As we celebrate 500 episodes of Podcast Talent Coach, I want to share with you six mentors who have shaped my journey over the past 10 years. LEARNING FROM MENTORS I learned long ago that I don't know everything and never will. Every experience is an opportunity to learn something. Conferences and conventions are always such a powerful experience for me. Many people say they rarely go to the session and instead have conversations in the halls. I can understand that. But, I think they are missing the power of the collective mind. Mingling in the halls during a conference will definitely grow your network. It has a place in your business. However if you skip all the sessions, you are missing ideas that could take your business to an entirely new level. We would attend the Country Radio Seminar every year in radio. I would travel with my music director for the station. During the day, we would take in all the sessions of the conferences. At night, we would split up to attend events and network with artists and record labels. From the sessions, we would learn new ideas to implement with the stations. At night, we would network with people who could help us implement those ideas. Then one day our company decided it wasn't necessary for both of us to be there. That single decision cut our learning in half and diminished the networking we were able to do. The company thought the conference was nothing but a party. It may have been for those who spent all of their time in the halls. When you're learning from mentors and expanding your thinking, things are possible beyond your imagination. These six mentors helped my achieve levels bigger than I every dreamed. It is my hope that these nuggets spur some new ideas for you as well. DAN MILLER The first is the mentor who has influenced my life the longest. Dan Miller's book and podcast "48 Days To The Work You Love" inspired me to follow my dream and start my own business. Dan is author of the New York Times best-selling 48 Days To The Work You Love and Wisdom Meets Passion, No More Dreaded Monday and An Understanding Heart. His 48 Days Podcast consistently ranks in the top 1% of all podcasts worldwide and his 48DaysEagles.com community is viewed as an example around the world for those seeking to find – or create – the work and the life they love. His podcast sits at the center of his multiple streams of income. Unfortunately, we lost Dan in January of this year after a very brief battle with cancer. Dan's attitude through that entire struggle was impressive and uplifting. He kept asking as he always did, "What does this make possible?" Dan saw the silver lining in every cloud. He was an amazing man and a mentor to me in so many ways. Dan joined my on Episode 466 to discuss multiple streams of income. You can find the episode at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/466. DAN'S NUGGETS Here are a few nuggets from that episode. Resilience in the Face of Adversity: "When we hit Covid and I couldn't have live events for a couple years there, that had been a big resource for us, a big revenue stream, but not being able to have live events, it didn't really affect us. My revenue continued to go up because we made content available to people in other ways that they could experience, even if they didn't come to Franklin, Tennessee."— Dan Miller 00:24:39 – 00:25:03. Life Reassessment in Midlife Careers: "What surprised me is I had doctors and dentists and pastors and engineers and accountants showing up and why you guys here? And it was like, well, we're doing okay. You know, everybody looking in from the outside to see us is doing okay, but I don't think this is it."— Dan Miller 00:26:29 – 00:26:45. How to Turn Your Writing into Income: "How do you take just a raw idea and turn it into real income? But those came directly from people asking, how do I do that?"— Dan Miller 00:30:42 – 00:30:50. Easy Income Streams for Podcasters: "The easiest next step is coaching. Because if you have a podcast and you're talking about personal development and growth or business success or how to scale or those things, you're inevitably going to have people ringing your doorbell saying, can I talk to you?"— Dan Miller 00:44:47 – 00:45:43. I'll always cherish everything I've learned from Dan and all the inspiration he provided. You can find more about Dan at https://www.48days.com. MARC MAWHINNEY The next mentor who has been a big influence on me over the past decade and 500 episodes was one of my very first coaches. Marc Mawhinney is a lifelong entrepreneur who helps coaches get more clients without paid advertising! He achieves this with his coaching programs, his podcast Natural Born Coaches, his Facebook group The Coaching Jungle, and his Secret Coach Club. Marc has been a speaker at events like Social Media Marketing World, frequently makes media appearances and contributes for Entrepreneur.com. He is a master at joint venture partnerships. I discovered Marc through his Coaching Jungle Facebook group and he soon became my coach. He taught me the power of sending a daily email. Our coaching sessions helped me refine my offers and get my business to the next level.  Marc appeared on episode 333 with me to discuss the power of joint venture partnerships. You can find the episode at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/333. MARC'S GEMS Here are a few gems Marc shared during our conversation. Stand Firm on Your Beliefs: "Sure, you're going to turn some people off, but you're going to attract the people who you want to attract, and that's exactly what you do."— Marc Mawhinney 00:16:25 – 00:16:31. The Importance of Community for Coaches: "Whatever you do, you need a place to gather your potential clients. You know, people to get to know, like and trust you."— Marc Mawhinney 00:20:27 – 00:20:34. Viral Topic - The Power of Community: "I can't count how many times someone said to me, mark, I love your Facebook group. It's helped me so much the last few years."— Marc Mawhinney 00:20:55 – 00:21:44. I can't thank Marc enough for pointing me in the right direction with his coaching. Find Marc in his Coaching Jungle Facebook group. CINDY J. HOLBROOK One day Marc was invited to participate in a giveaway. It didn't fit in his marketing plan at the time, so he sent the organizer to me feeling we might work well together. That organizer was Cindy J, The Visibility Wiz. Not only did I participate in her giveaway, Cindy soon became my next coach and she's one of the best in the business. Cindy guides entrepreneurs and small business owners to thrive as you go up the ladder from being the best-kept secret to Trusted and In-Demand Authority. She has been coaching since 2009. Through our work together, Cindy taught me the power of visibility, how to use giveaways to grow my list, and ways to partner with others.  She is simply an all around great person. I love her to death and really appreciate all she has given me over the years. Cindy was on episode 479 of Podcast Talent Coach to talk about visibility. You can find the episode at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/479. CINDY'S SUGGESTIONS Here are a few things we learned in that episode. From Social Services to Coaching Success: "But I have all this knowledge of the online world that I utilized to get clients. And, I was able to leave social services within 2 years of becoming a coach, and that's when I started attending a lot of events. And people were constantly coming up to me."— Cindy J. Holbrook 00:20:23 – 00:20:41. Title: Maximizing Advertising DollarsQuote: "My advertising dollars goes towards participating in giveaways or speaking in front of people, you know, being a sponsor at events. That's where my advertising dollars go because I get more return on my money that way."— Cindy J. Holbrook 00:35:04 – 00:35:18. The Power of Collaboration: "I didn't start collaborating with other experts till, 2014. And that's what finally pushed me over to 6 figures was whenever I started collaborating with other experts."— Cindy J. Holbrook 00:39:11 – 00:39:24. How to Boost Your Business Today: "If you start doing something every day, you make sure you do at least 1 money making activity Monday through Friday or whatever your workdays are. You're going to start seeing an increase in everything, in visibility, influence, and profits."— Cindy J. Holbrook 00:42:44 – 00:42:58. Cindy is amazing when it come to leveling up your visibility. Find her online at https://www.cindyjholbrook.com. IMAN AGHAY After I was working with Cindy for a few months, she suggest I attend Collaborate. It was an amazing 3-day event to meet JV partners. This one event changed my business more than I could ever have imagined. At the time, Collaborate was run by Iman Aghay and Rich German. Iman has been so influential in so many aspects of my business. Through this event, Iman taught me how to properly joint venture with others. He has taught me how to create my courses and events. More importantly, Iman showed my how to sell what I do. Iman Aghay is a serial entrepreneur, international speaker, and a nine-time #1 best-selling author. He is best known as the co-founder of Actionera, a platform that assists experts in building mobile apps to enhance their income and impact. Iman hasn't been on the podcast. However, I did a deep dive into finding promotional partners using everything Iman taught me. You can find that in episode 391 at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/391. IMAN'S INSPIRATION Here are few takeaways from that episode. How to Skyrocket Your Podcast Growth: "Just imagine how your podcast and your business could grow if you could find 40 partners who would be willing to promote you to their fans, to their tribe, to their followers."— Erik K. Johnson 00:01:07 – 00:01:14. The Best Part of Pitch Refinement: "But the best part is everybody in the circle's on the same page with regard to who talks, what they talk about, how long they talk. There's no pressure. You don't need to awkwardly walk up to anyone to strike up a conversation like you would in a at a networking event."— Erik K. Johnson 00:06:20 – 00:06:38. Power of Partnerships: "I've been able to grow my email list from about 500 to nearly 4,500. My podcast downloads have doubled. I've made affiliate commissions from promoting those partners, and I had partners promote my courses and my coaching to their audience as well just to help me grow."— Erik K. Johnson 00:10:08 – 00:10:30. The Power of Partnership: "If you wanna go fast, travel alone. If you wanna go far, travel together."— Erik K. Johnson 00:10:53 – 00:11:01. Iman Aghay is an amazing online marketer. He is also the co-owner of Actionera. It is a platform to help you build your own mobile app. Find details on Collaborate at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/collaborate. You can learn more about Actionera at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/actionera and find Iman at https://www.imanaghay.com. JIM PADILLA While I was attending one of the Collaborate events, Iman invited a guest speaker to that event. That guest talked a lot about actually making sales. He was Jim Padilla and he is my fifth mentor on this journey. Jim is a Global Impact Strategist & Investor and the founder and CEO of Gain The Edge. It's a done-for-you provider of industry-leading sales systems and unicorn sales professionals. Jim co-heads Gain the Edge with his amazing wife, Cyndi Padilla. The two of them have generated over quarter billion dollars in sales for a long line of high-level entrepreneurs. Jim's mission is to help purpose-driven thought-leaders untangle themselves from the day-to-day minutiae of seeking leads and sales, so they're free to amplify their impact - while scaling their business! Shortly after getting into Jim's world, he became my coach. Jim helps me build my sales systems and strategies. I've gone from being an entrepreneur to actually running a business. The transformation has been amazing. Jim joined me on episode 465 to discuss making sales. If you want to increase your sales, find this episode at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/465. JIM'S GENIUS Here are few nuggets from my conversation with Jim. From Struggle to Success: "And little did I know that, you know, 20 years later, I'd be making 1,000,000 of dollars teaching other people how to read the room and how to bend influence in their direction so you can be asset instead of a threat to the people who show up in your world, and then they wanna be able to buy from you and give you their credit card."— Jim Padilla 00:12:06 – 00:12:58. The Core of True Expertise: "What people need to dive into is they understand that you're an expert, but they really need to understand who you are as a person and why what you do matters."— Jim Padilla 00:19:07 – 00:19:11. Seeing Opportunities in Chaos: "All they see is all the problems that are in the world are truly just opportunities waiting to be solved if you know how to talk about it and know how to articulate it and to see things differently."— Jim Padilla 00:24:57 – 00:25:04. Maximizing Your Existing Network: "Most obvious buyers you have are the people who already bought from you."— Jim Padilla 00:44:07 – 00:44:10. Jim and Cyndi are amazing. Find them at https://www.gaintheedgenow.com. DAVE JACKSON The last mentor I want to share with you is the guy who became the inspiration for this podcast. In 2013 I was writing articles about podcasting for New Media Expo. Out of the blue, I got an email from Dave Jackson at the School of Podcasting. He was interested in having a conversation to see how we might support each other. During that conversation, Dave said he loved my articles. Then he asked why I didn't have a podcast of my own. Great question, Dave. If I'm writing about podcasting, shouldn't I have a show of my own. Shortly after that conversation, this show was born. And our friendship has continued over the years. Dave Jackson launched the School of Podcasting in 2005. He was inducted into the Podcasting Hall of Fame in 2018. He is the author of the book, Profit from Your Podcast: Proven Strategies to Turn Listeners into a Livelihood. Over the years he has launched over 30 different podcasts with over 4 million downloads. Dave and I currently co-host the Podcast Review Show where we help podcasters improve. You can find that show at https://www.podcastreviewshow.com. Dave was a guest on episode 485 to talk all things podcasting. You can listen to that episode at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/485. DAVE'S BRILLIANCE Here are a few takeaways from my conversation with Dave. Viral Topic: The Importance of Mic Technique: "When I moved into this house had no carpet, and it was just this giant echo chamber. So the first thing I did was, like, okay. We need we need a carpet. We need some rug, something like that."— Dave Jackson 00:32:58 – 00:33:07. The Blue Yeti Misconception: "Technically, it's not a bad microphone, but what most people overlook is that thing can pick up, if you want, in every single direction. Well, that's just screaming, pick up the neighbor's lawnmower and everything else."— Dave Jackson 00:33:44 – 00:33:57. Mastering Freelance Success: "If I'm trying to position myself as an expert, I either want to interview people who know the people that should be hiring me or in some cases, just interview the people who should be hiring me."— Dave Jackson 00:37:54 – 00:38:03. Big thanks to Dave Jackson for all the help and inspiration over the years. Find Dave at www.SchoolofPodcasting.com. FIND YOUR MENTOR Those are six mentors who have had the biggest impact on my journey. There are so many other people who have inspired, helped, and collaborated with me over the years and through these 500 episodes. I would never have enough time to name all of them. From my wife Jen, to Jon Fugler and the various members of our mastermind over the years. From the clients, partners, and supporters, each has played a part in this journey. But most of all, I want to thank you. Without your support week after week and episode after episode, this show would never have reached 500 episodes. Thanks for being here. Thanks for allowing me to be part of your podcast journey. Let me know how I can help. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. We will develop your plan and see how I can help and support you to achieve your podcast goals.

We lost Dan Miller a few weeks ago, and Dan was someone who I always walked about smarter after talking to him. I had him on the first episode of the Grow Your Community show, and today I'm replaying that episode. I also learned that Lee Silversteen who appeared on episode 539 has run out of options in regards to battling his cancer. So this episode is a bit "dark" but, well, sometimes life is dark... Your podcast gives you great opportunities to create multiple streams of income. The show is like the gateway for your clients to enter your world. After they enter, help them solve their problems with a specific stream of income. Dan Miller of 48 Days to the Work You Love joins us on this episode today to discuss how his podcast sits at the center of his revenue universe. ONE STREAM OF INCOME Before you can create multiple streams of income, you need to get your first stream producing income. Focus on one before you launch others. There is power in focus. There is a saying that is contributed to Confucius. Then again, many sayings are. The saying is, "The man who chases two rabbits catches neither." When your focus is divided, you accomplish very little. Get your first stream of income working before you launch the next. You will find much more success. I suggest you start with the easiest stream of income. The easiest is the one that is easiest for you. We each have our own super power. Leverage your strengths. Before we talk with Dan Miller, let's look at a few options for your first stream of income. Some of these links are affiliate links, one of my streams of income. When you purchase through an affiliate link, it doesn't cost you any more than it would to buy directly from the site. However, I may receive a small commission by promoting it. I only promote products I use and believe in. The last thing I want to do is promote something that isn't something I trust will help you. ONE-ON-ONE COACHING One-on-one coaching is typically the easiest place to start if you teach people how to do something. When you share your expertise to help people overcome their challenge, this stream of income is easy to set up. First, determine the outcome you help your client achieve. Next, offer that coaching to your audience with a clear benefit. You can do your coaching calls on Zoom or the phone. Have clients pay you through PayPal or something similar. My first client sent me a money order. Craft a simple agreement, so each person knows what to deliver and what they can expect. Now you're rolling. GROUP COACHING Group coaching is another option. This stream of income takes a little longer to get traction. With one-on-one coaching, you only need one person. For group, you need multiple people. You will probably start your group with one person and let it grow. Just let the one person know they will get personal attention until others enroll. As you enroll multiple people, it is much easier when you set up recurring payments through a shopping cart. It is a challenge manually keeping track of who paid and when payments are due. I use ThriveCart. They currently offer a lifetime deal, but that is going away soon. You can see if the deal is still available through my affiliate link at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/ThriveCart. COURSES Courses are a great way to do the work once and sell it multiple times. However, it takes consistent marketing. Don't believe if you build it they will come. You need to consistently get your course in front of your clients. When you create your course, solve one specific problem. I made the mistake of putting everything I know into my first course. Nobody bought it. Nobody wanted everything. They simply wanted to solve their most pressing problem. To create a course, you need a course platform. ThriveCart actually has a course platform built in called Learn+. You can see it on that same page at www.podcasttalentcoach.com/ThriveCart. I have also used Groove. It's an all-in-one platform that is pretty powerful. You can see that at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Groove. I have also used Teachable for my courses. Teachable is easy to learn. However, they standard plan has recently limited users to five courses. I've outgrown that, so I've moved onto other platforms. There are many other course platforms. Do your homework to find one that is perfect for you. MEMBERSHIPS The next powerful stream of income is a membership site. This could be a combination of coaching, courses, and content. There are a ton of ways to set up your membership site. It really depends what you want to include and accomplish. There are plugins available for your Wordpress site, like WishList Member. You can use membership platforms, like Might Networks. The all-in-one platforms like Groove and Kajabi also have membership options in their systems. You can take a look at GrooveMember inside of Groove at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/Groove. Your membership platform will control your content, which members have access, and how they pay for that access. AFFILIATE COMMISSIONS Affiliate commissions are a great stream of income to get started generating income. The benefit of affiliate commissions is the ease. You don't have to build anything. You simply promote others and get paid when something sells. The down side of affiliate marketing is the work. You won't typically create repeat customers, because you are selling for somebody else. The provider will have the relationship. Just remember to vet the products and services you promote. Never be an affiliate for something you haven't used yourself or done complete due diligence to ensure the quality of the product and provider. By law, you cannot say you've used something or that it delivers a result unless you have used the product or service and receive that result. Be careful what you say. PRODUCTS You can also create a stream of income with products. You might write books, create software, or build apps. This is a great way to do the work once and sell it again and again. The benefit of products is the relationship. You can create repeat customers and lead them to the next step with you. The down side is the revenue and time. You won't make much off the sale of a book or app. You'll need to sell a lot to make any meaningful revenue. Products also take a long time to create. You don't typically write a book in a weekend. Therefore, let your product lead to something bigger. DAN MILLER Dan Miller has multiple streams of income. And his podcast sits at the middle of that network of goods and services. Dan has an amazing community call the 48 Days Eagles. I am the Dean of Podcasting in the membership. It is an amazing way to find or create the work you love. Dan is holding a free 48-Day Dream Live Blueprint event online on November 14th, 48 days before the end of the year. If you would like to create big dreams for next year, visit www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/dream. You can see the full 48 Days Eagles membership opportunity at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/eagles. Breaking Down An Effective Introduction – PTC 324

Podcast Talent Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 21, 2021 29:29

The introduction of your podcast is probably the most critical part of your show. A typical listener will give you between 90 seconds and a few minutes to entice them to stick around. Don't blow it. You can't catch up to a slow start. Today, we are going to break down six different podcast intros. I will show you which parts of the introduction are effective and which are not. When you create your podcast introduction, you need to put yourself in the shoes of your listener. What is in it for them? That is what they will be asking. How will they be better by the end of the episode? If you are going to use a clip from the episode at the beginning, you need to open a conversation loop. Tease the content to come by creating some intrigue. Make your listener want to stick around. If you can't do this, don't use a clip. The voiceover intro should tell your listener who you help, what you help them do and why. You do not need to structure it in those exact words. However, your intro should answer those questions. As an example, our first sample episode opens with, "Do you love your work? Do you think it's possible? You're about to find out." Do you know what this show is all about? It sounds like a show about finding a career that you love. I don't even need to tell you the name of the podcast. Edit your intro. Keep it short. Let it give your episode momentum. Don't coast and wander your way into the show. Start quickly. Capture the attention of your listener and get them excited about the content. If you would like help with your introduction, grab my Podcast Introduction template at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/intro. Ok, let's jump into the intros. First up is "48 Days to the Work You Love" with Dan Miller. 48 DAYS TO THE WORK YOU LOVE WITH DAN MILLER Host: Well, a listener says, "Hey Dan … all this talk about setting goals and getting things done sounds great but, I’m a thinker. Not a doer." (VO over music bed) Do you love your work? Do you think it’s possible? Well, you’re about to find out. It’s time for 48 Days to the Work You Love with Dan Miller on the 48 Days online radio show. Whether you need a professional tune up, or a work overhaul, this is the program for you. Now here’s your host, Dan Miller. Host: Well, what do you think? Do you need a tune up or a complete overhaul? You know, we’re still here at the beginning of the year. A great time to be looking at that. Just gonna have some little kind of subtle realignment to what you’re gonna do? Or, are you gonna really make a break and head off in a new direction? We’re hearing from lots of you who are doing both of those things. Delighted to hear the plans you’re making. You know, last week, the lead in was, "I know what to do, but can’t make myself do it." We had a whole lot of you that that apparently kind of struck a nerve, and you commented on that. I’m delighted to have you do so. We’re gonna talk some more about that. What is it that keeps us from doing? There may be some unique kind of built-in traits that we have that make us more a thinker than a doer. Well, we’ll look at that. So, questions … "I know what I need to do, but I’m easily turned back to wonder and invention." Somebody asked, "How can I make some money off the land I just inherited?" "Where do you find customers who aren’t broke?" Love that question. We’re gonna dig in. ANALYSIS First, the title of the episode doesn't get too cute. It let's you know what the podcast is all about. "48 Days To The Work You Love" sounds like a career search podcast. The name isn't too clever or too cool for the room. The tease to open the podcast is effective. It is short and to the point, while creating anticipation of what is to come. The tease gets you guessing what the quote is all about. It makes you want to stick around to close the circle. The voiceover introduction starts with the listener point of view. "Do you love your work? Do you think it's possible? Well, you're about to find out." These three sentences reinforce exactly what this podcast is all about. The intro makes it relevant to you. We don't waste a lot of time with information you don't need. Dan comes in after that with the overview of this particular episode. We know what the podcast is all about. He now tells us how this particular episode is special. What makes this one different than the others. Again, he begins in the shoes of the listener with, "Well, what do you think? Do you need a tune up or a complete overhaul?" He gets the listener invested in the content. Dan does a nice job creating social proof. He uses phrases like, "We’re hearing from lots of you", "Delighted to hear the plans you’re making", "and you commented on that", and "So, questions …" All of these statements show listeners exactly what he wants them to do. Finally, Dan gives an outline of the questions he will address on this episode. This is sort of a table of contents. Overall, this is a solid intro. BUSINESS UNUSUAL The next intro is “Business Unusual” with Barbara Corcoran from Shark Tank. (Host) Hey this is Barbara Corcoran you are now tuned in to "Business Unusual". And, everything you ever learned about business, throw it out the window. I’m gonna tell you the real deal. Listen in. Today, I’m gonna answer all your burning question about work, life, starting a company, getting on track, and much much more. Be sure to call into the "Business Unusual hotline" with your question at 888-BARBARA. That’s 888- BARBARA. But first today we’re gonna be talking about moms getting back in the workforce. What do you do when you put your life on pause, or at least your career on pause, to raise a bunch of kids and you want to get back? Listen in. I’m going to give you great advice. ANALYSIS This is a solid intro. It doesn't start with your typical sample clip from the episode. Barbara gets right into it. A sample clip isn't necessary. If you plan to use a clip to tease the episode, you need to do it properly. A teaser clip should create some anticipation. It should open the loop that needs to be closed by listening to the show. Pulling a random clip doesn't accomplish either of those. Barbara tells us exactly what the podcast is all about. You know she tells it like it is. Her intro is focused on you. She says, "I’m gonna answer all your burning question about work, life, starting a company, getting on track, and much much more." She also gives you the phone number to participate. She effectively tells you what the podcast is about, so you know it is right for you. Barbara then says, "Today we’re gonna be talking about moms getting back in the workforce. What do you do when you put your life on pause, or at least your career on pause, to raise a bunch of kids and you want to get back? Listen in." She sets up the content for today to keep you around for the entire episode. This whole intro is short and sweet. I love the momentum it creates. FLIPPED LIFESTYLE Next is the "Flipped Lifestyle" podcast with Shane and Jocelyn Sams. (Host) Hey y’all! On today’s podcast we welcome back Brooke Butcher. Last time Brooke was on the show, she was just starting out and growing her online nursing community. On this episode we get to celebrate Brooke's growing membership and her incredible milestone. Brooke just quit her job and works full-time online. On today’s podcast Shane is helping Brooke get used to her new, self-employed, location independent lifestyle as well as growing her nursing membership. You’ll learn how to balance your time between business and life while working at home, promotions to help grow your membership site and how to know when it’s time to go full-time online. You are going to love today’s podcast. Enjoy the show. (Voiceover) Welcome to the "Flipped Lifestyle" podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We are a real family who figured out how to make our entire living online. Now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? Alright. Let’s get started. (Host) What’s going on everybody? Welcome back to the "Flipped Lifestyle" podcast. It is great to be back with you today and I am super excited because not only is this an amazing member of the Flip Your Life community on the show, it is a repeat guest. It is someone we know and love and we are going to be celebrating some major, major wins in her online business and her membership world today. Welcome back to the program Brooke Butcher. ANALYSIS This intro is solid, but could be cleaned up a bit. The opening bit delivered by Jocelyn before the voiceover says much the same thing Shane says after the intro. Jocelyn's part could have been cut in half. This portion is intended to get you to listen to the rest of the episode. We don't need a full guest introduction here. This portion would have been sufficient: "On today’s podcast Shane is helping Brooke get used to her new self-employed, location independent lifestyle as well as growing her nursing membership. You’ll learn how to balance your time between business and life while working at home, promotions to help grow your membership site and how to know when it’s time to go full-time online. You are going to love today’s podcast. Enjoy the show." After this part, Jocelyn says Brooke is self-employed, location independent and the owner of a nursing membership site. We're going to learn about time management and how to promote our site. Shane then comes on and again tells us that Brooke has a membership site. We got that in Jocelyn's portion. He says she is a repeat guest. We know that, too. Finally, he tells us we are going to celebrate some major wins in her membership. Jocelyn told us that as well. I do like the voiceover intro. We know what the show is about. It is focused on us. "Welcome to the 'Flipped Lifestyle' podcast, where life always comes before work. We're your hosts, Shane and Jocelyn Sams. We are a real family who figured out how to make our entire living online. Now we help other families do the same. Are you ready to flip your life? Alright. Let’s get started." With this intro, we know exactly what the show is all about and what we are getting. We know how we will be better off when the episode is over. I also like the way Shane doesn't waste much time before he jumps into the interview. Tell us what we need to know to understand this interview is applicable to my situation. SPEAK UP The next podcast is "Speak Up" with Matthew and Elysha Dicks. (Host) Welcome to "Speak Up", a podcast about telling better stories. This is episode 103. I’m Elysha Dicks. I’m the Executive Director of Speak Up. We are a Hartford-based storytelling organization. We produce shows, teach workshops, and help people find and tell better stories. And I am Matthew Dicks. I am the husband of Elysha Dicks. I am also the Artistic Director of Speak Up. I’m a storyteller myself. I’m an author of several novels. And the non-fiction title "Storyworthy: Engage, Teach and Persuade and Change Your Life Through the Power of Storytelling". A book that will help you become a better story teller. How are you doing today, honey? I am fine. Excellent. How are you? I am great. I am happy to be podcasting again with you. Yes. It’s a glorious summer day. We only have two weeks left of our summer vacation before we have to return to school, but we are trying to suck the marrow out of every minute we have. That sounds gross. No, it’s a phrase. I know it’s a phrase. That doesn’t mean it’s good. Alright. It’s poetry. You’re supposed to suck the marrow out of life. I know I’ve heard it before. This one I’m going to pass on. Alright I’m going to be sucking the marrow over here. Suck it by yourself. Do you have any follow up for us honey? Not that I can think of today, how about you? ANALYSIS "Welcome to 'Speak Up', a podcast about telling better stories." This is probably the shortest intro that tells us exactly what the show is all about. I like this a lot. No questions here. However, they follow it with "episode 103". Is that important? Not really. That doesn't have anything to do with anything. Leave it out. Elysha then gives us their pedigree. I usually suggest podcasters start in the shoes of the listener. However, this is effective in giving the audience a reason to believe what they have to say. This intro gives them credibility. We also know they teach workshops and produce shows. We know they know what they are doing. We also know we can get more of what they have to offer if we choose. The intro is followed by some chit chat. I love the way the play off each other. It gives us a sense of their style and sense of humor. However, it gives us no reason to stick around. You can't catch up to a slow start. If Elysha and Matthew took some of their story teachings, they would realize they need to start strong. Set the stage. Suck me in. Give me a reason to care. "How are you? Fine. Glad to be podcasting. Have two weeks left in summer break." I'm getting fidgety listening to this. I'm inclined to find something more compelling. They need to hook me sooner. Most people give themselves anywhere between 90 seconds and a few minutes to decide if they will stick with an episode or find something else. Make it count. INSPIRED MONEY This one is "Inspired Money" with Andy Wang. (Clip) Today on "Inspired Money" … Take this year, what a crazy year we’ve been in. So if I think that nobody’s hiring, there’s no opportunity for a small businesses, they’re all shutting down, that we’re all going to get sick and then it’s going to kill a whole lot of us, well, there’s some pieces of reality in there. If that’s what is dominant in my mind, I’m dead in the water. I’m not going to start a profitable business. I’m not going to see new opportunities. But if I think wow, this is a challenging time. With every challenge there’s the equal seeds of opportunity. If I believe that, then I look at this, ok, i didn’t expect this to happen. Yes, it closed this door. What am I going to find if I just re-direct a little bit in terms of a new opportunity? This is episode 163 with career coach and author of "48 Days To The Work You Love", Dan Miller. (Voiceover) Welcome to "Inspired Money". My name is Andy Wang. A managing partner at Runnymede Capital Management. Each week we bring you an interesting person to help you get inspired, shift your perspectives on money and achieve incredible things. From making it to giving it away, inspired money means making a difference, creating something bigger than oneself, and maybe, just maybe, making the world a better place. Thank you for joining me. (Host) Hey inspired money maker, welcome back. If this is your first time listening welcome. Are you happy in your career? Do you feel like you found your calling? So many people aren’t quite sure and experience midlife crisis. I want to open with a quote from our guest. "Success is never an accident. It typically starts with imagination, becomes a dream, stimulates a goal, grows into a plan of action, which then inevitably meets with opportunity. Don’t get stuck along the way." That’s Dan Miller. He’s author of the New York Times best-selling books "48 Days To The Work You Love", "No More Dreaded Mondays", and "Wisdom Meets Passion". He also hosts the top ranked career podcast "48 Days to the Work You Love Internet Radio Show". ANALYSIS The clip at the beginning of this episode sets up the interview. We get inspired with just a few sentences. We also end with a question, which opens the loop. The guest ends with, "What am I going to find if I just re-direct a little bit in terms of a new opportunity?" That's what the episode is all about. The voiceover part of the intro tells us what the podcast is all about. "Each week we bring you an interesting person to help you get inspired, shift your perspectives on money and achieve incredible things. From making it to giving it away, inspired money means making a difference, creating something bigger than oneself, and maybe, just maybe, making the world a better place." We know what we're going to get. When you create your intro, tell your listener how they will be better after listening to an episode. What's in it for me? This intro does exactly that. Andy then introduces Dan. He gives us just enough to find his guest credible. He has written a few New York Times bestselling books and he hosts an online radio show. I'm good with that. I'll listen. The introduction of your guest only needs to provide your listener with enough information to make them care and want to stick around for more. It doesn't matter that Dan is a career coach or that he has started multiple businesses. Just give us enough to want more. SCREW THE NINE TO FIVE The next show is "Screw The Nine To Five" with Jill and Josh Stanton. (Clip) Your mission is to pay back how much you spent on ads. I’m getting all these customers coming in. Now, I’m building a customer list. And then you have a flagship program or one-on-one coaching and it’s so much easier to upgrade an already existing customer than it is the first acquiring of them. Yeah. Right? Once you get them in the door and you rock their world they’re going to be like, "This guy is awesome. I wonder what else they have." (Voiceover) Warning. This podcast may cause you to quit your job, and start a business. What’s up? We're Jill and Josh Stanton. And we help people quit their jobs. Right now you’re joined by tens of thousands of up-and-coming entrepreneurs all around the world who are using their commute to redefine their lives and build a business online. So if you’re ready to create the financial freedom, time freedom, location freedom and personal freedom you crave so you can do what you want when you want, then turn up the volume and let’s do this thing. This is the "Screw the 9 to 5" podcast. (Host) Hey! Welcome back to another episode of the "Screw The Nine to Five" podcast. Today we are jammin' on if we were to start all over again ... no audience, no revenue, none of the things ... how would we build this business from scratch? ANALYSIS The clip at the beginning of this show does very little for me. At the end of the full opening, we know the episode is about "if we had to do it all over again, what would we do?" The intro clip is all about, "Your mission is to pay back how much you spent on ads" or "getting a customer is harder than keeping a customer." What does that have to do with anything? It doesn't open a loop or create any intrigue. Be sure to tease effectively. Now, I do love their voiceover intro. "Warning" is a great way to start. "You are joined by tens of thousands" shows social proof. They talk all about the life I want to create. This is all perfect. They are in my shoes and telling me the benefit. When Jill comes back in with "Today we're jammin' on starting over again", you get a sense of how she rolls. She jumps right into the content. The momentum is great. The intro overall is nice and short. It would be much stronger if they had just used a more effective clip at the beginning. If you've ever buried your dreams in an attempt to be “practical” or “realistic,” Dan will show you how embracing those very dreams is the most practical way to enjoy life and achieve the success you're looking for. The Power of The Mastermind Group Back in 1935, in Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill wrote that a Mastermind group was the one essential behind every successful person he interviewed! And yet with that information having been read by most anyone serious about their success, very few people take the initiative to find or create their own Mastermind team. You may have goals, strategies and tactics for achieving a high level of success, but without a Mastermind group you're polishing a Ferrari with no gas in the tank. How would you like to have your own team of hand-picked advisors committed to your personal success? What could you do with expert advice, wise counsel, and a network of successful people at your finger-tips? You know, the hottest business principle today is “collaboration” not “competition.” What could you do with the collaboration of your own mastermind group? I don't know anyone who has become extraordinarily successful who has not utilized the principle of the mastermind group. Whether you're a small business owner, a personal growth seeker, a consultant, a free-lanceworker, a real estate agent, an artist or a corporate employee, you can benefit from being part of a Mastermind Group. Being part of aMastermind Group is like having your own board of directors. Except there's no hidden agenda – everyone is openly committed to the success of the other members. In this course you'll discover Why you Need a Mastermind Group? How Do I Start a Mastermind Group? Selecting the Members of your Group How Do I Run a Mastermind Group? These are short segments designed to give you the essentials and get you up and running with your own Mastermind group immediately. Success doesn't require that we're born in the right place, have the right IQ or have the right degree – but it does require that we take the right action. Just click the image right here to the right of this video to start your right action now.

A listener writes:  “I have a near hatred towards people that talk about enjoying their lives and their work. Work seems to be a burden for the whole lot of us. Nothing that has purpose makes a profit, and nothing that makes a profit has purpose.  If there are any exceptions to that, I would like to know.  To make money, you have to do something meaningless at best. Am I missing something?” In this episode Dan unpacks these very common questions. Episode #624 August 10, 2018 Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you're listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: 1. I have a near hatred towards people that talk about enjoying their lives and their work 2. Work seems to be a burden for the whole lot of us, with the only driving hope being the idea of more money “one day”. 3. Nothing that has purpose makes a profit, and nothing that makes a profit has purpose. 4. To make money, you have to do something meaningless at best. Quotation: “To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if that moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.” ― Winston S. Churchill Call to Action – What are you doing now that blends passion, talent and money? Notes: Dan shares a Bible passage from Ecclesiastes 2:17-23 that is eerily similar to this listener's question. As Dan found out more about this listener, he is 42, married with two kids, a strong Christian and does high-end residential remodeling and construction. Dan shares the trifecta of Vocation, Career and Job. Vocation is the largest component and the element you want to identify first. It is what you want to accomplish. Career is a subset of vocation and job is the smallest component. Dan shares an example of his cousin who is very successful in the construction industry and has been able to use that as the fuel for his passion and purpose of flying supplies to Haiti. He also shares his own experiences as a used car salesman and how he found purpose and passion in that work. Dan shares his own purpose statement and some of the ways he aligns that to his passion. For example, creating a library of books about finding work you love for a welfare to work organization in Kansas City. The story of Steve Askinosie, a criminal defense attorney who found his passion by visiting local hospitals. Find his book: Meaningful Work here. Questions to ask yourself to discover your passion (from Wisdom Meets Passion). The Three Legged Stool: Passion, Talent and Money. Your sweet spot is where those three things come together. Dan shares a recent example of a client who lost his job and shared with him his love of golf clubs. He's now exploring expanding his “side job” of buying and selling golf clubs into a job he loves. On today’s show, I’m switching things up a bit. It’s Father’s Day, and I wanted to pay homage to my father, Dan Miller. I recognize how blessed we are to have such a close relationship. I know how rare and beautiful that is. My father has greatly influenced my life in so many ways. And he continues to every day. As I write this, I’m heading out the door to go to the U2 concert with him. I know it’ll be an epic experience for us both. The tagline for Inipi Radio is "Let your life speak", which comes from the Quaker philosophy. And it was my father that taught that to me, and lived by example. It’s a great honor to share some stories from our journey, and to reflect back on the powerful influence he’s had on my life. Happy Father’s Day, Dad! HIGHLIGHTS My father, Dan Miller, New York Times best-selling author, grew up in an Old Order Mennonite family and culture. Rather than completing his thesis for the Ph.D. program at Oxford, he chose to write a book that has now sold over 1.2 Million copies and has been translated into almost ten different languages. Even though my brother and father and I all raced at the expert level in BMX (for my whole childhood), we were not raised in a competitive environment. We were taught to appreciate the journey and have fun and not to think about winning or losing. The fact that we have to work is often portrayed as a curse of man, but my father has taught us that work is an opportunity to bring joy and purpose into your life. My parents always fostered a perspective founded in a deep reverence for the interconnectedness of humanity. Everyone was valued equally, regardless of race, creed, economics, etc. My father came from a very conservative, pragmatic culture. Yet when I had an imaginary friend (for much of my childhood) that was very, very real to me, he made space for that. My parents even set a table setting for her at the dinner table. Dad has a rough entrepreneurial journey, but it gave him the understanding and foundation to teach others how to navigate that space now. In the 80s, he had a fitness center that went south. He lost everything in the auction where it was sold. He was advised to go bankrupt, but he couldn’t stomach hurting all those small businesses that he owed. He always takes the high road. His word is his bond. My father was never a dictator. He never raised his voice. He always chooses to lead by example. To set the tone. And to lead more by inspiration than anything else. He has always taught us (kids) to dream big. To live like Peter Pan. He teaches that we either believe we can or believe we can’t, and either way, we’re going to be right. “There are two lasting gifts you can give your children. One is roots. The other is wings.” Life is always presenting us with opportunities to learn. Always be teachable. My father and I co-wrote a book together, called Wisdom Meets Passion. It was a beautiful experience that I’m forever grateful for. I’m also grateful that my father for inspiring me to create this podcast. One thing my father and I have always been equally passionate about is…that U2 is the greatest band in the world. And Bono has always been our mutual hero. Still is. (We’re going to see U2 in concert tonight!)    BEST MOMENTS Let your life speak. If you want to be kind, let your life speak kindness. If you want to be peace, let your life speak peace.   RESOURCES www.48days.com www.48days.net Wisdom Meets Passion

Today on the podcast we have Jared Angaza joining us. Jared and I was introduced a few weeks ago and since then, I have to say, he is somebody I would consider a friend. We just hit it off right off the bat and I think when you hear this episode you'll know why. Jared is a strategist and a philanthropist, and has created strategies, brands, and campaigns and events for 20 years. The thing that is super cool about Jared is that he really believes in creating brands with soul. He feels strongly that there should be something called “conscious philanthropy” and “brand alchemy” present within every brand. He definitely takes this idea of brand and how to imagine the possibilities of identity and experience to a totally different level. Jared is also the coauthor of the book, Wisdom Meets Passion, that he wrote with his father and bestselling author, Dan Miller. Overall, Jared is super creative, he is a very interesting guy, who has traveled the world and I just loved talking to him. We have a mutual passion for authenticity, so we had a great discussion. Definitely have a listen, and let me know what you think.

Find Your Dream Job: Insider Tips for Finding Work, Advancing your Career, and Loving Your Job

Did you just spill your coffee all down the front of your shirt? Or, did you forget to turn the ringer off your phone before the interview started? Today’s guest expert, Dan Miller says the good thing about interview fails is that they are easily remedied. The number one thing Dan sees in interviewees, which hurt their chances at a position, is a lack of enthusiasm and energy. He says job seekers who want to show their enthusiasm should: Walk briskly Sit up straight Speak from their diaphragm Convey a lot of energy These actions show the interviewer that you have something to offer, and as an employee, you are someone who will do more than expected. If you are an introvert, you don’t need to change who you are naturally, but show a lot of energy during a job interview. Dan says job seekers should be prepared with a two-minute answer to the 20 most common interview questions. Interviewers want to know how a job candidate will handle a conflict or how they go about solving a problem. So, candidates should also prepare for a few behavioral questions. An interview is a time set aside by a company to see if a job candidate is right for their organization. On the flip side, an interview is a time set aside by a job seeker to see if a particular company is right for them. Interview Do’s and Don’ts: Do ask the interviewer about the company at the end of the interview. Don’t ask about the compensation for the job too quickly. Do send a thank you as a follow-up immediately after the interview. Do make yourself more memorable with a handwritten follow-up. Do bring every ounce of enthusiasm you can muster to the interview. Pro Tip — Preparation matters! Know the company’s mission statement and at least one thing about the person handling your interview before the interview starts. This week, special guest Dan Miller discusses the bold claims he has made about wisdom, passion, and finances in his new book, Wisdom Meets Passion, with Andy and AT. Dan’s new book is a “different kind of book”•    Dan is known as a “career guy,” but this book falls under a different category•    This book is about finding your passion and building a career around it•    It compares and contrasts Dan’s perspective with his son’s, who lives in KenyaThe crux of the book is wisdom meets passion•    They are trying to remind people that we have to have wisdom and passion no matter where we are•    One without the other is meaningless•    No matter how old you are, you can discover your wisdom and your passion and how to integrate the twoAndy thinks that the greatest book or product or song that somebody puts out is one where you don’t even have to know who the author or artist is to like it•    He thinks Ken’s book is one of those cases•    The book would work extremely well for companies across the country to give to their employees•    Companies need to understand that the younger generation wants to do something that is close to their heart and is something that they truly care about•    They don’t necessarily care as much about having a Mercedes in the drivewayDan and his son, Jared, have very different lifestyles, but they believe in exactly the same things•    That’s how we need to be as people•    We don’t need to be at odds with people of different generations, denominations, countries, and cultures•    If we understand each other’s hearts we will see that we want a lot of the same things, but we let a few ancillary things divide usThe book makes some bold claims, like “never get a job with benefits” and “hourly pay will make you poor”•    A friend of Ken’s who plays guitar professionally was told by his father to never get a job with benefits•    The meaning behind it was that safety nets will keep you from really pursuing your passion with everything you have•    In regard to hourly pay making you poor, Dan says that we shouldn’t listen to the conventional way of thinking that says you get paid a set amount one time every time you fulfill a task•    Instead, we should look for things that have no ceiling, unlimited upside•    We should look for something that we can do once and then get paid 10,000 times for it—there are ways to leverage your expertise that open the door to financial benefits most people never even think aboutDan’s book will be released in stores everywhere on August 28. You can pre-order the book now by clicking here. At 48Days.com, they will be introducing some special offers that you can also get. Questions for Listeners•    Are you living your passion?
