Cat and Jess are hard at work on completing the final episodes of "MOTHER," She Wrote's epic adventure through EarthBound Beginnings! In this Coffee Break, they share some details for what's in store and pick back up on a thread you may remember from Episode Zero: early in their relationship, Jess and Cat set out to play each other's favorite video games. Jess played Cat's favorite video game, EarthBound, and Cat started playing Jess' favorite video game: Final Fantasy VI (originally released as Final Fantasy III in the US). At long last, Cat has finally finished playing this legendary milestone in RPG video games and in this episode she shares her thoughts on the game, her experiences with it, and how its informed her perspective on the arc of RPG history. Ninten and Lloyd want to ride the rails, but there's something standing in their way that's too big for two kids to tackle... nothing that a military-grade rocket can't fix! With the trains running again, their world opens up exponentially! They dip into lands too dangerous to travel... yet... and hop the Paradise Line to Reindeer, a town ravaged by a pandemic and wealth disparity. Perhaps there are problems even our well-equipped protagonists can't solve. Never fear, dear listener - "relax for a while and watch the world go by. Just as long as we're together we'll be fine - Takin' the Paradise Line!” “MOTHER,” She Wrote mixes audio drama and talk podcast to chronicle the strangest, most thought-provoking, most heart-rending video games ever made: the MOTHER series, as it's called in Japan, and EarthBound as it's called everywhere else. Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I LOVE Earthbound. It's one of my favourite games of all-time. And I'm also quite fond of its long lost younger sibling, Mother 3. But until recently, I'd never played the original Mother/Earthbound Beginnings. That changed over the past few weeks, and I'm not sure that's a good thing... Earthbound Beginnings isn't without its charm, but the non-stop grinding, aimless map, unbalanced enemy encounters and lack of story really make it hard to love. It's not the worst game I've ever played, but it sure isn't it's much more famous younger brother/sequel... I rolled solo this week, added in a dash of listener comments, and explained why I'm glad to have finally played Earthbound Beginnings, and why I'll never do it again. And before we grind, I stumble through another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks me to explain why I don't like Majora's Mask once and for all. Would I ever try speed-running a game? And why is Sony coming up with all these weird peripherals for the PS5??? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 NES RPGs: Crystalis, Dragon Warrior, and Faxanadu.

Joey played part of Resident Evil 4: Otome Edition and almost all of Find Love or Die Trying, Ron played what's available of Don't Take It Personally, I Just Don't Like You: The Camping Trip, and Paul beat Head Over Hooves: My Heart Bleats for You. They were fun! Links are below, if you want to check them out. We also talk through some of the very exciting tidbits from the latest Nintendo Direct. Chrono Cross! EarthBound! Soccer Peach! Switch Sports! This Direct was a feast for some Nintendo fans, so we gush over some of the games we're most excited about. Who saw this one coming? Not me for sure. This Nintendo Direct blew everyone away with huge JRPG announcements. Two in particular rose above the rest. After many months of speculation, the Chrono Cross Remaster rumor turned out to be true. It's coming in April to the delight of so many. The other blockbuster news was the reveal of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. It's only just been announcement but is coming this September to the Switch. But Nintendo wasn't done there. Earthbound, an all time JRPG classic is now available on Nintendo Switch Online along with Earthbound Beginnings. A Live a Live HD-2D remaster is coming to the west for first time and looks very good. Triangle Strategy is getting a new demo you can check out now and carry over your progress into the final game. It's hard to imagine a bigger or better showcase, we were blessed with this one. We had plenty of other news to cover even before the Direct, which means a nice long podcast for your listening pleasure. In podcast news I'm going to make the switch (see what I did there) to Friday releases. Seems like the right thing to in the moment, after a few recent delays and missed news stories. It's not the first time I've moved days, and might not be the last. So look for new episodes each Friday and Sunday Specials about every two weeks (two a month). Thanks for your understanding! Mother, officially known outside of Japan as EarthBound Beginnings, is a role-playing video game developed by Ape and published by Nintendo for the Famicom. The first entry in the Mother series, it was first released in Japan on July 27, 1989. It is modeled on the gameplay of the Dragon Quest series, but is set in the late 20th-century United States, unlike its fantasy genre contemporaries. Mother follows the young Ninten as he uses his great-grandfather's studies on psychic powers to fight hostile, formerly inanimate objects and other enemies. The game uses random encounters to enter a menu-based, first-person perspective battle system. Writer and director Shigesato Itoi pitched Mother's concept to Shigeru Miyamoto while visiting Nintendo's headquarters for other business. Though Miyamoto rejected the proposal at first, he eventually gave Itoi a development team. A North American version of the game was localized into English, but was abandoned as commercially nonviable. A copy of this prototype was later found and circulated on the Internet under the informal title EarthBound Zero. The game was eventually released worldwide under the name EarthBound Beginnings for the Wii U Virtual Console in June 2015.
This week on the Virtual Bully Podcast we discuss the merits of starting a recording session at 3AM. Virtual Homework is a podcast where the hosts (Dana and Sam) alternate each week to force the other to play a game of their choosing. We then talk about the game and use that conversation to talk about other aspects of life. Hilarity Ensues! Forget the game themed specials, this is an N.W.A. themed episode. We got Dre, Eazy, Ice, and Ren over select video game beats in this episode. The latest video game based lyrics corner meshes together the worlds of Earthbound Beginnings and classic N.W.A. I also talk about my early love for gangsta rap, and my current love for Advance Wars!
A grand catchup continues as we clear the track from a busy summer. We're getting slowly back to normalcy with these shows, and there's a few games that we need to get off our chests. Donald and Austen open New Business by tag teaming Lost Dimensions, the Vita (and PS3, but really...) strategy RPG that crosses betrayal, strategy and a stupid amount of DLC. After a double shot of bird watching with Hatoful Boyfriend and Badlands: GOTY Edition, it's time for Donald to stare down the beginnings of his favorite game of all time in Earthbound Beginnings. To say the least, it hasn't aged well. Stephen continues the retro kick with Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards before diving into the world of children's card games actually marketed to children by playing Pokemon TCG Online. Austen finishes with a GameFreak title of his own in Tembo the Badass Elephant before dealing with a couple of adventure games in Life is Strange Episode 4 (SPOILERS from 50 minutes to about 56 minutes) and episode one of the 2015-16 King's Quest titles. How many cheap deaths did Austen find? Tune in to find out.Whatcha Watchin' was scrapped due to games, but that gave us time to address Listener Mail in which we tackle the question of choice as multiplatform owners. (Well, most of us.) After that, it's another News Roundup covering game updates, Dragon Quest, Nintendo's financial, and the introduction of Democracy to the anarchy of PlayStation Plus. Finally, the Mushrooms include a Keiji Infaune takedown, getting stuck in Ohio, and late breaking news that the Final Fantasy XII remaster was actually born (in PITTSBURGH, of all places!)The goal is to be caught up on shows by Labor Day or thereabouts, but drop us an email as we try to return to Famicast parity, Tweet us @nfrpodcast or comment below! The podcast was recorded August 1 and edited by Donald Theriault. All music used under fair use provisions.
Well, after many weeks of guests, we're all finally back. In Under Your Thumb, Anthony has more to say about Fallout 3, along with Golden Sun: The Lost Age, and Earthbound Beginnings. Brian finds himself enjoying Nidhogg, Everybody's Gone To Rapture, and Halo 3 MMC. Justin's week consists of portable titles, starting with Fantasy Life and two smartphone games: Fallout Shelter and Does Not Commute. Lastly, Stephen wraps up this week's Under You Thumb with some Sega CD titles and a group discussion of witnessing some CD-i games live in action. And in this week's news, well, we finally nail down that Halo Bet, among other idle chit-chat and questionable snack choices. Creep us on Facebook Stalk us on Twitter Or throw us that review on iTunes You can also check out Justin's weekly artwork here. And be sure to check out what we're doing at our website: Pixelated Points.
This week on The Free Cheese Podcast: We talk more about Batman: Arkham Knight. Joe finally reviews the game and the newly released DLC, "A Matter of Family." We take a break from the Batman chatter to go a bit deeper into EarthBound Beginnings and explore the insides of Shigesato Itoi's mind. Marc returns to the basics and enjoys some Super Smash Bros. for his birthday, and tells us a bit about his trip to New York where he visited the Nintendo World Store. This week, Marc asks the question, "Why do we play video games?" We try to get to the root of the question and discover what draws us to play video games over something else and where we see ourselves with games in the years to follow. Don't forget to check out AmiiboHunt on the App Store if you're stuck driving from store to store in hopes of finding that rare amiibo. Our good friend developed this app so that we don't have to waste time anymore and we can see what is in stock before starting the car.
This week on The Free Cheese Podcast: We remember Satoru Iwata. We went to the arcade and played some of gaming's greatest games, and we fill in the week with our usual Super Smash Bros. sessions. Joe explores a bit more of EarthBound Beginnings, slowly begins to understand Splatoon, and continues to wonder why Warner Bros. hates Arkham Knight. This podcast, our passion for video games, and everything that we do on The Free Cheese would not be what it is without the contributions to the industry made by Satoru Iwata. He will be greatly missed. Thank you Satoru Iwata.

What do we do now? Every game since Duke Nukem Forever that we were sure would never come out is now coming out. Mother? Shenmue III? Final Fantasy VII Remake? The Last Guardian? Check, check, check, and check. Plus, if you want to play your Xbox 360 games on your Xbox One, Microsoft is going to start allowing that with 100 titles this fall. Vinnk and Sean weren't right about anything predicted ahead of E3, and -- honestly -- we couldn't be happier. We talk about these games that were "never" going to come out, plus a whole lot more about what happened at this year's E3. It's been a wild couple of weeks for The Unlikeliest Things Ever: A single conference at E3 brought us the return of The Last Guardian, news of the long-awaited Final Fantasy VII remake, and Shenmue's glorious rise from the ashes. But just a few days before this madness, Nintendo had its own bomb to drop: The eShop launch of the 1989 RPG Mother, which the company originally planned to release stateside in 1991. So what's the deal with this NES installment of a series most of us know as EarthBound? Listen in for the next 15 minutes, and Bob will tell you why you should care... and come prepared. This week on The Free Cheese Podcast: MOTHER IS COMING HOME! We talk about the recently announced and released EarthBound Beginnings, the first ever North American release of 1989's Mother from Nintendo and Shigesato Itoi. We also discuss the Nintendo World Championships 2015, and how the event turned out. Most of our week involved Super Smash Bros., so conveniently there was a Super Smash Bros. Direct that debuted Roy, Ryu, and a lot of other content for the game. Finally, Joe, Marc, and Kyle share their predictions for Nintendo at E3 2015.
E3 DAY ZERO! Nintendo talked about new Smash Brothers DLC this morning, announced Earthbound Beginnings on the Virtual Console, and showed games at the Nintendo World Championships this afternoon. I talk a little bit about Mario Maker but expect more details after their press conference on Tuesday. Tonight Bethesda kicked off E3 with a bunch of info. Doom, Battlecry, Dishonored 2, Dishonored Definitive Edition, Elder Scrolls Online, Elder Scrolls Legends, Fallout 4 and Fallout Shelter were all talked about. I relay some of that info here. There was also a Dota 2 overhaul announced Friday after I recorded so that's also in here as a little added bonus. More press conferences tomorrow! complex.computer
