Today, I'm joined by Dr. Claude Berube, and we're discussing the Leadership of Admiral Rickover. Claude wrote his doctoral dissertation on the Navy during Andrew Jackson's presidency, which became the book On Wide Seas. He has worked on political campaigns, as an analyst and team leader at the Office of Naval Intelligence, as a national security fellow in the U.S. Senate, and as a defense contractor for Naval Sea Systems Command and the Office of Naval Research. He is concluding nearly 20 years of teaching at the U.S. Naval Academy. He retired as a Commander from the US Navy Reserves, where he was an intelligence officer. His third novel, The Philippine Pact, came out earlier this year, and his fifth non-fiction book, Rickover Uncensored, is now available. I'm excited to have him on the show to talk about the life and leadership of Admiral Rickover, a man who had a tremendous impact on the U.S. submarine force. We now have a broad collection of Rickover in his own word is the just published collection of his papers, Rickover Uncensored, edited by Claude Berube, Samuel Limneos. From the book's Amazon page;"Nearly 250 archival boxes full of his personal papers were bequeathed to the U.S. Naval Academy Museum. Outside of his official biographer, no historian had access to these documents. Berube has held the rank of Commander in the Navy Reserve, worked at the Office of Naval Intelligence, the US Senate and served as an instructor at the US Naval Academy, where his courses included Naval History, American Government, Intelligence & National Security and Terrorism. Gina Tranquada is a 37 year old occupational therapist, runner, wife and mother of 2 children from Winnipeg, MB. After playing many sports while a teenager, Gina found herself getting more into running while in college. Despite having a young family and a busy career, Gina has continued to foster the fire that started to burn during that time and has excelled in a variety of distances and races. She has won the Manitoba Marathon twice and the half marathon once. In his 30-year career, he has worked as a defense contractor for Naval Sea Systems Command and the Office of Naval Research, as a staffer on Capitol Hill for two U.S. Senators and a member of Congress, and teaching at the U.S. Naval Academy in the Political Science and History Departments. A Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, he has served at the Office of Naval Intelligence, CNO's Deep Red, at Joint Task Force Guantanamo Bay, Joint Analysis Center Molesworth England, and deployed on USS Bunker Hill to the Middle East.In addition to his four non-fiction books, he is the author of more than 60 articles, and this third novel in the Connor Stark series will be published this fall.

What might that mean for the Navy? How did Andrew Jackson approach his Navy and what lessons can we draw from that?Our guest for the full hour for a discussion of an understudied part of our naval history and what it could mean for the current administration is returning guest Claude Berube.Claude is the Director of the Naval Academy Museum and has taught in both the Political Science and History Departments at the Naval Academy. He has worked in the U.S. Senate, as a maritime studies fellow at the Heritage Foundation, as the head of a terrorism analysis team for the Office of Naval Intelligence and as a defense contractor. An intelligence officer in the Navy Reserve, he deployed with Expeditionary Strike Group Five in 2004-05. His articles have been published in Orbis, Vietnam Magazine, Naval History, The Washington Times, Jane’s Intelligence Review, Naval Institute Proceedings and others. He’s also written or co-authored five books.
