This week we have a look at the 1977 film Day of the Animals. This is Episode #425! Day of the Animals (re-released as Something Is Out There) is a 1977 American natural horror film directed by William Girdler, based on a story by producer Edward L. Montoro. The film reunited Girdler and Montoro with stars Christopher George and Richard Jaeckel from the previous year's Grizzly. It co-stars Lynda Day George and Leslie Nielsen.Day of the Animals tells the story of a psychosis brought on by depletion of the Earth's ozone layer, affecting all animals at high altitudes. A group of hapless hikers must survive the animal onslaught and make their way to safety, even as the psychosis turns them against each other.

Whether it was one of his many appearances on television, or one of the many genre films he did in the late 70's and early 80's, Christopher George left an indelible mark in television and film.  In much the same way that actor Robert Forster brought a believable everyman quality to a variety of roles, Christopher George was able to slip comfortably from drama to action and horror in a way that made him relatable, and the material believable.  He was a rugged, handsome, charismatic actor who elevated every project he appeared in.  He should be held in the same regard as actors like Roy Scheider, Robert Forster and Lance Henriksen.  Though his body of work included war films, comedies, sci-fi and action, for episode #93 we will focus on the prison drama, nature-run-amok, vigilante justice, zombie apocalypse, classic slasher, ninja and occult films he did from 1973-1983.  Whether you're new to his work, or a long-time admirer, please join My Haunted Head in a celebration of the films of Christopher George.

This is a throw-back, one of our very early episodes, originally recorded around Halloween 2019.  We review this 1977 “classic” which at the time was the first animal-themed horror movie for the podcast.  But we’ve grown up and if you are familiar with our podcast, you might notice how the show has evolved (devolved?).  But there are a lot of new fresh drops in this episode.  I hope you know what drops are.  Maybe you call them stingers.  In any event, they were all made recently and we are excited about them.  But who cares about the drops?  I know that you, the faithful listener, are here for the animals.  Do we deliver?  Well if you consider Leslie Nielsen shirtless in the rain to be an animal, then we definitely talk about animals in this episode.  There is lots of film history to explore here, and Simon does not hold back.  We start to heat up about half-way through as we realize how much we dislike yet love this terrible awesome movie.  We discuss what is potentially problematic in the film, and Simon & Mike educate about women’s rights.  This episode might be for the hardcore cinemanimal fans.  Simon accuses us of being “low energy” towards the end.  We are not “low energy”.  Or maybe we are.  You decide.  The most striking thing about this episode is I’m not sure if we hate this movie or love it.  Or maybe we just hate ourselves?  Maybe we hate you?  It’s really hard to be sure of anything after watching this movie.  As always, we have an email address: cinemanimals@gmail.com

The Damn Dirty Geeks resume our delightful discussion with actor/stuntman Bobby Porter, talking more about his work in BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES, two characters in the APES TV series, and many more films and shows across his continuing career. Bobby reveals two very fun stories about his unplanned public appearances in his APES character makeup created hilarious results, including a live stage play "crossover" with BATTLE and Shakespeare.  We also preview the upcoming documentary MAKING APES: THE ARTISTS WHO CHANGED FILM, starring makeup effects artist Tom Burman, actors Bobby Porter and Lou Wagner, and directed by William Conlin. More Halloween goodness! This week we talk about the films The Lords or Salem, Life, Day Of The Animals, The Fly (1986) and From Beyond The Grave.

Another 1970s animal attack feature, Day of the Animals is full of corniness and surprises. "If there's a god left to believe in...you've made a jackass out of me for years!", exclaims an enraged Leslie Nielsen in one of the film's most outrageous moments. The Naked Gun star plays an ad man who, along with a bunch of other tourists, is trekking through the California woods with some tour guides. Unfortunately for them, but fortunately for us, there's a problem with the ozone layer and animals are being affected. There are lots of foreboding shots of predatory animals. We love nature run amok and this one is pretty good. There's a few inventive kills, a couple of true surprises, and good (well, maybe not so good, they are inexplicably attacking, after all) -natured silliness all around.

GSR returns for the beginning of our long awaited Phantasm retrospective. Not only that, but it's also the start of our nature gone amok series. Podcast goddess Jamie Jenkins (Devour The Podcast)returns once again as we go over DAY OF THE ANIMALS, and PHANTASM. As usual it was a damn good time. Thank you again for all the support.
