Send us a textCurious about the moral underpinnings of leftist politics? Join us as we sit down with Devin Gouré and Charles Dashings from the Moral Minority Podcast to navigate the often-neglected realm of meta-ethics within Marxist traditions. We challenge the pervasive moral skepticism and cynicism that could derail emancipatory politics, emphasizing the need for coherent moral frameworks that go beyond mere emotional reactions. This episode is not just about ideological discussions but also a call to action for leftist thinkers to engage with philosophical questions that shape political motivations and actions.Hope and ethics in history take center stage as we scrutinize the pitfalls of a purely dialectical approach to progress. We juxtapose Kant's optimistic outlook with Adorno's focus on individual rights, questioning the very rationale for hope in revolutionary endeavors. Our conversation reveals how different philosophical traditions offer unique perspectives on historical progression and ethics, urging listeners to reconsider the value and ethical dimensions of hope in the face of past revolutionary failures and ongoing social struggles. Our exploration continues with an examination of moral intuitions, ethical frameworks, and their implications for liberal left ideologies. By contrasting Kantian and utilitarian perspectives, we shed light on the contradictions and challenges posed by universal moral laws in addressing issues like racism and gender equality. We also delve into the complex relationship between cultural norms, moral pluralism, human rights, and international law, questioning the very foundations of rights in liberal societies. This episode promises a thought-provoking journey through the vast landscape of ethics and morality, challenging conventional wisdom and inviting listeners to reflect on their own moral intuitions and political beliefs. The unconscious mind is incredibly powerful. It has the capacity to process information more quickly and more efficiently than our conscious mind. But it can be prone to errors and biases. Emotional resistance clouds our intuitive wisdom. We're more likely to be misled by feelings if we're putting a lot of energy into our sense of self. Knowing a little about how the mind works helps us to see more clearly. This is a recording of a talk given to Insight North East in June 24.

OK, we are not experts nor PhDs so most of this is probably not technically correct, but the math is so complicated and the concepts so complicated, that we thought it would be good to just get some intuition on what is happening. So this is a quick talk that summarizes readings from so many different sources about the history of AI from the 1950s all the way to January 2024 or so. It is really hard to keep up but much harder without some intuition about what is happening. We cover expert systems, the emergence of neural networks, Convolution Neural Networks, and Recurrent Neural Networks. The Attention is All You Need paper led to Transformers and then finally some intuition on how such a simple idea, that is training on things can lead to emergent and unexpected behaviors, and finally, some intuition on how Generative images work. You can go to YouTube to see the slides we are using at YouTube and more information at Tongfamily.com Chapters: 23:25 Attention is all you need Transformers 27:36 But it's too Simple! Check the website here: http://enlites.com/   Dr. Joshua Knobe is Professor of Philosophy, Linguistics and Psychology at Yale University. A lot of his recent research has been concerned with the impact of people's moral judgments on their intuitions about questions that might initially appear to be entirely independent of morality (questions about intention, causation, etc.).   In this episode, we talk about topics in experimental philosophy. We discuss how experimental philosophy relates to science. We talk about the relationship between belief and knowledge. We discuss how norm violations interact with causal judgment. We talk about the “true self”, and how moral beliefs influence beliefs about the “true self”, and vice-versa. We discuss how people conceptualize happiness, and how they relate it to moral character. We talk about “folk morality”, and whether people tend to believe in objective moral truths. We discuss people's philosophical intuitions, with a focus on free will, and how much they vary cross-culturally. We discuss what explains the different views of philosophers, and if they stem from individual differences in cognition. We talk about how moral judgments influence intuitions in folk psychology, and we discuss whether moral judgments influence the production of scientific knowledge. Finally, we discuss if the way people interact socially influences how they construe truth, and if political polarization changes our understanding of truth. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: PER HELGE LARSEN, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, OLAF ALEX, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, PHIL KAVANAGH, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, FERGAL CUSSEN, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, ROMAIN ROCH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, NELLEKE BAK, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS FRY, FRANCA BORTOLOTTI, GABRIEL PONS CORTÈS, URSULA LITZCKE, SCOTT, ZACHARY FISH, TIM DUFFY, SUNNY SMITH, JON WISMAN, DANIEL FRIEDMAN, WILLIAM BUCKNER, PAUL-GEORGE ARNAUD, LUKE GLOWACKI, GEORGIOS THEOPHANOUS, CHRIS WILLIAMSON, PETER WOLOSZYN, DAVID WILLIAMS, DIOGO COSTA, ANTON ERIKSSON, CHARLES MOREY, ALEX CHAU, AMAURI MARTÍNEZ, CORALIE CHEVALLIER, BANGALORE ATHEISTS, LARRY D. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Linda Gray, Legendary Actress, Star, “Dallas”, “Ladies of the 80's: A Divas Christmas” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, Linda Gray, is a beloved, multi-award winning actress, director and author who became a global superstar with her portrayal of ‘Sue Ellen', in the blockbuster TV series “Dallas”, for which she won numerous international awards and was nominated for 2 Golden Globe Awards, an Emmy Award and 4 Soap Opera Digest Awards.  But her career extends far beyond “Dallas”.   On the big screen, she's appeared in many movies including “Dogs”, “Oscar”, “Star of Jaipur”, “Expecting Mary”, “The Flight of the Swan”, “Hidden Moon”, “Intuitions” and “Wally's Will”, which won her 2 Best Actress awards at the USA Film Festival and the North Hollywood Film Festival.  And she's starred in dozens of TV shows like “Melrose Place”, “The Bold and the Beautiful”  and “Models Inc.”, and many TV movies including “Murder in Peyton Place”, “Haywire”, “The Wild and the Free”, “Not in Front of the Children”, “Moment of Truth: Why My Daughter?”, “Accidental Meeting”, “When the Cradle Falls”, “Perfect Match”, and of course, the 2 “Dallas” TV movies, “J.R. Returns” and “War of the Ewings”.    On the stage, our guest starred in the world premiere production, in London, of “Terms of Endearment”, AND in the West End production of “The Graduate”, in which she starred on Broadway for a limited engagement.  In 2014 she returned to the London stage to star in the Christmas pantomime “Cinderella”, playing the Fairy Godmother.  She's also starred onstage in “The Vagina Monologues”, “Agnes of God” and “Love Letters”.   In 1982, she was named Woman of the Year by the Hollywood Radio & Television Society.   In 2013, she was included in People Magazine's list of the Most Beautiful Women in the world.   And in 2015, she published her highly compelling, emotionally powerful and inspirational memoir entitled, “The Road to Happiness is Always Under Construction”, which became an instant best seller.  The book chronicles our guest's amazing life journey, through childhood illness, family trauma, and the many challenges of an ultimately triumphant career and fulfilling personal life, bringing her to a place of honesty, serenity and joy.    And I'm very excited to announce that on December 2, our guest's highly anticipated, brand new TV movie, entitled “Ladies of the 80s: A Divas Christmas” will be premiering on the Lifetime channel.   This is a delicious comedy in which our guest co-stars with Loni Anderson, Morgan Fairchild, Donna Mills and Nicollette Sheridan, who play 5 glamorous soap opera queens who reunite to shoot the final Christmas episode of their long-running TV series.   And if all of that weren't enough, our guest is also a highly respected philanthropist.  She's been very involved with the Best Buddies Program for people with intellectual challenges, as well as Meals on Wheels and the Force For Good Foundation.  And for 10 years, from 1997 to 2007, she served as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador to promote women's rights, and the health of women and children. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ To see more about Linda Gray, go to:https://www.lindagrayofficial.comhttps://www.instagram.com/lindagray #LindaGray    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Mein Unternehmen musste bittere Konsequenzen tragen. Aber weißt du was? Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: An Exercise to Build Intuitions on AGI Risk, published by Lauro Langosco on June 7, 2023 on LessWrong. Epistemic status: confident that the underlying idea is useful; less confident about the details, though they're straightforward enough that I expect they're mostly in the right direction. TLDR: This post describes a pre-mortem-like exercise that I find useful for thinking about AGI risk. It is the only way I know of to train big-picture intuitions about what solution attempts are more or less promising and what the hard parts of the problem are. The (simple) idea is to iterate between constructing safety proposals ('builder step') and looking for critical flaws in a proposal ('breaker step'). Introduction The way that scientists-in-training usually develop research taste is to smash their heads against reality until they have good intuitions about things like which methods tend to work, how to interpret experimental results, or when to trust their proof of a theorem. This important feedback loop is mostly absent in AGI safety research, since we study a technology that does not exist yet (AGI). As a result, it is hard to develop a good understanding of which avenues of research are most promising and what the hard bits of the problem even are. The best way I know of to approximate that feedback loop is an iterative exercise with two steps: 1) propose a solution to AGI safety, and 2) look for flaws in the proposal. The idea is simple, but most people don't do it explicitly or don't do it often enough. Multiple rounds of this exercise tend to bring up details about one's assumptions and predictions that would otherwise stay implicit or unnoticed. Writing down specific flaws of a specific proposal helps ground more general concepts like instrumental convergence or claims like ‘corrigibility is unnatural'. And after some time, the patterns in the flaws (the ‘hard bits') become visible on their own. I ran an earlier version of this exercise as a workshop (an important component is to discuss your ideas with others, so a workshop format is convenient). Here are the slides. The exercise The exercise consists of two phases: a builder phase in which you write down a best guess / proposal for how we might avoid existential risk from AGI, and a breaker phase in which you dig into the details until you understand how the proposal fails. Importantly, in the context of this exercise the only thing that counts is your own inside view, that is your own understanding of the technical or political feasibility of the proposal. You might have thoughts like “There's smart people who have thought about this much longer than I have, and they think X; why should I disagree?”. Put that aside for now; the point is to develop your own views, and that works best when you don't think too much about other people's views except to inform your own thoughts. Builder phase Write down the proposal: a plausible story for how we might avoid human extinction or disempowerment due to AGI. It doesn't need to be very detailed yet; that comes in the breaker phase. The proposal will look very different depending on the assumptions you're starting with. If you're relatively optimistic about AGI risk, the proposal might look very much like things continuing to go on the current trajectory. Write down how you expect the future to go in very broad terms: if we build AGI, how do we know it'll behave like we want it to? If we don't build AGI, how come? If you're more pessimistic: what's the most plausible way in which we could move things from their current trajectory? Is it plausible AI labs can coordinate to not build AGI? Or is there a technical solution that seems promising? The builder phase is complete when you have a proposal (can be as short as a paragraph) that seems to you like it stands a decent chance ...

How does one apply the feminine intelligence and feminine wisdom to the area of business and the cycles and seasons? It starts with coming home to self and understanding your own cycle. Whether you're bleeding or not, whether you're in touch with the lunar cycles or not, we can't escape what is innate within nature. If we are always living on the cycle of the masculine business structure like the 9-5, which is based on the testosterone cycle, and when it comes to allowing nature to be in business especially for entrepreneurs, Kate asks, “How is your cycle moving through your business?”. Your business is always reflecting your energy and your healing. If we are faced with our cycle in a time where we need more rest but the 9-5 is telling us get up and get to work by 8 and come home by 6 PM, the first thing that Kate would change is how we work with our time and our cycle moving with your flow. Kate Murphy is a Canadian entrepreneur, founder of The Feminine Code, Co-Founder and former CEO of The Play Magnus Group, Investor, Business Advisor as well as an Initiated Priestess. Kate's work is focused on raising the feminine - both through the path of the priestess and through business. She works with women and entrepreneurs around the world to both start-up and scale-up by combining the sacred with strategy. As an entrepreneur at heart, at the age of 23, Kate co-founded Canada's largest national dance convention, iDance, while earning both her BBA and MBA between Canada and France. As a priestess, she walks the path of priestess with women in her 1:1 mentorship containers as well. Over the last 16 years, she has also been deeply immersed in her spiritual path, which began in the yogic traditions and eventually led her to the path of her Celtic heritage as a priestess. Her passions are on both sides of the spectrum: the power of masculine strategy and the mysticism of divine feminine wisdom. It is her life's work to help guide and weave the feminine and masculine together, in business and inner worlds.   What we discuss: 01:10 – Introducing Kate 03:08 – The Time of the Feminine for Kate 04:15 – The Ascension 08:58 – The Feminine Wisdom in Business 10:54 – The Feminine Wisdom in Business… For Men 13:31 – The Feminine Code in Workplace Culture, Morale, and Productivity 21:25 – Tips for Tracking Three Months of Cycles 22:34 – Guidance for Men and Women in Start-Ups 24:12 – Kate's Visions, Intuitions, and Revelations in Business 28:38 – Women's Sense of Undeserving in Business 31:19 – Kate's Journey of Transformation 34:13 – Women's Fear to Present Themselves 36:46 – How to Value Women's Services 38:01 – Kate's Steps for Women Starting their Business 41:46 – Running the Feminine Code 43:44 – Feeling Guilty 49:04 – Kate in Behalf of the Divine Mother 50:59 – Where to Find Kate   www.globalsisterhood.org/wow Worth of a Woman - A month-long study group and woman's initiation to heal the patriarchal wound of unworthiness, reclaim the divinity of your desires and step into your self-worth in every dimension of your life. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Some Intuitions Around Short AI Timelines Based on Recent Progress, published by Aaron Scher on April 11, 2023 on LessWrong. tldr: I give some informal evidence and intuitions that point toward AGI coming soon. These include thinking about how crazy the last year has been, beliefs from those in major AI labs, and progress on MMLU. Intro This post is intended to be a low-effort reference I can point people to when I say I think there is some evidence for short AI timelines. I might describe the various bits of evidence and intuitions presented here as “intuitions around short AI timelines based on recent progress” (though perhaps there are better terms). They are not a thorough model like Ajeya's; insofar as somebody is using multiple models when putting together a timelines estimate, I think it would be unreasonable to place less than 20% or greater than 95% weight on extrapolation from current systems and recent progress. In the spirit of being informal, you can use whatever definition of AGI you like. I mostly use AGI to refer to something like “an AI system which can do pretty much all the human cognitive tasks as well or better than humans (~99% of tasks people in 2023 do).” Some evidence I (Aaron) started following AI and AI existential safety around the beginning of 2022; it's been a little over a year. Some of that time was my understanding catching up with advances from the past couple years, but there have also been major advances. Some major advances since I've been paying attention: Chinchilla paper popularized the scaling laws that were already known to some, there was some DALL-E and related stuff which was cool, CICERO happened which I didn't follow but indicates we're probably going to train the AIs to do all the dangerous stuff (see also Auto-GPT and Chaos-GPT, or GPT-4 getting plugins within 2 weeks of release, as more recent updates in this saga of indignity), ChatGPT shows how much more usable models are with RLHF (popularizing methods that have been known for a while), Med-PaLM gets a passing score on the US medical licensing exam (also tons of other PaLM and Flan-PaLM results I haven't followed but which seem impressive). LLaMA and Alpaca take powerful capabilities from compute-efficient (and over) training and hand them to the public. GPT-4 blows the competition out of the water on many benchmarks. I probably missed a couple big things (including projects which honorably didn't publicly push SOTA, 1, 2); the list is probably a bit out of order; I've also included things from 2023; but man, that sure is a year of progress. I don't expect there are all that many more years with this much progress before we hit AGI — maybe 3-12 years. More importantly, I think this ~15 month period, especially November 2022-now, has generated a large amount of hype and investment in AI research and products. We seem to be on a path such that — in every future year before we die — there is more talent+effort+money working on improving AI capabilities than there was in 2022. I hold some hope that major warning shots and/or regulation would change this picture, in fact I think it's pretty likely we'll see warning shots beyond those we have already seen, but I am not too optimistic about what the response will be. As crazy as 2022 was, we should be pretty prepared for a world that gets significantly crazier. I find it hard to imagine that we could have all that many more years that look like 2022 AI progress-wise, especially with significantly increased interest in AI. A large amount of the public thinks AGI is near. I believe these people are mostly just thinking about how good current systems (GPT-4) are and informally extrapolating [image description: A Twitter poll from Lex Fridman where he asks “When will superintelligent general AI (AGI) arrive?” There are 270,00...

EA - Some intuitions about fellowship programs by Joel Becker

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Some intuitions about fellowship programs, published by Joel Becker on January 16, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Epistemic status: not sure how reliable my intuition is, but I do have more experience with these programs than most. TL;DR Making sure >30 participants have regular opportunities to spontaneously gather, active programming, basic food and medical amenities, and common knowledge about visit dates hugely increases the benefit of residential fellowship programs. For transparency, I should note a stronger, less confident belief of mine that I will not defend here. My instinct is that all of the above factors are not merely beneficial but necessary in order for these programs to be worth their cost (assuming that their goals are indeed as I describe below). I am aware that some factors come with large time or money costs. If these costs are prohibitive, so be it. Background I ran one of these programs and participated in two others. So what follows is a post-mortem of my own mistakes as much as it is feedback for organizers and recommendations for funders and organizers considering future initiatives. It's worth emphasizing that I got lots out of each of these experiences, and that I feel very grateful to fellow participants and organizers! Fellowship programs I take the goals of these programs to be some combination of: Increasing short-term productivity, Generating counterfactual collaborations/relationships, and Moving participants towards more impactful careers at an accelerated rate. I take the method of these programs to be some combination of: Hosting people who largely do not know each other in a new physical environment for a small number of months, Covering the cost of accommodation, co-working space, and travel to-and-from, and Organizing social and professional activities. Things that I am not talking about include: Communities where many people already know one another, and Themed retreats, or other temporary communities organized around a professional aptitude/cause area/etc. Number of participants My intuition is that hosting 35 participants is much, much better than hosting 25. Not only in total, but on a per-participant basis. Evidence for the directional claim: In the program I ran, the overwhelming majority of reported positive impact anecdotes came during the ~50% of the time we hosted >30 participants. In fact, I need to get to the joint-30th most subjectively impressive anecdote before finding one I think came about during the time we hosted 30 participants, shared spaces were often packed in evenings, participants participated in and ran a wider variety of well-attended activities, the office felt alive, and work felt urgent. Among other ~vibes~ based on discussions with participants, my time as a participant, and my time as an organizer. 30 might feel like an arbitrary cut-off: readers might think that I don't mean this literally. In fact, I am tempted to defend this close-to-literally. One piece of evidence: in my experience, there are almost no spontaneous gatherings of most participants below 25; these gatherings become somewhat more likely beyond this, then shoot up around 30. They continue increasing beyond 35, albeit more slowly. My guess is that the effect runs through two mechanisms: The chance that someone's professional experiences are highly complementary with your own increases sharply around this point. Maybe because some small clusters of people with shared interests choose to participate at the same time — although I think this was largely not the case. The chance that someone will join you if you spontaneo...

I am pleased to offer Free Psychic Readings Friday with Special Guest Psychic Medium Scarlett Porretta this Friday, 7/15/22 from 7-8 p.m. EST.   Scarlet lives in Ontario, Canada and I had the pleasure of first meeting our guest when she came on my show last year!  Scarlet is an Intuitive Psychic Medium, and when we instantly connected with one another I knew that I wanted to bring her onto our show to share her gifts with members of our audience!   As a child, Scarlet was able to see spirits, read energy, and forsee events.  For many years, having these abilities frightened Scarlet since she feared being judged by others.  Eventually, Scarlet came to accept her intuitive abilities as she followed her calling and as the universe pulled her in the direction of helping others.  Whether offering guidance or speaking to decased loved ones on the other side, our guest seeks to bring clarity and peace to those who work with her spiritual practice.   Guest website:  www.scarlets-whispers.com.  I look forward to taking questions from members of our audience with Scarlet!

This is a Guided Meditation episode about one of the most perplexing aspects of creativity: Intuition. What is it and how do we engage it more effectively? This meditation is based on a technique I've been developing called: Intuition Mapping. Grab a cup of coffee / tea, and give this guided meditation a test drive to see what compulsions are pushing and pulling you. Some helpful notes: • Motivations push you. Intentions direct you. Intuitions pull you. • To find your motivations ask: what is pushing you? • To find your intentions ask: what are you pushing yourself toward? • To find your intuitions ask: what is pulling you? What is gently tugging at the fabric of your being? • Intuitions often feel like something is pulling your neural network toward a certain direction, it's a feeling to move in a certain direction. One which you often can't always explain with logic. --------- Become a patron of the show on my Patreon and gain access gain access to exclusive episodes, including the Kurt Cobain series, Creativity Tips, and all the Episode Exclusives: https://www.patreon.com/mjdorian --------- Connect with me on social media for all the newest updates: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mjdorian/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/mjdorian ---------- Cover Art: Hesiod & The Muse (1891) by Gustave Moreau ---------- Written & Produced by MJDorian. Empaths have a tought time in this world. They are very different.  It is difficult/impossible for those who are not empaths to understand them. Introverterted----empaths are easily overwhelmed by their internal and external environments: loud noises, large public venues, bright liights, high and low temperatures, unfamiliar odors, heat, humidity, cold, strangers, crowded spaces like elevators, brash extroverts, parties, weddings, formal dinners, densely populated noisy public events.  Empaths hide inside of themselves for protection and solace. They cry in private---tears run down their faces like tiny salty rivers. Empaths have very few individuals in whom they can confide. Empaths intuit the family secrets. They remain mute on this subject, knowing that they will be dismissed as histrionic, overly0sensitive or psychologically disturbed. Empaths are very gifted at "reading" individuals they meet, even strangers passing by. This is a great gift that they possess from their earliest days. They know if someone is greedy, secretive, craven, vile, enamored, scorned, fulminating, tawdry, crooked, scheming, cheating, unsavory, enlightened. Don't expect others, even individuals you know uite well to understand your high sensitivities, clear perceptions, your need for solitude and rest.  Self kindness activities for the empath include: Move at your own pace; don't let anyone rush you. Many children are herded around and forced to move quickly by other family members. This is particularly stressful to empaths, whose nerves are frayed, stomach roiled when they are forced to hurry mindlessly. It is distressing and disorienting. Develop daily routines that work well for you and that orient you into the parasympathetic nervous system and out of the fight or flight sympathetic mode.  The practice of diaphragmatic breathing offers you an entree into the parasympathetic state. Diaphragmatic breathing activates the vagus nerve, one of the longest nerves in our system. The awakening of the vagus nerve puts you into the parasympathetic--the calming, healing, restorative part of the nervous system.  Learn to appreciate your solitude, unedited writing, beautiful music, basic yoga poses like Happy Baby, movement and exercise that works for you.  Click the link below to view my new print book: Recovering and Healing After the Narcissist on Amazon. https://tinyurl.com/2p92ymam Click the link below to access the Mental Health News Radio Network,  an excellent series of shows with podcasters on every facet of mental health.
