trial if they believe it's in their best interest to delay the proceedings for strategic reasons, such as giving their legal team more time to prepare.International Context: The right to a speedy trial is recognized not only in the United States but also in international human rights law, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. These documents emphasize the importance of a fair and timely trial.Importance: Ensuring a speedy trial is crucial for safeguarding the rights of the accused, preventing unnecessary incarceration, and maintaining public confidence in the criminal justice system.(commercial at 7:57)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Kohberger Idaho murder trial not expected until at least 2024 | Idaho Statesman
Children trying to seek refuge in Australia have been detained on Nauru. If Newsom signed the bill, illegal aliens would be eligible for a new program that offers a loan worth 20% of the purchase price of the residential property. There are no monthly payments and no interest accrues on the loan. Rather, the loan is paid back when the borrower refinances or sells the property. The borrower will have to pay back the original loan plus a 20% increase in the value of the property. After the California Senate advanced the bill allowing illegal aliens to apply for the state's first-time homebuyer's program, the California Department of Finance confirmed the program has no money to give. Governor Newsom vetoed the bill because of a lack of funds. “I am returning Assembly Bill 1840 without my signature,” Newsom wrote in his veto message to the members of the California State Assembly. “Given the finite funding available for CalHFA programs, expanding program eligibility must be carefully considered within the broader context of the annual state budget to ensure we manage our resources effectively,” he said. “For this reason, I am unable to sign this bill,” Newsom wrote. This is a qualified win for Second Amendment advocates and, arguably, for the state of New Jersey. While the decision once more acknowledges the Bruen decision, it also side-steps the magazine capacity issue. This decision will be appealed, and almost certainly by both sides. The magazine ban issue, which rankles (rightly) the pro-Second Amendment side will be challenged, while New Jersey will certainly appeal the decision on the AR-15. For now, though, Second Amendment advocates can celebrate a win - even if it is a mixed blessing - and gird themselves for the next round in this never-ending fight. The rules would give automakers more time to facilitate the EV transition, with looser emissions standards meaning that automakers would have until after 2030 to switch over the bulk of their production, as opposed to just a few years under current regulations, according to the NYT. President Joe Biden has long sought to curry the favor of union workers, particularly the United Auto Workers, who endorsed the president in the 2024 presidential election last month but are wary of the effect that an EV transition could have on their current jobs, as less labor is required to produce an EV and their production is not covered under the same union contract The Biden administration's goals of electrifying America's vehicles have faced severe headwinds from poor demand, with sales only increasing from 3.1% in January 2023 to 3.6% in December 2023 in terms of market value despite an increase in the share of inventory from 2.8% to 5.7% in that same time frame. The administration's rollout of EV chargers has also run into red tape, leading to only two charging stations being built as of December despite $7.5 billion in allocated funds. Source: dailycaller.com The U.S. Government Will Soon Spend More on Interest Payments Than Defense© Alexandra Citrin-Safadi/WSJ The U.S. government is expected to pay an additional $1.1 trillion in interest over the coming decade, according to the Congressional Budget Office's latest estimates. Interest costs are on pace to surpass defense this year as one of the largest government expenses in the budget. Only Social Security and Medicare are forecast to be bigger burdens in the coming years. The U.S. government raises money by auctioning Treasury bonds to a swath of global investors. The bigger the deficit, the more bonds it must issue to finance otherwise unfunded spending. Investors could demand higher yields to buy the deluge of Treasurys, which would hurt bond prices. Ultimately, higher borrowing costs on such things as mortgages and corporate loans would slow the economy as consumer spending and business investment wane. These documents emphasize the importance of a fair and timely trial.Importance: Ensuring a speedy trial is crucial for safeguarding the rights of the accused, preventing unnecessary incarceration, and maintaining public confidence in the criminal justice system.(commercial at 7:57)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Kohberger Idaho murder trial not expected until at least 2024 | Idaho StatesmanThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5080327/advertisement

It was formally established in New York in 1941 to promote American involvement in World War II and the fight against fascism. From the beginning, Freedom House was notable for its bipartisan support. Freedom House's founders were prominent and influential leaders from the fields of business and labor, journalism, academia, and government. A central figure among its early leaders was First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Wendell Willkie, the Republican presidential nominee who ran against President Roosevelt in 1940, was also an ardent supporter and served as honorary co-chair along with Mrs. Roosevelt. Initially, the mission of Freedom House was to counter isolationism, a powerful force promoted by the America First Committee. At the time, ninety percent of American citizens were opposed to involvement in the European war, even as Nazi tanks rolled across the continent and concentration camps began to fill with people. The leaders of Freedom House argued that Hitler posed a grave threat to American security and values. Should we ally with the Left or the Right? On one hand, the Liberal party has appealed to Muslim rights as a minority group, while the Conservative party aligns with our moral values. Muslim political involvement is a fairly recent trend, and our alliances speak to more than just our personal preferences. How can we secure our rights in a secular democracy while also pushing back against policies that go against our beliefs, such as the open promotion of LGBTQ ideas in our schools? Imam Tom Facchine invites Dr. Mobeen Vaid to recount the history of Muslim political involvement and activism, as well as to discuss ways to maneuver the political landscape while staying true to our faith.
Thursday, June 15th, 2023 Frank Guridy is the Executive Director of the Eric H. Holder Initiative for Civil and Political Rights at Columbia University and the Dr. Kenneth and Kareitha Forde Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies. We discuss social movements in the past, present, and future. Social movements consist of mass participation from outside of established political structures to address grievances or to pursue larger social goals. They are often long term endeavors that might not fully achieve their goals but nonetheless move the needle in social attitudes. Sometimes they achieve the unthinkable, like freedom from slavery or marriage equality. “What Are Human Rights? Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, or any other status. Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more. Everyone is entitled to these rights, without discrimination. International Human Rights Law International human rights law lays down the obligations of Governments to act in certain ways or to refrain from certain acts, in order to promote and protect human rights and fundamental freedoms of individuals or groups. One of the great achievements of the United Nations is the creation of a comprehensive body of human rights law—a universal and internationally protected code to which all nations can subscribe and all people aspire. The United Nations has defined a broad range of internationally accepted rights, including civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. It has also established mechanisms to promote and protect these rights and to assist states in carrying out their responsibilities. The foundations of this body of law are the Charter of the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the General Assembly in 1945 and 1948, respectively. Since then, the United Nations has gradually expanded human rights law to encompass specific standards for women, children, persons with disabilities, minorities and other vulnerable groups, who now possess rights that protect them from discrimination that had long been common in many societies.” “Economic, social and cultural rights The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights entered into force in 1976. The human rights that the Covenant seeks to promote and protect include: the right to work in just and favourable conditions; the right to social protection, to an adequate standard of living and to the highest attainable standards of physical and mental well-being; the right to education and the enjoyment of benefits of cultural freedom and scientific progress. Civil and political rights The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and its First Optional Protocol entered into force in 1976. The Second Optional Protocol was adopted in 1989. The Covenant deals with such rights as freedom of movement; equality before the law; the right to a fair trial and presumption of innocence; freedom of thought, conscience and religion; freedom of opinion and expression; peaceful assembly; freedom of association; participation in public affairs and elections; and protection of minority rights. It prohibits arbitrary deprivation of life; torture, cruel or degrading treatment or punishment; slavery and forced labour; arbitrary arrest or detention; arbitrary interference with privacy; war propaganda; discrimination; and advocacy of racial or religious hatred.” Churches should oppose anti-social behavior as Jesus' followers (that's what I meant for clarification purposes.) The church should be actively against both intimate partner violence and intimidate partner sexual violence because of Jesus. There are churches who displease Jesus due to their support of registered and unregistered violent offenders (sex offenders and non-sex offenders.) Social justice goes to bed with Jesus according to certain scriptures. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

Economic rights are associated with ownership. Examples include choosing the work one wants to do, acquiring and disposing of property, entering into contracts. Political rights address political participation, such as voting and supporting particular candidates for office. Center for Civic Education
"Building on Hume, we see that the fallibility of human reasoning means that a person cannot obtain absolute certainty in any matter save for trivial cases where a statement is true by definition (as in, "all bachelors are unmarried" or "all triangles have three angles"). All rational statements that assert a factual claim about the universe which begin with the statement "I believe that..." are simply shorthand for the statement "based on my knowledge, understanding, and interpretation of the prevailing evidence, I tentatively believe that..." For instance, when one says, "I believe that Lee Harvey Oswald shot John F. Kennedy," said person is not asserting an absolute truth but rather a tentative belief based on an interpretation of the evidence assembled before them. Even though one may set an alarm clock at night, fully believing that the sun will rise the next day, that belief is tentative, tempered by a small but finite degree of doubt, since there is always some infinitesimal measure of possibility that the sun might explode or that that person might die, and so on." https://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Agnosticism --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support
Here are many forms of Christlikeness: "Civil and political rights The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and its First Optional Protocol entered into force in 1976. Human Rights Conventions A series of international human rights treaties and other instruments adopted since 1945 have expanded the body of international human rights law. They include the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (1948), the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (1965), the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (1979), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006), among others." Classical Liberal, celebrated author, retired lawyer, and Smart Person Helen Dale regales the Dorx with a history of "hate speech", citing Marbury vs. Madison, the Allport Scale, John Stuart Mill, entrenched judicial review, decolonization and anti-colonization movements, the pernicious influence of the Soviet Union, and COMMIE NONSENSE. Nina interrupts her a few times to discuss the incitement of mobs, Kellie-Jay Keene's US tour, and why Dale thinks feminism is “mad.” After a short vape break, Dale returns to Liberal Toryism, freedom of association, Hadrian's Rescript, loos in developing countries, “non-crime hate incidents” in the UK, the marketplace of ideas, and why “lobbyists are bonkers”. Can the Law save humanity from itself? Listen up and pay attention, because Dale's citations fly faster than the pages of a thrown encyclopedia.
