When young athletes come into money, here's why they need expert tax advice and the inflationary world of child care has Americans struggling to balance work and family. And as always taxes. Episode Transcript Intro: Welcome to the Practical Tax podcast, with tax attorney Steve Moskowitz. The Practical Tax podcast is brought to you by Moskowitz, LLP, a tax law firm. You should see professional consultation for your individual tax and legal situation. Chip Franklin: All right. Well, welcome to another edition of Practical Tax, with tax attorney Steve Moskowitz and Chip Franklin. Steve, this has always intrigued me and that is the athlete that comes into a lot of money when he has never had any money in his life. Steve Moskowitz: Oh yeah. Chip Franklin: I know, because you've done a lot of sports shows. You and I have talked about this in the past and you've talked about luxury taxes and all, but this is something that really touches me. I had a long talk once with MC Hammer about what he went through and all the money he lost. I knew Dexter Manley, you might remember that name from back in the old Washington football team days, and he lost it all, and others. It's always broken my heart because it's difficult for these kids. They bring along everybody they grew up with and everything and they try to give to everyone and then it's gone. I think that's just so sad. Joining us right now is Ali Siam. He is a sports agent who has a lot of experience in this. He's negotiated more than a dozen or so NFL contracts and he's nice enough to join us on Practical Tax. Ali, welcome the show. Say hi to Steve. Steve Moskowitz: Hi. How are you? Ali Siam: Hi, how you guys doing today? Thank you for having me. Chip Franklin: There's a lot in the news, obviously, every year as the different drafts happen. There was a kid on my street who signed a deal with Tampa Bay. He was the 28th pick in the draft in baseball. Here, in Southern California, that happens a lot. He got three-and-a-half million signing bonus, but he's 18, so now he's going to be playing against the best people he's never seen. When he was in high school, he was the best player in the county. Now, he's just another guy. Fortunately, he has a father that will help look out after it. Let me ask you both, and let me start with you, Steve, when we look at this kind of income coming in, how many people are really prepared for that? Steve Moskowitz: Almost nobody. Here's problem number one, when the guys get it, they're really young and they don't realize that the life of a professional athlete is nowhere near the life of most other jobs, and that is a job. You get beaucoup money up front and you spend it, but the problem is most other professions, you wouldn't blink an eye when say how long you would be working. With an athlete, a lot of athletes are finished in their 20s, maybe into their 30s. What other position do you know of that you say, "Oh, 40, are you kidding? 50?" How many football players can only play a couple of seasons because they get injured so much? So, the bottom line is, basically, if I was talking to somebody like this, I'd say, "Look, let's take a look at this contract and figure this is the money you're going to get for a lifetime. So, you're 21 years old, let's say you have another 60 years to go or so, let's divide this and see how much we're getting here." And then what I do is I make it practical, I say, "Look, we're not going to save every penny. Here's a portion of percentage, just blow it. Have a good time, have fun," but it's a percentage.

Williams returned with 14:17 left in the second quarter, and the Washington offense began to click. And much like they had in the second half of Super Bowl XXI against the New York Giants, the Broncos defense collapsed. On the Redskins' first play of the second quarter, receiver Ricky Sanders got behind defensive back Mark Haynes (who tried to jam him at the line of scrimmage) and safety Tony Lilly, and caught a pass from Williams, and took it 80 yards for a touchdown. After forcing the Broncos to punt on their next possession, Washington advanced to the Denver 27. Facing third-and-one, Williams connected with receiver Gary Clark who made a diving catch in the end zone to give Washington a 14–10 lead. After the ensuing kickoff, Denver drove to the Washington 26, aided by running back Sammy Winder's 27-yard reception and Elway's 21-yard run. But left tackle Dave Studdard, blocking defensive end Dexter Manley, went down with a knee injury. After Elway threw an incomplete pass on third down, Karlis missed a 43-yard field goal attempt. On the first play of the Redskins' ensuing drive, Williams threw a 16-yard completion to Clark. Then on the next play, running back Timmy Smith, a rookie in his first NFL start, took off for a 58-yard touchdown run, with blocking from guard Raleigh McKenzie and tackle Joe Jacoby, making the score 21–10.[9] Washington's offensive line featuring McKenzie and Jacoby figured greatly in a play known as the Counter Gap, which the Skins ran repeatedly in the game.[12] The Redskins increased their lead to 28–10 on their next possession with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Sanders, making him the first player in Super Bowl history to catch two touchdowns in one quarter. Four plays after the ensuing kickoff, Washington defensive back Barry Wilburn intercepted a pass from Elway on the Redskins 21, and once again, the Redskins stormed down the field to score. First, Smith broke loose for a 43-yard run, then Williams completed a pair of passes to Sanders to reach the Denver 7. Two plays later, Williams threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Clint Didier to make the score 35–10. On Denver's next drive, Elway completed three consecutive passes for 40 total yards to advance to the Redskins 36. However, Washington rookie defensive back Brian Davis intercepted Elway's next pass at the 21 with seven seconds left in the half. In the second quarter alone, Williams completed 9 of 11 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns; Smith rushed five times for 122 yards and a touchdown; and Sanders caught five passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. The Redskins scored 35 points and gained 356 yards in total offense, both Super Bowl records, and scored five touchdowns on 18 total offensive plays. During the regular season, the Broncos had allowed 35 points for the entire game only once—and it was in that game, a 40-10 loss to the Houston Oilers in Week 4, that they fielded replacement players, with the regular players having gone on strike. Washington's 25-point lead at the half surpassed the previous record of 20 points set by San Francisco in Super Bowl XVI.

Charles Mann on how his passion for learning paid off on the football field ~ ". . .that [play] book was thick and I memorized, I mean, I took in all that information and had it down and those last few years of my football career were effortless " Charles Mann, Business Man and Washington Redskins 70 Greatest Honoree and Andy Ockershausen in studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Our Town, this is Andy Ockershausen and delightful guest today is, one of our favorites from the glory days of the Washington Redskins, but we're not here to talk about the Redskins. We're talking about a man names Charles Mann, number 71, who'll always be remembered as a co-End with Dexter Manley. Charles Mann: That's true. That's a good way to be remembered. Andy Ockershausen: Those were the glory years. Charles Mann: Two extremes. One extreme to the other extreme. Andy Ockershausen: But Charles, you've had such a wonderful career beyond football, I mean, all the things that you've done and your accomplishments are, I think, great lessons for the young players, that there's life after football. You proved it. Charles Mann - Passion for Learning Paid Off on Football Field Charles Mann: You know, Joe Gibbs told me this, and I never knew this and now I'm starting to brag 'cause you know, as more time ... and this is my 22nd year out of the league so, the longer you're out of the league, the more embellishments come. Anyway, but this is the truth, Joe Gibbs told me that I scored the highest on the test that they give players to see their football aptitude and it's called the, I can't even think of the name of the test. But, it's very well known. Andy Ockershausen: A league wide test, correct? Charles Mann: A league wide test that they give ... they'd give it at the Combine I believe. But, they tested me and it's not an aptitude, it's a football aptitude test. It's how many concepts, how much information can they take in and deal with- Andy Ockershausen: What can you absorb, correct? Charles Mann: Yeah so, I never knew though, that I had a passion for learning. And I had a passion for learning and it transferred from the football field. We had this thick binder that Torgy Torgeson and Larry Peccatiello and- Andy Ockershausen: All the assistant coaches. Charles Mann: Yeah, that, I mean ... and Petitbon, the main guy, but that book was thick and I memorized, I mean, I took in all that information and had it down and those last few years of my football career were effortless. Andy Ockershausen: You were way ahead. Work Smarter, Not Harder - Career Related Surgery Charles Mann: Well, what you wanna do in life is, you wanna work smarter, not harder, you know? And so I began to apply my skills and my brain over those physical skills that are starting to slow down and wear down ... I just two years ago, December 21, 2015, I had back surgery, L3-L4. I had it 0n December 21 and I remembered very well- Andy Ockershausen: Did the league pay for that surgery? Charles Mann: No. Andy Ockershausen: That was you? Charles Mann: Yeah. Andy Ockershausen: You were out of it long enough so couldn't blame it on them. Charles Mann: No, they should ... No, it definitely was from my career. Andy Ockershausen: Football related. Charles Mann: Everything I have is from my career, but you have to go through a whole bunch of trials and tribulations and prove a bunch of stuff and by the time you have the surgery, you should have had it two years prior. So I always have insurance- Andy Ockershausen: So you just got it done. Charles Mann: So I just go have the insurance and pay for it, but I had it done- Andy Ockershausen: Let's talk about the old Charles Mann. Charles Mann: No, but let me tell you this though, I had it done as a gift to myself. That's why I had it on December 21. This was my Christmas gift, I was not gonna have anymore doggone back pain. Andy Ockershausen: Good for you.

GEICO. 15 minutes will save you 15 percent or more on car insurance. Now, here’s your host, Andy Ockershausen. Janice Ockershausen: Hi, this is Janice Ockershausen, the executive producer of Our Town, and we wanted to look at Season One. This is a transition piece, and we wanted to let people know that we are finishing Season One and starting Season Two. Andy Ockershausen: We had 53 guests in our first season, were going to have at least 40 more in our second, and we hope you've enjoyed listening to their stories. You know, we've got stories of success, of failure, some happiness, some sadness, prosperity, we had people that failed that were on this show. We have a homeless person who talked about the city and what she goes through. It makes this Our Town tick, the people. Janice Ockershausen: You know what? It makes it personal. What has been really exciting for me, listening to every podcast then re-listening to it and presenting it, it's a wonderful thing because you have experienced with these people, all hand-picked people, all hand-picked guests by either you or me, and we know them, we have lived through some of these exciting times, and it was so interesting to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Andy Ockershausen: Well you know, Janny, that has been a big revelation to me. For whatever reason, I got a lot of stuff in my cranium. I guess I absorbed and kept everything I ever heard of, and it's like a computer, but to have people talk about things that I grew up with, and to be able to understand what they're saying, has been a great boon to me and to them. I can get questions and ask questions of people that think I don't know, and I know because I was there. Janice Ockershausen: Yeah, you're incredibly well read, and your memory is unbelievable. It's the little details that you're able to connect with your guests that make it so interesting and so full, and so flavorful. The texture of Our Town is remarkable. Andy Ockershausen: The people of Our Town have made it so great over the 50 years of that we are talking about, and we've got more to come, but the guests that we've had, and they don't really feel like guests. They feel a part of Our Town, which makes me feel great. Janice Ockershausen: They're our family and our friends. Andy Ockershausen: Absolutely. They're great friends. Janice Ockershausen: If you look back at a little bit of the list of people we had, were Bill Regardie, a fantastic interview, Cary Hatch, Sonny Jurgensen, Dexter Manley, Lon Anderson, Wendy Rieger. Andy Ockershausen: You know, Tommy Loverro, that he just started his own show. Janice Ockershausen: With Andy Pollin. Andy Ockershausen: Andy Pollin, and listen, Irene Pollin called us to be on with us. You know, we've had people like Frank Herzog, boy nobody forgets him. Paul Berry, my god, Paul. Christine Brennan, Johnny Holiday, golly what a great talent. Janice Ockershausen: We had Charlie Brotman before he was Charlie Brotman. We had Henry Sacks, our dear friend, and probably the most meaningful guest for me, I guess symbolically, was that we based Our Town on the principles of The Harden and Weaver Show, our first guest and our last guest. Actually he was the first one that we interviewed, and the last one we out on for Season One, was our dear friend Frank Harden.

Dexter Manley, former Defensive End for the Washington Redskins, was nicknamed football's “Secretary of Defense” in 1986 by a top government official. Listen in to Dexter tell Andy O the story about how he received the nickname and from whom. Andy says of Dexter Manley, “for many years a legend in the city of Washington. Manley "did so much as a player and so much as a human being”. Dexter recalls that he and Andy met for the first time at training camp in Carlisle Pennsylvania, and how Andy won him over with a deal at the station, “I did a show . . .maybe for about a year and they paid me not one dime but they furnished my bedroom suit for free. I'd never heard of that before. I said where’s my money. Jack Kent Cook said get money don’t go for those deals.” Lots of laughter ensues and we see why Andy refers to Dexter Manley as a “character”. Growing Up in Houston, TX and Oklahoma State University Football Andy O and Dexter talk about Dexter’s childhood years in Houston, Texas. He describes the environment he grew up in as poverty and crime stricken and lots of divorce. He also describes his hard-working parents who made sure he went to church and grew up with good Christian values. Dexter talks about the guys in his neighborhood stealing bicycles, smoking marijuana, and drinking “md2020”, and how he chose to stay away from that. One of the most devastating times in his young life was when, while sitting on his porch, he looked down the street and saw his brother put into the backseat of a police car. His brother landed in a juvenile home from that encounter with the police. Dexter's brother played football at the local high school, and was his hero. He also saw young talented high school football players leave town to play in college only to get in trouble and return home. He knew he didn’t want this for himself. He went to school, sat is the front row, but despite his efforts he graduated functionally illiterate. He also tells Andy “I had such tunnel vision I wanted to play football trying to get out of that environment. I had 37 scholarship offers.” Manley goes on to recall how in his junior year at Jack Yates High School he was recruited to play in college. This process brought him closer to his Dad. Growing up, Dex received little attention from his Dad. Despite how good he was at football – he was a high school all American - his Dad watched him play only once in high school. His Dad saw him in a different light once the coaches started to come around. So did the whole community. “They couldn’t believe it, Bum Phillips and Jim Stanley they are getting out of these limos coming to my gun shack house sitting up on blocks in the ghetto.” At a big breakfast in Houston, Bum Phillips, head coach of the Houston Oilers, said that Dex should play at Oklahoma State University. That’s all it took for Dexter to attend OSU for the next four years. He tells Andy that neither he nor his Dad knew then what all that meant, all they knew that these big names were telling him he had a future in football. Dexter’s four years at Oklahoma State University were tumultuous. They fired head coach Jim Stanley and brought on Pittsburgh’s defensive coordinator Jimmie Johnson to replace him. Jimmie Johnson came on in Dex’s junior year, and was his coach for remaining two years. He had them winning games. Dexter goes on to talk about the OSU’s probation “for passing out benefits” to players. He recalls receiving the keys to a brand-new car. He tells Andy “I was coming off the practice field, Charlie Alexander said sit in the car that was a brand-new car, and I never forget. I never had hardly nothing brand-new so we turn the radio on, and we heard the news Elvis died, he said Manley, he gave me the keys, this is yours. And so, I'll never forget that as long as I live.” 1981 NFL Scouting Combine, Tampa Bay, FL Andy asks Manley how the Washington Redskins found him.
