In this special, short, interim episode, I reflect on my experience launching this podcast just a few months ago. I talk about the inspiration behind the 'Overview Effect' and what that means, and I give an example of taking the bigger picture perspective around Christmas, and the origins and meaning of Christmas (is it the 'birth of Christ' or much, much more??) I then reflect on the incredible guests I've had on the show so far, and give a brief glimpse into some VERY exciting stuff planned for 2021. Thank you to everyone for listening and supporting the show so far this year. It's been such a fun project to launch; it's still very early days, and I really look forward to bringing you some great content in the new year. Cheers!

Ep #231 - This week on the podcast, I'm joined by Denise Gosnell, a serial entrepreneur, business strategist, productivity hacker, attorney, author, and real estate investor. Denise owns 3 companies: a coaching/training company, a law firm, and a real estate company. Through her company, The Vacation Effect, Inc. (www.vacationeffect.com), Denise helps busy entrepreneurs learn how to use unconventional scheduling and growth strategies to grow their business even faster by working up to 40% less. In fact, those same strategies are what allow Denise to work an average of 3 days per week running her 3 companies in 3 different industries, while having 2 business days per week for any creative or other pursuits she desires. But life wasn’t always like this for Denise. She used to be a workaholic who worked 70-80 per hours per week, until a house fire and some emergency surgeries gave her an attitude adjustment about the importance of living life in the “now”. She then stumbled onto the secret of what she now calls “Growth By Subtraction” after those incidents. Denise is an 8-time author and has been featured in dozens of media outlets over the years, from television, radio, newspaper, magazines, blogs, and more. She also has a new book coming out in 2020 called “The Vacation Effect”. In this week's interview, we go into the principles of 'The Vacation Effect' and how entrepreneurs can get back their time by implementing a few key strategies to shift their focus and priorities. This is a must listen for any business owners or professionals that want to get more done in less time. Don't miss this powerful interview with Denise Gosnell. MultimediaLIVE — President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Sunday night that SA would not go back to a hard lockdown.Speaking during a national address, Ramaphosa said that going back to a level 4 or level 5 lockdown "would not necessarily achieve a significant reduction in the rate of transmission". Also, he said, this could "come at a great and extraordinary economic cost, putting more livelihoods at risk and potentially causing long lasting social harm". "Cabinet has decided that the country will remain at alert level 3 at this stage, but that we should however strengthen the enforcement of existing regulations," he said.
On this episode, I speak with Professor Anu Bradford of Columbia Law School about the subject of her new book, The Brussels Effect. This is the idea that the EU wields far more influence on global affairs than might first seem the case.In our discussion, we talk about how this happens, why it isn't obvious to people and what it means for all of us; whether you're living in Brexited Britain or in a country that seems so distant from the EU, that they can't possibly be influencing your life. Or can they? Spoiler alert: they really can. We also look at whether that's intended. We then explore her new area of research, regulating the Internet. If you're thinking, this doesn't sound much like a Human Risk topic, think again. This is about how our perception of something (in this case the influence of the EU) can be completely wrong. Often when we make poor decisions, it is because we've misunderstood what's going on.You can find out more about Anu's research here: https://www.law.columbia.edu/faculty/anu-bradford and explore her book here: https://global.oup.com/academic/product/the-brussels-effect-9780190088583?cc=gb&lang=en&

When Asma Khan came to England in the early 90s, she couldn't boil an egg. Homesickness would change that - she went back to Calcutta intent on learning the recipes she grew up with so she could recreate them back in the UK and bring a bit of India back with her. In this episode of Get Back in The Kitchen, Asma reveals all - her rise to international fame and why she will never be quiet when confronted by sexism, or any prejudice whatsoever.Fast-forward nearly 30 years from when she first arrived here, she is a doyenne of the British restaurant scene. She began a supperclub, which grew into a pub residency in Soho. When a restaurant reviewer gave her a glowing write-up, the residency took off. Her restaurant came later. Darjeeling Express was already doing well when the producers of Netflix's hit show Chef's Table got in touch. The rest is history. Now Asma leads something of a double-life. When not at the restaurant pass, she mixes with celebrities who are keen to try her food - from Lupita Nyong'o to Queer Eye's Antoni and Keira Knightley. And she has also become a vocal campaigner for women's rights - visiting a cafe run by Yazidi women in Iraq to mark her 50th birthday, and berating out-dated male chefs including Marco Pierre White and Heston Blumenthal for their sexism. Get Back In The Kitchen is a podcast about women in food. It celebrates everyone from those running world-famous kitchens to those providing brilliant food on a smaller scale. it also looks at issues facing women working in food. It's run by Melissa Thompson, a journalist-turned-pop up cook, who now runs food & recipe project Fowl Mouths Food. You can follow her at @fowlmouthsfood and the podcast at @getbackinthekitchen.
They share the same name as a former fiery footballer from Cork and the band prove that like Keano they aren't afraid to tackle the biggest subjects. Their latest album is no different. 'Cause and Effect' is out tomorrow (September 20th) and it has been inspired by among many other things the break-up of band member Tim's marriage. Tim found his life falling apart and from the ashes had written an album’s worth of incredibly personal songs fueled by humour as well as pain. It's just one of the subjects Tom spoke to Fergal about including their enduring relationship with Coldplay, and being the inspiration for Lewis Capaldi's early long locks look! It is their 5th studio album. Their 4 previous albums have all entered the UK charts at number 1 and accumulated sales of over 13m worldwide and 2.6 billion streams. Wow. Can they make it a fifth number one. We'll see tomorrow. It we get all worked up when celebrities behave a way we don't agree with, we get all worked up. Why? They have the right 2 think however & do whatever they want. Part of this reason appears due 2 folks transferring their lives into these celebrities from artists to athletes. Their lives serve as distractions 2 what we need 2 work on in our lives. Peace!

The first in what will ultimately be two podcasts sharing portions of a trucking-insights panel held at Truckstop.com's third Connected user conference, held earlier this week in Dallas. Insights on rates growth post-ELD mandate, economic conditions and just when we might look out for a downturn, automation in trucking and brokerage and much more were on offer from Tucker Company Worldwide broker Jeff Tucker, Truckstop.com Chief Economist Noel Perry, and Stifel's John Larkin. This edition features some occasionally diverging thoughts on opportunities and dilemmas for brokers and small carriers when it comes to the “Amazon effect” we've written about from time to time, in food and retail in particular, with tightened delivery windows and lead times on loads offering opportunities to truly differentiate onself from a service perspective.
About six thousand people in the UK lose a leg every year from amputations due to vascular problems, trauma and disease. Others are born without limbs. Standard prosthetic knees often meant frequent falls and stumbles as well as the need to use two sticks. But microprocessor power is set to change all that. A new generation of intelligent joints is now available for the first time on the NHS in England - you can already get them in Scotland and Northern Ireland - and they adjust the knee stiffness to match the individual's weight, gait and activity and they even have anti-stumble software. Dr Mark Porter joins Dr Imad Sedki, consultant in rehabilitation medicine at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore at a retrofitting clinic, where patients like Naitik Patel are fitted with these new smart knees. Almost a decade ago, researchers in Scotland coined the term "The Glasgow Effect" after they exposed the shocking fact that premature deaths were 30% higher in Scotland's biggest city compared with cities with similar histories like Liverpool and Manchester. Since then studies have highlighted a toxic combination of social, political and economic decisions which adversely affected the health of Glaswegians. Sir Harry Burns, the former Chief Medical Officer for Scotland, now Professor of Global Public Health at the University of Strathclyde, talks to Mark about why the phrase "The Glasgow Effect" has fallen out of favour and what he thinks should be done to address continuing health inequality. Glasgow - in fact the UK as a whole - has one of the highest rates in the world of mesothelioma, a cancer which attacks the lining of the lung and which is directly linked to the breathing in of asbestos fibres. From her home city, Inside Health's Dr Margaret McCartney reports from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow, which is a specialist centre for patients with this cancer. She talks to Robert Henderson, who contracted mesothelioma fifty years after working as an apprentice electrician and to 68 year old Boyd McNicol, who worked as an art teacher in a school full of asbestos when he was in his 20s. Their doctor, Kevin Blyth, is a respiratory consultant who coordinates a mesothelioma service across Western Scotland. He tells Margaret that the 20, 30, 40 and even 50 year time lag between exposure to asbestos and a diagnosis of mesothelioma means that the cancer will still be claiming lives for many years to come and urgent new treatments are needed. Producer: Fiona Hill.

Dr Mark Porter unpicks the science behind the so called 'weekend effect'. Politicians have quoted research claiming that people are 20% more likely to die of a stroke at the weekend, while another much cited study finds 11,000 more deaths in people admitted at the weekend. But how valid are these figures and the research that generated them? Dr Margaret McCartney reviews the stroke data that has been criticised by experts as being out of date. While Mark Porter talks to Editor of the BMJ, Fiona Godlee, who published the 11,000 figure but is concerned about the political use of the findings. And discusses the study with lead author Nick Freemantle, plus Consultant Surgeon Sam Nashef who is sceptical about the results.

Business can be stressful, especially as an entrepreneur, right? Of course it can, and often is. But for Richard Sheridan, his life as a software entrepreneur is amazingly joyful. In fact, joy is the secret to his company's tremendous success. In 'Joy, Inc.', Richard reveals how a workplace culture build upon joy enables the most positive, productive, and profitable work. Not surprisingly, perhaps, joy is also at the root of Richard's success with the book. From nearly making a fatal mistake in writing the wrong book to pursuing a not-often-fun traditional book deal, Richard was able to remain joyful throughout. His result: an unexpected 'book effect' that is carrying his business to new heights. Join us as we explore just how Richard has managed to infused joy so successfully into his business and creative life, and how you can do the same! It stopped just short of promising eyesight to the blind or rain from dry skies. But disciples of the 1993 "Mozart Effect" study made impressive claims: Listening to music, they said, could boost Junior's math scores and maybe even get him into Harvard. The idea sparked a cottage industry of CDs, classes and books for babies and toddlers. But the now-famous study was vastly misconstrued, and 20 years and many studies later, neuroscientists are giving us a broader understanding of how musical training can impact brain development and cognition. The latest addition to the body of research came with a study published on Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience. It showed that people who took music lessons during childhood seem to have a faster brain response to speech much later in life – even if the child musicians hadn't picked up their instruments in decades. “What happens when we get older is that neural responses slow down, especially in response to very fast and complicated sounds like consonants,” Dr. Nina Krauss, a neuroscientist at Northwestern University tells Naomi Lewin. The study included 44 adults, aged 55 to 76, who listened to a recorded speech sound while the researchers measured electrical activity in the auditory brainstem, the region of the brain that processes sound. The more years that a person spent playing instruments during childhood, the faster their brains responded to the speech sound. Kraus’s lab has been a driving force in research around music and brain development. Among her other recent studies is one involving the Harmony Project, a program providing free instruments and instruction to at-risk kids in Los Angeles. Students there were tested on their ability to identify rhythmic patterns. "After a year of training, the kids who have been in the music training are better able to synchronize to the beat and to remember the beat,” said Kraus. This can serve to promote other cognitive skills, such as reading and speech. Virginia Penhune, a psychology professor at Concordia University in Montreal, says there's a "sensitive period" when musical training most interacts with normal brain development. Earlier this year, her lab published a study in the Journal of Neuroscience in which 36 adult musicians had their brains scanned while performing a simple movement exercise. Half of these musicians began musical training before age seven; the other half began at a later age. “What we found is that the younger you start your training, the stronger the connection between the two motor regions of your brain,” she said. Crucial to this phenomenon is the high level of hand coordination involved in playing a violin or piano, for instance. So, according to Penhune, "We think it’s that part of what you practice that changes these connections [in your brain]." And what of the Mozart Effect? Do those "Mozart for Babies" recordings haunt scientists today, misrepresenting music’s intrinsic capabilities? Or did the 1993 study raise the overall awareness for cognitive research involving music? "One of the difficulties of the Mozart Effect was it was associated with the passive listening of music,” said Kraus. "The work that Virginia and I have been talking about is really in stark contrast to that. It is the active engagement with an instrument.” Penhune agrees. “It also brings up this idea of, what do you expect music to do for you? Really why we take music lessons is we want kids to learn music and enjoy music and have social benefits of music. Thinking of it only as a way to change other things is a little bit of a mistake.” Listen to the full discussion above and weigh in: Have you studied music or prescribed musical studies specifically to boost brain power? Has it worked? Leave your comments below.
Last week our podcast crew had all only gotten started playing through Mass Effect 3, so the three of us got together to discuss our initial impressions of the game as well as how we have played through the trilogy. So, this week's podcast concerns our sense of the significance of how the ability to carry over story data from one game to the next affects the way we play the game and how much control we assert over getting "our" Mass Effect experience just right. Never fear, though, next week we will get into the full game, including the controversy surrounding its endings. So, stay tuned for that. In the meantime, we submit for your consideration: The Mass Effect Effect.
