This is Bucket List Travel, a special series within the podcast Dr. Mary Travelbest Guide. This is Carolyn Ray, CEO and editor of JourneyWoman, a women's solo travel publication based in Toronto. I'm going to share some tips and advice about my hometown with you. I'm actually a sixth-generation Torontonian, and my daughter is a seventh-generation Torontonian. So this is my hometown, and I can tell you, if you're looking for an exciting, vibrant city, Toronto is it. We are, you might be surprised, the fourth largest city in North America, and very easy to get to from just about anywhere in the world. Toronto is a great getaway for those living in Canada and a steal for women coming from other countries because of our Canadian dollar. So you'll find a lot of value coming here for your money, I want to share with you a bit about how to get to Toronto, which may surprise you. Of course, you may know about Toronto Pearson Airport, our international airport, but we also have a smaller island airport called the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, which is right downtown. So if you can get a flight into Toronto Island, that's much easier. But if you are flying into Toronto, Pearson, we have a wonderful train called the UP Express, which will get you downtown in about 25 minutes. If you are arriving at Union Station, you can get right on our subway system, the TTC, the Toronto Transit Commission. And it's very, very easy to get around on the TTC. It's a U-shaped route that goes north, just kind of starts at Union Station, and goes up both ways. And then there's an east, west route across the city at Bloor Street, which is B, L, O, O, R, we're building some more subways. You'll notice that when you're in town, and because of that, I just want to speak to a little bit about safety on the subways. Toronto is a very large city, and I just want to encourage you to be very aware. I know everyone thinks Canadians are very nice, but I also just want to remind you to be very self-aware when you're on the subways and on public transit. For things to do in Toronto, my number one experience would be to go to Toronto Island. It's very easy to get there on a ferry, and you can take a ferry over for the day. You can ride a bike, enjoy the beaches, or even get on a boat. If you are looking for a place to stay, there are many different kinds of hotels in Toronto, but I will say one of my favorites is the Fairmont Royal York, which is right across from Union Station. But I also like some of our boutique hotels, the Gladstone, the Drake, the Broadview Hotel. These are very lovely, locally owned hotels, creative, artsy, with really great rooftop restaurants and great views. I'll end with some tips on places to eat that you may not know about. I really love Spanish food, so I wanted to recommend Madrina y tapas and Patria. Patria is on King West, which is a very popular place to go for bars and restaurants. The Distillery District is one of our historic areas in Toronto, it's a wonderful place to walk around and spend the day. And Madrina y tapas is one of my favorite restaurants there. There's also Yorkville, which is on at Bloor and Yonge Street. Kasa Moto is a Japanese restaurant that I would suggest there. And a secret you may not have heard of, this one is called Scaramouche, and it's a little bit farther north, but you can get wonderful views of the entire city. It's actually in a condominium, and you can see all of Toronto at night. It's lovely. And for those of us who like vegetarian food, it's Planta. There are two Planta locations in Toronto, maybe more now, great vegetarian menu. And of course, I must mention the St Lawrence Market, which has all, you know, all of the fresh food you could ever want. But also in the basement Manotas, which is a Spanish takeaway restaurant, and then also Busters, which is at the back of the St Lawrence Market, where you can get some wonderful seafood. Whatever you're doing in Toronto, I hope you have a great time. There's so much to do. There's so much to see, and I look forward to seeing you there. And if there's more information need about Toronto, please visit JourneyWoman.com. We've got lots of articles about the city. Thank you, Carolyn Ray and Journey Woman for this excellent episode. Shoot us a message on Instagram with your biggest takeaway @team_healey Show Notes: We've all had those group texts with our friends where we talked about taking a trip together like we used to do when we were younger. We go back and forth for days over schedules and destinations. We reminisce about the road trips in college and the last time we were all together. We talk about how fun it would be to have one more weekend with the boys. But before long, the conversation moves on and the planning dies on the vine. Nobody has the time to call the hotels, make the plans, contact the guides, rent the vehicles or organize the event. Life simply gets in the way. Isn't that a shame? But what if you had one friend who took the reins and actually put all of the plans in place for an epic weekend with the guys, and all you had to do was show up? Well, gentlemen, we got tired of talking about “someday” and decided to make the group text a reality! The result? The Weekend - Bourbon Trail. From April 14-17, 2023 we will be hosting an epic men's weekend retreat in Lexington, Kentucky where you'll have the opportunity to experience both the rugged and the refined as we give you a catered and guided taste of the nature, culture and cuisine of the “Athens of the West.” And the best part? All you have to do is show up. From your private room at the historic Campbell House Hotel you'll be treated to the best of Lexington with a day of private guided hiking in the natural paradise of Red River Gorge, dinner, drinks and socializing in the downtown Distillery District, tour and tasting through major label and craft distilleries along Kentucky's Bourbon Trail and, to cap it off, an afternoon at the world famous Keeneland where you'll take in the sights and sounds of America's most beloved thoroughbred racing venue during the heart of it's 15-day spring stakes meet. From hiking through the natural rock bridges and arches of the Red River Gorge to sipping bourbon and betting the ponies at Keeneland in your finest derby attire, we've designed a weekend that will capture both the rugged and the refined sides of the modern American man. Our aim is to provide you with a fully catered and guided experience so that you can focus on enjoying yourself, growing your tribe and taking in the absolute best of the Bluegrass State. We're capping enrollment at the first ten men, so do not wait to sign up. This will be an intimate event where you'll have the opportunity to break bread and share experiences with other men from all walks of life as you grow your tribe. You won't want to miss it. Our all inclusive weekend is $2,500. For more details and information contact Kristofor Healey or Nick Trubee. We can't wait to see you in Lexington! Until Monday…Out of role!

RD1 Spirits (you might know them as W. M. Tarr) has officially launched their new brand as of September 10th. W. M. Tarr was an excellent blended whiskey, but was always meant as a limited edition while the RD1 bourbons became ready. Now, they are. I talk with Barry Brinegar, National Brand Ambassador, face of the brand, and now a friend, all about the origins of Registered Distillery 1, Ashland, the brands that have come and gone from the label, what they're experimenting with next, and more. At time of publication, there might be some W. M. Tarr bottles still available, but your best bet is to visit the brand's center at Lexington's Distillery District. One other note: Barry is one of the hardest working people in the industry, and that's really saying something. In my mind, only Alex Clark at Fort Hamilton is at the same level in terms of pounding the pavement for his product. And that passion shows. W. M. Tarr was excellent. The RD1 Bourbons are excellent. Go visit and give them a try! _________________ Before we jump into the interview just a few quick notes: If you haven't joined the Patreon community yet, please consider doing so! I had the pleasure of attending OceanWise's Chowder Chowdown event in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the Distillery District last night. It was a fantastic time catching up with friends and enjoying great sustainable food. The OceanWise program is designed to support and highlight restaurants/chefs that follow sustainable seafood practices. I spoke with some people at the event who mentioned that there was a definite difference in sustainable seafood practice between independent restaurants and franchise restaurants. There is still plenty of work to do to get more sustainable in the future, but programs such as OceanWise will help consumers and restaurants achieve them faster. Do you follow a program similar to OceanWise? Share it in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group. Want to get started on living for a better Ocean? 7-24-18 Tonight we're talking with Justin LeVaughn, who is the Quality Assurance and Quality Control Officer at Ethereal Brewing in Lexington, KY. Justin does the microbiological and sensory analysis there, and maintains their yeast stocks. Justin started home brewing beer about 10 years ago in college, and combined his formal biology training with the hobby. He fell into the mead world about 4-5 years ago, and was hooked. His main passions are carbonated session meads and metheglins, but he regularly brews big fruit and spice meads. He loves experimenting with weird flavor combinations, and setting up trails with different flavors. Currently he is planning mixed-fermentation trials in meads and cysers. Ethereal Brewing first opened its doors about 4 years in the iconic Distillery District in Lexington Kentucky. Ethereal focuses on variety of styles, most notably French and Belgian beer styles, as will as mixed-culture fermentations. The James E. Pepper Distillery dominated the western edge of downtown Lexington, Kentucky for decades until it closed in 1958, and what was at one time the country's largest Bourbon distillery became a rundown eyesore. Several years ago, entrepreneurs bought several of the distillery's buildings and started building bars, a brewery, galleries and other businesses in the "Distillery District." Last December, Amir Peay's Georgetown Trading Co. brought distilling back to the district when he reopened the James E. Pepper Distillery using part of the original distillery building. This week, the distillery opened its doors to visitors for the first time to show off the heritage - and the future of the Pepper brand. Amir Peay joins us on WhiskyCast In-Depth. We'll also have details on Sazerac's Tennessee Whiskey plans, along with the opening next month of Stauning Whisky's new distillery in Denmark and much more!

On this episode of the podcast we're off to Montreal & Toronto! If you've listened to a lot of episodes of the podcast, you would know that we very rarely travel our home country of Canada, so when we had the opportunity to go to Montreal & Toronto, we were very excited about it! We spent our first 3 days of the trip in Montreal, and we take you with us as we explore downtown Montreal, the Old Town, and up Mont Royal. This episode also includes a conversation from our local friend, Karl-Philip Valle, who shares what he loves most about living in Montreal. While in Montreal, we had the opportunity to eat poutine, and explore so many awesome areas of the city. After 3 days in Montreal, we headed on to Toronto where we spent 5 days exploring the city. We explored downtown, Kensington Market, the CN Tower and the Harbourfront, and the Distillery District, among other areas. We had so much fun checking out awesome cafes and eating great food and immersing ourselves in Canada's largest and most multi-cultural city. We had the opportunity to meet up with friends and family. Finally, Amanda shares about her solo adventure to Niagara Falls and how the met her expectations and was a great day of exploring! Enjoy! Kyle Carsten Wyatt is the managing editor of The Walrus, a doctor of English Literature, and the first American to be on the show. He's also Barry's old boss. We spoke with Kyle about the agony and ecstasy of growing up in Nebraska, moving to Hogtown in his twenties, and why living in the Distillery District sucks. He also let Barry grill him about the ostensible shortcomings of Canada's most awarded magazine, what new editor-in-chief Jonathan Kay brings to the table, and—surprise!—why Toronto is amazing.
We also talk about building habits, condos and the theatres near by them and what to do other than limitless complaint. Adrienne and Jacob debate an idea for a show.
