Judge Treviño, commissioners, thank you very much for allowing me the time to be here this morning. I know I don't have very much time so I'm going to jump right into this. The first thing that I wanted to start off with was safety. Safety is our number one concern with regards to community, with regards to our employees, and with regards to the environment. There's a number of things that we're doing. All people on site today and all people that will be working in operations have a mandate that if they see something unsafe, they have the obligation to stop work. So, if there's a maintenance person or a person mowing the lawn, if they see something unsafe, they can stop work. Additionally, all the tanks once are built are full containment tanks, meaning that if there was a rupture in the tank, there's enough space within the outer tank to hold 100% of the capacity of that tank. Additionally, LNG is not explosive. It's not propane, it's not butane. It's not stored under pressure. It's not volatile. It's not flammable in its liquid form. It's not corrosive, it's not toxic. So, we have all of that and we're building the facility to mitigate risk to the community, to mitigate risk to our employees and to the environment. When you look at LNG ships, these are some of the most robust machines on the planet. Editor's Note: The above commentary was provided by David Keane, senior vice president, policy and corporate affairs for NextDecade at a public hearing held by Cameron County Commissioners Court on June 4, 2024. Episode 121 Crosscurrents in Early Electronic Music of Canada, Part 2 Playlist Track Time Start Time Introduction –Thom Holmes 04:32 00:00 1. John Mills-Cockell, “On The Heath” from A Third Testament (1974 True North). John Mills-Cockell is a Canadian composer from Toronto who was a very early adopter of the original Moog Synthesizer. He was part of the multi-faceted and ground-breaking work with the avant garde/poetry group Intersystems in the late 1960s and then the group Syrinx. I became acquainted with John more recently and he told me that his original Moog modules, used for Intersystems, burned up in a fire and so he turned to the use of ARP instruments around 1971. I am featuring his synthesizer work from a couple of solo albums as a representative of the independent stream of electronic music artists from Canada. John has continued to produce works for and for his numerous works for radio, television, film, ballet, and stage, and he is still active. 02:30 04:32 2. John Mills-Cockell, “North African Gladiator” from A Third Testament (1974 True North). Produced, played, engineered, organ and synthesizer, John Mills Cockell. 04:08 07:00 3. John Mills-Cockell, “Collision” from Gateway (1977 Anubis Records ). Produced, played, engineered, organ and synthesizer, John Mills Cockell. 03:32 11:03 4. Alcides Lanza, “Eidesis IV For Wind Ensemble And Electronic Sounds” (1977) from McGill Wind Ensemble (1980 McGill University Records). This collection of contemporary Canadian works was released by McGill University's own label. This track is the only work with electronic sounds on the album, by Argentinean-born composer Lanza. Lanza studied music in Buena Aires, moved to Canada in 1971, and became Director of the Electronic Music Studio of McGill University in 1976. 11:20 14:34 5. Dennis Patrick, “Phantasy III (Excerpt)” (1977-78) from Dennis Patrick--Musical Portrait (1982 CAPAC). Another one of the 7” vinyl Musical Portrait series of Canadian artists, released by the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada, Limited (CAPAC). Completed in the Electronic Music Studio of the University of Toronto, where he was Director of the studio beginning around 1976. 04:53 25:48 6. Barry Truax, “Arras” (1980) from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). Truax represented the left coast of Canada, and worked with R. Murray Schafer beginning in 1973 on the World Soundscape Project. Several of the composers in this episode came from that same environment, mixing natural acoustic sounds with electroacoustic treatments. This work was made using four computer synthesized tracks. Truax became known for his computer compositions as well as soundscapes. 10:08 30:38 7. Canadian Electronic Ensemble, “Chaconne À Son Goût” from Canadian Electronic Ensemble (1981 Centrediscs). Performers, David Grimes, David Jaeger, James Montgomery, Larry Lake. Composed by David Grimes. The ensemble was founded in Toronto in 1971 by David Grimes, David Jaeger, Jim Montgomery and Larry Lake, "to promote the live performance of electronic music and thereby the composition of new repertoire for this medium." This is another nice example of music by independent artists working in Canada. 17:21 40:34 8. Dennis Patrick, “Metasuite” (1982) from Dennis Patrick--Musical Portrait (1982 CAPAC). Another one of the 7” vinyl Musical Portrait series of Canadian artists, released by the Composers, Authors and Publishers Association of Canada, Limited (CAPAC). Completed in the Electronic Music Studio of the University of Toronto, where he was Director of the studio beginning around 1976. 07:55 57:54 9. David Keane, “Aurora” (1985) from Aurora (1985 Cambridge Street Records). A work from a fellow author, David Keane who wrote a book called Tape Music Composition in 1981 (Oxford University Press). He was born in America but became a Canadian citizen in 1974. At the time of “Aurora” Keane was a professor of music theory and director of the electronic music studio at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, which I think he founded in 1970. The music was created to be played during a dance performance in which movement was seen through colored images projected on the dancers. The work was realized in the Queen's University Electroacoustic Music Facility. 10:17 1:05:48 10. Claude Schryer, “A Kindred Spirit” (1985) from Group Of The Electronic Music Studio - McGill University (1986 McGill University Records). Bass Clarinet, Yves Adam; Cello, Andras Weber; Composed and conducted by, Claude Schryer; Flute, Jill Rothberg; Guitar Daniel Desjardins; Percussion, Helen Barclay; Piano, Laurie Radford. Recorded at McGill University Recording Studios. This work is notable for its use of the Synclavier, a high-end digital synthesizer/sampler/workstation from the mid-1980s. 16:02 1:16:04 11. Bruno Degazio, “Heatnoise” (1987) from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). Degazio is a composer, researcher and film sound designer based in Ontario, Canada. “Heatnoise is one of a series of algorithmic compositions applying principles of fractal geometry to music.” It uses digital synthesis. 11:24 1:32:04 12. Hildegard Westerkamp, “Cricket Voice” (1987) from from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). A super accomplished sound ecologist, Westerhamp is best known today as the creator of many works of sound art that use natural acoustic environments. She also composed many tape works. This work is a “musical exploration of the cricket,” with a cricket sound recorded in Mexico. If you know crickets, you will note that this one is not Canadian. But the composer is and this work was produced at the Simon Fraser University in Vancouver where Westerkamp was teaching at the time. 11:09 1:43:18 13. Ann Southam, “Fluke Sound” (1989) from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). Southam is another female Canadian composer of note. Much of her career has been spent composing works for dance. She is from the Toronto area. This work is from a period when she was immersed in electroacoustic music. 10:22 1:54:13 14. Norma Beecroft, “Evocations: Images Of Canada (1992) (2003 Ovation Volume 3). In contrast to the earlier tape works of Beecroft featured in part 1 of this series, this is a purely digital composition. She used an Apple Macintosh, the program/sequencer Performer and a Roland D-70 synthesizer. Commissioned by the Music Department in Toronto of the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. with the purpose of utilizing their then new digital mixing facilities. The materials for this composition represent the many aspects of Canadian culture and was a statement around her concern for the “future of Canada as a unfied country.” 16:01 2:04:22 Opening background music: David Keane, “Lumina” (1988) from Anthologie De La Musique Canadienne / Anthology Of Canadian Music - Musique Électroacoustique; Electroacoustic Music (1990 Radio Canada International). For tenor voice and “digital tape recorder” to sample and manipulate the sound. Created in Keane's studio in Scarborough, Ontario. Voice, Richard Margison. 11:46 Opening and closing sequences voiced by Anne Benkovitz. Additional opening, closing, and other incidental music by Thom Holmes. BROWNSVILLE, Texas - David Keane, senior vice president for policy and corporate affairs for NextDecade, spoke to students about careers in the energy industry at Rally in the Valley 2.0.The networking event, hosted by the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation and held at the Brownsville Events Center, connected high school students from Brownsville ISD with prominent industry partners offering student internship opportunities. NextDecade owns Rio Grande LNG, which is building a liquefied natural gas export terminal at the Port of Brownsville. “This $18.4 billion project is the largest greenfield - and when I say Greenfield there's never been an industrial facility on this particular site - energy project financing in US history, highlighting the significant role that liquefied natural gas will play in the global energy transition now and for many years to come,” Keane said.“At full capacity, Rio Grande LNG will produce 27 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually, which is enough natural gas to heat 34 million homes a year.”“But what exactly is LNG?” Keane asked. “It is, essentially, cooled methane or natural gas, which is the same form of heat that you currently have if you have it in your house. Once liquefied, it is stored in specially designed tanks and transported on special ships to customers around the world.”Keane then discussed another of NextDecade's subsidiaries.Next Carbon Solutions aims to address carbon change concerns by capturing and sequestering carbon dioxide during the liquefaction process. CCS or carbon capture and sequestration is a revolutionary technology that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Keane said.“Rio Grande LNG, with the implementation of CCS, aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 90%. And we actually think we can get to about 95%. Through our proprietary CCS process we have obtained nine patents and are also in discussions with global companies to offer our CCS services globally.”Editor's Note: Go to the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service to read the full story. To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

Dr Jane Ough is a Senior Companion Animal Veterinarian at South Wairarapa Veterinary Services. Dr Jane's time and pathway to the veterinarian she is today is quite different from the usual career path of veterinarians. She's from the BVSc Massey class of 1982. Today, Dr Jane enjoys orthopaedic surgery especially mending broken farm dogs. Dr Ough became concerned about climate change when her two daughters were children. She gained a diploma in Environment and Sustainability when her children were little, through the Open Polytech in 2010. Dr Jane is a passionate conservationist. And I mean passionate! She and her partner Jeremy have retired two thirds of their small farm in the Wairarapa and covenanted it with the Queen Elizabeth II Trust. Working one day a week for QE2 for 2 years Dr Jane said improved her understanding of native forest regeneration. She now spends this day a week on her own covenant, and, working with the local catchment group, helped set up and is helping South Wairarapa Veterinary Services take Climate Crisis Action to run a more sustainable business. Otherwise, let’s dive into Part 3 now (and check resources for more helpful links and the transcript to this episode). SHOW NOTES: In November, 2008, we went through The Gap storms. A big Silky Oak fell on our roof and cracked it open. Rain poured in through the ceiling and window heads, over furniture and rugs, and through the timber floorboards into the garage below. A few days later, heavy rains came again, and flooded the home. Then ensued a 13 month battle with our insurer debating what was ‘flood damage’, what was ‘water damage’, what was damage made by a ‘storm-created opening’. We finally settled for 5X what they initially offered … it was the difference between $20,000 and $100,000. The stress was beyond anything I’d experienced. We really felt each step was an attempt to wear us down and settle for what we were being offered. My hubby and I both seemed to alternate being stubborn and not wanting to back down, so we just kept going. David Keane started Solve My Claim in 2014 after realising people in this situation often had nowhere to turn. For David, this is about levelling the playing field, and about providing social justice at times when people really need it. Having worked inside the insurance industry for so many years, David got fed up with seeing it unfairly handle people’s claims, and then what that would mean for the long term livelihood and lifestyle of those impacted. In an industry full of jargon and specific processes, it can be unnerving for anyone tackling it for the first time, especially when they have lost their entire home and belongings. And so, Solve My Claim provides support and fairness for those struggling with their insurance claims. They use their knowledge of how insurance policies work to argue for those making claims. And they’ve achieved more than $35 million worth of increased claim settlements in the past 3 years alone. Solve My Claim provides expert support and assistance to anyone struggling with their insurance claims. Their main office is in Alice Springs, and they assist with claims across the whole nation of Australia. In Part 3 of our conversation, David will help us understand some specifics about your insurance policy so you know what you’re entitled to. And what to do about getting independent information to check what you’re being offered is fair. And, we discuss the steps straight after you’re dealing with damage and loss, so you can notify your insurer as required PLUS get you ducks in a row as well. So, let’s hear more. Hello! In this episode, I’m kicking off a 3-part episode conversation with David Keane from Solve My Claim. Solve my Claim provides expert support and assistance to anyone struggling with their insurance claims. And having gone through this personally, I’m so glad to introduce David Keane to you. If you ever need to purchase insurance for your home, or need to make a claim on your policy, what David will be sharing is essential knowledge so you don’t get caught out. David is an experienced and wise voice to help you navigate what can seem confusing. And especially during the stressful time of making a claim, this is such helpful guidance. So, let’s dive in (and check resources for more helpful links and the transcript to this episode). SHOW NOTES: David is the Director of Solve My Claim, and he has been involved in the insurance industry for more than 24 years. During this time, he was constantly amazed at how many people came to him with insurance problems, complaints, disputes and claims problems. In every instance, he was able to resolve those claims. He realised that there was nowhere for these people to turn, and that realisation started a process that resulted in the creation of Solve My Claim in 2014. Many people feel disempowered when making an insurance claim, because the company has a team of experts acting for them, and you are all on your own. Well not any longer! Solve My Claim is levelling the playing field, and ensuring that you have the best possible opportunity to solve your claim. Personally, and I’ll share more about this in a future episode, my husband and I once spent 13 months battling our insurance company to secure our claim. During the storms that went through The Gap in November, 2008, our home suffered a fair amount of damage including that from a large Silky Oak tree that fell on the house. After dealing with our insurer, and then their underwriter, and then the Ombudsman, we finally received a settlement that was over 5 times the initial claim offer; an amount actually reflected the true value of loss and damage. Which was a great result, however all up, it was 13 months of stress and battle, and needed huge determination and tenacity. A massive folder thick with letters and schedules and quotes. I was pregnant and had our 2nd bub during this time. After the storm, we were left with one room in the house that was liveable. We were also mid renovation, and so we were having to fix up the damage to the house at our own expense as well. If Solve My Claim had existed, I would have used them in a heartbeat. With the recent bushfires in Australia, and then also other significant weather events such as hail storms and flooding, many homeowners are now dealing with how to move on, and navigate the insurance process to enable them to rebuild and restore some normalcy to their lives. If this is your situation, I am so sorry you’ve had to go through this. David Keane has helped many homeowners get much better outcomes from their insurers and be in a better position to plan their recovery. In fact, they’ve achieved more than $35 million worth of increased claim settlements in the last 3 years. In Part 1 of our conversation, you'll hear why Solve My Claim exists, some specific things to know about insurance claims involving total loss and your sum insured, and specific policy inclusions that may give you extra scope (such as additional benefits clauses etc). And also how to assess early cash settlements being offered. So, let’s hear more. Be sure to subscribe to this season, and also head to Undercover Architect’s YouTube Channelfor video interviews. This episode is a return of the Great Famine Series. Focusing on the town of Clogheen in South Tipperary, this two part episode follows the lives of three individuals Robert Davis, David Keane and Richard Burke. Their stories delve into the fascinating yet often violent struggle for survival in Ireland during the Great Famine. While the show focuses on Clogheen the accounts are reflective of wider experiences. The podcasts also examines controversial topics such as the export of food and the violent resistence to those exports. I also reveal stories of those who profited during the famine and try to answer why many Irish people who seemed like decent people continued to export food in the midst of the famine. The show includes dozens of primary sources including two previously unpublished letters written from Clogheen and Boston giving a first hand perspective of what life for Irish people was like in the 1840s. I would like to thank Ted Reilly and Martin Nutty for their help in New York without whom this episode would not have been possible.
