In a missing persons investigation, the initial hours and days are crucial. Establishing a relationship with the missing person's family, absorbing their behavioural characteristics, and managing media interest in the story are all essential parts of the toolkit for officers charged with finding them alive. But, 27 years ago, when Charlie Hedges MBE was assigned his first missing persons case, such protocols did not exist. He found institutional inertia and complacency where there should have been dedication and service - and set out to right that wrong. In this compelling conversation with Olly, Charlie looks back over his career finding missing people - including Dr David Kelly, April Jones and Ashya King - and reveals the techniques and temperament necessary for the job, especially in these days of internet sleuths and social media speculation. Charlie's book, Missing, is out now, published by Hachette. _______ Meanwhile, in The Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart channels his inner James Martin to kick up a storm in Olly's kitchen: specifically, a five-course meal made entirely using air fryers. With the help of AirFryerGirl and ProCook, Ollie impresses with a delicious molten Camembert and honey-mustard pork - but is frankly rather let down by his raw carrot crisps. Along the way, the boys consider whether the popularity of air fryers will last beyond the cost of living crisis, uncover which tabletop gadgets will become the next kitchen must-haves, and ask why Tiktokers don't provide recipe PDFs… _______ Elsewhere, down the Foxhole, Alix Fox uncovers the trend for ‘CEI' humiliation videos, and assists a Mann-fan whose daughter wants to reject the HPV vaccine - because she's a lesbian. In collaboration with gynaecological cancer charity The Eve Appeal, Alix discovers why the HPV vaccine is important for all young people, regardless of orientation; explains how the virus can be transmitted; and reveals the efficacy of the vaccine and the common myths surrounding it. _______ Finally, we're going hip-hop for our Record of the Month, ‘Passion', from LL COOL J's first album in 11 years, THE FORCE

Ukraine claims it has identified 20,000 children who it alleges have been abducted by Russia since the start of the war. Arrest warrants have been issued to President Putin and his Commissioner for Children's Rights. It's the subject of the latest work from film maker Shahida Tulaganova, whose documentary Ukraine's Stolen Children airs on ITV tonight. Now you may have heard of German composer Felix Mendelssohn but what about his sister, Fanny? A composer in her own right, Fanny was long ignored by the classical music world in favour of her brother. And despite being forbidden a musical career, Fanny persevered and composed 450 works. A new documentary, Fanny The Other Mendelssohn, explores her life and features never-before-heard or recorded pieces by her. Its director, BAFTA winner Sheila Hayman is also Fanny's 3x great granddaughter and she joins Emma to discuss it. An extra course of chemotherapy could cut the risk of death from cervical cancer by up to two fifths, according to a new study by scientists. The drugs used are already licensed for use in the UK so those involved say it should be straightforward to roll out because the treatment is 'cheap and accessible'. GP Dr Phillipa Kaye who is also an ambassador for Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust and Comedian, Ambassador for Eve Appeal and cervical cancer survivor Karen Hobbs both join Emma Barnett to discuss it. Designer Sarah Burton has stepped down as Creative Director of the fashion brand Alexander McQueen, meaning that there are now only a tiny number of women designing clothes for the rest of us. So why are there so few female designers at the top fashion houses? And does it actually make a difference when the clothes women wear are designed by men? Presenter: Emma Barnett Producer: Emma Pearce

Gynecological cancer is one of the leading causes of death in women. In the US, 100,000 cases are reported yearly, and 33,000 die from gynecological cancer annually. The numbers are significantly lower in the UK, but it is still a cause for concern. One of the major factors in the increasing number of cases is the lack of awareness and the stigma surrounding gynecological issues. So many of us don't even know what to ask our doctors. Plus, many women do not wish to undergo the often invasive screening procedure. Many are unaware that there are five types of gynecological cancer they can be susceptible to. So how can women get information and protect themselves? Welcome to the Scarlet Society podcast. In this episode, Stacey Lindsay speaks with Athena Lamnisos of The Eve Appeal, a leading cancer charity funding research and raising awareness of early diagnosis and prevention of gynecological cancers. Getting earlier detection right will have the most significant impact in terms of saving women's lives. Now is your chance to discover the truth about gynecological cancer and what you can do to better care for your body. “If you have a cervix, you need to be screened.” - Athena Lamnisos In This Episode: 00:00 Introduction from today's host, Stacey Lindsay 01:59 The mission and the work being done by Athena Lamnisos and her organization 06:43 What's the reason behind people's lack of awareness about the threat of gynecological cancer? 08:33 The five types of gynecological cancer, the risk factors, and the real reason women don't go on regular screening 12:43 The importance of being comfortable talking about our bodies 15:59 What should we ask our doctors, and what body changes must we pay attention to? 18:25 Have you been vaccinated against this pretty evil little virus called HPV? 24:15 How can we minimize the shame around getting examined for possible gynecological issues? 30:00 A powerful message for nonbinary individuals, trans men, and women over 40 (and just about anyone with female reproductive organs) 33:59 Support the work that Athena is doing through The Eve Appeal Resources: - https://eveappeal.org.uk/gynaecological-cancers/ (The Five Gynecological Cancers: A Brief Explainer) - https://eveappeal.org.uk/gynaecological-cancers/training-resources-for-gp-and-community-nurses/ (Training Resources for GP and Community Nurses) Connect with Athena Lamnisos and The Eve Appeal: - https://eveappeal.org.uk/ (Website) - https://www.instagram.com/eveappeal/ (Instagram) - https://web.facebook.com/eveappeal/ (Facebook) - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNpe_IXpfvH3OqZCvA9imnQ (YouTube) Connect with Jade & Scarlet Society: -https://www.instagram.com/scarletsociety_official/ ( Instagram) -https://scarletsociety.com/ ( Website) -https://web.facebook.com/ScarletSocietyOfficial ( Facebook)
The number of women and people with gynae organs raising ‘red flag' gynaecological concerns with their GP has reduced by almost a fifth since before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to new data1. Each year, more than 22,000 people are diagnosed with one of the five gynaecological cancers – womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval, and vaginal – with 12 dying from these conditions each day2. LPD electronic medical record data shows an 18% decrease in patients reporting abnormal gynaecological bleeding since before the COVID-19 pandemic1. This trend is also seen with patients reporting pain, lumps, or irritation (including on the vulva, vagina and labia), with a 12% decrease in patients reporting these symptoms since before the pandemic1. That's why GSK, in partnership with The Eve Appeal, is launching ‘Be Gynae Aware' – a new campaign to raise awareness of gynaecological health to help people understand what is normal for them, and to feel confident visiting their doctor for advice if they have any concerns. Furthermore, as research shows one in four have not felt listened to in a gynae health appointment3, two discussion guides have been created – one for patients and one for healthcare professionals. General Practitioner, Dr Hilary Jones MBE, believes no topic should be off-limits, regardless of the gender of the GP you are speaking to. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Off-label antibiotics ordered from Hong Kong, bacteriophages cultivated in Georgia, bladder fulguration undergone in Turkey - these are some of the lengths countless women are resorting to in desperate bids to rid themselves of chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs).In March, the NHS finally recognised the existence of chronic UTI, a debilitating condition affecting 1.7 million people - mostly women - in the UK. But months later, our exclusive research reveals sufferers are spending up to hundreds of thousands of pounds treating themselves, while NHS healthcare guidelines fail to mention the condition at all. This week, Media Storm dives deep into underfunding, lack of research, misdiagnosing and medical gaslighting impacting healthcare for women and minority groups. We're joined in the studio by Athena Lamnisos, CEO of The Eve Appeal, and Dr Christine Ekechi, obstetrician & gynaecologist, to discuss the roots of this “gender health gap”, the intersections within it, and the role of the mainstream media in reforming - or reinforcing - the status quo.The episode is hosted by Mathilda Mallinson (@mathildamall) and Helena Wadia (@helenawadia).Guests:Athena Lamnisos @eveappeal @athenalamnisos1Dr Chirstine Ekechi @DrEkechi (T) @dr_christine_ekechi (IG)Sources:Chronic UTI UK statistics: https://cutic.co.uk/what-is-chronic-uti/Outdated urine testing: https://bit.ly/3ybEvn6 Endometriosis diagnoses (UK): pslhub.org/learn/patient-safety-in-health-and-care/womens-health/appg-on-endometriosis-inquiry-report-2020-endometriosis-in-the-uk-time-for-change-october-2020-r3279/#:~:text=Summary,care%20at%20the%20right%20time. The former presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton has a new book out, “State of Terror”, a political thriller written with the award winning author Louise Penny. The two women were already friends before deciding to pen the novel which features a President who “smells of meat” and appears to resemble Donald Trump and a British Prime Minister who's “a twit” and seems to have a more than a passing resemblance to Boris Johnson. Anita Rani talks to the duo about their collaboration and some of the uncanny parallels between “State of Terror” and global politics today. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common virus – Cancer Research UK estimates around 8 out of 10 people will be infected at some point in their lives. HPV spreads through sexual activity. In most people, it doesn't cause any problems and goes away on its own, but HPV can increase a woman's chance of developing cervical cancer. Gynaecological charity The Eve Appeal have found a ‘worrying' trend in HPV kits being sold online by private companies, advertised alongside misleading information. Tracie Miles is a gynaecologist cancer specialist nurse at The Eve Appeal. Mercedes Gleeson is someone who has been open about her own experience with HPV. Anita is joined by two guests who are trying to encourage women to get outside and go on adventures. Army Officer Preet Chandi is preparing for a solo, unsupported trek across Antarctica to the South Pole in November. She will be the first Asian woman to do this. Dr Geeta Ludhra set up a walking group in the Chilterns to encourage women from diverse backgrounds to get out on smaller scale adventures in the UK to connect with nature and feel the health benefits. I don't know how to sum this episode up apart from to say that Cherry and I had so much fun recording it and we covered all sorts of topics from vulvas to manifestation to past relationships. It really was just the most brilliant catch up and I feel like we put the world to rights and I left feeling all empowered and excited.Cherry is an ambassador for the brilliant charity The Eve Appeal and I just wanted to say that the work they do is incredible. They raise awareness of and research the 5 types of gynaecological cancer. They also offer 24/7 support with specialist nurses on their phoneline. As March is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we thought it fitting to have a big ol' chat about the big (gynaecological) C! In this episode, Comedian / Writer / Cat Mother and all round LEGEND Karen Hobbs was kind enough to talk us through her experience of cervical cancer at the age of just 24. As Information Officer to the UK's leading gynae cancer charity Eve Appeal, our non-Karen Karen also fills us in on all the things we, as female reproductive organ owners, should be keeping an eye on! We are absolutely 200% (100 each) definitely really not medical professionals and this podcast does not intend to daunt or dishearten anyone! Our aim, as always, is to ask the questions we hope you want the answers to, to normalise talking about our bits (including the more serious stuff), all while having a little laugh or twelve along the way. Oh, and GO FOR YOUR SMEAR! For more gynae cancer information and support head over to eveappeal.org.uk. For Monopod updates or just to say hello, you can find us on instagram @thevaginamonoblogs and for more glorious Karen content head over to @karen_hobbs! Thank you so much for listening!!!!
Annabelle Bond, OBE, earned the title "fastest woman climber in the world" in 2005 after scaling the highest peaks on the seven continents in just 360 days. At the end of 2003, she began intensive training with a Chilean team 6 months prior to going to Everest. She reached the summit of Mount Everest on May 15th 2004, the fourth British woman to stand on top of the world. After climbing Mount Everest, Annabelle went on to climb the other six mountains that comprise the Seven Summits, making her the only woman in the world to have achieved that extraordinary physical and logistical feat in less than a year. Her record stood for eight years before being broken. In April 2006, Annabelle joined SAS Prince Albert II of Monaco on an expedition to the North Pole. Using teams of dogs, the seven-person expedition reached the North Pole on April 16th. The expedition was conducted in conjunction with a project for the World Wildlife Fund that sought to highlight awareness of global warming. In August 2007, with the birth of her daughter Isabella, Annabelle became a single mother. She has since devoted her time and energy to being the best mum she can be, whilst still staying fit and engaged in endurance events and various business and philanthropic activities. In May 2009, Annabelle ran a 250-kilometer self-supported endurance race across the desert of Namibia as part of the Racing the Planet Series of Races. In October 2009, Annabelle ran the same distance across the Sahara Desert to raise funds and to highlight awareness for the Eve Appeal, which focuses on the prevention of Ovarian Cancer. In 2016 Annabelle raced in her first triathlon in Phuket, Thailand, winning her age group - the triathlon is just short of a half Iron Man, but the humidity, heat, and hills make it one of the toughest triathlons on the globe. Annabelle speaks regularly to corporations, schools, and charity groups on the importance of Setting and Achieving Goals. She works as well as an Advisor to Arbor Ventures, an all-woman venture capital fund. She remains passionate about health and nutrition. Annabelle has been awarded the position of honorary Colonel of the Chilean Army, and she was made a member of the Royal Council of Ingxotha by his Majesty King Zwelithini Goodwill KaBhekuzulu of KwaZulu. In addition, Annabelle has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen of England for her services to Mountaineering and Charity. Athena Lamnisos is the Chief Executive of the Eve Appeal which the only UK national charity raising awareness and funding research into the five gynaecological cancers – womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal. In this episode Dr Louise Newson and Athena talk about the importance of diagnosing these cancers early which leads to better outcomes for women. Many women are ignoring signs of potential cancer such as vaginal bleeding due to fear or denial which needs to change. Athena talks about ways the charity is working to improve early detection of cancers and also with the research they are involved in and the discussion also includes managing menopause in women who have had treatment for their cancer and how important it is for them to receive the right treatment and advice. Athena's Three Take Home Tips for Understanding your Gynae Health: You need to know your menstrual health and cycle and know what's normal for you. If you no longer have periods, you need to know when your last one was. We need to break down the stigma and taboo around gynaecological health. Learn and use the correct terminology for your body parts so you can describe any symptoms properly. Know your body! Have a look at your vulva and know what is normal for you. This will help so much should you have to explain anything to a medical professional. https://eveappeal.org.uk/
Dr Newson talks with Meg Mathews & Athena Lamnisos, CEO of charity Eve Appeal, about best times to discuss menopause with women & children. Menopause being on the curriculum has had a mixed response, but as it can cause many different symptoms, which can go unrecognised for years, it’s essential we start the conversation early so children can recognise potential symptoms in themselves & others & become aware of the health risks of the menopause & optimise health. In this episode Lala is joined by @karen_hobbs from @eveappeal Gynae Cancer Charity for a chat about gynae cancers, cervical screening (smear tests), sex, vaginas, and vulvas as well as answering questions sent in by followers including: If you have had abnormal cells removed does it just prolong getting cervical cancer or do your chances go back to that of someone without HPV? What is the process of the smear? What can you do if you find vaginal examinations traumatic? What is HPV? My smear test is due next year but I will be living in Abu Dhabi. I have previously had abnormal cells but I don’t know the system over there or whether I trust it completely. Can I get an early test in the UK for this reason? Can you please talk about pages that promote Yoni detox for purging the vagina? Do they work? Do we need to cleanse internally? Can your inner lips stretch over time, for example if you pull them to shave or dry yourself? Is there really a way to tighten the vagina – do exercises really work? My cousin has had vulva cancer 3 times, what are the chances of me getting it? My clit is really small and hidden/buried so I find it really hard to have a clitoral orgasm. Any advice? Does porn give us an unrealistic view of vulvas?
Our lives are getting increasingly stressful and the overwhelm is real, so how do we carve out time for self-love and what does it look like? For this special live episode, recorded at White City House, we explore self-love in all its forms. Co-hosts Lisa Williams and Anniki Sommerville haven't had much time for self-love recently, hear about their paltry efforts. Dr Karen Gurney answers the question, ‘If you don't love yourself, can you love anyone else?', Nadia Deem advocates masturbation as self-love and offers up some tips, Deborah James (AKA Bowel Babe) talks about why it's important to her to stay glam during treatment for cancer, and Kath from Mooncup (which sponsored the 3rd series of the Hotbed) reveals how businesses can encourage their employees to look after themselves. Headlining the evening is comedian Karen Hobbs, who somehow finds lols in her experience of cervical cancer. A charity in the United Kingdom is calling on the government to include cancer awareness in the school curriculum. The Eve Appeal, a charity committed to informing the public about cancer symptoms in women, launched the “Put Cancer on the Curriculum” campaign. This campaign aims to enhance students' understanding of cancer through the addition of new subjects in the curriculum. The campaign is a result of a survey commissioned by the charity. According to the survey's findings, two-thirds of 1,000 parents want their children, as young as 10 or 11 years old, to be educated on the signs and symptoms of cancer. The Eve Appeal CEO Athena Lamnisos said that the charity wants to see cancer-related subjects in the curriculum because they put a premium on the prevention and early detection of cancer. Lamnisos emphasized that The Eve Appeal wants to help students to be more knowledgeable and be less embarrassed to talk about sensitive issues like cancer. In addition, The Eve Appeal wants students to know more about the available vaccines for viruses, like the cancer-causing human papillomavirus, and about National Health Service (NHS) screening tests. These tests help in determining if someone has a higher risk of contracting a disease. Several people have expressed their support for the campaign. NHS doctor Bella Smith believes that cancer awareness will make it easier for children to spot abnormalities, especially for body parts that most people are embarrassed to talk about. Similarly, Deborah James, a previous deputy head teacher and a cancer patient, feels that her cancer may have been prevented if cancer-related subjects were part of her school's curriculum back then.

"It's bad enough going for your own smear test, let alone someone else's!" said a friend of mine when I told her I'd been invited to record a smear test for this podcast. t’s not currently possible to find a complete dataset on all charitable grants in the UK. 360Giving exists to change this. Its vision is that UK grantmaking is more informed, effective and strategic. 360Giving supports organisations to publish their grants data in an open, standardised way and helps people to understand and use the data in order to support decision-making and learning across the charitable giving sector. They’ve developed an open data standard as part of their work – the 360Giving Standard – and already some of the largest UK grantmakers are using it to share information about thousands of grants worth billions of pounds. 360Giving is also supporting the development of tools and platforms that allow easy access and use of the data, including Beehive Giving and GrantNav. As the dataset grows, they’re starting to test its usefulness via a series of data use pilots, starting in Manchester. This lunchtime lecture will focus on 360’s progress so far, including challenges and lessons learned. The 360Giving team is also interested to hear from ODI staff about implementing behaviour change within organisations based on better access to information and open data. About the speakers Rachel Rank is Chief Executive of 360Giving. She was formerly Deputy Director of Publish What You Fund, where she led its research and monitoring work. She has written widely on transparency, good governance and accountability, and held positions with the Commonwealth Secretariat, the UK Department for International Development, DAI, Transparency International and the Overseas Development Institute. Katherine Duerden leads 360Giving’s outreach and engagement with grantmakers, supporting them to publish their grants data openly, and building partnerships to support more informed and strategic grantmaking. She was formerly Membership Relationship Manager for the Association of Charitable Foundations, where she was responsible for the recruitment and retention of foundations in membership, answering queries and overseeing the use and development of the CRM database. Katherine has previously held positions with the Eve Appeal, a cancer research fundraising charity and carers support organisation in Lambeth.
