See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Since our last show, the US election happened and Cop29 kicked off, with a whole lot of other news in between. In the US, the recriminations and post-election analysis consumes our feeds, while Cop29 starts with the US threatening to leave the Paris Climate Agreement (again), Argentina ordering its representatives to leave after three days, all while reports state fossil fuel emissions have hit new highs, devastating storms continue across the world, and the cost of food continues to rise as extreme weather events destroy essential crops everywhere. To add to that, global media have been called out for reporting stories that are completely different to what people are seeing with their own eyes. How can we trust the media? So where do we go from here? What will be the global fall-out from the US election? Which country will move to the far right next? Germany is on the line here! But trust is another massive crisis we've faced for decades, and the media seems intent on making it worse – so where do we go for the truth? Or has our information system become so corrupted it's not even possible anymore? And while all this chaos escalates across our societies, scientists are continually issuing red alerts on the planetary risks – a growing food crisis, destruction from extreme weather events, ecosystems collapsing, ocean heat and its impacts, the earth's energy imbalance and on it goes. Does it feel like we're heading in the right direction? To join us this week, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Damini Chawla, an award-winning professional speaker with a unique multi-cultural background and personal story fuelled by courage. We are firmly in the 80s now as Meenakshi Seshadri is our first 80s superstar. A beautiful, talented actress and dancer, she doesn't get talked about as much as she should - and we are a bit puzzled as to why. Are you a Meenakshi fan and do you consider her a superstar? Which of her films or performances do you enjoy? Films discussed: Ghayal, Ghar Ho To Aisa, Swati, and Dilwaala. We have both seen and love Damini but completely forgot to cover it; obviously she is amazing in it and it is essential to her legacy! (PS Beth realizes she said "I have heard so much about Meenakshi over the years" AND "I must not have heard that many people talking about her," and obviously those cannot both be true. She meant that she has heard the name frequently but not much in-depth discussion.) .

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

At Amnesty Tech, a division of human rights organization Amnesty International, Damini Satija and Matt Mahmoudi leverage their expertise in technology and public policy to examine the use of AI in the public sector and its impact on citizens worldwide. In Part 1 of Matt and Damini's conversation with Sam and Shervin, they described scenarios in which AI tools can put human rights at risk and how their work is helping to expose those risks and protect people from the technology's misuse. In this episode, they resume their conversation and dig deeper into the ways AI regulations can limit the negative use of AI at scale. Matt and Damini also caution us about what a dystopian future might hold and point to specific ways leaders in the corporate world can help limit the harms of AI. Read this episode's transcript here. Dami asks Damini if he could be friends with someone exactly like him (14:50) and making friends as an adult (18:00). Dilemma time: If you gave your partner money and told them not to pay you back, are you allowed to take that money (forcefully) in the future if they did something you didn't like? (20:40). Which prompted Damini to tell us why he could never borrow money from his girlfriend (31:10).They speak about icky things happening in the world of Spanish football (46:20). Amnesty International brings together more than 10 million staff members and volunteers worldwide to advocate for social justice. Damini Satija and Matt Mahmoudi work with Amnesty Tech, a division of the human rights organization that focuses on the role of government, Big Tech, and technologies like artificial intelligence in areas like surveillance, discrimination, and bias. On this episode, Matt and Damini join Sam and Shervin to highlight scenarios in which AI tools can put human rights at risk, such as when governments and public-sector agencies use facial recognition systems to track social activists or algorithms to make automated decisions about public housing access and child welfare. Damini and Matt caution that AI technology cannot fix human problems like bias, discrimination, and inequality; that will take human intervention and changes to public policy. Read the episode transcript here. They also discuss the ethical implications of giving someone money when they know it would be used for something negative (26:00) and speak about how it can be hard to come across as an expert in one area when you want to explore different fields (33:00). Strange things were witnessed in the deepest parts of the Nottingham forest in England. A group of children looking for a bit of mischief one September 1970's night saw something that they would never forget. Something that still fascinates. Still intrugues, and still frightens. It hearkens back to a lot of the more ancient stories from the area. Stories of little creatures. Little magic beings. Does this happening lend some credence to fairy tales of old? ----------------- This episode is brought to you by None of this is Real! None Of This Is Real is a comedy podcast about all things mysterious and weird. It's hosted by two friends; one, a believer and the other, a skeptic who decided to record their front porch swing conversations for posterity. Since launching the podcast in October of 2018, Sarah and Damini have covered strange cryptids, wild conspiracies, haunted places, folklore, cult leaders, urban legends, and so much more.
