Pulisic and Musah out of Gold Cup for USMNT? - Morning Espresso, 5.22

Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso, presented by our friends at Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse. Reports yesterday from FOX and the Athletic indicate that Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah might not participate in the Concacaf Gold Cup this summer for the USMNT. Both are coming off long European seasons with Milan, but it's a huge blow for Mauricio Pochettino and the national team. This summer is the last opportunity to have an extended window to work with players ahead of next summer's World Cup. With Gio Reyna, Weston McKennie, and Tim Weah already missing due to the Club World Cup, Pochettino's job gets that much more difficult to look ahead to 2026. It does create some opportunities for players to impress and play their way into deeper consideration for key roles in the World Cup though. Perhaps Diego Luna SZN is upon us?Tottenham Hotspur won an uninspiring Europa League final 1-0 over Manchester United. I think my prediction of it having the feel of a relegation playoff came true, Spurs were defensive and very un-Ange like in the win but it got the job done. They are in the Champions League next year while Manchester United does have the feel of a relegated club at the moment. 16th in the Premier League, out of Europe in 2025-26, losing out on somewhere between $100-150M because of that, and while they say they don't have to sell players to add in the summer window, that doesn't really seem possible for a club that has lost more than double the allowed amount in the Premier League's Profit & Sustainability Rules. I'm not sure if Manchester United can be what we've known them to be any time soon due to their financial situation. 4 comebacks highlighted Lamar Hunt US Open Cup play last night as Minnesota, Nashville, Philadelphia, and Austin advanced while DC United and Red Bulls needed penalty shootouts to join them. The inauguaral Concacaf W Champions Cup final will see Tigres host Gotham on Saturday. The hosts won 2-0 over Portland in their semifinal last night while Gotham won 3-1 over Club America. In Club World Cup updates:Endrick will miss the tournament for Real Madrid due to a hamstring injuryJesus Vallejo will not see his contract extended with Madrid for the tournament, he's out of contract this summer. Johnny Cardoso is Atleti's top target as a defensive midfielder, although it's unclear if they could get it done ahead of the tournament. Spurs have a priority transfer option on the USMNT midfielder. Dome Torrent, former Pep Guardiola assistant and last at Atletico San Luis in Liga MX, is the new manager of Monterrey ahead of the tournament. Boca Juniors have settled on Gustavo Quinteros as their top candidate to become their new manager, but Sevilla are also interested in the current Velez coach. Wydad are looking for a new manager as they have parted "mutually" with Rhulani Mokwena. They finished third in the Moroccan league this season, missing out on the Champions League, and they are facing a transfer ban amidst reports of Mokwena working for several months without being paid. Miguel Cardoso is leading Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa into the Champions League final this weekend with Egypt's Pyramids FC. It will be over two legs. Then he will turn his attention towards the Club World Cup where he wants to "showcase our full potential." New ticket options available for the matches in Atlanta, check out FIFA.com/tickets.More Morning Espresso to be served up tomorrow morning.

Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.Carlo Ancelotti will be taking over the Brazilian national team, the first time they have had a permanent foreign manager ever. He has a lot of work to do as Brazil is in a qualification spot for the 2026 World Cup, but it is not guaranteed. There are lots of questions about the squad at the moment, but defense is a glaring issue. Tite's teams gave up 30 goals from 2016-2022, the team has given up 31 goals since the start of 2023. One thing going for Brazil, the only time they won the World Cup as the favorite was in Chile in 1962. Even at that one, they had to overcome an injury to Pele that knocked him out of the tournament. Right now, they won't be a favorite in 2026.As the seasons wind down in Europe, silly season ramps up. It's even sillier because of the Club World Cup this summer as teams jockey to get spots filled ahead of the tournament while others look ahead to next season. Kevin De Bruyne is not a sure thing for the Chicago Fire at this point as Napoli want to bring him in. Jonathan Tah is expected to leave Bayer Leverkusen on a free transfer and join Bayern Munich. One of the players he is expected to replace is Eric Dier, who will leave on a free for Monaco in France, but maybe not until after the end of the Club World Cup as Bayern could do a short term contract with Dier for the tournament. His contract with Bayern ends on June 30, around the end of the group stage. On the manager front, Cesc Fabregas is going to stay at Como in Italy rather than replace Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen according to Italian reports. Erik Ten Hag has also been linked with the Leverkusen job. Davide Ancelotti is reportedly going to Glasgow to join Rangers as their new manager, following helping his father with the first two Brazil World Cup qualifiers in June. Two clubs in the Club World Cup also need new managers and both have been linked to the Argentine Gabriel Milito. Boca Juniors is likely the front runner to get him as he is in Buenos Aires currently. They are still in the Argentine playoffs and will host Independiente next in the quarterfinals. Monterrey also are linked with Milito, but TUDN has four other names in their sights. Matías Almeyda and Dome Torrent, both with MLS experience, are in the mix along with Argentines Hernán Crespo and Eduardo Domínguez (currently with Estudiantes). John Textor wants to convince Thiago Almada of returning to Botafogo for the Club World Cup but with Almada not having a break since the 2023-2024 MLS offseason, he is reluctant to do it. Technically, he's still a Botafogo player on loan to Lyon so things could get interesting. Textor owns both clubs and has some looming financial decisions to make surrounding all of his clubs. Pachuca won their first ever Liga MX Femenil title last night, 3-2 on aggregate over Club America. Their 3-0 lead from the first leg held up, even after losing 2-0 in the second leg. They will be part of the 2025 Concacaf W Champions Cup later this year. Full schedule in MLS tomorrow night. Atlanta United's match in Austin has been delayed by 30 minutes as the high temperature tomorrow is set to be 105. Stay tuned for any further changes. We'll be on the ground in Austin later today and be on the lookout for updates from the SDH Network and from our soccer coverage on 92.9 The Game. Atlanta Soccer Tonight will air tonight at 11pm.No Espresso in its normal form on Wednesday or Thursday due to travel, but stay tuned for other updates (follow @SoccerDownHere on social media platforms, subscribe on our YouTube channel) between now and the Friday edition.

The New York City Football Club won the Eastern Conference regular season championship for the first time in the five-year history of the club.  As the top seed, NYCFC earned a playoff bye in the opening round but were foiled in the conference semifinals by Toronto FC. The coach who guided City to the franchise's best season may now be on his way out. In his post-game press conference, Dome Torrent intimated that the Toronto match could very well have been his final match with the club. When he was asked if he had a desire to return for the 2020 season, Torrent was not vague with his response. “It’s not important. They are ready for another coach."  Pro Soccer USA's Glenn Crooks is the radio voice of New York City FC and has followed the club both home, away and at their weekly training sessions. He will share Torrent's comments and welcome in the TV commentator for the team on the YES Network, Joe Tolleson. Torrent told Tolleson after the loss to Toronto FC, "That is soccer. Diego Maradona was an iconic, enigmatic and tragic figure all of which is captured in the documentary, "Diego Maradona." Academy Award winning director Asif Kapadia tells Pro Soccer USA's Glenn Crooks that he discovered 500 hours of archived footage which provides the essence of the man best known for his slalom through England in the quarterfinals of the 1986 World Cup and the "Hand of God" goal in the same match. “I can tell you that having done so much research on Diego Maradona I’ve seen him do it three or four times," Kapadia said. Half the time he gets away with it, half the time he gets caught.” Kapadia explains that his film spends considerable time on the incredible seven years Maradona played for Napoli. “The most expensive player in the world goes to one of the poorest cities in Europe and takes a team that’s never won anything before, was about to be relegated and within three years wins a championship. That is the less well known part of his story.” Also in this episode, the post match thoughts of coach Dome Torrent, goalkeeper Sean Johnson and defender Sebastian Ibeagha after New York City FC clinched their first Eastern Conference Championship. The most important result in Dome Torrent’s brief tenure as head coach of the New York City Football Club came on April 24 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. It was week eight of Major League Soccer and the boys in blue had yet to record a victory and Torrent’s job security was in question. City won that match in convincing style, 2-0 – part of what is currently an 11-game unbeaten streak in all competitions. Audi Field will be the venue for New York City’s Round of 16 match in the 106-year old U.S. Open Cup – the Pigeons recording their first win in the competition last week against North Carolina FC. Because of injuries and international call-ups, Anton Tinnerholm, normally an outside back, played at center back for the first time since he was 15 years old in that match. Torrent and Tinnerholm spoke to Pro Soccer USA’s Glenn Crooks about the run in the U.S. Open Cup and the earlier success against D.C. United. “There were a couple of times he (center back Sebastian Ibeagha) had to scream at me – I really wanted to go forward. That was the biggest challenge for me.” – Anton Tinnerholm on his adjustment from wing back to center back. “When I want to change the system or move some players, normally I will speak to the players when I have any doubt. With James Sands likely out for the match against the Montreal Impact on Saturday, the boys ponder whether coach Dome Torrent and New York City FC will remain in a three-back system -- which has helped them to their first two wins of the season and a five-match unbeaten streak -- or will he change to a four-back shape. A lot of discussion here about the possible system and the players who fit in best. Also, the guys discuss the emergence of Héber, the striker who has greatly assisted the attack. They also take a look around the rest of the league, especially the Eastern Conference, where very few points separate the teams in playoff position.
