Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! This is your one-stop shop for all things sports law. In this episode, Stephanie Weissenburger (@SWeissenburger_) and Emily Costanzo (@EmilyCostanzo_) discuss the latest in the world of sports and law. The investigation into USMNT Head Coach Greg Berhalter revealed some interesting facts regarding the relationship between the coach and Claudio Reyna. (3:40) US Soccer released their report on the coach including all of Berhalter's statements regarding Claudio and some of the reasons that Gio Reyna was benched during the most recent World Cup. Berhalter is still in the running to retain the Men's Head Coaching position but with all of the drama surrounding his relationship with the players, it is not a certainty that he keeps the position. Michale Irvin has filed a defamation lawsuit against Marriott Hotels following an incident that led to his dismissal from the NFL Network's coverage of the Super Bowl. (12:17) Irvins case is based on allegations made against him by an employee of the hotel during his stay. In the course of the lawsuit, a video was released that showed the interaction between Irvin and the employee which seems to contradict the allegations of the hotel. The case is ongoing with Irvin asking for damages up to $100 million which is not out of possibility given the value he brings to the NFL Network and the potential damage to his reputation if his suit is successful. LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne has added yet another NIL deal to her portfolio but this one could cause some controversy. (22:35) Dunne recently partnered with Caktus AI which touts itself as the first-ever educational AI tool. The AI can write essays or solve questions that are placed into the program. Given the way the product is geared toward students, LSU released a statement stating that the use of such AI could be against the academic code of the university. This NIL deal seems to highlight the wild west nature of the NIL landscape and how institutions have to act on their feet when problems such as this one arise. Stories have emerged that Shaquille O'Neal might be evading the serving of process in connection with the FTX lawsuit. (35:18) While the stories seem to imply that he has been hiding in his house to avoid this, recently Shaq attended his 51st birthday out in public. The FTX lawsuit has roped in many prominent athletes including Tom Brady and Steph Curry. The lawsuit claims that individuals relied on celebrities when it came to investing in cryptocurrency. They claim the losses from the drop in cryptocurrency value were a result of their reliance on the endorsements of the athletes. *** Have a topic you want to write about? Former World Cup winner Heather O'Reilly and former professional player Pat Nevin join Mani Djazmi to discuss FIFA - football's world governing body decision to have a 48 team men's World Cup which will have 104 matches and spread across six weeks. Guinea is a country that has never qualified for the World Cup and Mani speaks to their goalkeeper Aly Keita who is in favour of expanding the competition. The team also discuss the ongoing disagreement between United States coach Greg Berhalter and former teammate Claudio Reyna. Berhalter was cleared by an legal investigation into an incident of domestic violence 30 years ago. The incident from 1992 was brought to light by former USA players Claudio and Danielle Reyna who are parents of one of the USA's current players, Geo. They've been friends with the Berhalters for decades but were unhappy about the lack of playing time. The report also revealed new facts about Claudio Reyna whom, it says, was uncooperative and a pushy parent. Plus have a panel accidentally started a riot? That's after a title-deciding match between Al-Ahed and Al-Ansar couldn't finish after a goal scored in injury-time by Ahed's Scottish striker Lee Erwin sparked a riot by Ansar fans who set seats on fire and threw them onto the pitch forcing the refereeing officials to run for cover. We'll also hear a special guest!

Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! This is your one-stop shop for all things sports law. In this episode, Dan Lust (@SportsLawLust), Justin Mader (@MaderLaw), and Evan Mattel (@Evan_Mattel21) break down the latest in the world of sports and law. Greg Termolle (@GregTerm) joins the podcast to discuss the latest US Men's soccer drama. Ja Morant, a star guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, has been in the news recently for multiple events pointing to behavior concerns. (3:57) Morant recently stepped away from the team following a two-game suspension after Ja flashed a gun on Instagram live. Other stories accuse Morant of punching a 17-year-old following a pick-up basketball game. These stories have caused Morant's deal with Powerade to be pulled for now as he goes through a counseling program. The Baltimore Ravens placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on Lamar Jackson this past week. (17:56) Jackson was seeking a large fully guaranteed contract that he was negotiating himself without the help of an agent. If a team is interested and puts together a contract for Jackson, then the Ravens have a chance to match it. The NFLPA recently released an email to its member stating that the Bengals' organization is attempting to strip its players of workers' compensation. (32:20) The email highlighted lobbying efforts the Bengals are engaged in to change the workers' compensation law in Ohio. The NFL's collective bargaining agreement (CBA) only requires teams to provide workers' compensation based on the law in which the team is based. Rumors have swirled recently that the WWE is putting a plan together to allow betting on their events. (38:24) This is surprising considering WWE matches are scripted and have a predetermined outcome. The WWE would plan to keep those results under lock and key even restricting the wrestlers' access to the script. Many problems have been pointed out but other predetermined events, such as the Oscars, receive plenty of legal bets. The U.S. Soccer Federation completed and released its report covering alleged domestic violence by Greg Berhalter as well as behavior issues with Claudio Reyna. (53:26) Berhalter and Reyna have known each other since they were around 11 or 12 years old. While the report did not point to any direct FIFA violations, it does include things that could cause FIFA to conduct its own investigation into their relationship and the actions of Claudio Reyna. *** Have a topic you want to write about? There are many reasons parents shouldn't be overprotective. The psychological effects of overprotective parents can be significant. The most notable one is that it hurts their children's growth and development into well-adjusted, independent adults. Here are the different ways this harm manifests. PORTLAND, Ore. — Crystal Dunn was often the only Black girl on her youth soccer clubs, and even when she finally made it to the national team, she did her own hair and makeup for photo shoots because "there wasn't someone set up for me." While the U.S. national team has steadily become more representative, Dunn says there's still work to be done. That starts with making sure young women of color feel included all the way down to the youth level. "I had very supportive parents who explained to me that, 'This is OK, you are still welcome in this sport. And just because there aren't many people that look like you, this is still your game,'" Dunn said. That support was key to her success "because honestly at the end of the day, it's pretty lonely to feel like you're the only one in this space and to not feel as if you belong." From the inquire.org : U.S. Soccer dismisses USMNT general manager Brian McBride McBride and sporting director Earnie Stewart received complaints from Claudio Reyna, their former U.S. teammate, over the lack of playing time for Claudio's son Gio at the recent World Cup. Brian McBride is out as U.S. men's soccer team general manager, multiple outlets reported Friday night, in the wake of the World Cup and this month's Reyna-Berhalter scandal. McBride and sporting director Earnie Stewart received complaints from Claudio Reyna, their former U.S. teammate, over the lack of playing time for Claudio's son, Gio, in Qatar. It's not yet known how McBride responded to them. Nor is it specifically clear whether Claudio sent McBride the threat to reveal manager Gregg Berhalter's 31-year-old domestic violence incident that Claudio's wife, Danielle Reyna, sent to Stewart. Danielle sent the threat, and later publicly admitted to doing so, without the consent of the victim, her former college roommate and Gregg's then-girlfriend — now-wife of 25-plus years — Rosalind. What Happens when you overprotect your children: -Worry is a recurrent, dysfunctional and rigid form of negative thinking that is often a primary sign of generalized anxiety disorder. -Parental overprotection can undermine a child's development of independent coping skills. -Overprotectiveness conveys to the child a sense that the world is dangerous. It reinforces avoidance and keeps children from engaging in social situations restricting the opportunities to build friendships and learn social skills. -Overprotective parents go out of their way to make sure their children don't fail. They rescue their children quickly and provide them with unnecessary assistance, often without being asked. -Higher occurrence of anxiety and depression, overprotected children also have lower self-esteem and confidence in their ability to solve everyday problems. -Overprotective parenting is associated with high degrees of bullying experienced by the child --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coachcameron/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/coachcameron/support
A former Virginia Tech soccer player has reached a $100,000 settlement with the school to dismiss her lawsuit claiming she lost her starting spot on the Hokies team over her refusal to kneel with teammates in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Kiersten Hening, a former non-scholarship player for the Hokies, filed a federal lawsuit against Virginia Tech coach Chugger Adair in 2021, saying he targeted her because he 'dislikes Hening's political views.' Hening has now agreed to drop that lawsuit in exchange for $100,000. However, the settlement does not require Virginia Tech to admit to any wrongdoing, her attorney, Cameron Norris, told The Roanoke Times. Former youth soccer coach accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting child heads to trial LENAWEE COUNTY, MI – A former youth soccer coach who coached in Adrian before moving to Texas is heading to trial on more than a dozen criminal sexual misconduct charges. During the investigation, authorities discovered dozens of images of the naked victim, as well as other evidence that Olnhausen was having an inappropriate sexual relationship with the victim, Nessel said. Eric Wynalda claims Gregg Berhalter had a VENDETTA against Gio Reyna for the USA's World Cup campaign as he says family feud lasted 'eight or nine months' before bombshell 'blackmail' row - after Claudio Reyna didn't keep Berhalter's son at Austin. Arrests Made After Parents From Belgrade Attacked At Youth Soccer Tournament In Sarajevo The organizer of the tournament for children from the ages of 7 to 14 told RFE/RL's Balkan Service that play would continue despite the incident. Former Japan women's volleyball player Naomi Masuko spearheaded the first such tournament in the hope of creating a better sporting environment for youths who may otherwise have borne the brunt of abusive coaching. Fifth division soccer team Hapoel Zafririm Holon embarrassed its opponent Maccabi Pardes Katz with a record 31-0 victory on Thursday. Welcome back to THE Sports Law Podcast! We keep you up to date on everything at the intersection of sports and the law! Dan Lust is joined by Mike and Tarun as well as guest Andrew Bua, who is an attorney with Wasserman. Vince McMahon is back and issues immediately arise. (4:47) McMahon had initially stepped down as CEO last summer amidst allegations of misconduct and his daughter Stephanie McMahon and her husband WWE start Triple-H have taken over. Recently, Vince has returned and is now being accused of voter misuse and stacking the board in his favor. Vince was also accused of timing his return with the WWE media rights negotiations. WWE shareholders have filed a class-action lawsuit claiming breach of fiduciary duty against Vince. Jake Paul signs major deal with the Professional Fighters League. (33:44) The PFL is an MMA league that has been gaining popularity for their season-style fighting schedule. Jake Paul, and business partner Nakisa Bidarian (former CFO of the UFC), are equity shareholders in the PFL and created the Super Fight division. This new division is to encourage fighters with an already big draw to compete in this division and the fighters receive 50% of the pay-per-view (PPV). Fighter pay has been a long-standing issue with the UFC and Dana White. Many UFC fighters have called out Dana for better shares of PPV and Jake Paul has also criticized White. USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter no longer had a contract with the team following report of domestic violence. (45:23) A report was provided to USSF officials that Berhalter had kicked his now-wife over 30 years ago in a bar. This allegation was confirmed by Berhalter and his wife, in that it was back in 1991 when they were dating. Berhalter released a statement apologized for his actions and his wife stated that she has forgiven her husband. The interesting part of this story is the person who told the USSF was Danielle Renya, who is the mother of Giovanni Reyna and the wife of soccer legend Claudio Reyna. The Reynas and Berhalters have known each other since college and apparently the Reynas were not happy with the amount of playing time that their son received during the world cup. There were apparent behavior issues with Gio during the world cup that Berhalter had addressed the media about, another thing the Reynas were most likely unhappy about. Moving forward we will see if a tortious interference lawsuit arises. Dan and Conlan are back with the betting segment sponsored by Bettor Edge. Hope's joined by US Soccer Hall of Famer and SiriusXM FC's Eric Wynalda to dig into all the drama surrounding Greg Berhalter, the Reyna family and United States Soccer as a whole. They cover the allegations towards Berhalter and both Claudio and Danielle Reyna, and why everyone involved comes out looking bad. Hope and Eric hold nothing back.

The family feud between the Berhalters and the Reynas is unlike anything we've seen in sports. It feels more comparable to Shakespeare, or Game of Thrones, or even Star Wars. But it became all so real when Claudio Reyna, childhood friend of USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter, and father of rising star Gio Reyna, along with his wife Danielle, exposed a 1991 domestic violence incident between Berhalter and his now-wife Rosalind…seemingly in response to Gio being benched at the World Cup. It's a tragic dispute between two of US soccer's most famous families. Kyle Bonagura, who has been covering this as it unfolded, tells us what exactly caused this massive rift between former friends. Colts safety Rodney Thomas made the two-hour drive from Indianapolis to Cincinnati to provide his sedated friend words of encouragement. Vikings defensive tackle and former Bills teammate Harrison Phillips arranged to have dinner delivered to the hospital. Hamlin’s marketing representative Jordan Rooney told The Associated Press the player’s recovery is moving in “a positive direction.” The Bills say Hamlin is still in critical condition but has shown signs of improvement. NFL – Hamlin’s collapse spurs new wave of vaccine misinformation Misinformation about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines has flared up once again, this time following the on-field collapse of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin during a game Monday. Even before Hamlin was carried off the field, social media posts claimed without evidence that his medical emergency was caused by a COVID-19 inoculation. Prominent anti-vaccine groups and right-leaning figures like Tucker Carlson claimed Hamlin’s cardiac arrest is connected to a number of athletes who have died after receiving the shot. Physicians interviewed by the AP, however, said it’s wrong to blame vaccines for Hamlin’s injury and that there’s been no increase in cardiac arrests among vaccinated athletes. NFL – NFL still considering scheduling options, Week 18 unchanged The NFL is still considering various options following the suspension of the Bills-Bengals game, including possibly eliminating the bye week before the Super Bowl. The Bills-Patriots game set for Sunday and the rest of the Week 18 games remain on schedule. Fields finishes his second season with 1,143 yards rushing, 63 shy of the record of 1,206 set by Baltimore's Lamar Jackson in 2019 during his MVP season. Eberflus said Fields reported a sore hip Monday morning, a day after the Bears got blown out at Detroit. An MRI confirmed the strain and the team's medical staff ruled him out for the game against NFC North champion Minnesota on Sunday. MLB – Benintendi just planning to be himself as he joins White Sox Andrew Benintendi pulled on his new No. 23 Chicago White Sox jersey a day after finalizing a $75 million, five-year deal. The White Sox had long been interested in Benintendi, going back to when the outfielder was selected by Boston with the No. 7 pick in the 2015 amateur draft — one spot ahead of Chicago. Benintendi says it’s good to be with a team that wanted him from the get-go. MLB – AP source: Cubs, 1B Hosmer agree to 1-year contract Eric Hosmer has agreed to a $720,000, one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs, giving the team another option at first base and designated hitter.
