In this episode, Rob Calder talks to Drs Caroline Copeland, Patrick Courtney and Paul Royall about their recent article assessing the time it would take for drones to deliver naloxone to people who are overdosing on opioids. The study team used NPSAD (National Programme on Substance Abuse Deaths) data to map out overdoses in Teeside over recent years and then to predict how long it would have taken a drone to make the journey and deliver naloxone to a bystander who would then be able to administer it. They then compared this time with the time it takes ambulances to attend the scene. Along the way they discuss take off stations, weather, traffic congestion, no-fly zones and the importance of considering whether a drone will be destroyed along the way."The initial design we came up with was a sort of cargo transport box on top of the drone, whereby the drone lands and then the bystander can remove the naloxone home kit or naloxone nasal spray from the top of that transport holder. At that point we then follow the guidance and recommendations of the at home naloxone or nasal spray." - Paul RoyallOriginal article: An evaluation of naloxone transit for opioid overdose using drones: A case study using real-world coroner data. Hi #smartcommunity friends! Welcome back to the Summer Series here on the Smart Community Podcast. As you know, we're taking a little break from new content over the Australian summer holidays, and instead we are sharing the replays of a few of your all time favourite episodes. This week we're sharing my interview with Emily Royall, from way back in Episode 122, from mid 2019, soon after I got back to Australia from my Churchill Fellowship trip.Emily is the Smart City Coordinator of the City of San Antonio, Texas. Emily tells us about her passion for advancing equity in Smart Cities, and the Community Driven Smart City model that San Antonio is pursuing. We discuss the digital divide in San Antonio and the equity questions municipalities need to think about when being marketed to by the companies mediating Smart City data. Emily then tells us about a number of really interesting and innovative projects the City of San Antonio is working on, including how they've partnered with kids in the local CoderDojo coding program to get viable prototypes for their community. Emily and I finish our conversation discussing her thoughts on integrating across disciplines and the jobs of the future, as well as the emerging trends of digital justice and digital equity. We'll be sure to get Emily back on the show in the future for a full update about what he's been up to and also how our thinking has progressed since this conversation. But in the meantime, we hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed making it!Find the full show notes at: www.mysmart.communityConnect with Emily on Twitter @emily_royall and LinkedInConnect with me via email: hello@mysmart.communityConnect with My Smart Community via LinkedIn or Twitter and watch on YouTubeThe Smart Community Podcast is produced by Perk Digital.

Who takes care of the PR practitioners and their mental health? With an always-on type of work culture prevailing, how do we take care of colleagues and who do we ensure that we, personally, can do both deep work or that we can disconnect to recharge. We’ll be tackling mental health in PR this week with Rachel Royall. She’s the Communication Director of IBM’s UK Healthcare & Life Sciences. Prior to joining IBM her career covers mostly public sector. She is also a very active member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and a fellow of the Institute for Internal Communication, and a lot of her work, public engagement and teaching speaks about PR’s power and duty to do good. And speaking of good, we’ll also talk ethics, not codes of ethics but rather what to do when unethical behavior are seen and how to expel those practitioners and practices.

We are really talking about two groups of folks that can be overlooked. We obviously want this podcast to revolve around mental health but we purposefully let Jaclyn do her thing and sneak in all sorts of topics she is passionate about in the community she serves. Nutrient recommendations constantly need to be reviewed and updated as genetics change over the years. Lysine, being one of the most critical nutrients pigs receive, definitely deserves some special attention. In this episode, Rafe Royall and I talk about his study identifying the optimal lysine level for grow-finish pigs to maximize growth and maximize income over feed cost for certain genetic lines. It only takes a few minutes to see how you may need to feed more or less lysine to your pigs! Rafe Royall, growing up in the show pig industry, coupled with a background in livestock judging, and involvement in research as an undergraduate led Rafe to pursue graduate studies in swine nutrition. He received his Bachelor's degree in Animal Science with a minor in Chemistry from Texas Tech University in 2020, as well as a Master's degree in Animal Science from Kansas State University in 2022. His Master's research focused on determining Lysine requirements for certain swine genetic lines throughout the growing and finishing phases to develop prediction equations to maximize growth and profitability.
