In the previous episode I shared “What My Dad's Pending Death Can Teach Us About Living.” (visit his tribute page https://murial.life/dan-miller) Today I highlight a message my mom feels burdened with during this acute time of life. Death gets us serious about what is really important, and this is a message she wants to communicate to everyone, and it's a message I feel is worthy of communicating. More than worthy. I believe it's the key, literally, to how you can most tangibly change the world and impact it for the better. My mom is Joanne Miller. She prides herself most on being Mom to myself, my brother Jared, and sister Ashley. And then grandmother to her 16 grandkids and 4, soon to be 5, great grandkids. She is well known as wife and partner to my Dad, Dan Miller, of 48 Days To The Work & Life You Love fame. She is also mother figure and friend to countless people. Those roles are top of the list. Further down, yet quite impressive, she is author of two books, Be Your Finest Art and Creating A Haven Of Peace. She has co-produced a lot of material with my Dad at 48days.com, like the Living, Loving & Working audio that any entrepreneurial couple should hear. And she is an accomplished artists who has participated in many galleries and has a lot of paid-for paintings hanging on people's walls. Including mine, though she didn't make me pay. She is a tremendous human who I cherish deeply. Parenting is a treacherous journey – don't we all know this to be true! But the beautiful thing is, we don't have to do it alone. We shouldn't do it alone. Today I talk with Heather MacFadyen, the founder of a brand and podcast called Don't Mom Alone, about the idea of community. It can be awkward to seek out and pray specifically for, but we'll be better parents if we find like-minded people to walk through this with. And Heather says that of course, parents matter, but we're not the end-all, be-all, and that's both hard and incredibly freeing to realize. Don't mom – parent, grandparent, aunt/uncle, etc. – alone, okay? “Peaceful” and “parenting” aren't words we usually put together. Think about the parenting moments that stick out to you from the last week – was there anything peaceful about them? What if there could be? What would it change for you if parenting didn't feel like moving from one fight to another? My guests this week, Dr David and Amanda Erickson of Flourishing Homes and Families, encourage us that it IS possible. Peace and grace can be meaningful parts of your parenting – not only for your kids, but for you. The gospel always brings freedom. Gentle Christ-Centered Parenting will not only change the dynamic of your house, but it will set your kids up for success in the hardest parts of life – responding with grace when someone hurts them, learning to hold boundaries and communicate their needs in a way that still respects the dignity and honor of the person who hurts them or crosses those boundaries and how to collaboratively problem solve. Ultimately, there is no better place for them to see reliance on the Holy Spirit's work in life than through us fighting against sin by his power in our own lives. David and Amanda have fostered children and are raising two biological kids. They too have had to work against the patterns of their own childhoods to transform their parenting.  Connect with David and Amanda Erickson:  Website:  https://flourishinghomesandfamilies.com/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/flourishinghomesandfamilies  Instagram:  @flourishinghomesandfamilies TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@flourishinghomesfamilies  Links Mentioned:   Instagram Stories on “the rod” verses  Good and Angry: Exchanging Frustration for Character in You and Your Kids! This is a very common question. And I don't think it's as complicated as we sometimes feel it is. There are some simple principles that will give you insight and clarity. In this episode I lay out four basic principles to remove "the kink in your hose" that may be preventing you from hearing God's will. Questions: 1. How do you know if something is a million-dollar idea? If you get multiple ideas every week, how do you choose? 2. I feel like there is something specific for me to do but because it's not clear I cannot move forward. 3. I am a young 66 year old female. I lost my job 16 months ago and can't get another job. 4. I'm stuck in a job that's not for me any longer and don't know where God wants me to go next. Americans who believe in the QAnon conspiracies are expecting Donald Trump to be reinaugurated on March 4th, following the collapse of the conspiracy that Trump had arrested Joe Biden prior to January 20th. Why do these beliefs persist? And how do you interact with loved ones who go down this path? A team of researchers has been working on a framework for understanding Q and conspiracy beliefs in general. They've identified some common aspects that tend to foment this type of thinking. The explosive philosophical debate pitting social justice vs. social distance continues to rage on, and Alan and Kerri Kasem jumped into the fray with an exclusive interview with world-renowned bioethicist, and New York University professor, Art Caplan. The table was set to talk about hotbed issues such as whether protestors should waive their rights to medical treatment should they contract COVID-19, as they willingly marched in public risking exposure to coronavirus, to what duties, if any, individuals have to make concerted efforts to not spread the virus to others, especially to those who might be physically compromised, to whether there ought to be limitations on free speech for anti-vaxxers, or others whose positions may lead to harmful public consequences.  And, that is just scratching the ethical surface of the Gurvey's Law discussion! Then, the program shifts gears into the direction of conspiracy theorists and psychology. Joining the discussion was University of Delaware professor Joanne Miller, to talk about why conspiracy theories and those prescribing to the theories have become so popular in the COVID-19 era. Professor Miller explained her research on the issue and the psychology behind it all, as Professor Caplan weighed in on the ethical undertones. Você Já Ouviu Falar do MOPS? Recursos Mencionados A Carol citou o livro: "Parenting is Heart Work" dos autores Dr. Scott Turansky e Joanne Miller. Ela indicou os seguintes podcasts: Glocal (em especial os episódios das mulheres); MOPS Podcast (esse é em inglês); Para seguir a Carol no instagram, encontre ela no @carolinafedoruk. Today’s episode will be all about ladies of leadership, and their influence and impact on my life. I can’t wait to hear about the women who have impacted your life, too! Let me know all about them by scrolling down at this link. The first woman I want to talk about is my incredible mom. She’s my best friend, my hero, and an absolutely phenomenal leader in every single way. When I think of a leading lady or an extraordinary woman who knows how to overcome obstacles and heartache, I think of my mom. She’s the reason that I’m the woman who I am today. Next up is my best friend Kim. She’s been there for me ever since I can remember, encouraging me and telling the truth. I’ll never forget the moment that I walked out of the hospital doors as my mom was being wheeled into surgery for her cancer, and unexpectedly saw Kim waiting there for me with open arms. Barbara McCoo-Lewis is another amazing woman who I’ve been blessed to have in my life. She has done so much not only for me, but also for women all over the country. Speaking of amazing leading ladies, I can’t possibly leave First Lady Mae Lawrence Blake off the list! She’s a classy, phenomenal woman and a true leading lady. I’d also like to take a moment to honor the kind, loving, real, genuine, open, wonderful Joanne Miller. She’s an artist, painter, mother, coach, and leader, as well as the author of the book Creating a Haven of Peace. My big sister has always listened to me and been there for me. She’s the big sister who every baby sister would want. But keep in mind that the leading ladies who have impacted your life don’t need to be women you’ve met. Michelle Obama is absolutely one of the ladies who have impacted me, but I haven’t yet had the honor of meeting her. I can’t wait to hear about your own leading ladies, so please don’t forget to submit a comment!   In This Episode: [00:49] - Jevonnah introduces the topic of today’s episode, and encourages listeners to be confident in their ability to impact others’ lives. [02:26] - Today’s listener shoutout goes to my friend Jeff Long, who helps entrepreneurs build their courses at Online Course Coach! For a chance of getting your own shoutout on a future episode, leave a rating and review on iTunes. [04:05] - Jevonnah shares a question she received from a listener about the Thrive! group on Facebook a couple weeks ago, and offers an answer. [05:45] - Today’s episode is a way of saying “thank you” to some amazing ladies who have impacted Jevonnah’s life in a major way. [06:12] - The first woman who has impacted Jevonnah’s life is her mom. [06:57] - Jevonnah’s best friend Kim is another incredible woman. [07:58] - Next up on Jevonnah’s list is Barbara McCoo-Lewis. [09:35] - We hear about Jevonnah’s next lady of leadership, First Lady Mae Lawrence Blake. [10:32] - Joanne Miller, wife of Dan Miller of 48 Days, is another of Jevonnah’s ladies! [11:47] - Jevonnah’s big sister absolutely belongs on the list too. [12:32] - While Jevonnah hasn’t (yet!) met her in person, Michelle Obama is also on her list. [13:24] - Jevonnah invites listeners to take a look back at the leading ladies who have helped them to reach the place where they are today. Be sure to let Jevonnah know about your own leading ladies by submitting a comment at this link! [14:04] - We hear a letter to the world that Jevonnah hopes will inspire you to go become a leading lady to someone else. In elections with three or more candidates, spoiler effects are thought to occur when one candidate, one with supporters who are ideologically similar to those of another candidate, garners enough support that a third, ideologically dissimilar or even opposite, candidate can win without a majority. For example, in the 2014 Maine gubernatorial general election, Democratic nominee Mike Michaud received 43.4% of the vote, while independent candidate Eliot Cutler received 8.4%. Because Cutler's issue positions (e.g., pro-choice, supportive of marriage equality, pro-union) aligned him more closely with Democrats than the Republican opponent, many have suggested that Cutler's participation in the election drew enough support away from Michaud to prevent what otherwise would have been a Democratic victory. As it was, Republican Paul LePage was elected with 48.2% of the vote, less than a true majority. Vote-count systems that allow a candidate to win with merely a plurality (i.e., the greatest number of votes, but less than a majority) are vulnerable to spoiler effects. In response to apparent spoiler effects such as this one, and (as some have argued) Ralph Nader's impact on the 2000 U.S. presidential election, some reformers have advocated for the use of ranked-choice voting. In this episode, I talk with political scientists Jason McDaniel (https://politicalscience.sfsu.edu/people/25298/jason-mcdaniel) and Jack Santucci (http://www.jacksantucci.com/) about the potential rewards--but also risks--associated with ranked-choice voting. The risks include ones that could be detrimental to the interests of low-income citizens, and less educated ones.   Episode #607 April 13, 2018 People seem to be in a lot of despair. They feel like they don't have choices. Dan's wife Joanne joins him on this week's podcast and shares some of the trials and tribulations of their life and how the choices they've made have impacted them. Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show.  In this episode I invited Joanne to join me in responding to the flood of messages we're getting from listeners who feel trapped by their circumstances.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: 1.  How much choice do we have in the kind of lives we live?  2.  What happens if you don't even have the support of a spouse?   3.  Where do those whom nobody cares about fit in this?  4. I am 58 and have gotten nowhere in life. When will my turn ever come?  5. I would like to hear any encouragement from experiences of people you might know who hit bottom in every area of life and they went forward. Questions from Dan: What Choices Have You Made? Did you choose the house you're living in? Did you choose the job you have now? Did you choose the car you're driving? Did you choose the college you went to or whether to go to college? Did you choose the person you married?   Comfort is the enemy of progress. P. T. Barnum From The Greatest Showman Click To Tweet Call to Action:   What choices are you making right now?   “Today's show is brought to you by Casper. Resources: Dan Miller's Top 10 Recommended Books –  If there is one thing that has fueled my own success it is the books I have read.  I continue a heavy reading schedule and will until the day I die because the wisdom of the ages is so readily available for any of us – it's a shame to not take advantage of it.   I am asked repeatedly what books I recommend. So here are 10 suggestions for 2018.  You'll notice these are not all business or money-making books, but I truly believe that financial success is a byproduct of personal success. If you want to get rich, work on developing YOU! 1.  Frankl, Viktor.  Man's Search for Meaning.  A classic work by a concentration camp prisoner that shows that even when everything else is taken away, we have the ability to choose.  I read this one about every six months just to remind myself of what is really important. 2.  Gire, Ken.  Windows of the Soul.  One of my favorite books ever.  A gentle guide to help us see God in new ways. I believe it opens our eyes to see more opportunities all around us in the process.  A timeless classic. 3.  Quindlen, Anna.  A Short Guide to a Happy Life.  What does it take to really live deeply and successfully, rather than to just exist?  This little book puts in perspective those things we often consider to be too important. 4.  Schwartz, David.  The Magic of Thinking Big.  Workable methods for thinking big.  How to create your own “good luck.”  The book that put coach Lou Holtz on the road to extraordinary success. 5.  Carnegie, Dale.  How to Win Friends & Influence People.  This is the classic little book on creating great relationships and building trust with others.   6.  Ziglar, Zig.  See You at the Top.  This book is full of easy to understand principles for any age.  We used it as a text book for homeschooling our children.   7.  Hill, Napoleon.  Think and Grow Rich.  I'm sure you've heard of this one.  The principles are as true today as they were in 1937.  I value this book so much I have an original copy.   8.  Lapin, Rabbi Daniel.  Thou Shall Prosper.  Nothing has shaped my thinking on a healthy Biblical perspective on money as much as this book.   9.  Conwell, Russell.  Acres of Diamonds.  I love this little story about discovering that the opportunities for our greatest success are often right under our nose.  Get a digital version here FREE when you sign up for Dan's weekly inspiration and tips on finding or creating work you love. 10.  Canfield, Jack.  The Success Principles.  An incredible compilation of 64 success principles from the co-author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. Dan & Joanne's Decision Making Process: Joanne and I have used a concise process for all the years of our marriage. When confronted with a decision, we allow a 2-week maximum for arriving at a decision. Whether it is where to move, what kind of car to purchase, making a career or business decision, or how to handle a difficult relationship with a relative, we approach the process as follows: 1. State the problem. 2. Get the advice and opinions of others. 3. List the alternatives. 4. Choose the best alternative. 5. Act. And we avoid the crippling power of indecision. Yes, this process must be bathed in prayer. But a daily walk of integrity and character should provide confidence in moving ahead quickly with most any decision. You, too, can deal effectively with the challenge of making solid decisions. Don't be indecisive and unstable in all your ways. Rather, walk in the strength, confidence, and boldness that come from decisive action. I don’t remember getting to a point where I felt like I had caught up and could safely do nothing. Even if I get caught up on the immediate needs like housework or work goals, there are always self-improvement or home-improvement projects, things I’ve been wanting to do with my family, career related study, etc. Every day it feels like I wake up behind in the race. That’s not to say I’m always doing something productive. But at the times I’m doing nothing productive, I’m choosing to do nothing over doing something, whether it’s because I’m exhausted or unmotivated or whatever. But I always have to actively decide to be unproductive over all the things I “should” be doing, and that usually comes with guilt. This is not healthy. Anybody have any books or talks or tips on how to change this mindset?” Of course, immediately he started getting responses.   These were not solutions, however, but affirmations that this was not just him, but so many of us that feel the same way.   It’s the allowing that is the flow of the river…and that’s how you get cruising. “I would love to flow like the river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.” John O’Donahue We have multiple areas of our lives that have to be assessed:   • Work/Finance • Family • Emotional/Spiritual • Personal Development • Physical • Social • Life Tasks   Those “life tasks” at the end are all of the housekeeping to-dos, repairs, errands, day-to-day life requirements that eat up a ton of time and energy.  Everyone dreams of a personal assistant because this one area alone could easily eat up your whole day, every day. So how do we keep from just having that feeling of overwhelm all the time? Six Tips to Eliminate Overwhelm Here are the biggies for me, to ensure you don’t feel behind all the time. 1: Prioritize Recommended Read: The One Thing by Gary Keller  (http://amzn.to/2xrsRSt) Stop multi-tasking and do one thing with excellence. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with that incredible focus   Create Your Priorities – look at what REALLY has to be done. Sometimes, we create a to-do list of so many things, and then we realize that it may not all be necessary. I’ve stressed out looking at a full day of errands, and the more I break it down, realize that there was only ONE of the many things on my to-do list that really needed to be done that day. Breaking it down into bite-size pieces and asking myself, “is it necessary at this moment?” Really helped.    2: Obliterate Obligation Okay, there is a time and place for obligation.  Sometimes going out of your way for someone you love is worth it to see the happiness on their face, even if it’s not your favorite thing.  Some obligation is okay.  But when obligation takes over, you can twist down into a spiral of people-pleasing that is a bottomless pit.  If you start to notice that everything you do all day is based on making someone else happy, it’s time to seriously check yourself.  You are not in charge of anyone else’s happiness – that is their’s to own.  Spread love, fill some buckets, but ensure you are looking at what is critical for you to move forward beyond just meeting everyone else’s needs.  My mother swears by the book “When Pleasing Others is Hurting You” (http://amzn.to/2xyfzJ2) 3: Underpromise, Overdeliver Be careful what you commit to, and ensure you can really follow through.  If you can’t show up on time, don’t say you can.  Don’t accept a project if your plate is already full.  Don’t commit to a deadline that is going to require you to forfeit eating and sleeping to meet it.   “I have a commitment”.  Don’t feel pressure to respond immediately - say “let me check my schedule and get back with you” so you aren’t making a decision under pressure.  It’s okay to say no - provide another resource so it’s not just no, but you offer a solution.   4: Wiggle Room Allow for wiggle room.  Don’t overcommit your day so there is no down time.  We all need rest and we need time to create, process, and think.  Don’t jam pack your day where it’s a marathon.  That is a sure-fire way to create burnout.  Don’t live for that one day when you can rest again.  Intentionally allow that down time every day so you aren’t running on fumes. On that whole “productive” concept.  Let me get one thing straight: Rest IS productive.   Don’t negate your down time. It’s critical to your health, both mentally and physically.  Give yourself grace to veg.   Recommended Read: Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert (http://amzn.to/2yy1Lhx)   Give your creativity a name and spend time with it.  Invite it into your life, and sit with it every day. Creating a Haven of Peace: When Your Feeling Down, Finances Are Flat, and Tempers Are Rising by Joanne Miller (http://amzn.to/2xpQyzv) This is Ashley’s family story written by her mother, with great insights in creating that haven of peace in your home.  5: Timeblock Schedule the fire out of your day. We’ve found flex time during the middle of the day is fine, but the morning and the evening have such a huge impact on how our days can get away from us. Do you want to be a human “being” or a human “doing”?   Recommended Read: The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr.  This is such an incredible book to ensure you are really performing at your peak by being fully present in what you are doing at that moment. The bane of many entrepreneurs is our ability to work anytime we want…which means we are always working and doing “just one more thing.” Those “just one more things”: checking facebook, answering another email, doing one more edit, etc are all areas where the day can get away from us. Your “one thing” can take you down a four hour bunny trail. Schedule your work time, and your play time.  Do these with the same priority level.  My nightly date with Nathan is just as important as my podcast interview.  Don’t negate the importance of life beyond work.  We want to really live, not simply trudge through.  Enjoy this life, and make that a critical component of your day. 6: Bookend Your Day On that note, bookending our day has been huge. We prep our coffee in the evenings so it’s ready to go. Our family agrees on what we are going to have for breakfast so it’s no shock in the morning.  Nathan and I discuss the night before what we need to accomplish the next morning. Set your goals based on the feeling behind them, not just the lofty goal.  What is the emotion behind it all?   Recommended Read: The Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte (http://amzn.to/2kxSjoi). This book rocked me with the concept of one thing: “What is the feeling behind the goal you set?” This is fabulous in writing or audio, and was a pivotal book in directing my life of travel.   Your Life Is Your Responsibility Like I’ve written so many times, we are in charge of our lives.  We have the power to create with intention, or live in reaction.   When we are consistent and stick to a schedule, we find we feel way more in control of our lives – living with intention and not just reacting as life passes us by. This is the third in the "Be The Good, See the Good" Series.   We will dive in to how the uniqueness in each of us strengthens all of us, and learn how we can work in our strengths and recognize that in others.   “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”  ~Marianne Williamson, A Return To Love   What kind of family life do you have?  Do you walk on eggshells and cringe, waiting for the next bomb of conflict to drop in your home?  Is this the family life you truly enjoy coming home to? Ss are steady and stable.  Reserved and yet people-focused.  They listen and observe first, which definitely allows them to notice and be more aware of what is going on with others. When you envision a dog, you think loyal, faithful, dependable and trustworthy. For a dove, you think of a peacemaker and love. Both of these are great descriptors for the S personality style. Of the Earth elements, Ds are fire, Is are air, and an S is water, with its smooth and steady flow. “People will forget what you said.  They will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel.”  Maya Angelou My mother, Joanne Miller, wrote “Creating a Haven of Peace: When Your Feeling Down, Finances are Flat and Tempers are Rising” - she lays out how she broke the cycle of disfunction in her family and intentionally created the “haven of peace” she wanted in her own home. “Don’t ever mistake my silence for ignorance, my calmness for acceptance, or my kindness for weakness.”  Carson Kolhoff The Logsdon family countdown - I was juggling managing www.48Days.com, building www.MamaSaysNamaste.com, unschooling three children, getting the house ready for us to leave indefinitely, and prepping it to be an AirBnB.  Nathan was in real estate and super busy with housing market in Nashville, TN. With selling, sometimes it’s all about semantics.   S’s don’t “sell,”, they “serve.”  Simply switching the terminology from them “selling” to “serving” their client can make a very dynamic and successful salesperson, as they easily see things from other perspectives and can identify the need to truly serve their clients. Are you really lazy and apathetic, or are you simply avoiding conflict and pressure?  Maybe it’s more about security than personal lack of drive.  We had a marriage-centered home - our relationship took priority over our children, and they knew this.  We enforced a “7-7 Rule”, which meant kids were in their beds by 7pm at night - even if they were older and didn’t need to sleep then.  This time was sacred for Nathan and me to reconnect, hash out the day and process it all so we could be better parents for our children the next day.  Having a marriage focused relationship does not mean kids suffer.  I feel it makes children more secure knowing their parents are a united front.  We are very careful with the energy that comes into our home.  Negative or difficult topics aren’t brushed under the rug; however, they are not what we bring into our house.  Our back porch became our safe place to let it all out in the open air.  We chose to bring love, peace and connection back under our roof.  A great book to help you with the baby steps to take action in your life is The One Thing by Gary Keller For an S-style, there are many things being thrown their way, and sometimes complacency is the easiest way to get through. They are peacemakers and tend to be the go-to when teen drama erupts. It can be a lot of pressure to be the shoulder to cry on for every friend, and the stress of carrying everyone else’s burdens can be overwhelming. A coping mechanism may be to numb the emotions by TV, internet/video games, sleeping, drinking/smoking to dull the intensity to a more manageable level. When you see them start to shut down, look for ways to provide some security and consistency in an otherwise roller-coaster life. Not only are they steady, dependable and loyal, but they crave this - steadiness, dependability and loyalty - in their own lives.   Relationships have seasons.  We shift from the parent/toddler relationship, to parent/child, tween, teen, young adult…and eventually the shift is where they are no longer just children but making parenting choices for their parents.  All relationships have seasons, and that’s okay.  Love is a verb - it’s not something that just sits there.  It’s an action you do every day. Make sure you communicate the small things before they become big things. Practice positive self-talk and push yourself to get out of your comfort zone a bit. Create consistency in your life, even when there are unknowns.  Be intentional about creating steady habits that allow for some routine and predictability to help you manage the unpredictable chaos of life.  Characteristics of an S personality style:  Loyal Kind Calm & Steady Low Energy Observant Reliable Non-confrontational Indecisive Competent Peacemaker Patient Follows through with tasks Sensitive Quiet but witty Respects authority Loves to serve and support others Resists change Resents being pushed and can shut down/become passive aggressive Easygoing Relaxed They are motivated by: Deep connections with others Feeling needed (emphasize you need their help) They are upset by: Feeling insecure and/or overwhelmed To help foster the relationship: Help them to express their feelings (don’t wait until it’s a mountain - address the little molehills) Teach them how to make an informed decision so they have confidence in their ability Help them adapt to a faster pace when needed Teach them how to stand up for themselves: Kindness does not equal weakness! Practice positive self-talk Get involved in outside activities Encourage them to step outside their comfort zone - change can be positive! Give space, but don’t allow them to shut down Encouraging phrases: I so appreciate your help I love your compassionate heart I love hearing what you have to say Thank you for being so patient with me. You really thought that through - that shows me how important it was to you I really am grateful for your support   Final Tips: • If you are angry, tone it down. Strong aggressive approaches are too intimidating. • Your tone of voice and body language immediately set the stage for whether your child is able to listen or is retreating from conflict. • Allow for some consistency and routine in your daily life so your S child has comfort in the predictability. • Give your S child some time to adapt to changes. If you know of some change coming, give them advance notice so they can prepare and be able to think and talk through concerns. • High Ss don’t care for surprises. They want time to plan and process. • Ss, when hurt, can build up resentment and carry deep grudges. Work through ways to process and let things go, and stress the importance of letting the negative emotions out instead of stuffing them in. Best “cheat sheet” to find out personality style?   Ask this question: “Tell me your story” . A high S style will tell you about the relationships first. An adult will immediately tell you they are a mother, father, husband, wife, etc and tell about the family members. A kid will tell you about their pets, their siblings, and their friends. The first identifier for them will be the relationships they have. Read more about the S Personality style in this blog post:  Never Confuse Kindness for Weakness: The High S Style   Please remember to subscribe, rate and review this podcast!  Your feedback helps me deliver more of what you want - it means a lot to me as I grow this.  Thank you!   *Podcast music by the awesome Renee & Jeremy who cover "Put a Little Love In Your Heart" by Jackie DeShannon.  Props to both of them for this beautiful rendition that epitomizes what I want for families!

Exercising Your Optimistic Muscle

Friday evening, 20/20 presented Robin Roberts courageous journey to beat MDS and return as anchor of Good Morning America. We watched as Robin gave us an inside look at her struggles through chemo, a bone marrow transplant and losing her mother. At one point during her conversation with Dianne Sawyer she mentions that she is an optimistic person and the more you exercise that optimistic muscle, the stronger it gets. I am naturally optimistic and it has served me well in life and business. However, many people I meet tend to look at what can go wrong or when the other shoe will drop. Lesa and I recently returned from speaking on the Wisdom Meets Passion Cruise with Dan and Joanne Miller, Rory and Amanda Vaden and a group of amazing people. It just so happens that we were at sea the same time the Carnival Triumph was crippled waiting on tugboats to bring it back to dry land. There were concerns from friends that we were on that cruise ship and we were not. We did have a couple of people tell us that we should stay off cruise ships because you never know what will happen. These same people are constantly telling me to play it safe. I respond to these people saying, “Maybe we should never do anything but sit at home and play it safe. Never go anywhere, never try anything new and never take a chance.” What kind of life is that? The people that give me this advice have the fruit of this mentality reflected in the way they live. It is usually accompanied by a negative, woe is me attitude. One of these people followed up their concerns with an “I will never be able to afford a cruise anyway” comment. I chose to take the chance and I was rewarded with time with great friends, making new friends, and sitting with Lesa on Magen's Bay in St. Thomas. Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence. ~ Helen Keller Here are some ways you can exercise your Optimism: 1. Smile. Put on a happy face and you might be surprised when you get one back. A smile will also trigger positive thoughts in your brain. 2. Talk like an optimist. If you speak in a positive way, you will become more optimistic. Speak the results you want. 3. Count your blessings. There is always someone worse off that you. Be grateful for what you have. 4. Protect your mind. Don't allow yourself to be influenced by depressing or negative thoughts. I quit watching the news years ago. I control what goes into my mind. Listen to your favorite music or something funny. You can choose the way you think. Put on a smile and have a great week! Pierce

My younger son served as an intern at our church this summer working in the children's ministry. The staff invited families of the eleven interns to a dinner to thank them and celebrate the end of a great summer. I went to support my son and see friends and have a great meal. By the way, the lasagna was delicious. As usual, I received more than a great meal. Pastor Tom McCoy delivered a message of encouragement from Jeremiah to each of the young people who served. As I listened I was challenged and inspired. I remember consciously thinking, “I am really glad I showed up.” The first step in being challenged and inspired is to leave the cave and participate. The cave can be your physical home and you should leave to interact with people that are looking to achieve a higher purpose. Many times they will ask more of you than you thought you were able to give. You can also turn off your TV and read a book. You can choose to listen to audio recordings in your car or while you work in the yard. You can tap into the wisdom of those who have gone before you by simply making small adjustments in your lifestyle. The second step and key component is that you must be open and hungry to learn. Several people sat in that room with me the other night and they were not challenged or inspired. Frankly, they probably could not wait for it to be over. I am challenged and inspired in several areas of my life by people and information I choose to surround myself. I am challenged and inspired by: Going to church and listening to a powerful sermon from God's word or having lunch with my friend Jason where he challenges me to find life's truth. My beautiful wife Lesa with her encouragement, tireless faith and integrity. She helps me be a better man, husband and father. My son Nick who encourages me to live a healthy life so I can enjoy my grandchildren. Also, his drive and focus is contagious. My son Nathan with his gracious personality and attitude. Also, his call to a greater purpose and service. My friends Dan and Joanne Miller that have shown me that I can love work and live with purpose. Listening to Dave Ramsey show me how to be responsible with my finances. There are many more people that have challenged and inspired me through their friendship, coaching and writing. Too many to name. I hope you will intentionally seek people and information that will help you reach a higher level of success in all areas of your life. “From the standpoint of daily life, however, there is one thing we do know: that we are here for the sake of each other – above all for those upon whose smile and well-being our own happiness depends, and also for the countless unknown souls with whose fate we are connected by a bond of sympathy. Many times a day I realize how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labors of my fellow men, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.” — Albert Einstein Please share when you have been challenged and inspired. I look forward to hearing from you. Share in the comment section below. Have a great week! Pierce

Lesa and I just arrived home from the No More Mondays Cruise with Dan and Joanne Miller and several other speakers and guests. There were many great moments and we made some new friends. I would like to tell you about one of these moments. On Tuesday we arrived in San Juan Puerto Rico and left the ship to explore this historic city. While we were leaving the ship we were bombarded with offers to tour the area. As our group gathered to discuss a plan, we were approached by a very polite man named Victor. Victor did such a great job that he was a topic of discussion during the remainder of the cruise. When I spoke to the group on Saturday, I used Victor as an example because he did everything with excellence. The first thing he did was set us at ease. He told us the price and how it compared with his competition. He also told us that we did not have to pay until after the tour and if we were not satisfied with the tour, we did not have to pay. How could we lose? For the next hour and a half we were educated on a wide range of facts about the city. Victor was fun, entertaining and educational. We all received so much more than we expected. Everyone in our group gladly paid his asking price and more as we exited the bus. In a nutshell, he set us at ease, over delivered what he promised and was paid well for his effort. Many times we remember and share the bad experiences. Victor made our experience memorable in a very good way. This is selling at its very best. We can all learn a lot from Victor. Have a great week!
