Psychedelics Then and Now with Zach Leary: Episode 01 - East Forest: Music for Mushrooms This is the first episode in the rebranded Psychedelics Then and Now Podcast with Zach Leary. Formerly the MAPS Podcast - the show will continue to bring you insightful and entertaining interviews with some of the great minds within the psychedelic community. The podcast is a collaboration between Zach Leary and Psychedelics Today.  We relaunch with an all new episode featuring East Forest, a multidisciplinary artist, producer, and ceremony guide. Since 2008, East Forest's “lush” (Rolling Stone) and “blissful” (NPR) music has blended ambient, neoclassical, electronic, and avant-pop to explore sound as a tool for inner journeys and consciousness expansion. The project's latest endeavor is the feature-length film Music for Mushrooms, a narrative documentary showcasing the transformative power of psychedelics, music, and community. The accompanying Official Documentary Soundtrack is an immersive album featuring tracks recorded during live psilocybin ceremonies. East Forest's extensive catalog includes over 30 albums and notable collaborations with artists such as Ram Dass, Jon Hopkins, Laraaji, Dead Prez, Nick Mulvey, Peter Broderick, Max Cooper, and DJ ANNA. The project has performed in over 18 countries at major festivals and venues including BottleRock, Beyond The Pale, Mysteryland, Wilderness and SXSW.

Around 2000 something big happened in electronic music: a group of new artists, a bunch of misfits from all over the world mixed a little bit of techno, a little bit of the 80s, some new romantic vibes, and a bit of punk attitude, and seemingly almost by accident all came together in what at the time was called “Electro". I was lucky enough to have been part of that movement with my track Sunglasses At Night, but to me the artists that really always nailed it, the ones that stood out as being very special were Miss Kittin and The Hacker. And today I’m very lucky to talk to Miss Kittin.We had an amazing conversation, we talked about her entire career, including 20+ years as a global DJ, the electro years and everything else that came afterwards, she continued to make amazing records with The Martinez Brothers, Michael Myer, DJ Anna and more, and we touched upon a lot of interesting material, including the making of a song like Frank Sinatra, which for me is one of the best ever. We talked about Aphex Twin (as usual), Jeff Mills, Marcel Dettman, and about maintaining purity and artistic integrity, about the intention behind music, and the Gigollo records era. What I found was a very thoughtful, creative and sensitive artist that had done a lot of work, thinking it through on their own and more than anything had just made incredible original music, so I hope you enjoy this, I really loved it, meant a lot to me. Take Me to a Higher Ground…   !!!! Warning: some expletives and drug references !!!   Set could have been called “15 Shades of House” or “What is House without Big Piano Keys?” But I thought I shouldn’t pass on the opportunity to give Blonde and Grant Nelson a some exposure..   14 good tracks … 13 from the last quarter of 2014.. Proud of that!   In the past few months, I have been utterly bored with Soulful and, to a certain extent, with with any non-progressive house. "Take Me to a Higher Ground" reunites me with the genre..   What changed my mind?   -  Mixing it up between true soulful gems and edgier tunes with some rasp built-in gave depth and colours to my set.   - Inviting House royalty to the party did help! Grant Nelson, Richard Earnshaw, Sandy Rivera, Kings of Tomorrow, Spiritchaser, Eric Kupper and Miguel Migs.. Need I say more?   - Finally finding great, very recent tracks! “Higher Ground”, “Need 2 Know”, “Bang, Bang” and “Special”… The latter 3 released in the last fortnight and all of them in my 2014 House top five..   The pleasure to discover new tracks, associated to the relief of not having to include old ones, rekindled my interest.   There you have it.. Martin Luther   Highlights:   “Higher Ground”:  I first heard the track on Grant Nelson’s housecall.  Grant had done a private edit of the Blonde’s tunes, it was clear it had anthem potential. You get a mash on my 3 favourite remixes. I am sure more will come, too much potential for other producers not to have a go. Big keys, heavy bass and an outstanding melody line.   “Need 2 Know” from Richard Earnshaw, heard it first unreleased on Jask’s ThaiSoul podcast on MixCloud.. Immediate love. Earnshaw is one of the top five house producers and never, never disappoints. As to the vocalist, Cassandra London, absolute respect. Production is immaculate.   “Bang, Bang”: Sandy Rivera, April and the KOT outfit.. Sandy and April, not sure who is the muse of the other, but very much like the previous track, this tune is intricate and goes way beyond the melody line.. I needed a wider appeal than a purely melodic one to regain interest in Soulful House.. Grant Nelson, Richard Earnshaw and Sandy Rivera just provided it.. As for April, what a vocalist! Listen every word is expressed not just sung.   “Don't Look Any Further”: old tune, new take.. My wife was cringing a bit with the tenor sax.. I had to tell her that the sugary, well-know tune needed the edge.  The sax solo is not too long and without it.. It would just be another cover of a classic..   “Special” from Billon feat Maxine Ashley.. I discovered the track on Housecall # 120.. Must have been a private edit because the track was only released on the 7th of November.. I waited all that time for I wanted to use a legal cut and check out the different remixes.. So catchy! And the CamelPhat remix is perfect.. I could not resist to fuse in Grant Nelson’s edit but left the Housecall jingle to acknowledge the source. I believe I did a decent job of fusing both version.. and yes this tune is F@ckin’ Special!!!   With “Secret” we delve back into classic but recent soulful house. A track, which I think is more for the dancefloor than just podcasting.    Jumping quickly straight into a bit of U-ness and Jedset with their Mandela’s tribute to steer the set back to true soulful   “Paradise Row” from Spiritchaser.. The only relatively old tune of the set ( 2012), an old time favourite of mine and I felt I deserved dropping a classic by that time. I have to mention the vocalist, Emily Cooke, full respect!   “High Enough” , new take on an old classic.. Inaki Garcia, whom I have played a lot of tracks, gives the tuen an edge it needed to make it relevant.   “My Feelin’” from AM2PM. I discovered AM2PM on Housecall recently with a mini mix they did. It blew me away. AM2PM is a collaboration unit where the amazing singer adlib on instrumental tracks, this is House at its absolute finest.. Do to miss and go to their soundcloud page to hear how creative and amazing they sound.   “Missing You” Kupper’s Director’s Cut of the Frankie Knuckles classic..  The track would not have made the playlist if it had not been for all the rest.. This is what I mean by being bored with Soulful.. As it is and by the time it dropped, I felt it was perfectly suited to play it.. It is really all about mixing it up…   Kissin’ and Huggin’… Old househeads will immediately recognize Peter Heller’s Big Love, Boy Orlando inspiringly twisted it to Kissin’ to Huggin and Xtian had to play around with the Phill Weeks sample to had the personal naughty touch.   Last track “Let the Music Play”.. fitting ending and loving the swag, the production, the “now” feel.   Just by the length of the highlights you can see I like this set.. Give it a fair go, this is a little journey into the various colours ( hence the 15 shades) of current melodic House Music.   It will grow on you.   Next up could be another soulful though most probably will return to progressive before embarking into TranceMission Episode 03   A bientôt   Xtian

Sweden’s very own Christian Smith has been soaking up the sounds of house and techno since the late 80s when Sven Vath first took the scene by storm. Since that moment his life has been dedicated to a vision which he has shared with the global techno community. Jet-setting DJ and label boss, Christian has achieved a lot in a career spanning over 20 years, with his imprint Tronic holding a special place in techno circles. Christian set the label up back in 1994 when he was just 21, and ever since then it has been a bastion of quality music. Diverse in it’s output the label has released the likes of Carl Craig, Laurent Garnier, Marco Bailey, Hobo and Jay Lumen and has been seen as a leading force in shaping a less purist techno style. It was also notably one of the first labels to embrace sounds from house and techno to create records that DJs from both scenes would play.As a producer we have seen Christian be as diverse as his own label, with releases on a vast array of labels including Drumcode, Ovum, Bedrock and Renaissance. Having recently celebrated the 20th Anniversary of Tronic and off the back or a world album tour, Christian certainly doesn’t seem to be slowing. We caught up with him after his performance for the We Are FSTVL after party here at Egg a couple weeks back. This mix was recorded at the massive We Are FSTVL After Party here at Egg London. How was it?I have the privilege of playing regularly at Egg as its the main venue I play for in London. However this was the first time of this year as my schedule has been crazy busy and I could not manage before. I am very comfortable there and know the crowd so for me it was a lot of fun. It always is . The crowd is very open minded and not pretentious, great energy, you can play longer sets, and the staff is a pleasure to work with. Your imprint Tronic reached an impressive 100 releases last year. What would you say the ethos of the label is and is there anything you look for in particular when signing a record / artist? The ethos of the label is to release open mind underground house and techno. I have never been a purist and I think this is one of the reasons why the label is still doing so well after 20 years. Its easy to always do the same, but its tougher when you play around with different styles.  If i like the music I'll sign it.Techno recently has seen a huge surge in popularity. What do you think has contributed to this and do you think the techno crowd has changed? Techno has become 'cool' again in recent years. I think the fact that it has slowed down to the same speed of house has helped it popularity for sure. I'm not a fan of hypes or trends, but can tell you that techno has always had a strong global presence and this will not change for a long time to come. Honest house and techno will always be around! We’re now in festival season, what’s your personal favourite to play at, both past and present? Oh thats a tough one to answer. I personally really enjoy playing at festivals in Japan because the people there go strictly for the music rather than the drugs. So the vibe is immense and the fans are very loyal which is something you don't get in scenes like London that are very hype driven.  I also love playing in Argentina. When it comes to festivals in Europe i really enjoyed Exit, in Serbia and of course Awakenings in Holland. Though I heard that We are FSTVL is also wicked. Hopefully next year! :) What’s coming up for both you and the label? New material from the following artists: Ambivalent, Dave Angel, DJ Anna, Wehbba, Harry Romero, and and album by myself. My wife is pregnant and we are getting our second child in October, so I'm diligently working on my next artist album and hope to have this finished before. And finally, who would you love to collaborate with if you got the chance? I would like to do something with Richie Hawtin. He is without a doubt a huge inspiration to me. We have been mates for around 20 years now and this guy is a mad workaholic and genius. Its just a little sad that he become too big and doing too many projects so that he does not devote much time to what got him here in the first place, the music productions. DJ Anna is one of Brazil’s finest musical exports, now recognised as one of the most exciting female tech-house/techno DJs and producers of our era.
