Former stalwart Ian Brightwell is the latest guest on the Official Man City podcast... Brightwell came through the ranks at City - being part of our first ever FA Youth Cup winning side in 1986. A true team player, he went on to make 380 appearances for City between 1986 and 1998 during a rollercoaster period for the Club. Brightwell was also joined in the City squad for several years by his brother, David! In this episode, Ian speaks to hosts George Kelsey and Paul Dickov - having played alongside Dickov in his final two campaigns at Maine Road. The conversation starts with his childhood and family life as son of two Olympians; Robbie Brightwell, captain of the British Olympic team in 1964, and Ann Packer, gold medal winner in the 800m in Tokyo that year. They move on to his stories of a fascinating period in our history, when Brightwell was a regular in a City side that experienced highs and lows in a rollercoaster 12 years between 1986 and 1998. There's also discussion of perhaps his most famous moment in a City shirt, a sweet left-footed strike against Manchester United at Old Trafford! Learn more about your ad choices. Contains Distressing ContentScott Joined the Police in 1995. He had been a professional footballer, and his selection process was extremely smooth! He had played for Alloa Athletic and Scotland under 16 and played against Saudi Arabia in the Youth World Cup Final alongside Paul Dickov .Prior to joining the police Scott worked in the travel industry. His first day at training school wasn't the best start. He had been told to wear casual clothing. However, the drill sergeant had other ideas and a public telling off and was one of a handful who had to put their uniform on in the car park! He has fond memories of his time in training school and it was a platform that served him well throughout his career. His conclusion of training he went to his force for local procedure. On his first day, as he sat in the canteen, he was informed that there had been a shooting at Dunblane primary school. Along with his young colleagues he was dispatched to the school and was placed on scene preservation and to prevent the press and parents from entering the area. He saw the aftermath of the shooting and he describes his experiences as unforgettable. His first week became even more memorable when he broke the wrist of a suspect who he had handcuffed.Scott served at the Court in Holland where the Lockerbie Suspects were tried. This experience was carried out in the spotlight of the worlds press. The camp was in lockdown at night and the staff worked hard and played hard. Scott discovered a liking for firearms and undertook the tough process to qualify. His skills were recognised and he became the Chief Firearms instructor. The success in the work place came at a cost. The impact on his family was such that it put an end to his marriage. His depression was overwhelming but the death by suicide of a friend had a significant impact, and he found that with the support of the PFOA he was able to make the changes he needed to put his life back on track. The motivation to retire from Police Scotland was as a result of the pension changes. He wanted to stay but it became cost prohibitive.Since retirement Scott has been working for a number of different organisations and concentrates on wellbeing and has supported organisations such as PFOA Hosted on Acast. City 5-1 Watford. Another step towards the Premier League title successful negotiated. It was a special day for Gabriel Jesus, as he bagged his first ever Premier League hat-trick. In fact, he scored four and assisted Rodri's goal, too. There was little doubt who the man of the match was. It leaves City in control of the Premier League title race with five matches left to play. This win moved us four points ahead of Liverpool, although they have a game in hand against Everton on Sunday. The equation is simple: win all five and we will be champions for the fourth time in five seasons. City are now the first team in Premier League history to win 15 consecutive matches against the same opponent. And Gabriel Jesus has become the first player to score four goals in a single Premier League game since Tottenham's Son Heung-min vs Southampton in September 2020. In this episode, we look back at our 2-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moor. Liverpool's victory over Watford in the early kick off saw City go into the game second – and unusual position for us. The last time we ended a day off top spot was December 3, so the pressure was on. But City were excellent. Our possession game and the quality and speed of our passing was exceptional and Burnley really struggled to contain us. Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan got the goals – both of which were beautifully worked – with Raheem Sterling assisting each of them. Couple of interesting stats to sweep up. Gundogan is now the top scoring German in Premier League history. No player has ever taken more points from their first 100 Premier League appearances than Aymeric Laporte. And Raheem Sterling has now scored or assisted 200 City goals. No one has contributed direct goal involvements for the club since his arrival in 2015. Manchester City Interviews

Some goals will never be forgotten. Manchester City's equaliser at Wembley in the Division Two play-off final in 1999 is one that goes down as perhaps the most important in the club's history, as Paul Dickov's strike in the 95th minute saw the Blues claw back from 2-0 down to draw. Forever a cult hero at City, the feisty Scot had two spells with the club - rejoining in 2006, as a much-changed City battled for Premier League survival. The Blue Moon Podcast's David Mooney spoke to him over two interviews - the first in 2010, and the second in 2014. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. City's winning run in the Premier League has come to an end after a 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday. It means we are now 12 points clear at the top of the table – but Liverpool have two games in hand to reduce the deficit. Kyle Walker-Peters gave Saints the lead, but Aymeric Laporte's header ensured we left with a point. It was a landmark day, with Pep Guardiola becoming the quickest manager to reach 500 Premier League points. He has reached the milestone in just 213 games. For context, the previous quickest to 500 was Jose Mourinho, who managed the feat in 231 games. It's an incredible statistic that further underlines his brilliance as a manager and City's consistency under his guidance. After the game we heard from Pep and goal scorer Aymeric Laporte – and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Paul Dickov and Nedum Onuoha. But, just as Sergio Aguero's effort wouldn't have been possible without Edin Dzeko's header, Paul Dickov's strike would never have happened were it not for Kevin Horlock's 90th minute goal in the Division Two play-off final. 11 Premier League wins in a row and 11 points clear at the top of the table! Our last-gasp 2-1 win over Arsenal on new Year's Day felt hugely significant. With a number of players missing and a short turnaround between our game away at Brentford and this one at the Emirates, it was always going to be a big ask – but champions find a way to win. In many ways, this was more satisfying than some of our more comfortable victories in recent weeks. It was Rodri who got the crucial winner deep into injury time – a goal he'll never forget. Another fine victory for City. Our 4-0 win away at Newcastle on Sunday means our lead at the top of the Premier League has been extended to three points, after second-placed Liverpool drew 2-2 at Tottenham. It was another fine performance for City, who looked thoroughly comfortable throughout. Once again, the goals were spread around, with Dias, Cancelo, Mahrez and Sterling all getting on the scoresheet. The victory also saw City set two significant English football records. We have registered the most top-flight wins in a calendar year. This was our 34th of 2021, which eclipses the previous record of 33 which Liverpool managed under the great Bob Paisley back in 1982. We now have two more Premier League games – at home to Leicester and away to Brentford – to extend our record further. And it was our 18th away win in the league this year, more than any other top-flight side has managed in the history of English football. Indeed, our 18 wins means we surpass the previous record of 17 set by Bill Nicholson's doubling-winning Tottenham side of 1960-61, widely recognised as one of the finest this country has ever seen. Pep and his team continue to move the dial. After the game, we heard from Pep and Riyad Mahrez, and joining us in the Matchday Live studio were Joleon Lescott and Paul Dickov. Another blistering performance from Manchester City. Fresh from our 5-1 win away at Club Brugge on Tuesday, City put another fine display to dismantle Brighton on Saturday 10 years to the day since our famous 6-1 win at Old Trafford. City ran out 4-1 winners at the AMEX thanks to goals from Ilkay Gundogan, Phil Foden, who scored twice, and Riyad Mahrez. Bernardo Silva was, again, absolutely magnificent – he ran further than anyone and was so dangerous with his movement, touch and passing – and Phil Foden, as I've said a few times on this podcast, is now entering the very top tier of players in world football. He is bona fide world class, he's a lifelong City fan and he's been at the club since he was at U9 level. It's the perfect story. It was also a day for refection. City fan Guido De Pauw, a member of the Blue Moon Belgium Supporters' Club, was attacked in Belgium on Tuesday after our win in Brugge. He has been in a coma ever since but is now in a stable condition. The players wore t-shirts to show our support and the travelling fans held aloft a banner. The whole club is rooting for you, Guido, our thoughts very much with you and your family. Tuesday's Champions League Group A game in Paris didn't go to plan, with City suffering a 2-0 defeat to PSG. City created plenty and should have scored at least a couple of goals. The City players will be disappointed with the result, but there was plenty in our all-round performance to be pleased about. Here's another chance to hear my interview with Paul Dickov from season three.Paul's dad was delighted to pack his teenage son off to Arsenal to stop him getting into bother. Paul loved Gunners boss George Graham and flourished as a youth striker, but the wealth of talent at the club was stifling so he went to troubled Manchester City, who promptly sacked manager Alan Ball.Joe Royle had success despite inheriting 56 pros after a period of mismanagement, and Paul's famous equaliser in the 95th minute of a playoff final against Gillingham set up a return to the Championship. There's great stuff about that City era, including cult heroes Georgi Kinkladze and George Weah. Paul still adores Man City and its supporters and he is delighted to witness their recent successes. It is, he considers, a club that has kept its soul.Enjoy a genuine classic.Graham See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

It's time for round two with Paul Dickov in the Big Interview. Finally, Manchester City fans, finally, you're going to hear about Maine Road, the playoff final, Oasis and what Paul finds most thrilling of this version of City.If you're not a Man City supporter, I think you'll be interested in a glimpse of a point in that club's history – not so long ago – when they were seconds away from another season in the third tier. If a certain Scottish striker doesn't score, Gwyneth Paltrow never meets John Hannah and perhaps Pep Guardiola never finds Phil Foden, either. Before you hear them, I also want to tell you what Paul is up to now. He's mentoring children in the schools run by the Laurus Trust, in the Manchester area. The Laurus Trust targets sporting as well as academic excellence and Paul talks to children and teachers, in groups and one-on-one, about managing sporting development, diet and nutrition and laying pathways that give the kids at these free schools the best possible chance of being all they can be. Here's part one of a two-part interview with Paul Dickov, a striker probably best known for his time at Manchester City. But today you're going to hear him talk about starting off at Arsenal and this is the part of his career I was most interested in.Paul will tell you the list of teams who wanted him as he approached his 16th birthday, and why his dad urged him to leave the family home in Livingston, Scotland and go to London. Then it's George Graham, Pat Rice, Tony Adams, Ian Wright. You're going to love these stories. Before you hear them, I also want to tell you what Paul is up to now. The last day of the season NEVER disappoints. We should know that by now. The boys are back to dissect a final afternoon packed full of late goals, drama and tension. Just a year after they were promoted from League One thanks to an injury-time goal, Doncaster Rovers have been relegated back to the third tier by an injury time goal. It was scored by Paul Caddis for Birmingham City at the Reebok Stadium, which earned the Blues a 2-2 draw at Bolton and kept them in the Championship at Donny's expense on goal difference. We speak to Liam Hoden, sports reporter at the Doncaster Free Press and South Yorkshire Times, about what relegation means for Rovers and their boss Paul Dickov.
