It's a multi-day competition that brings together hundreds of veterans with disabilities from across the country. And the Sea Change podcast dedicated its latest episode to some of this summer's hottest books. Donald "DJ" Johnson is the percussionist for, and one third of, the Texas trio Khruangbin, which released its fourth studio LP called A La Sala in April. The band that draws inspiration from funk, soul and psychedelic rock made all across the globe is currently touring the states and playing A La Sala front-to-back. They also play Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Tennessee June 14. Hear Johnson describe dusting off the rust to prepare for touring this year, how the band continues to grow and connect with each record, how festival sets necessarily differ from Khruangbin headlining shows and an item he's learned he cannot live without while traveling.
Musical trio Khruangbin is well known for their blend of classic soul, dub, rock, and psychedelia; the group emerging in 2010 and going strong fourteen years on. They've played 18 tours to nearly half a million people, selling out iconic venues such as Red Rocks and Radio City Music Hall, the latter twice. Two weeks ago, they released their fifth album A La Sala, and just last week they took to the stage at Coachella. They have a music-forward approach to their craft, and the group's drummer DJ Johnson told Newstalk ZB's Jack Tame that it's been that way since the start. “The music always comes first,” he said. Johnson said that the music determines everything that happens in the backend, album titles being one example. “We've been asked like, ‘what's the next album gonna be called?' And it's like, well, we don't know yet because the music doesn't exist yet.” They've described the album as a creative homecoming of sorts, bassist Laura Lee telling Tame that while the band has grown and evolved, touring the world and playing stadiums, it's nice to strip everything back. “The amount of voices and opinions and, you know, tugs and pulls in various directions have grown, and I think there was a desire to just get back to square one.” A La Sala is free of collaborations, guests, and features, and although they are proud of the collaborations they've made, Lee said it felt like so long since they'd made music just the three of them. “As we were getting back to that place, we realised that the creative was in less, and not in more.” Johnson said that while it does have the same kind of magic as when they were first making music, the growth and evolution they've gone through has impacted it. “We went back to more or less the way that we used to approach the material when we first started, but with a renewed sense and a maturity in which we're approaching it. This week we're joined by USC Faculty colleagues Alison Trope, Clinical Professor of Communication, and DJ Johnson, Associate Professor of Practice, Cinematic Arts. Together they direct the Critical Media Project (CMP), a free media literacy web resource for educators and students (ages 8-21) that enhances young people's critical thinking and empathy, and builds on their capacities to advocate for change around questions of identity. The website includes around 700 pieces of media and wraparound pedagogical resources that focus on seeing across difference, in order to surface questions that can then be addressed in the open. It can be used independently, and is also aligned with the Common Core for use in schools. Throughout this episode we'll listen to media examples with Alison & DJ to discuss how CMP works and how it can be used.Alison and DJ begin by telling us about their own media backgrounds, and how they reconcile their own positionality in these issues of identity when teaching and bring that conversation into the classroom, so it can become a shared space of engagement for all. After digging into some of the areas of identity currently tackled by CMP, we discuss how students and educators have engaged with it, both by using the resources as well as creating their own media, and through their latest curricular project, the fully-online Critical Makers Lab.Here are some of the references from this episode, for those who want to dig a little deeper:Alison TropeDJ JohnsonCritical Media ProjectCritical Makers LabCMP DIY Activities:I am, but I'm not...Making ChangeMapping My World + CommunityIdentity CollageApplying the Common Core - Critical Media ProjectAlison & DJ's childhood TV favorites:Wonder Woman (TV Series 1975–1979) - IMDbCharlie's Angels (TV Series 1976–1981) - IMDbCHiPs (TV Series 1977–1983) - IMDbBattle of the Planets (TV Series 1978–1980) - IMDbVideos we watched and discussed, as they appear with discussion questions on the CMP site:Zootopia - Press Conference SceneChimamanda Ngozi Adichie: The danger of a single story | TED TalkRise (dinner table)I'm Trans, But I'm NotShips at a DistanceAlso mentioned:educator, author, and media literacy advocate Renee HobbsW.E.B Du Bois's 1890s infographics Share your thoughts via Twitter with Henry, Colin and the How Do You Like It So Far? account! After posting a career-high 12.5 sacks and earning a second successive nod to the Pro Bowl, Brian Burns is entering his prime as an outside linebacker for the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers have taken notice of Burns' production rewarding him with the fifth-year option of his first-round rookie contract, in which he'll make $16 million this season. Not only that, Carolina has foregone several opportunities to trade Burns for major draft compensation. So, it's time for Burns to get paid. What will a potential new deal for Burns look like? Is 2023 the year he becomes an All-Pro?While Burns is almost certain to produce double-digit sacks in 2023, there's a major question mark as to whether the Panthers can get enough production opposite of him at the other outside linebacker spot. The likely starter heading into training camp is sixth-year pro Marquis Haynes, who had a career-high 5.0 sacks in 2022. If given the starting nod and increased snaps, can Haynes fulfill produce at a high enough level? Or will it be a by-committee approach? There's a possibility that the Panthers will add a veteran at the other edge rusher spot. Bryson Karbley and Curtis Rauen break down the Panthers picks No. 39 - No. 145. What they liked, what they didn't. They also weigh in on Matt Corral's cryptic Instagram post that was soon deleted. Don't forget about new rookie numbers.
The Carolina Panthers filled their biggest need on Day 1 of the NFL Draft by selecting Bryce Young. Who would they target on Day 2 of the draft? Holding the 39th overall pick, Carolina had the opportunity to address WR, EDGE rusher, CB, and several other needy positions. The Panthers decided to give their new QB a weapon in Ole Miss WR Jonathan Mingo. Julian Council discusses what the Panthers prioritizing WR means for Young and the franchise moving forward. After bypassing an EDGE in the second round, the Panthers traded up to select DJ Johnson from Oregon. While lacking big-time college production, Johnson boasts physical tools similar to other prospects that Panthers GM Scott Fitterer has drafted in previous years.Plus, Julian looks at the Panthers two remaining picks and what needs and positions they could address in the fourth and fifth rounds on Day 3. Could Carolina trade to recoup picks in later years or to add to their draft class?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!BetterHelpThis episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Yesterday afternoon, the Carolina Panthers held their introductory press conference at Bank of America Stadium for the first overall pick, Bryce Young. Some of the topics he addressed were earning the locker room's respect immediately, his relationship with the second overall player drafted, CJ Stroud, and whether or not he'll wearing the No. 9 in Carolina. One quarterback already wearing the No. 9 is Matt Corral who didn't seem too pleased on Thursday night during the draft. Also, the Panthers selected an edge rusher from Oregon, DJ Johnson with the 80th pick last night after a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Paul Ihander, brand manager and program director of 99.9 The Fan, and University of Oregon graduate backs up the prosecutor when it comes to the pick.

My guest today is someone who is a friend to the JC pod, DeAntwann “DJ” Johnson. This episode is all about mutual respect. Casey and DJ start by talking about how the idea of respect has changed from the 1950's to today, and how kids & teens today are asking to & expecting to be respected. We teach respect by being respectful. They dig into whether or not kids need to earn their dignity, our respect, and our love (spoiler: they don't). DJ points out that the way we treat our children at home is the basis for what they expect from other adults outside of the home, and Casey explains how kids being disrespected in their home can show up as defiance & disconnection. DJ shares stepping stones you can use when young people are disrespectful, a bit about how teenage brain development plays in, and how to be a leader from a place of service for your teen. Casey finishes up by touching on the power of “and” - teaching & expecting kids to respect themselves AND the person in front of them. Takeaways from the show: Showing up respectfully and modeling respect for our teens The difference between respect and being nice Cultivating and teaching respect by being respectful, not by demanding it Kids deserve respect, dignity, & love - they don't need to earn it Disrespect in the home showing up as defiance and disconnect Softening, respecting, and loving your kids regardless of how they're showing up Leading from a place of service Teaching teens to respect themselves AND the person in front of them For full show notes including transcriptions, visit our website here. Oregon State with a come-from-behind win over Oregon. Was it a shove? A punch? A swing? Doesn't matter... DJ Johnson can't do that.
When we talk about breaking the cycle of trauma, there is no clearer example of this than in the life of DeAntwann “DJ” Johnson. DJ experienced a traumatic childhood that included child abuse, domestic abuse, homelessness, and emotional trauma. As a result of his family life, he entered the Indiana foster care system when he was about 10 years old. As DJ grew up in foster care and entered adulthood, he began to peel back the layers of his story to uncover cycles of trauma and embark on his own healing journey. In this episode, we talk about DJ's story, how he is working to break generational cycles of trauma, how to cultivate empathy for others, and so much more. I loved this conversation and I know you will too! Show Notes: https://theforgotteninitiative.org/s13e6/ Learn more about the TFI Advocate role: https://www.tfiadvocate.org/
Oregon Football escaped Washington State with a 44-41 victory on the back of a dramatic 4th quarter comeback--the likes of which Duck fans have not seen in a LONG time--and some stellar play from QB Bo Nix. His leadership and strong play helped propel the offense to 29 fourth quarter points that featured explosive plays, including the go-ahead 50-yd touchdown to sophomore WR Troy Franklin, who's coming into his own. He was far from the only standout on Saturday. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin reacts to Oregon's dramatic victory up in Pullman, a place that has proven to be a tougher place to play than some may think. Kris Hutson had his best game of the year, and there were a bevy of other Ducks who played critical roles in Saturday's thrilling victory--including DJ Johnson, who had 2 sacks and 2 tackles for loss. As a unit, no group was stronger than the offensive line--who has still not allowed a sack in 2022. In the midst of overwhelmingly emotional positives, Oregon had several negatives in this game beyond their 87 penalty yards--some of which came at absolutely critical junctures in the game that cast doubt on the Ducks' ability to emerge with a win. The red zone offense was abysmal, specifically in the first half when 3 trips resulted in six total points, and that's an area the Ducks can improve upon and fans should not jump to conclusions about that aspect of the offense. Oregon Football HC Dan Lanning has often talked about a growth mindset in good times and bad, and the Ducks should not be resting on their laurels despite a dominant, well-rounded performance against then-12th ranked BYU. The defense was stout against the run and if they can replicate that performance will give the Ducks a great chance to win this week against WSU. On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin starts to look at some of the most important factors going into the Ducks' Pac-12 opener in Pullman this week. When it comes to getting after Washington State QB Cam Ward, players like DJ Johnson, Brandon Dorlus, and Mase Funa will be players who need to step up and at least make him uncomfortable in the pocket. CB Trikweze Bridges had some tough moments last week against the Cougars, Spencer holds off (for now) on making a score prediction, but one listener asks about the most important components to the game for Oregon to come back home victorious on Saturday. Washington State had a HUGE win @ #19 Wisconsin in Week 2, and for Oregon to avoid the same fate as the Badgers they have to make the Cougars beat them and not beat themselves. Why do partners struggle with peaceful parenting? How can we help our male partners become open and receptive to this type of parenting? Why are there negative connotations associated with it to begin with? Joining me for this conversation is DeAntwann “DJ” Johnson. DJ is a husband, father, author, mentor, coach, counselor, and sports statistician. He grew up in the Indiana foster care system and yet despite that, has gone on to lead a successful, and fulfilling life. We go into: [3:05] Why DJ wanted to raise his son in a peaceful way [12:50] How to help dads with peaceful parenting [23:10] The fear behind buying into peaceful parenting [31:35] Why we can't expect kids to listen to us right away [38:10] Advice for parents whose partners are not on board [44:50] What DJ would say to his younger father self Before spending nine years in the foster care system, DJ suffered child abuse, domestic abuse, and emotional trauma. At one point, he wanted to end his life, but he realized that he was on this earth for a purpose. DJ fulfills that purpose by using his experiences to not only help establish relationships with the students he serves, but he helps parents better connect with their teenagers. DJ specializes in helping parents bridge the communication gap between them and their child to ensure that their child has room to be the best version of themself. The Oregon Ducks return home to Eugene for their 2022 home opener against the Eastern Washington Eagles. After suffering a brutal loss in Atlanta, this game is crucial for Oregon to establish their identity for this season. Bo Nix will need to take care of the ball to get the offense humming and firing on all cylinders. Noah Sewell, DJ Johnson and Justin Flowe will need to get after the quarterback to create some pressure and generate some turnovers. There's a lot the Ducks want to clean up from a week ago and Eastern Washington is going to give them a solid test and shouldn't be slept on. Max Torres is joined by KREM 2 News weekend sports anchor Andrew Quinn who covers the Eagles to give you an in-depth preview of what's in store for the Ducks on Saturday. The official Pac-12 pre-season all-conference teams have been released, and Oregon Football has 13 total players spread across the first/second teams and the honorable-mention list. The first-teamers include LB Noah Sewell, DL Brandon Dorlus, and returning OL Alex Forsythe and TJ Bass. Which players not named to one of these lists by the Pac-12 media might be on it by the time the season ends? On today's episode of Locked On Ducks, Spencer McLaughlin looks at who Oregon Football's top performers might be in 2022. Offensively, the potential breakout stars in his view stem from what Duck fans are hoping will be a philosophical adjustment on offense in the passing game. If Bo Nix and OC Kenny Dillingham can facilitate the ball more effectively to WRs and TEs in the passing game in 2022, names like Dont'e Thornton, Troy Franklin, and Terrance Ferguson could shine this year. Defensively, Oregon fans are rightfully anxious to see what Dan Lanning can do with players like Noah Sewell and Justin Flowe who have NFL-level talent. The linebacker position is the strongest core on The Ducks' defense this year, meaning players will need to step up in the secondary and at the EDGE position after losing Kayvon Thibodeaux to the NFL Draft. Could 5-star CB Dontae Manning finally look the part? Will Trikweze Bridges shine returning to playing safety? And what about DJ Johnson now being a full-time defensive player? Fall camp is now just TWO days away! On this episode, host Max Torres previews what's in store for the Oregon defense in 2022. The Ducks have a bunch of talent at every level of their defense, but there's varying levels of production and experience. Starting up front, expectations are high for the defensive line with returning veterans like Brandon Dorlus, Popo Aumavae and Keyon Ware-Hudson. They're joined by newcomer and Washington transfer Sam 'Taki' Taimani. Moving back to the linebackers, Noah Sewell and Justin Flowe headline what is one of the most talented linebacker corps in the entire country. Behind them you have some very promising young talent in Jeffrey Bassa, Jackson LaDuke and Keith Brown. Oregon also added speedsters Harrison Taggart and Devon Jackson, who could see the field sooner than later with their crazy speed. DJ Johnson and Bradyn Swinson look like they could be the answer for pass rusher as the defense looks to fill the void created by Kayvon Thibodeaux's departure. In the secondary Bennett Williams boasts the most experience at safety, while the Ducks hope of breakouts by Trikweze Bridges, Jamal Hill and Steve Stephens IV among others. Cornerback is the youngest position group and looks like it will be led by Colorado transfer Christian Gonzalez while they hope for some younger and newer faces to step up like Dontae Manning and Jahlil Florence.
