Wellness + Wisdom | Episode 734 How is poor sleep quietly sabotaging your health, performance, and relationships? Dr. Kirk Parsley, Performance Enhancement Physician + former SEAL, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 734, to uncover the shocking truth about mainstream sleep drugs and how they hijack natural processes like GABA without delivering true rest, how high-stress lifestyles demand recovery strategies, and why optimizing your sleep might just be the missing key to a better life, stronger communication, and lasting emotional resilience. "When you don't sleep very well, you're choosing to age faster. If you stay up for 20 hours, you've added 4 hours of damage, which means your brain is aging 25% faster. If you do this regularly, you will get neurological decline." - Dr. Kirk Parsley Get 20% Off Dr. Parsley's Sleep Remedy Sleep Remedy is designed to enhance the quality of your sleep, helping you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. Sleep experts meticulously formulated this product to naturally align with your body's sleep mechanisms, providing a non-habit-forming solution to improve nightly rest. Dr. Kirk Parsley's Sleep Remedy works by supplementing your body's own production of sleep-inducing molecules like melatonin, magnesium, and a special blend of amino acids. 20% OFF WITH CODE "JOSH20" In This Episode, Kirk Parsley MD Uncovers: [01:05] The Dangers of Sleep Drugs Kirk Parsley MD 125 Dr. Kirk Parsley – Sleep To Win 256 Navigating Transitions In Relationships, Health, and Wealth: Dr. Kirk Parsley & Krisstina Wise How the pharmaceutical industry formulates sleep products. What happens in the body when we go to sleep. Why our body creates inflammation when we don't manage to get rid of the waste product. How calcified plaque is created in the body. [44:55] Chronic Sleep Deprivation = Neurological Decline? How psychiatric illnesses are highly impacted by sleep. What chronobiology has discovered about psychiatric patients and their mental health in relation to circadian rhythm. Why being awake is catabolic and being asleep is anabolic. How we repair our stress levels while we sleep. Why immediately after working out we are weaker and we need to repair during our sleep. How aging affects our capacity to repair our body. Why long-term lack of sleep makes us age faster. How releasing stress hormones can help us repair if we don't get enough sleep. Why we're the only stress-deprived species on Earth. [54:20] How to Navigate Sleep Deprivation As a Parent Why co-sleeping with our children is not essential. How each child has different sleep needs. Why Kirk repressed a lot of his childhood anger and trauma. How he used to pull all-nighters when he was studying, working, and raising his children. Why sleeping 4 to 5 hours a day for several years caused Kirk's health to decline. How he was helping the SEALs with their health issues but wasn't helping himself. Why the consequence of suffering was that he got tired of suffering. Leave Wellness + Wisdom a Review on Apple Podcasts Power Quotes From The Show Lack of Sleep = Threat? "The only animal on this planet that sleep deprives itself on purpose is us. It makes evolutionary sense that our brains perceive lack of sleep as famine or threat because there's some kind of stressor going on. That is why people who don't sleep well or don't sleep enough have higher amygdala tone and higher stress hormones." - Dr. Kirk Parsley Benefits of Sleep "It takes 8 hours to recover from being awake for 16 hours. The benefit of sleep is the hormone production, the repair, the acceleration of your immune system, the consolidation of memories, the categorization of emotional events." - Dr. Kirk Parsley Your Brain Creates Waste Products "When you go to sleep, the neurons that hold the structure of the brain contract about 30% and they create little channels for the cerebral spinal fluid to flow through. There are ways for it to clear and get outside of the blood brain barrier and get rid of your waste products. If you don't clear that, it's toxic. It's a waste product. It'd be like if you leave feces in your living room, you don't get rid of it, it's toxic. And what happens is that your brain or your body attacks it. It's like a foreign object. So it's an inflammatory response." - Dr. Kirk Parsley Links From Today's Show  Kirk Parsley MD 125 Dr. Kirk Parsley – Sleep To Win 256 Navigating Transitions In Relationships, Health, and Wealth: Dr. Kirk Parsley & Krisstina Wise 591 Dr. John Lieurance | Biohacking Big Souls: How UFC Fighters + Big Wave Surfers Holistically Heal William Dement The Upside of Stress by Kelly McGonigal MD 692 Paul Chek | Spirit Gym: How To Find The Truth of Your Soul + Live Your Dream   Josh's Trusted Products | Up To 40% Off Shop All Products Biohacking MANNA Vitality - Save 20% with code JOSH20 HigherDOSE - 15% off with the code JOSH15 PLUNGE - $150 off with discount code WELLNESSFORCE Pulsetto - Save 20% with code "JOSH" SaunaSpace - 10% off with discount code JOSH10 Ultrahuman Ring Air - 10% off with code JOSH Wellness Test Kits Choose Joi - Save 50% on all Lab Tests with JOSH Blokes - Save 50% on all Lab Tests with JOSH FertilityWize Test by Clockwize - Save 10% with code JOSH Tiny Health Gut Tests - $20 off with discount code JOSH20 VIVOO Health Tests - Save 30% off with code JOSH SiPhox Health Blood Test - Save 15% off with code JOSH Nutrition + Gut Health Organifi - 20% off with discount code WELLNESSFORCE SEED Synbiotic - 25% off with the code 25JOSHTRENT Paleovalley -  Save 15% off here! Dr Jason Sonners nye bøker:The Art and Science of Hyperbaric Medicine og The fulfilled Physician -"your dream Practice Blueprint"Course in London: https://www.thehbotcourse.com/offers/omD9J5KY/checkoutHjemmeside: https://hbotusa.comInstagram: @hbotusa @drs_sonners Tidligere episoder med Dr. Jason: https://podcasts.apple.com/no/podcast/biohacking-girls-podcast/id1558343232?l=nb&i=1000639868355Takk til våre samarbeidspartneren i denne episoden og rabattkoder:SUPERSTATE: Rabattkode: BG20 SKINOME: Rabattkode: Biohackinggirls20 Hjemmeside: https://www.skinome.comOSLO SKIN LAB/KOLLAGEN: Rabattkode: Biohacking60 Hjemmeside: https://www.osloskinlab.no

Kirk Parsley completed SEAL training at the age of 19 and served as a 60-gunner on SEAL Team Five in Coronado, California. He left the SEAL community in 1994 to pursue a college education. Later, he re-entered the US Navy to attend the military's medical school in Bethesda, Maryland, where he was commissioned as a Navy Officer in 2000.After completing medical school, internship, and residency, Kirk returned to the SEAL teams as the physician for the West Coast SEAL teams. Kirk was tasked with helping the world's most elite warriors optimize and maintain their performance after eight years of sustained combat. It was during this period that he noticed a significant gap between "healthcare" and true "health."Kirk was compelled to delve into extensive alternative medical literature, synthesizing and applying it effectively and practically to ensure the SEALs could perform at their peak 365 days a year. Performance and fitness are related components of a SEAL's ability, but they are not synonymous.Due to the limitations and restrictions of medical interventions available in austere environments with limited medical support, Kirk had to develop plans that relied minimally on pharmaceuticals, supplements, or gadgets. His unparalleled success led him to become a sought-after medical human performance expert, not only for Navy SEALs but also for various military special forces commands. He parlayed this experience into private consulting for professional sports teams, international corporations, law enforcement, first responders, the Department of Justice, entrepreneurs, and executives.Dr. Parsley has collaborated with numerous elite performers, achieving remarkable results in optimizing their physical, cognitive, and emotional performance. His philosophy is straightforward: our bodies are built on a 100,000+ year-old model, and we perform best by emulating the lifestyle we evolved to live as closely as possible, striving to attain the health metrics of our 25-year-old selves. Kirk firmly believes that 80% of health is derived from focusing on Sleep, Nutrition, Exercise, and Stress mitigation, with a strong emphasis on Sleep. Kirk is certified in Hyperbaric Medicine, Anti-Aging Medicine, Hormone Replacement Therapy, and is currently pursuing national certification in Psychedelic Medicine Therapies. He dedicates a significant portion of his time to advising non-profit organizations that support the SEAL community and providing healthcare guidance and treatment to veterans. Operating his practice and supplement business from Austin, Texas, Kirk is an avid outdoorsman and fitness enthusiast. When he's not working or working out, you can usually find him in nature, continuously enhancing his medical skills. SHOWNOTES:

Simon's correct title reads... Professor Simon Mitchell MB ChB, PhD, DipOccMed, DipAdvDHM (ANZCA), FUHM, FANZCA, Department of Anaesthesiology, University of Auckland.  This clearly does not fit in the title of this episode however, it goes a LONG way to explaining why Simon is one of the top dogs when it comes to being able to pour a healthy amount of clarity over the common confusions between decompression sickness, decompression illness, and arterial gas embolism. Simon is a physician and scientist with specialist training in diving medicine and anesthesiology. He is widely published with over 150 papers or book chapters. He co-authored the 5th edition of 'Diving and Subaquatic Medicine' and has two chapters on decompression illness in the most recent edition of Bennett and Elliott. He has twice been Vice President of the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society (USA) and in 2010 received the society's Behnke Award for contributions to the science of diving and hyperbaric medicine. In the past, Simon was a naval diving medical officer and medical director of the Wesley Centre for Hyperbaric Medicine in Brisbane. He now works as a consultant anaesthetist at Auckland City Hospital, and Professor in Anaesthesiology at the University of Auckland. He provides on-call cover for diving and hyperbaric emergencies at the North Shore Hospital Hyperbaric Unit in Auckland. Simon assumed the role of Editor of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine in January 2019. Simon's diving career has included more than 6,000 dives spanning sport, scientific, commercial, and military diving. He has been a lead member of teams that were the first to dive and identify three deep wrecks of high historical significance in Australia and New Zealand. At the time of one of these dives (2002) the 180 m depth represented the deepest wreck dive ever undertaken. He was elected to Fellowship of the Explorers' Club of New York in 2006, and was the DAN Rolex Diver of the Year in 2015. Ref: www.dhmjournal.com. (n.d.). DHM, Simon Mitchell. Most cars today are “connected cars.” That means that automakers and vendors can send and receive information directly with your car. Sounds like a great thing. But this episode begins with an explanation on how it can also cause trouble for drivers as well as cost them more money. Source: Automotive journalist Peter Bohr writing in Westways magazine (AAA) Summer 2023 issue. Listen and you will hear some things about your blood and how to take care of it that you have likely never heard before. For example, that your blood is an organ; that you should avoid getting a transfusion if at all possible; that there are things you should be doing to test and maintain your blood and much more. All of this comes to you from my guest Aryeh Shander. M.D. Dr Shander is Emeritus Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, Pain Management and Hyperbaric Medicine at Englewood Hospital & Medical Center in Englewood, NJ and is one of the authors of the book Blood Works: An Owner's Guide: What Every Person Needs to Know Before They Are a Patient (https://amzn.to/3AP5bKW). You often hear people say they are “burned out" but what does that mean? Is it just something people say because they are tired or exhausted or is burnout a real, identifiable thing? According to my guest it is very much a real thing that is getting worse and worse and the fallout is devastating. Joining me to explain this is Jennifer Moss. She is an award-winning journalist, speaker and author of the book The Burnout Epidemic, (https://amzn.to/3Nx7Dx9) Since Covid, most of us are more careful about germs around us and on surfaces. Still there are some surfaces that have the potential to spread illness if you touch them because so many other people touch them too. I'll never forget back in medical school that we were told that the brain was "terminally differentiated.” This means that brain cells were what they were, and could never be regenerated. As such, when a person had a stroke or brain injury, that was pretty much the end. There would be no improvement. That understanding stands in stark contrast to what we have observed. Clearly, stroke patient can and do improve. And, it turns out, that this improvement can be enhanced with a type of therapy that applies pure oxygen under pressure to the patient. This increased oxygen in the brain does some wonderful things including, importantly, enhancing the growth of new brain cells. What a concept. I have a long experience with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, having founded one of the countries largest hyperbaric centers. Much of the data upon which we relied came from researchers in Israel who were and continue to do cutting edge science demonstrating the profound effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy as it relates to stroke recovery. Nowadays, improvements in brain functionality can actually be visualized with state of the art brain imaging equipment. Today, on the Empowering Neurologist, I have the great honor of interviewing Dr. Shai Efrati, one of the global leaders in the application of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for the treatment of stroke. Dr. Efrati is Founder and Director of the world-leading Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research at Shamir Medical Center, where he also serves as Director of Research and Development and Head of Nephrology. Dr. Efrati's research focuses on novel aspects of hyperbaric medicine and brain rehabilitation. He is a professor at the Sackler School of Medicine and the Sagol School of Neuroscience in Tel Aviv University. Since 2008, he has served as Chairman of the Israeli Society for Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine. Importantly, Dr. Efrati is now associated with the Aviv Clinic, which is not only offering hyperbaric oxygen therapy, but a far more comprehensive approach for stroke recovery And fortunately, the clinic is located in the Villages, just outside of Orlando Florida. Please enjoy this fascinating deep dive into the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, especially as it relates to stroke recovery.   TIMESTAMPS: 0:00 Intro 1:21 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy 10:13 How Oxygen Therapy Works 14:37 Brain Cell Regeneration 16:43 Stroke Treatment 22:34 Scaling This Treatment 25:36 The Aviv Clinic 29:14 Vascular Dementia 35:43 Autism 40:39 Consult A Professional 42:33 Conclusion ___________________________ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidperlmutter/ Website: https://www.drperlmutter.com/ Subscribe to our channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDRl_UAXxbHyOOjklnA0dxQ/?sub_confirmation=1See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Oxygen is crucial to healing — but it has to be able to reach the damaged tissue to help the body recover and fight off infection. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can facilitate that process by dramatically boosting the amount of oxygen your blood cells deliver to an injury. You may have heard about the therapy's use in treating scuba diving incidents or carbon monoxide poisoning, but it can also speed healing from crush injuries, chronic wounds related to diabetes, radiation damage from cancer treatment and a host of other conditions. In part 1 of this two-part episode, two world-renowned experts in the field explain the history of this powerful treatment, how it works and what to expect during a session in the "727 airplane-sized" hyperbaric oxygen chamber at Phelps Hospital, who qualifies and the research driving it forward.  Podcast transcript Meet the guests Owen J. On today's podcast episode, I had a chance to speak with Shai Efrati, a physician and professor in the schools of medicine and neuroscience at Tel Aviv University. Efrati also directs the Sagol Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Research, and our conversation in this episode focuses on the potential health benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.Efrati's studies point to a connection between the use of hyperbaric chambers and improvements for a range of health problems such as Long Covid, strokes and traumatic brain injuries. Plus, Efrati has an early line of research suggesting that hyperbaric oxygen therapy could help protect against cognitive decline in healthy people and perhaps even slow down the overall aging process. We talk about what's going in on the body during hyperbaric oxygen therapy that could possibly lead to transformative benefits for patients, some of whom had searched for treatments previously and come up empty. We also discuss exactly where Efrati is with this line of inquiry, both what his studies have shown and the great deal of additional research that's needed before the healthcare system can and should fully embrace hyperbaric oxygen therapy.Efrati and I talk about why you can't just go on Amazon and buy something that says hyperbaric – the only way it can have a positive effect is if you access the real version of the chamber and use it correctly under the supervision of a knowledgeable physician.I also ask Efrati what we know about the short- and long-term risks for those who follow the research-based protocol on a regular basis. And what about accessibility to people without a lot of extra cash to spend on their health? Efrati is already rolling out this therapy at a small number of specialized clinics in places like the Villages retirement community in Florida.

The world of emergency medicine is commonly known for its 2 AM chest pain visits, motor vehicle accidents and trauma admissions, and foreign objects that require removal from different orifices. However, there is actually so much more specialization within this specialty in itself! Through additional training from 1 to 2 years of fellowship, one can sub-specialize in realms that expand even beyond the four corners of the emergency room, such as Critical Care, EMS/Disaster, Wilderness Medicine, Pediatrics, Hyperbaric Medicine, Medical Toxicology, and even Ultrasound! The last is true for our episode guest today, Dr. Siri ("Hey Siri MD") Chamarti, an Emergency Medicine physician who is near-ending her Ultrasound fellowship!Receiving her bachelor's degree in Neuroscience from UCLA in 2013, attaining her medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia at August University in 2017, and having completed her emergency medicine residency at Maimonides Hospital in 2020, Dr. Siri now stands as a New York doctor who promotes evidenced-based education on her social media space by recalling her gruesome experiences as the first line of defense during the spike of the pandemic during the City's epicenter during Spring 2020.From her advice for pre-medical to juggling enjoyment with medical school to moving across the country to pursue medicine to finally becoming an attending doctor now teaching the next generation of physicians and to her love for good food and traveling, Dr. Siri is a testament to how much of life can truly be a fun adventure even as a doctor. Just as she stresses the importance of mastering anatomy to excel in ultrasound medicine, Dr. Siri also stresses the importance of mastering the discovery of what makes you happy and excited to live life. What...makes you happy?"Livestream Air Date: August 12, 2021Dr. Sirivalli Chamarti: IG @heysirimdFriends of Franz: IG @friendsoffranzpodChristian Franz (Host): IG @chrsfranz & YT Christian Franz
