Iona College Radio Hour with Willie O'Ree and Chelsea Cabarcas
Williams returned with 14:17 left in the second quarter, and the Washington offense began to click. And much like they had in the second half of Super Bowl XXI against the New York Giants, the Broncos defense collapsed. On the Redskins' first play of the second quarter, receiver Ricky Sanders got behind defensive back Mark Haynes (who tried to jam him at the line of scrimmage) and safety Tony Lilly, and caught a pass from Williams, and took it 80 yards for a touchdown. After forcing the Broncos to punt on their next possession, Washington advanced to the Denver 27. Facing third-and-one, Williams connected with receiver Gary Clark who made a diving catch in the end zone to give Washington a 14–10 lead. After the ensuing kickoff, Denver drove to the Washington 26, aided by running back Sammy Winder's 27-yard reception and Elway's 21-yard run. But left tackle Dave Studdard, blocking defensive end Dexter Manley, went down with a knee injury. After Elway threw an incomplete pass on third down, Karlis missed a 43-yard field goal attempt. On the first play of the Redskins' ensuing drive, Williams threw a 16-yard completion to Clark. Then on the next play, running back Timmy Smith, a rookie in his first NFL start, took off for a 58-yard touchdown run, with blocking from guard Raleigh McKenzie and tackle Joe Jacoby, making the score 21–10.[9] Washington's offensive line featuring McKenzie and Jacoby figured greatly in a play known as the Counter Gap, which the Skins ran repeatedly in the game.[12] The Redskins increased their lead to 28–10 on their next possession with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Williams to Sanders, making him the first player in Super Bowl history to catch two touchdowns in one quarter. Four plays after the ensuing kickoff, Washington defensive back Barry Wilburn intercepted a pass from Elway on the Redskins 21, and once again, the Redskins stormed down the field to score. First, Smith broke loose for a 43-yard run, then Williams completed a pair of passes to Sanders to reach the Denver 7. Two plays later, Williams threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to tight end Clint Didier to make the score 35–10. On Denver's next drive, Elway completed three consecutive passes for 40 total yards to advance to the Redskins 36. However, Washington rookie defensive back Brian Davis intercepted Elway's next pass at the 21 with seven seconds left in the half. In the second quarter alone, Williams completed 9 of 11 passes for 228 yards and four touchdowns; Smith rushed five times for 122 yards and a touchdown; and Sanders caught five passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. The Redskins scored 35 points and gained 356 yards in total offense, both Super Bowl records, and scored five touchdowns on 18 total offensive plays. During the regular season, the Broncos had allowed 35 points for the entire game only once—and it was in that game, a 40-10 loss to the Houston Oilers in Week 4, that they fielded replacement players, with the regular players having gone on strike. Washington's 25-point lead at the half surpassed the previous record of 20 points set by San Francisco in Super Bowl XVI.

EPISODE SUMMARY The third and most overhyped and overstated reason fans contend that Smith was successful is because he ran behind a great offensive line, perhaps 'the best line.' Really? Does anyone discredit former Steelers middle linebacker Jack Lambert's achievements because he played behind arguably the best D-line ever? No! I rarely ever hear that. Many great backs ran behind great offensive lines. So why does Emmitt get knocked for having an excellent line while others don't? Franco Harris in Pittsburgh ran behind a great offensive line, led by Hall of Fame center Mike Webster. John Riggins (Washington) ran behind a great offensive line, led by HOF guard Russ Grimm and possible future HOF tackle Joe Jacoby. Buffalo's OJ Simpson benefited from running behind "The Electric Company" led by HOF guard Joe DeLamielleure.... The day after being named a Hall of Fame finalist for the third time, Joe Jacoby was kind enough to join JP Finlay on this episode of Redskins Talk. Finlay and the Washington star discuss Jacoby's favorite Super Bowl, the one, epic time he scored a touchdown and whether or not he feels those talented 'Skins teams are represented enough in the Hall of Fame. Finlay also presents a compelling theory about why this time may be different for the Hall hopeful, a theory that Jacoby buys in to.
Andy is joined by 3 time Redskins Super Bowl champion Joe Jacoby. They cover how he made it to the Redskins as an undrafted free agent, his confusing 1st meeting with Joe Gibbs, almost quitting the NFL early on, the first title and Riggo's run, clearing up the confusion of the night Theismann broke his leg, the second Super Bowl win, the "bandwagon" team in 91, and his post playing career.

Larry Michael on what would be better than the Washington Redskins playing in Super Bowl LII ~ ". . .the perfect scenario here would be, the Redskins go to the Super Bowl in 2017, which would mean 2018, and the day before the game is played, we get where Joe Jacoby is going into the Hall of Fame." Larry Michael, Voice of the Washington Redskins A Ockershausen: What a great opportunity for you in Our Town to hear about the voice of the Washington Redskins, who's going to be now a voice of the Washington Redskins WMAL thank you, thank you, thank you. A very dear friend and a big, big man in broadcasting in Our Town, Larry Michael. Welcome to Our Town. Larry Michael: Hi, buddy. How you doing? A Ockershausen: Larry, we've had such a great, great time with you. I look about all the stuff you've done, and I can't believe it until I've seen it and read about it. You have been involved in so much, but you never left town. Larry Michael: Never did, and one of my highlights is working with you. A Ockershausen: Oh, Larry, the good old days. Larry Michael: The telethon. A Ockershausen: Oh, boy. The good old days and now, Larry. I read so much about you, but I didn't read- Larry Michael: Got a lot of notes there, don't you? The Early Years in Our Town A Ockershausen: Anything about you until I talked to you about your beginning in Our Town. Your family moved here from Chicago. Larry Michael: Yeah. I was born in Chicago. My parents were from Sparta, Greece. In fact, my brother was born in Greece. A Ockershausen: Spartans? Larry Michael: Spartans, yes. Yes, 100%. Then from Chicago, they moved to D.C., Southeast D.C. when I was two, so there is a picture of me in a Cubs shirt as a baby, but that's it. D.C. from then on. Then a year after that, they moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, Four Corners area of Silver Spring, and I lived there, grew up there. I consider Silver Spring my hometown, really, but I was born in Chicago. A Ockershausen: But that's still Our Town. Silver Spring is Our Town. Larry Michael: I think so. A Ockershausen: Annapolis is our town. Larry Michael: I think so. A Ockershausen: Everything is within, what you got, about eight million people in our big broadcast schedule. Larry Michael: Yeah. A Ockershausen: Including Baltimore. . .they know you, Larry. Larry Michael: My dad had an establishment in D.C. and obviously, we went to D.C. Stadium. A Ockershausen: Not an estab- a very fine restaurant. Larry Michael: Well, it's wasn't that fine, but it was a restaurant. I say establishment, some of them might think the wrong thing, huh? I said it. Obviously, we'd go to D.C. then RFK Stadium, and me and my brother would go, and later with friends, and just never left the area. Went to school here and had a couple of opportunities to leave, but- Four Corners Elementary School | Sligo Junior High | Northwood High School A Ockershausen: You went to grammar school and high school? Larry Michael: Went to Four Corners Elementary on University Boulevard. It's no longer there. A Ockershausen: Right. Larry Michael: They've got an assisted living home there or something. I went to Sligo Junior High, which is still there on Dennis Avenue, and I went to that fine, the Harvard at the Mid-Atlantic, the University of Maryland. A Ockershausen: Well, where'd you go to high school? Larry Michael: Northwood High School. A Ockershausen: Oh, Northwood. Larry Michael: Silver Spring, Maryland. A Ockershausen: That was closed. Yeah. Larry Michael: University, I skipped that. And in fact, Northwood was closed for a long, long time because of a lack of enrollment right there, and it's right there, Kent Mill area, right before you get to Kent Mill- A Ockershausen: Know it well. Larry Michael: On University Boulevard, before you get to Wheaton and Northwood High School was my high school. Still hang out with some of my buddies from back then.

Thom Loverro is a sports columnist, an author and most recently a podcaster. Thom uses his talents and experiences from years on radio to run his own podcast called Cigars & Curveballs. He’s hosted Cal Ripken, George Foreman, Joe Jacoby, Dusty Baker and most recently Max Scherzer. You can subscribe to Cigars & Curveball on ITunes or Google Play, or listen to the latest episode online at Washington Times. Andy and Thom discuss Thom’s early years growing up in Brooklyn four blocks from Ebbets Field. One of Thom’s earliest memories was leaving the stadium after a Dodgers game. He tells Andy “I grew up in a Brooklyn Dodgers house and then when they left a New York Mets house.” Andy and Thom discuss Thom’s early years growing up in Brooklyn four blocks from Ebbets Field. One of Thom’s earliest memories was leaving the stadium after a Dodgers game. He tells Andy “I grew up in a Brooklyn Dodgers house and then when they left a New York Mets house.” The ballpark and team were an integral part of the neighborhood. Thom Loverro tells Andy “Gil Hodges’ brother-in-law used to be my barber when I was a kid. He had a neighborhood barber shop because the players then lived in the neighborhood everybody else lived. They didn't make a ton of money like they do now. Then they would stay close to the neighbors.” Thom was eight when he watched the legendary field torn down. Sometime around 1965, Thom Loverro’s dad moved the family from Brooklyn to the Poconos, East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. He remembers it as very culturally different than Brooklyn. In fact, he recalls his first year in school there – 7th grade – “they sent me to speech therapy class because they thought there was something wrong with the way I talked and then they realize it was just my Brooklyn accent”. At the end of the day, Thom really loved growing up in the small town. Thom started college at Miami, but he had to leave school under a cloud when he burnt down half of his fraternity house with a cigar on accident. He eventually wound up at a Jesuit School, the University of Scranton, a big difference over Miami. The University town was very isolated but it was what he needed to really straighten himself out and get focused on what he needed to do. Thom decided he wanted to be a sports writer since he was 10. He is from a newspaper family and would read the sports sections of the New York Daily News and the New York Daily Mirror every night. He would read Dick Young and Jimmy Cannon and others like them. He started taking his dream seriously when he got to University of Scranton. After college, Thom worked for a couple of newspapers in Pennsylvania and then eventually wound up at the Baltimore Sun. In 1984 he started there as a news editor and reporter. He oversaw a bureau out in Howard County, and then started reporting by covering the state for the paper in Annapolis. It wasn’t until 1992, when he started working for the Washington Times that he realized his dream to be a sports writer. Andy asks Thom if it is unusual going from news to sports writing, and Thom said to some extent. He tells Andy “you don't see it happen much anymore but it was great for me . . . it's a lot easier right in sports than it is news - the rules are different - the news is much more accountable.” He goes on to say that his news training came in handy to cover “not just sports but all the issues that deal with sports such as the baseball strike in 1994 and the steroid stuff in baseball.” At the Washington Times, Thom covered the Washington Redskins for one year in 1992 – Joe Gibbs’ last year, and then went on to cover the Baltimore Oriolesuntil 1995. Andy refers to Thom as a baseball expert and remembers listening to him on radio and people always wanting to talk to him about baseball. Thom Loverro and Andy talk about how Washington eventually got its own baseball team. They almost had the Orioles,
In this edition of the Red Zone Sports Report we will play, in its duration, a "Locker Room Chat" narrated by Former Atlanta Falcons QB and current Falcons play by play radio guy David Archer. Also participating in the Locker Room Chat are 3X Super Bowl Champion Lineman from the WAshington Redskins, Joe Jacoby and Jeff Bostic. Jacoby and Bostic anchored the O-Line that mosts folks know as the "Hogs". The Hogs were the offensive line of the Washington Redskins of the National Football League during the 1980s and early 1990s. Renowned for their ability to control the line of scrimmage, the Hogs helped the Redskins win three Super Bowl championships (XVII, XXII and XXVI) under head coach Joe Gibbs.
