Actor and newly named Director of Education at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts Natalie Cutcher taught us a lot about the Italian theater acting genre of "Commedia dell'Arte" - the highly physical and improvisational style of acting with roots in the 1500's. Also hear her entertaining story about her first foray into acting during her elementary school days, what is happening at the Conservatory, and her role in the sci-fi podcast entitled EOS10.

There's a curious collection of 18th-century porcelain figurines displayed on the second floor of the Gardiner Museum. Set amidst an impressive display of European ceramic table wear and figurines, this small assortment of Harlequin sculptures don dark masks that stand out for contemporary audiences. One of the colorful sculptures is by Wenzel Neu and hails from the Kloster-Veilsdorf Porcelain Factory in Germany, c. 1764–65, and beside it is a sign that asks, "Is Harlequin in blackface?" In this episode, we talk to Professor Cheryl Thompson, anti-racist educator Rania El Mugammar, and the Gardiner's Chief Curator Sequoia Miller about this figurine that portrays a character from the Commedia dell'Arte that was a precursor to the more violently racialized images of blackface in 19th and 20th-century minstrel shows. We explore the long history of blackface in Canada, and how one museum is adapting to tell the stories that its collection provokes with contemporary audiences. A special thanks to musician SunSon for providing the music to this special series, which is produced by Hyperallergic in conjunction with the Gardiner Museum. A concept created to inspire audiences and delight children can sometimes take on an unnerving and nightmarish form. With painted faces and bouquets of balloons, they lurk on street corners or wait for you in the woods, luring children and frightening adults. Are they simply teenage pranksters or is there something more sinister at play?

Eleven years after the iconic, genius, frustrating, scintillating, upsetting finale—the cut-to-black heard round the world, we’re jumping headfirst into the underworld of New Jersey crime, and into the den of the Sopranos. HBO’s critically acclaimed series captured viewers instantly by asking a simple question: what if a mob boss went to therapy? But instead of turning it into a punchline, the show used that springboard to open up questions about humanity, mental illness, family, and the American Dream. Now Derek and Laurel pull apart the characters, the influences, and the ultimate successes and failures of the series that brought epic, romantic stories back down to earth. Brief lessons on Italian Opera, the theatrical form Commedia dell’Arte, and the most famous thought experiment in quantum mechanics. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/midnightmyth/support

At age 14, Carine Montbertrand recalls, “I remember watching a dance performance and it was so exciting. I said to myself, ‘This is what I want to do.’ I did the conventional going to college and stuff like that, which I'm glad I did. But, ever since then, even if people in my family didn't want me to do it, I still knew, deep inside, that’s what I was going to do, whether I said it out loud or not.” As a professional actress, she has performed off Broadway and throughout the U.S. She is an award winning narrator of audiobooks and is an acting teacher specializing in Commedia dell'Arte. Carine has also donated her time at New York City’s Rikers Island as part of an outreach program of the Stella Adler Studio School of Acting.
By now it's clear that Shakespeare drew inspiration from a variety of sources. Robert Henke, a professor of drama and comparative literature at Washington University in St. Louis, studies the Bard in the European context and particularly his Italian sources and influences. He reveals the fingerprints of the famous Italian theater troupe, the Commedia dell'Arte, in Shakespeare's comedies and discusses the Italian plays and novellas at the heart of Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew.
Markus Zohner incontra Alessandro Marchetti negli studi di PETRUSHKA a Verbania / Italia. Alessandro Marchetti: attore, regista, maestro della Commedia dell'Arte, pittore, scultore. Figlio d'arte.
