Tired of the billable hour grind? It's possible to run a lucrative practice serving your ideal business clients in just 10 hours a week. Tune in as Ali interviews two powerhouse lawyers - AJ and Denise - who broke free from the “Big Law” burnout by niching down to serve select entrepreneur clients at high monthly retainers. Key Takeaways: Strategic Niche Focus: niching down opens the door to become a coordinated advisor guiding all your clients' legal, financial, insurance, and tax needs and move beyond just documents to provide the kind of holistic planning and protection today's top business owners crave but are difficult to find. Effective Client Acquisition: Denise shares her approach of attending high-ticket events to connect with potential clients, offering initial free services to demonstrate her value. AJ discusses leveraging personal and professional networks to establish connections with potential clients who require sophisticated estate planning. Innovative Retainer Models: Gosnell utilizes a retainer-based model where she acts almost as an in-house counsel for her clients, offering them quick and effective legal solutions. Olofsky integrates estate planning with business growth strategies, helping clients prepare for future transitions and ensuring their legal needs are met as they evolve. Building Trust through Generosity: Denise's strategy of initially offering free services to potential high-value clients showcased her expertise and built trust, eventually leading to lucrative, ongoing engagements. Both attorneys emphasize the importance of proactive service and being readily available to address urgent client needs, reinforcing client trust and satisfaction. This episode is a treasure trove of insights for any legal professional aspiring to niche specialization or seeking to innovate their practice. Denise Gosnell and AJ Olofsky exemplify how targeted services, combined with a client-centric approach, can lead to a fulfilling and profitable legal career. Whether you are a seasoned attorney or just starting out, their stories provide inspiration and actionable strategies that can be adapted to your own legal practice. 05:35 AJ talks about his background, when his career started, balancing multiple roles and responsibilities that led to exploring a new business opportunity. 11:05 Denise shares her professional struggles before meeting Ali and how Ali changed her life after one conversation. 13:06 AJ explains the importance of specializing in a particular area, which for him is estate planning for business owners with specific revenue ranges, emphasizing how this specialization makes client acquisition and service delivery more efficient. 26:37 Denise shares her initial method for gaining clients by attending events, offering free legal services, and investing significant money for access, which developed trust and led to high-value, long-term client relationships. 33:52 Denise shares insights on maintaining high levels of client service, including the importance of availability through personalized communication methods like texting, to solve client issues promptly and effectively.

Amazon Neptune, the managed graph database service by AWS, makes analytics faster and more agile while introducing a vision aiming to simplify graph databases. It's not every day that you hear product leads questioning the utility of their own products. Brad Beebe, the general manager of Amazon Neptune, was all serious when he said that most customers don't actually want a graph database. However, that statement needs contextualization. If Bebee had meant that in the literal sense, the team himself and Amazon Neptune Principal Product Manager Denise Gosnell lead would not have bothered developing and releasing a brand new analytics engine for their customers. We caught up with Bebee and Gosnell to discuss Amazon Neptune new features and the broader vision. We cover where Amazon Neptune fits in the AWS vision of data management, and how the new analytics engine provides a single service for graph workloads, high performance for graph analytic queries and graph algorithms, and vector store and search capabilities for Generative AI applications. We also share insights on the One Graph vision, the road from serverless to One Graph via HPC, as well as vectors and Graph AI. But life wasn’t always like this for Denise. She used to be a workaholic who worked 70-80 per hours per week, until a house fire and some emergency surgeries gave her an attitude adjustment about the importance of living life in the “now”. Finding connections between data and the entities that they represent is a complex problem. Graph data models and the applications built on top of them are perfect for representing relationships and finding emergent structures in your information. In this episode Denise Gosnell and Matthias Broecheler discuss their recent book, the Practitioner's Guide To Graph Data, including the fundamental principles that you need to know about graph structures, the current state of graph support in database engines, tooling, and query languages, as well as useful tips on potential pitfalls when putting them into production. This was an informative and enlightening conversation with two experts on graph data applications that will help you start on the right track in your own projects.
Welcome to The New Stack Context, a podcast where we discuss the latest news and perspectives in the world of cloud native computing. For this week's episode, we spoke with Denise Gosnell, chief data officer at Datastax, who is a co-author of the O'Reilly book “A Practitioner's Guide to Graph Data.” She also graciously wrote a post for us explaining why graph databases are gaining traction in the enterprise. TNS editorial and marketing director Libby Clark hosted this episode, alongside TNS senior editor Richard MacManus, and TNS managing editor Joab Jackson. Graph database systems differ from the standard relational (SQL) kind in that they are engineered to more easily capture the relations across different entities. “When you're looking at your databases, graph databases allow you to model your data more efficiently by using relationships,” Gosnell said. You could capture that relationship information through a series of database joins of separate tables, but eventually, the complexity of this approach would make it prohibitive. “When you look at the full end-to-end complexity for using it in an application or maintaining your code, or updating edges, graph databases are going to make that a lot easier for the full lifecycle and maintenance of that application,” she said.

One great way to get ahead in your career is to make good bets on what technologies are going to become important in the future, and to invest time in learning them. If that sounds like something you want to do, then you should definitely be paying attention to graph databases. Graph databases aren’t exactly new, but they’ve become increasingly important as graph data (data that describe interconnected networks of things) has become more widely available than ever. Social media, supply chains, mobile device tracking, economics and many more fields are generating more graph data than ever before, and buried in these datasets are potential solutions for many of our biggest problems. That’s why I was so excited to speak with Denise Gosnell and Matthias Broecheler, respectively the Chief Data Officer and Chief Technologist at DataStax, a company specialized in solving data engineering problems for enterprises. Apart from their extensive experience working with graph databases at DataStax, and Denise and Matthias have also recently written a book called The Practitioner’s Guide to Graph Data, and were kind enough to make the time for a discussion about the basics of data engineering and graph data for this episode of the Towards Data Science Podcast.

This particular podcast covers the material in Chapter 3 of my new book “Statistical Machine Learning: A unified framework” with expected publication date May 2020. In this episode we discuss Chapter 3 of my new book which discusses how to formally define machine learning algorithms. Briefly, a learning machine is viewed as a dynamical system that is minimizing an objective function. In addition, the knowledge structure of the learning machine is interpreted as a preference relation graph which is implicitly specified by the objective function. In addition, this week we include in our book review section a new book titled “The Practioner’s Guide to Graph Data” by Denise Gosnell and Matthias Broecheler. Have you ever noticed what happens when it is just a few days before you head out for vacation? If you are like most people, you go into "clear the desk" mode. Things get done. You become hyper-efficient. Why does that happen right before a vacation? Because it HAS to get done. You want to leave with nothing hanging. So, nothing gets in your way. What if there was a "hack" that could get you that effect the rest of the time? Would that let you work less... and still get the same amount done? Denise Gosnell is a 3x successful entrepreneur. As a successful attorney and entrepreneur, Denise had met all of her (financial) goals. But when her house went up in flames... she realized that her (life) goals were not where she wanted them. Sure, she had stuff... she had resources. But she didn't have the life she wanted. In fact, she didn't have time for it. Until she made a shift. Using business strategy and planning, productivity hacking, and prioritizing, Denise found she could be MORE successful with LESS time taken up by work. And now, Denise shares that with others... whether you want more time from work or from home, you can find it, along with more life satisfaction, by tapping into the Vacation Effect. Denise's choice for STEM and maths was a no brainer, but the rest of the journey wasn't as clear. There were many forks along the way. Denise first told us about her maths studies and how she inadvertedly discovered graphs theory. She described how her aversion for a focus on teaching led her to digging deeper into the graphs field that became the subject of her PhD. We the talked about moving from academia to the industry. Denise told us about her job at the startup PokitDok and how it felt to combine the rigor or data science with the willingness to move fast of the startup world. We brushed over her experience as an evangelist. And finally we talked about DataStax and Denise's role working on OpenSource, with Cassandra, the NoSQL movement and some of the most brilliant minds in the graph theory space. Denise finished by giving us two advices: don't be afraid to fail, and trust yourself! Here are the links of the show:https://www.twitter.com/DeniseKGosnellhttps://github.com/denisekgosnellGraph Technology Makes Teams More Productive https://medium.com/@denisekgosnell/graph-technology-makes-teams-more-productive-ebc549aa45fbGraph Book https://github.com/datastax/graph-bookThe Practitioner's Guide to Graph Data http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920205746.doMatthias Broecheler https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthiasbroechelerTed Tanner https://twitter.com/tctjrTeresa Haynes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teresa_W._HaynesCreditsMusic Aye by Yung Kartz is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 License.Your hostSoftware Developer‘s Journey is hosted and produced by Timothée (Tim) Bourguignon, a crazy frenchman living in Germany who dedicated his life to helping others learn & grow. What does Justin Bieber have to do with our relationships to, well, anything? If nothing else, his staggering 105.8 million followers on Twitter (at the time of this conversation) is a real challenge for data scientists. If you wanted to know how The Bieb's assemblage relates to him and one another, you could never achieve it with an entity-first relationship model — you know, columns, rows and spreadsheets, or, as Wikipedia calls it, “a simple relational database implementation, each row of a table represents one instance of an entity type, and each field in a table represents an attribute type.” If you really want to begin to understand the reasoning behind The Beib's broad fanbase, you'd need to organize data relationship-first. This is just one of the real-world examples Dr. Denise Gosnell offered regarding the importance of graph databases and the tech behind them that is shifting how we think about and organize data. The head of global Graph practice at DataStax and one of the world's foremost researchers on graph theory, graph algorithms, graph databases, and applications of graph data across all industry verticals offered more business use cases as well, including the interrelatedness of your primary and secondary LinkedIn connections and the growing popularity of smart meters.
