The revolving door at TCB continues this week as Sen taps out and Ro and Kush sub back in. This week Kush is full of yarns and brings forth an interesting conundrum - asking the lads if they would accept a sports-like contract over their normal work contracts, even going to the extreme of hypothesising a 10 year contract at Maccas for $2.5m. Then we are back to regular programming as Kush gets in his weekly plug of his movie review Instagram (@mrzorbasmith). He then floats a new Black Mirroresque review series for his regular page (@kushyyk) where he intends to review people on the pleasantness of their company. Our game this week is “Wonky Words,” as we play the game “Contexto.” This game is very similar to Geoguesser as there is a secret word and with each subsequent guess of the word the game provides you with an indication of how close/far you are from the secret word. Very simple concept, incredibly difficult game.“Compare and Contrast” is back this week. If you are new, this is where we debate and rank various things. This week we go nostalgic as we rank the best iPod touch games - from seminal classics such as Doodle Jump to the incredibly niche Flappy Bird. Also this week: Doobie smoking, Ro's sweet release on his knees, quandaries and Cocaine Bear.Segments this week:The Logue: Tired of reaching around each other (at least on the podcast), the boys have instead decided to reach around the week's news stories, events and viral trends.Wonky Words: We play the popular game “Contexto” - which is essentially a word guessing game.Compare and Contrast: Named in honour of our favourite HSC English essay questions, the boys debate the most pressing issues in society and attempt to agree on a ranked tier list, which may end up in broken friendships and definitely will end up being wrong.___________________________________________________________FULL PODCAST EPISODES

Orla Harris is the Cofounder and COO of SideQuest VR, an early-access testing platform for virtual reality with headquarters in Northern Ireland. Orla and her team provide tools that enable developers to grow a community around their app and solicit feedback from users in the early stages of development. On this episode of Boost VC, Orla joins us to share the origin story of SideQuest VR, explaining how it evolved from side project to startup and when she finally realized it was a business. She describes what it's like to found a tech company in Ireland, discussing how SideQuest built a network of VCs beyond the borders of her home country and why she's optimistic about the startup's continued growth. 130: Navy veteran Kevin Harris is the Founder & Lead Instructor at the Guild of Software Architects, which is new code bootcamp in Frisco, TX that teaches mobile development for iOS and Android devices. Prior to launching The Guild, Kevin was the Lead Wearables Architect at Fossil where he developed the watch faces and micro apps for Fossil's new series of Android Wear based smart watches. Kevin was also an Adjunct Lecturer at the Guildhall at SMU, a Master's level program, where he taught game development, and the mobile architect at ilumi, an IOT startup in Plano, TX which appeared on Shark Tank. His mobile experience includes working on such apps as Words with Friends, Hanging with Friends, Doodle Jump, the official carmax app for iOS, and mobile games for LEGO. https://www.linkedin.com/in/kevin-harris-53774831 Not all military jobs translate into civilian life Who could be more suited to make the most out of a code bootcamp than a military veteran? With their attention to detail, and experience working on teams under stressful conditions, veterans have a lot to offer the tech community. That should be good news for companies looking for new tech workers considering the dire predictions that more and more software projects will be falling behind as the number of unfilled programming positions increases. Unfortunately, even veterans that worked in high-tech military jobs re-enter the civilian workforce with technical skills and training that do not map well to civilian jobs. They have operated or repaired highly elaborate pieces of military equipment and have amazing potential, but lack the skills that will land them a civilian tech job. With that said, The Guild is interested in partnering with any organizations that specialize in helping veterans transition into civilian life through career training. If we work together, we can not only help tech companies find new programmers, we can reduce the number veterans who are unemployed. It is truly a win-win situation for all. In addition to our veteran scholarship of $3000, which is also offered to the spouses of veterans, the Guild also hopes to offer further tuition assistance through a sponsorship program. If you belong to a veterans support group that would be open to helping veterans financially, please let us know. If you are a veteran, or the spouse of a veteran, and you’re interested in breaking into a new career as a junior mobile developer, please contact us and let us know the details of your current situation. The Veteran On the Move podcast has published over 100 episodes giving listeners the opportunity to hear in-depth interviews conducted by host Joe Crane featuring the people, programs and resources to assist veterans in their transition to entrepreneurship: Marine Corps, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard veterans, DOD, entrepreneurship, business, success, military spouse, transition, education, programs and resources. Veteran On the Move has garnered over 500,000 listens verified through Stitcher Radio, Sound Cloud, Itunes and RSS Feed Syndication making it one of the most popular Military Entrepreneur Shows on the Internet Today.
There's a million ways you can spend $10,000 but what would be the best way to make sure you get the biggest bang for your buck? Brian and Ike discuss a few different scenarios on how they would handle a big chunk of money. Today's Developer Diary Ike launched his game Rhythm Friends on iOS and Amazon! Although it's technically his second game he's shipped, it's the first game he started and finished this year living up to the New Year's Resolution of "Ship It". Rhythm Friends is a rhythm tapping game intended for 6-8 year old's. Ike worked with his 6 year old daughter who just started taking piano to help her improve on the feeling of the notes rather than just knowing the counts of each note. He goes into some detail about the gameplay and challenges he faced but all in all this was a great experience and if nothing else a great memento working with his daughter. We wish Rhythm Friends luck and be sure to pass it along to anyone you know with kids in that age group! What Would You Do With $10,000? We decided to challenge ourselves a little and think about what we'd do if we had that kind of money and had a game we were working on, how would we spend that money? Since it depends on what stage you're in and where you want to go next, we explored a few different scenarios. Scenario 1 : The 1-2 Person Programming Team We can break it up into categories: Marketing Key Art Points - Character Store Front Presence For the programmer heavy team, it would be wise to spend your money on art and hopefully you're not making a game that is too character heavy but more of a puzzle game like Doodle Jump. It is really important to have good looking promotional screens, a landing page and an icon because it can give people a vibe of your game. With that said, we would put about $2500 towards getting all the promotional art and marketing materials including a video. An artist can polish anything indefinitely and in the world of art, the saying goes "It's never truly done, it's only abandoned." Here's a breakdown: $2500 - Marketing Materials $500 - Music and Sound Effects $3500 - Characters and Effects $3500 - Backgrounds and Props How do you squeeze the most amount of the highest quality art as possible with the amount of money? Focus on monetizing. In the free-to-play market you want to drive the player to purchase by trying to figure out how to get money in a way that is rewarding for both sides (you and the player). So focus on the up-sell art that gets the consumer looking it and wanting to have it. How much art should you expect? An artist can ask anywhere from $20-$100 per hour. Seasoned Artist - $50-$60 per hour Mid-Level Artist -$30-$40 per hour Junior Artist - $15-$20 per hour If you find an artist that charges $35 per hour, $3500 will get you 100 hours or two and a half weeks of work. It will take the artist a day or two to get acclimated to the style unless you provide them with a style guide with color palates and so forth this helps the artist to not go in a direction you don't want them to. Keep in mind you're probably going to have some lost work. It's really hard to have a game almost 100% done and then plug in the art and it all works perfectly. Some of the work will get lost, called art waste. It also depends on how much business vs art orientated you are. As well as your inspiration and goals. More Art: the game is done when say it's done - can end up spending more money, not having it out as soon but have an amazing game More Business: This is the game - have it all gray boxed in, put in final art and when we're done with the budget we're shipping it. If does well, maybe invest 10-20% back into the title Platforms There is always an expense related to every platform that you launch on, usually a couple hundred bucks. You might have to purchase devices during your development. Brian likes to purchase the older models simple because you develop fo...
It's the beginning of another month, which means it's time once again for Derek and Andy to flip through the pages of the latest Previews catalog. The Two guys find a lot of notable titles in this month's Previews – with notable offerings from Dark Horse, IDW, Image, Drawn and Quarterly, and Fantagraphics – and they share their findings with the usual discerning and humorous mixture that have come to define the “Comics Alternative brand.” Among the moments in this week's episode you will find: Derek's joy at finding another Edgar Allan Poe adaptation from Richard Corben; Andy looking forward to the new DC trade release of a series he originally enjoyed back in the late 1980s, Cinder and Ashe; Derek ragging not only on the Angry Birds phenomenon, but on the fact that IDW is actually jumping on the bandwagon with their new Angry Bird Comics series; Andy's semi-defense of Angry Bird Comics in pointing out the quality creators on the title; Derek still resists; the guys' being pleased that Brian Winkeler and Robert Wilson IV's digital comic, Knuckleheads, is being collected as a trade through IDW; the now-monthly wonderment at Image Comics' output; the revelation of Andy's love of Big Trouble in Little China; the podcast debut of Derek's daughter, Zoe, in her explanation of the app game Doodle Jump; a celebration of Bryan Lee O'Malley's new graphic novel, Seconds; highlights of the usual great output from Drawn and Quarterly (Everywhere Antennas and Petty Theft), Fantagraphics (Bomb Run and Other Stories, Heroes of the Comics, and the new edition of Special Exits), and First Second (Shackleton: Antarctic Odyssey); the Two Guys' curiosity over Liz Plourde and Randy Michaels's self-published How I Made the World; curiosity over Ray Fawkes's new original graphic novel from Oni Press, The People Inside; and a discussion of Titan Comics' acquisition of the Doctor Who license. There's a lot packed into this episode, so sit back, relax, and enjoy the warm, satisfying goodness that is The Comics Alternative.
