The Sports Experience Podcast with Chris Quinn and Dominic DiTolla
Episode 258 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the gridiron discussing Roger Craig. A revolutionary player, Craig became a star for the San Francisco 49ers during the 1980s. Craig was a weapon at Fullback and Running Back in San Francisco's West Coast Offense, and his skills as a runner, receiver and blocker made him an integral part of the 49ers' dynasty. Craig's valuable set of skills helped him to become the first player in NFL history to record 1,000+ rushing yards and 1,000+ receiving yards in the same regular season in 1985! The former Nebraska Cornhusker made four Pro Bowls, won the NFL Offensive POY Award in 1988 and won three Super Bowls with San Francisco. One of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's biggest snubs, Craig finished his career with 13,100 yards from scrimmage and 73 total touchdowns. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support

In this video Steve breaks down why he thinks John Matsko was fired from the #commanders. This was a scheme fit issue. Matsko had been in the Air Coryell system his entire career. Now that new offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy is on board, Matsko doesnt fit the WCO. Linemen in the WCO are more mobile, athletic, and have to hold blocks for less time than the Air Coryell. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/commandthis/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/commandthis/support

Our guest is Paul Sabin, a sports data scientist and an analytics writer at ESPN. Paul has worked on predictive and descriptive models for sports performance including ESPN's proprietary metrics such as BPI, FPI, and Strength of Record (SOR). Paul explains how he ended up working for ESPN, why he is Bayesian instead of a frequentist, and how a Bayesian approach to the real world can make you more informed and better off. We also discuss the applications of sports analytics in the major US sports leagues including the NFL and the NBA. Paul references a book for those who want to learn more. The book is called The Theory That Would Not Die: How Bayes' Rule Cracked the Enigma Code, Hunted Down Russian Submarines, and Emerged Triumphant from Two Centuries of Controversy.
Beginning with his hilarious recap of the notorious “Rosencopter” defeat to Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts, and continuing with his evocative portrayal of the tension between future Hall of Famer Brett Favre and head coach Brad Childress during the Minnesota Vikings’ 2009 season, Sage entertains us with behind-the-scenes anecdotes and insights, at one point describing “the best throw I’ve ever seen in the sport of football.” He then pivots into a political discussion that excoriates Ted Cruz, Donald Trump and other right-wing zealots--likening the ex-President’s role in the Jan. 6 insurrection to that of a coach giving a fiery pregame speech--and explores the possibility of him holding higher office. We also hear the story of Natalie’s arresting question to her father while she was in the middle of a charged protest on UC Berkeley’s Sproul Plaza and he was charging toward the Super Bowl party he was co-hosting in Houston.

On this episode of Running the 40, Steve Bono joins the show. We discuss the conflict he had in this past year's Super Bowl game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs, as well as the deep links between the two organizations. He talks about his days of playing under coach Andy Reid in Green Bay and how Reid has modified the West Coast Offense to keep it relevant in today's game. Bono is currently the alumni coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and he talks about how the team can bounce back from the loss. We also talk about the impact baseball is having on our NFL Quarterbacks, between Kyler Murray and Patrick Mahomes. Finally, he discusses what the change of scenery could mean for Tom Brady in Tampa Bay. Give it a listen.
Breakdown of Kansas City Chiefs' Head Coach Andy Reid and his coaching tree. Mongo examines his early days at BYU and his start in the West Coast Offense. Mongo traces the offense's developments along with the development of many of his assistant coaches to becoming head coaches themselves. I hope you guys enjoy!
Welcome to Fantasy Football, in Theory, your only podcast devoted to fantasy football strategy in the abstract. What if everything we thought we knew about football was wrong? What if the all-time greats and the all-time goods and all-time okays were really just an indecipherable mess distinguished primarily by chance, a series of coins that could have just as easily landed on the other side (if they were even destined to be flipped at all)? What if the universe— to quote Fantasy Football, in Theory favorite J.B.S. Haldane— is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose. Today I talk about how everything we see is a product of everything we don't see. If you want to read more about the history of the West Coast Offense and its roots in Cincinnati, I highly recommend this piece by Chris Wesseling of NFL.com: https://www.nfl.com/news/sidelines/the-ohio-river-offense If you enjoy my work, you can find it exclusively at www.footballguys.com. Nick Kendell and Carl Dumler dive into some of their favorite scheme fits in the 2019 NFL Draft. Given that the Broncos are projected to transition to a Shanahan-style West Coast Offense and a more Cover 2 based defense, the 2019 class will be riddled with players that will help the schematic transition. From a true two way tight end, to wide receiver to replace Emmanuel Sanders, to defensive fits at defensive tackle, linebacker, and cornerback, the fellas project some of their favorite 'fits' in the upcoming class that the Broncos may target. Good morning Horners! The guys are back and ready to start the 2019 league year. After a couple months of stewing in the disappointment that was the 2018 season, Ted Glover, Drew Bunting, and Dave Stefano return to discuss the state of the Minnesota Vikings. They look at the timeline that ran up to selecting John DeFilippo and Kirk Cousins. The flaws in the decision making of selecting an offensive coordinator that was going to implement a style of offense not conducive to neither the quarterback not the group of offensive linemen that had to block for him, and ask why? The Vikes have since hired the “Denver Mafia” lead by Gary Kubiak and including Rick Dennison. The whole group of new coaches will reportedly be focusing on implementing a more traditional West Coast Offense style of play that is said to be better suited to Kirk Cousins skills and a zone blocking scheme that should help in his protection and in the run game. Mike Zimmer in effect gets to get his guy who can mentor the Kevin Stefanski in the offensive coordinator role and ensure the offense is more productive while he can focus on the defense and the necessary future players needed to fill holes of departing free agents, cuts and trades. The team will see quite a few new faces due to having to clear money to gain cap space. OTC reports the Vikings are sitting $5,340,897 available and that isn’t even enough to sign the rookie class. There is still need money for veteran free agents and eventually the practice squad to cover for the up and coming season. This means so veterans of the squad last year will have to be let go one way or another. With the Vikings not tagging Anthony Barr in any way, just gives you one example of needs that will have to be addressed in some fashion. On signing free agents, the Vikings have already started with in-house guys fullback CJ Ham and punter Matt Wile, signing them to veteran minimum deals. With the offensive line being a factor of last season’s dismal results, the focus will be needed either through free agency, the draft, or both to shore it up. Last year’s rookie Brian O’Neill proved to be a bright spot, but he will have to be combined with 4 other guys in a more mobile system geared to take advantage of their skills. Mike Remmers looks to be a cap casualty, and a logical choice to free up some funds, but his right guard position will have to be filled. Pat Elflein should look forward to a full offseason of strengthening and his level of play improving to where fans thought it would be after his rookie season. The Riley Reiff will sit as the left tackle, for now, with the only questions being in the guard spots. That could change however depending on what is available to the Vikings in the draft and what shuffling of players coach Dennison decides to work best. The NFL Combine is complete, free agency nears, and the draft will follow shortly after that. The guys at GMG hope you join in the laughs, the debate, and the hopes that come with being Minnesota Vikings fans. Tell us what you are hoping to see in the next month as the beloved Purple makes another run at getting better. Like, subscribe, and ring that damn bell! Then shout SKOL! As always, enjoy the watch! It’s always great to look back at the history of the game of pro football. Having had the fortune to cover the NFL for more than four decades, I can say the 1980s were special. Thanks to great coaching and great players, pro football went from a physical game that featured running and defense into a smart, situational type of game in the 1980s. So much of that had to do with coaching, and Bob Glauber, who’s been covering the NFL since the 1980s, has written the definitive book on the 1980s. "Guts and Genius: The Story of Three Unlikely Coaches Who Came To Dominate THE NFL in the 1980s" hits the market in November. He joins us on Schooled with the Professor. Bob tells great stories about Bill Walsh, Joe Gibbs and Bill Parcells. Those three coaches won a combined eight Super Bowls in the 1980s, but more importantly, they changed the game. Walsh brought the West Coast Offense, a staple that made the NFL a quarterback-driven league. Parcells glorified the 3-4 defense with Lawrence Taylor. Gibbs was simply a genius. He could figure out how to beat a defense by just observing alignments.
With Tony still on Thanksgiving break, Dangles and Brian turn to a couple of TLC regulars to fill the gap. Our resident Giants fan Alex Alcheh and Panthers fan Thomas Jones 'TJ' Wortham guest host and with Eli Manning's benching in New York and the NFC South shaping up to be the most contentious conference in the league, the timing was perfect. Alcheh looks into his crystal ball to see what the future holds for both Eli and the Giants (3:11), we ask TJ whether the Panthers can hold on for a division title, (9:38), and we MFK the three teams in the NFC South competing for a playoff spot (10:20). Plus, we switch it up during Gravestones (20:50) and hand off two of our three picks to our guest hosts, who make two very surprising choices. Then, it's on to the Battle for L.A. (25:55), where we're all feeling a bit sheepish for giving up on the Chargers so early in the season. Finally, we end with our Pick' Em Challenge (45:18), where Brian has once again overtaken Dangles for the season lead and TJ and Alcheh compete for guest host Pick 'Em supremacy and try to beat Bret Green's mark of 8-8 from earlier this year. If you had an appetite for destruction in the late 80's, were fond of lies, used your illusion, and got into any spaghetti incidents? in the early 90's, you were most likely a fan of Guns N' Roses. And if you were eagerly awaiting the Chinese democracy, well, you probably grew up and moved on. But not Rodrigo and Brian, they kept the flame lit (mostly Rodrigo). Guns N' Roses were the quintessential rock n' roll band, played loud music, did tons of drugs, dated strippers, refused to use proper conjunctions...the list goes on. They Rose quickly, took a Nightrain to super stardom, but somewhere along the line they broke an Axl. Due to heavy drug use, changing musical tastes and well, Axl, the band went through a revolving door of members causing a great delay in the much anticipated Chinese Democracy album. Chinese Democracy was finally released in 2008 but was it worth the wait? Rodrigo sits Guns N' Roses atop his top 7 (yes 7) all-time favorite musical acts, and Brian explains how he runs like the West Coast Offense. Hope everyone enjoys Episode 8, because you never know, it might be 15 years until they drop another episode!

Have you ever heard of the West Coast Offense? If you are a football fan, you have. Before the San Francisco 49’ers with Bill Walsh popularized it, the mindset of almost all of the coaches of the NFL was that an offense had to be built around running the football –and only then could you pass effectively. Bill Walsh with the West Coast Offense turned this thinking around. Mindset. It is the way we see something or someone. It is very hard to change. It takes someone strong and influential in our lives to change our mindset. Enter Jesus….for both Peter and for us!
