Welcome back to the UNTOLD LEGENDS podcast hosted by Natalie C. Parker & Zoraida Córdova. We've had a little bit of a rebrand, so if you remember VAMPIRES NEVER GET OLD, we are still the same editors and writers, we've just expanded. Natalie and Zoraida are welcoming in the new year by chatting with Maggie Tokuda-Hall and Preeti Chhibber! This episode navigates honesty in storytelling, figuring out who the real monsters are, and how different iterations of Peter Pan—specifically the enchanting and sometimes terrifying mermaids from the tale—inspired their stories. Maggie Tokuda-Hall is the author of Also an Octopus, illustrated by Benji Davies, The Mermaid, The Witch and The Sea, Squad, illustrated by Lisa Sterle, and Love in the Library illustrated by Yas Imamura with more books forthcoming. She can be found on Twitter @emteehall. Called “Spider-Man super fan and author” by Publishers Weekly, Preeti Chhibber is a YA author, speaker, and freelance writer. She has written for SYFY, Polygon, BookRiot, BookRiot Comics, The Nerds of Color, and The Mary Sue, among others. She also co-hosts the podcasts Desi Geek Girls and Tar Valon or Bust. She's appeared on several panels at New York Comic Con and San Diego Comic Con, and on-screen on the SYFY Network. Honestly, you probably recognize her from one of several BuzzFeed “look at these tweets” Twitter lists. She usually spends her time reading a ridiculous amount of Young Adult but is also ready to jump into most fandoms at a moment's notice. She can be found on Instagram @runwithskizzers. Additional media mentioned: The Abyss (1989), Peter Pan (1953), Peter Pan (2023), Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie, The Little Mermaid (1989), Jennifer's Body (2009), and Cinderella Ate My Daughter by Peggy Orenstein. Follow Zoraida Córdova @zoraidasolo and Natalie C. Parker @ncparker on Instagram.

In a world where trust in institutions and in news is falling and the role of influencers is growing, finding the connective tissue between you and your audience is key to, well, connecting.  To establish a rapport, which can if nourished, lead to trust, which can lead to a genuine connection. And for the creator to go further, to push deeper, to find meaning and bearing in places we as consumers or readers or listeners might not otherwise look or expect, like in local news or video game reviews or recipes. I think that matters a lot. We're not only losing trust but feeling that loss. With so much coming at us, we notice and feel a lack of connection, we feel adrift and unmoored. I am moved by people whose work and art I can connect with, whether I'm seeking it out or not. Because connection matters. Who we get our COVID information or our weather forecasts from matters, but also who helps us understand where we can find comfort, and why. My guest today is Swapna Krishna. Swapna is a writer and journalist covering space, science, tech, and pop culture. She writes everywhere from Fast Company to StarWars.com, from StarTrek.com to Business Insider, the LA Times, Bitch Magazine, Bustle, Mental Floss, and more. She's appeared on a million excellent podcasts, at Comic-Con, and is the co-host of her own show, the Desi Geek Girls podcast, and the new host of PBS's show Far Out. Swapna often writes some of the most empathetic tech and pop culture commentary on the web. She has this unique ability to say “this is what this big thing means to me” and make you feel like “yes, me too!” or “Wait I didn't think about that”. We have very different backgrounds and lives but I trust her writing and thoroughly enjoy her new show, and her efforts to try and meet people where they are, on science issues and pop culture fandoms big and small. ----------- Have feedback or questions? http://www.twitter.com/importantnotimp (Tweet us), or send a message to questions@importantnotimportant.com New here? Is humanity truly capable of taking responsibility for each other? Is a polyam queer utopia possible? Join us as we discuss all this and more! Quick content note: Since we recorded this episode, Boyfriend Dungeon discourse has emerged around the role of content warnings in games. Preeti Chhibber, host of the Desi Geek Girls podcast, and I geek out over the things we love while discussing her wonderfully geeky new books AVENGERS ASSEMBLY: ORIENTATION, STAR WARS THE CLONE WARS: STORIES OF LIGHT AND DARK, and A JEDI, YOU WILL BE. She shares how working her side hustle talking about stuff she loved online while working a day job in children’s publishing led to her writing PETER AND NED’S ULTIMATE TRAVEL JOURNAL, interviewing the cast of SPIDERMAN: FAR FROM HOME, and a rewarding career. But mostly we talk nerdy about what characters from different fandoms would make for great stories and what superpower would be best to have. Called “Spider-Man super fan and author” by Publishers Weekly, Preeti Chhibber is a YA author, speaker, and freelance writer. She works as a publishing professional. She has written for SYFY, BookRiot, BookRiot Comics, The Nerds of Color, and The Mary Sue, among others. Her short story, "Girls Who Twirl and Other Dangers" was published in the anthology A Thousand Beginnings and Endings (HarperCollins, 2018). Her first book, Spider-Man: Far From Home: Peter and Ned’s Ultimate Travel Journal was released in June 2019. You can find her co-hosting the podcasts Desi Geek Girls and Strong Female Characters (SYFYWire). She’s appeared on several panels at New York Comic Con, San Diego Comic Con, and on screen on the SYFY Network. Honestly, you probably recognize her from one of several BuzzFeed “look at these tweets” twitter lists. She usually spends her time reading a ridiculous amount of Young Adult but is also ready to jump into most fandoms at a moment’s notice.

Since the NOC launched in 2013, actress Janina Gavankar has been one of the community's biggest celebrity boosters. Now, finally, Janina is able to join us on Hard NOC Life! In the intervening years, she has racked up the nerd bona fides by starring in Arrow, True Blood, and Sleepy Hollow. But now, she is part of the biggest nerd franchise of them all: as Iden Versio in the blockbuster game franchise Star Wars: Battlefront II. Keith and Janina discuss her upbringing in an immigrant household in Illinois and her initiation as a drum corps geek as a teenager. Then, they talk about her gamer origins and what it's like coming on to projects while also being a fan of the properties. They also talk about how important it is to see a brown girl be the face of something like Star Wars and what it was like portraying a character as nuanced as Iden Versio. Later, she exposes the Desi Illuminati, endorses the Desi Geek Girls podcast, and shouts out everyone's Iden cosplay! All this and more on Hard NOC Life! Watch it on your screen, hit "play," and check this. Subscribe to all of podcasts in the Hard NOC Media family on Apple Podcasts and Google Play! As always, our official theme music is brought to you by the super team of Adam WarRock and Chops.
