The earliest abduction cases, like those of Betty and Barney Hill and Antônio Villas Boas, were strange and new. Cases in which people were kidnapped by alien beings were rare. When it comes to certain UFO cases, there are images that become indelibly implanted in your head. Whether it's the Adamski style saucers or the alien beings Whitley Strieber encountered in a cabin in upstate New York (what's with all the alien shaming, Angelo?), the saucers that haunt the mind have definite shapes. In the case of Stefan Michalak and the Falcon Lake Incident, it's a set of burns on his abdomen that became the iconic signature of this case. In May of 1967 Michalak set out for Falcon Lake to mine for silver. Instead he had a UFO encounter that lasted over 30 minutes. It ended when the UFO expelled hot gas, causing the miner to catch fire. He would stumble out of the woods and into one of the best investigated UFO cases in history. On New Years’ Eve 1888, a body was found floating in the Thames at Chiswick. A channel known historically by locals as “the quiet river”. Upon inquisition into the finding, it was said that the body had been in the river for a month. Maybe more. Five days after the body was discovered, the Acton, Chiswick, and Turnham Green Gazette reported on the inquest into the person found in the river and featured the testimony of the subject’s brother. It read in part: “The deceased was 31 as of his last birthday. He was a barrister-at-law, and an assistant master in a school at Blackheath. The witness heard from a friend on the 11th of December that the deceased had not been heard of at his chambers for more than a week. The witness then went to London to make inquiries, and at Blackheath he found that the deceased had got into serious trouble at the school, and had subsequently been dismissed. That was on the 30th of December. The witness had the deceased's personal effects searched where he resided, and found a paper addressed to him. The Coroner read the letter, which was to this effect: - "Since Friday I felt I was going to be like mother, and the best thing for me was to die." The witness, continuing, said “the deceased had never made any attempt on his life before. His mother became insane in July last. He had no other relative.” The jury at the inquest into his death duly returned a verdict of suicide by drowning "whilst of unsound mind." We’ve come a long way, and now I believe we’ve reached the end. Welcome back to Vanished. Tonight we put who I believe to be the man responsible for the Autumn of Terror on trial. Brian steps out of a deus ex machina portal to rejoin Angelo in another thrilling installment of Double Density. It seems as though Double Density is starting to focus a lot more on video games lately, and it all has to do with the fact that it’s video game season! Brian and Angelo briefly touch upon the upcoming PlayStation Classic before pondering what nostalgia bomb Nintendo will drop next. They then have a look at an online library of old arcade games that can be found at archive.org, before moving on to the walkie-talkie feature of watchOS 5, and looking at how kids today like to fake death on Instagram. The duo then examines the release of ultra top-secret CIA jokes and other declassified documents that proved to be slightly disappointing. The episode ends with a discussion of ideas for paranormal musicals, and that’s something you don’t want to miss.
