This assault took place on a Thanksgiving. A former Chesterfield County Virginia Police Officer tells the story of the incident and their actions. It is also promoted across their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other platforms. Kyle "Ashley" Woods is our guest and he tells the tale. He talks about the tactical response and the reasons why they did what they did. Kyle also discussed the trauma response he experience, both during and after the incident. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast episode is available for free on their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify and most major podcast platforms. “You train for it, you think you're ready for it… but when it actually happens, nothing prepares you for the real thing.” These are the words of former Chesterfield County Police Officer Kyle “Ashley” Woods as he recounted a Thanksgiving that turned into a violent and traumatic ordeal, not only for the victims but also for the police officers who responded to the call. In a gripping episode of the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast, Woods shares the harrowing details of a domestic violence call that escalated into an active shooter situation in Chesterfield County, Virginia. What started as a typical domestic dispute report quickly spiraled into chaos, leaving three people shot and officers dodging bullets at the scene. The Thanksgiving Shooting and the Police Trauma response. Look for supporting stories about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin . A Holiday Marred by Violence The incident unfolded on a Thanksgiving, a time typically reserved for family and gratitude. But for Woods and his fellow officers, it became a life-threatening crisis. “A call came in, domestic in nature, nothing out of the ordinary on the surface,” Woods explained. “But the second we arrived, everything went sideways. Shots were already fired, people were already down. And then he turned on us.” Available for free on their website and streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other podcast platforms. Woods described the tactical response that followed, the quick decisions, the coordination, and the sheer intensity of responding under fire. He explained that while training prepares officers for high-pressure situations, the reality of being fired upon brings a level of psychological stress that lingers long after the gunfire ends. The Lingering Trauma Woods was candid about the aftermath, not just the physical toll but the emotional scars. “That day stuck with me,” he said. “Even after the reports were done, after the scene was cleared… the trauma didn't stop.” The Thanksgiving Shooting and the Police Trauma response. As a result of his experiences, Woods developed a deeper understanding of how critical incidents affect not just victims and families, but first responders themselves. It's a perspective he brings to his podcast, Critical Incidents, where he now invites others to share their stories of trauma, resilience, and recovery. Domestic Violence and the Holidays: A Complex Picture Domestic violence can spike around the holiday season, a trend that many in law enforcement, including Woods, have seen firsthand. While some data suggests a decrease in calls to national hotlines during actual holidays like Thanksgiving or New Year's Day, crisis centers report a significant surge in victims seeking help from late November through January. You can listen to his stories and interview on our website for free in addition to platforms like Apple Podcasts and Spotify, and other major podcast platforms. Experts point to a combination of factors: heightened stress, financial pressures, family tensions, and increased alcohol consumption. All of these can contribute to volatile situations that sometimes explode into violence. “The holidays bring out both the best and the worst in people,” said Woods. “For many families, it's joy. For others, it's barely contained chaos. And sometimes, that chaos turns deadly.” The Thanksgiving Shooting and the Police Trauma response. Understanding the Psychology of Mass Shooters Various groups have studied the psychological backgrounds of mass shooters. Research shows that many perpetrators have troubling histories, including severe childhood trauma and signs of emotional crisis prior to their acts of violence. According to The Violence Project, over 80% of mass shooters were in some form of crisis, and a majority had suicidal ideations before or during the attack. “These aren't just cold, calculated monsters,” Woods said. “Often, they're deeply broken individuals. Understanding that doesn't excuse the act, but it might help us prevent the next one.” Follow the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium and most all social media platforms. The Mission Behind Critical Incidents Founded by Woods, Critical Incidents is more than just a podcast. It's a platform for understanding how defining moments, from near-death experiences to frontline trauma, shape who we are. Each episode features candid conversations with individuals from all walks of life, including first responders, trauma survivors who have faced extraordinary challenges. The Thanksgiving Shooting and the Police Trauma response. Woods explained, “This podcast is about connection. It's about understanding what people go through and how they come out the other side. Sometimes they're stronger. Sometimes they're still healing. But either way, their stories matter.” About Chesterfield County and Its Police Force Chesterfield County, located just south of Richmond, Virginia, is home to a diverse and growing population of over 364,000 residents. The Chesterfield County Police Department, founded in 1914, has a long-standing reputation for professionalism and community service, with approximately 500 sworn officers and over 100 professional staff members. The interview is available as a free podcast on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and podcast website, also available on platforms like Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and most major podcast outlets. Despite its size and resources, no department is immune to the emotional toll of critical incidents like the one that occurred on that Thanksgiving Day. A Call for Awareness and Support Woods hopes that by sharing his story and those of others through The Critical Incidents Podcast, the public will gain a deeper understanding of the realities faced by police officers, trauma survivors, and anyone who's lived through a life-altering event. “The job is tough,” he said. “But it's the human side of these stories that needs to be heard. That's how we learn. That's how we heal.” The Thanksgiving Shooting and the Police Trauma response. Do a search online to find the Critical Incidents Podcast. At his Monday sentencing, Emma Cooley, the mother of murdered Sydney Palmer — who was fatally gunned down by husband Michael Edgington in Kansas last year during a domestic altercation — lambasted her disgraced son-in-law, forcefully telling him “she loved you” while also detailing how he cruelly tormented Palmer's relatives closely following her death with deeply troubling actions and remarks aimed at them. “‘The first thing you asked me was for the PlayStation,' Cooley recalled of her exchange with Edgington after Palmer's death, as reported by the local news Sumner NewsCow. “‘Well, here's your PlayStation,' she calmly stated, immediately following her statement, setting one console on a wooden bench near where he was seated. Palmer, 25, had been arguing with Edgington on July 3 prior to her demise and purportedly hurled a 4.04-ounce concrete trinket at his head, investigators said. “I noticed a swelling on his forehead,” a responding officer noted in the official case document. “Edgington's counteraction involved shooting her using a 9 mm handgun.” “‘I recognize I did something wrong,' he stated at his criminal sentencing, where he was ultimately given 61 months behind bars — about five years — for second-degree murder. “‘But I don't believe I pose a threat to society,' Edgington informed Sumner County District Court Judge William Mott, who imposed the top penalty permitted, in addition to 36 months' probation. Edgington will also be prohibited from owning firearms in the future. In addition to requesting his PlayStation, Edgington further horrified Palmer's relatives by allegedly choosing to remarry in the home he had occupied with Palmer, with the ceremony reportedly taking place within those same walls. “‘This is where you killed your ex-wife and my daughter,' Cooley still said Monday. ‘And you hold a wedding ceremony there simply as though she never existed.'” Moreover, Edgington frequently informed Palmer's relatives that he allegedly acted in self-defense and that Palmer herself was ultimately fully responsible for her own demise, Cooley asserted in ongoing repeated discussions. In statements to authorities, Edgington said: “Sydney suffered from severely manic episodes. A physician had recently discontinued her Vraylar medication, and she reportedly grew furious with me for failing to remove the trash. She immediately proceeded to damage property inside our dwelling, and I asked her to stop. She then grabbed a concrete figure and threatened to throw it at me. I told her to stop. She hurled it, forcefully striking my own head.” “‘She loved you,' Cooley stated on Monday. ‘Even with her final breath for law enforcement, she simply refused to acknowledge you had killed her. She was forever attempting to defend you.'” Edgington, having spent 10 months jailed before securing bond in May 2024, is slated to spend five years one month in state prison. A shooting outside Cessna Elementary School in South Wichita stemmed from a domestic dispute between a husband and wife, authorities confirmed. The couple was dropping off their children for class when the altercation escalated. According to Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter, a Lyft driver had brought the family to the school when the 46-year-old husband allegedly pulled out a gun and shot his 30-year-old wife in the chest. The couple's children had already entered the school when the incident occurred just before 9:15 a.m. Witnesses reported seeing the woman running toward the school for help, with her husband chasing her. A sheriff's deputy arrived on the scene and saw the man pointing the gun at his wife's head. In an attempt to protect the woman, the deputy fired his weapon, shooting the suspect. The Wichita Police Department reported that after the suspect placed the gun to his wife's head, the deputy ordered him to drop the weapon. When he refused and made threatening statements, the deputy fired twice. A brief struggle ensued as the deputy attempted to disarm and apprehend the suspect. Both the husband and wife were transported to the hospital with critical injuries. The husband was reportedly in "code blue" condition, indicating he was either unresponsive or in cardiac arrest. No students or staff members were harmed in the incident, and authorities emphasized that there was no active shooter inside the school. However, afternoon prekindergarten classes were canceled, and parents were given the option to pick up their children early. School officials placed the building on lockdown as law enforcement quickly secured the area. A section of Clarence Street, where the initial shots were fired, was cordoned off as investigators worked to collect evidence. The school's security footage captured the chilling moments when the suspect chased his injured wife toward the school. Sheriff Easter reiterated that the shooting was a result of domestic violence and not a targeted school attack, though the location heightened concerns among parents. “It can be scary for parents,” said Easter. “But law enforcement arrived within two minutes, and the children were never in immediate danger.” Police are continuing to investigate, including questioning the Lyft driver who had transported the family. We are us having a great time hanging out with you guys lately. This week we have some good stuff to talk about. We get a little Politics heavy so if you don't like that then sorry for that. We have a little something special for you guys for our next episode. Just a little teaser to get y'all to come back next week.  So stay tuned for that. Before we get into the meat of the show I have a show I think you all should watch if your a fan of music like me. It's on MAX and the name of the Documentary/series is Stax:Soulsville, USA. Let me know what you think about it. Our first topic of the show takes us to the yard of Supreme  Court Justice Samuel Alito's and his upside down flag that has the Press in a frenzy! While we were recording we had some "Breaking News" that his beach home was seen flying a White Supremacists flag, Our Supreme Court is becoming more and more of an embarrassment daily. We left you guys with a homework assignment last week for the show. I wanted someone to let me know what "A Domestic Dispute" is. I ended up doing the work myself so we will continue that conversation now. Next we have a topic that Cathy has brought to the table. It's been a minute since she has brought something to the table that gets me all worked up. So enjoy this next topic from Cathy. We have a couple sport stories up next on the lists.  The New England Patriots have a new Coach and he is ready to speak up to the Owner on day one. I hope this new hire works out. He is a homegrown player/coach and I'm hoping for the best for him. Then we have to talk about the Kansas City Chiefs Kicker for his hate filled he gave at Benedictine College in Kansas. On to one of the worst places in our country, Texas (in my opinion) to Governor Greg Abbott and him pardoning a convicted murderer at a lack Lives Matter Protest. Why did Abbott pardon the guy? Our last topic is again sports related and one of my favorite hobbies and that is video games. After 14 years the NCAA has a football game coming out on July 5th and I'm all in. I can't wait to play as my Buckeyes and all that talent they have. See you guys next week for Episode 108. Gwinnett police said they are investigating a homicide that appears to be domestic related after a shooting Sunday evening at a Norcross area apartment complex. According to Cpl. M. Evanko, Gwinnett police responded to a person shot call at Canopy Glen Apartments just after 6 p.m. The incident appeared "to have stemmed from a domestic dispute," Evanko said. "When officers arrived on scene, they located an adult male with a gunshot wound who died from his injuries on scene." Evanko said investigators are talking with a female believed to be related to the incident and the investigation is ongoing. The motive for the shooting is unknown. An off-duty Ranlo police officer who shot and killed a suspect who stabbed him multiple times during a dispute in Gaston County has been charged with first-degree murder, according to a press release from the town of Ranlo. Ranlo police responded to a reported stabbing and shooting at a home on Burlington Avenue a little after 2 a.m. on New Year's Day, the town of Ranlo said in a press release. When officers arrived, they determined an off-duty Ranlo police officer, now identified as Kwaku Riley Agyapon, shot and killed a person after being stabbed multiple times. The vote brings the proposal a step closer to becoming reality.  The petition for a larger drive-thru has gotten a lot of attention from the community – some hoping it'll help with traffic backups around the restaurant, while others worry it'll only attract more cars.  After hearing concerns from residents, the Cotswold Chick-fil-A has adjusted its plans to include a walk-up order window and outdoor patio.
