American Psycho is a 2000 satirical horror film directed by Mary Harron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Guinevere Turner. Based on the 1991 novel by Bret Easton Ellis, it stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a New York City investment banker who apparently leads a double life as a serial killer. Willem Dafoe, Jared Leto, Josh Lucas, Chloë Sevigny, Samantha Mathis, Cara Seymour, Justin Theroux, and Reese Witherspoon appear in supporting roles. The film blends horror and black comedy to satirize 1980s yuppie culture and consumerism, exemplified by Bateman. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week, Catching Up On Cinema is joined by Kyle's brother Nik to review John Milius', Conan the Barbarian (1982)! Based on the popular pulp fiction character created by author Robert E. Howard, the film is a violent, mythic tale of swords and sorcery. Hot on the heels of his star making turn in the documentary, Pumping Iron (1977), the film serves as one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's earliest starring roles. Financially back by powerhouse producers Dino De Laurentiis and Edward R. Pressman, written by Oliver Stone, and directed by Hollywood wild man, John Milius, the film is a massive and thoughtfully conceived experience, confident in it's intent and tone. Brandishing production design by Alien (1979) designer Ron Cobb, and a magnificent, operatic score composed by Basil Poledouris, the film dazzles the eyes and ears during it's numerous, wordless interludes. Packed with talent on the screen and behind the scenes, the film is a near timeless adventure epic that has was massively successful at it's time of release, and has since gone on to be remembered as one of Schwarzenegger's better films.
Bret Easton Ellis' book “American Psycho” was published in 1991 under much controversy. The initial publisher cancelled the contract because of “aesthetic differences” with the content. The new publisher wouldn't release it in hardback until 2012. Several countries refused to release it and many only released it shrink-wrapped, only available to those over 18. Such controversy often spurs more in Hollywood to nab the property for cinematic adaptation, and even though Edward R. Pressman secured the rights right away, it still took nearly a decade to get the film made. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Mary Harron series with her 2000 film American Psycho. We talk about the dark satire of the book and how it is easy to misread satire in such a bloody violent film, but how the film's humor really helped it come through more. We look at the way Christian Bale takes on the role of Patrick Bateman and some of his influences in the role. We talk more about getting the book to the screen and the various hands attached at points in time. We debate the unreliable narrator throughout the movie and our interpretations on what's real vs. what's not. We discuss the use of pop culture and how that ties to Bateman's personality. We compare the film to Wall Street which is an interesting one especially as Oliver Stone had been on board as director at one point. And we ponder the existence of the mysterious Davis... It's a strong film and certainly a favorite of ours, albeit a difficult one to watch. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. The Classic Film: What Lies Beneath (2000) "The wife of a university research scientist believes that her lakeside Vermont home is haunted by a ghost - or that she is losing her mind” (IMDb.com). A simple, but surprisingly underrated ghost story, What Lies Beneath could have used a little more time and effort, but is still pretty entertaining. The only question is: is the ghost real? The Modern Film: Insidious (2010) "A family looks to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further” (IMDb.com). Chris & Kelsey prepare for a bad winter this year and are surprised to find two holiday-themed horror flicks that don't suck! The Classic Film: Christmas Evil (1980) "A toy factory worker, mentally scarred as a child upon learning Santa Claus is not real, suffers a nervous breakdown after being belittled at work, and embarks on a Yuletide killing spree” (IMDb.com). This holiday favorite of camp icon John Waters is a slow boil but it's a surprisingly unique take on the killer Santa trope. It manages to take itself very seriously and still be fun at the same time. The Modern Film: A Christmas Horror Story (2015) "Interwoven stories that take place on Christmas Eve, as told by one festive radio host: A family brings home more than a Christmas tree, a student documentary becomes a living nightmare, a Christmas spirit terrorizes, [and] Santa slays evil” (IMDb.com). While the vignettes never should have been interwoven in the first place and some are not as good as the rest (::cough:: the students ::cough::), a delightful tone and killer ending really redeem this holiday anthology. As the age of 4 or 5 he read and fell in love with the H.G. Wells 1896 book The Island of Dr. Moreau, the story of a doctor who creates sentient beings from animals by the way of vivisection. Richard Stanley was disappointed in the previous two film adaptions of the work and dreamed that one day he would be able to make the film right. In 1996, he got his chance to make a big budget film Doctor Moreau. It didn’t go well! Ted sold his debut novel, Eat What You Kill, to St. Martin's Press for publication on March 25, 2014. Famed Hollywood producer Edward R. Pressman (Wall Street, American Psycho, The Crow, etc.) has purchased the film rights. Acclaimed performer Armand Schultz will read the audiobook for Recorded Books, which will also be released in March. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, Ted began his career as an entrepreneur, starting a political consulting firm in Louisville, Kentucky, his home town. He sold his company's assets and returned to Vanderbilt University, where he earned a JD and MBA in finance. In his role as an attorney, Ted represents entrepreneurs who often need more than accomplished counsel – the excitement and stress of conceiving a new venture demands sound business advice, shared passion, experienced leadership, and the empathy that only a fellow entrepreneur can provide. Ted serves as the General Counsel of Icebreaker Entertainment, LLC, a multi-brand consumer products company with products in stores including Target, Walmart, Kohl's, Dollar General, Barnes & Noble, Five Below, and more. Founded by Ted's wife, entrepreneur and contemporary artist Christi Scofield, the company is expanding to Europe in 2014. Christi & Ted are the co-authors of the Cocktails & Curiosities travel books. With the tagline “bar crawls for smart people,” the tours combine the best elements of walking tours with the revelry of pub crawls. Ted has extensive media experience including appearances as a political commentator on WPIX Channel 11 in New York City. He has been quoted in USA Today, The New York Times, BusinessWeek and dozens of other regional and national publications. Ted lives in Manhattan with his wife, Christi. They were married in November of 2007 on the island of Anguilla.
