If you had asked me a year ago if I would go and see Moulin Rouge without Aaron Tveit, my answer would have been a hard no. Thanks for friends and social media and opportunities to be exposed to other Christians and the actors portrayals of the character, I have open my mind and have gone on to see Derek Klena on Broadway and John Cardoza on tour. My friend Jill and I talk about the different Christians that we have seen at the Rouge and highlight how they have been able to use Aaron Tveit's portrayal as the foundation, but make the character their own. Enjoy!

A Holiday Spectacular – The Hallmark Channel's original new movie premiering November 27 as part of its “Countdown to Christmas” programming event – stars Broadway favorite Ginna Claire Mason (Wicked, Newsies, Flashdance) as a Philadelphia heiress named Maggie in 1958. Maggie puts her high-society wedding plans on hold to sneak up to New York City and make her secret dream come true: dancing live on stage in the Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall. While her family thinks she's staying in New York City with an “approved” friend from boarding school, Maggie is living a completely different life and falls in love with New York and dancing with the Rockettes. Maggie soon feels caught between two worlds, made even more complicated by her chance encounter with young U.S. Navy photographer John (played by fellow Broadway star Derek Klena). Will Maggie find the courage to tell her family what she wants for her future instead of accepting the future that was decided for her?

Derek is currently starring as Nick Healy in Broadway's Jagged Little Pill, and has authored a phenomenal career on stage. In addition to this, he may be one of our podcast's most theme-appropriate guests. As a high school pitcher in his native Southern California, Derek was a two-time first-team All-San Antonio League selection and two-time first-team All-Valley honoree, before enrolling in UCLA. While there, he was rostered on the school's iconic baseball team, pitching alongside eventual MLB All-Star hurlers Gerrit Cole and Trevor Bauer. He did all of this while simultaneously participating in theatre, with full awareness of the parallels between the two mediums. Derek has a clear understanding of the focus and dedication required to be successful both on the mound and on stage, as well as a necessary confidence to overcome peer pressure and stigmas. We also had plenty of fun in this episode, as we re-hashed many of Derek's roles and highlights here on Broadway, as his other credits include Wicked, The Bridges of Madison County, and Anastasia. While speaking about Nick Healy in Jagged Little Pill, it was fascinating to hear why he believes Alanis Morissette's iconic music and the story it's set to - plays so well on stage, as well as his overall connection to the character he's taking on in the show. This week Dan Tracy and Joe Carroll morn the loss of Waitress (officially closing January 5th, 2020). We talk all about what happens when a show gets their closing notice and what that means for Dan's wallet. We got the Broadway Blackout of 2019 and we love Derek Klena and Billy Porter. Actually we're super jealous of Derek... Did you know he played baseball for UCLA? It was a wild, action packed week in ol' NYC.
Our noses can detect nearly a trillion different scents. When the main character in our story smells just a handful of them he winds up in quite a mess! Derek Klena ("Anastasia," "Wicked,") and Max Casella ("The Lion King," "Music Man") co-star in this global folktale. Make sure you subscribe to this podcast wherever you're listening!
