Today on Mea Culpa, I'm joined by Yale Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a leading expert on leadership, corporate ethics, and government accountability. He's the Senior Associate Dean at the Yale School of Management, organizer of the CEO Summit, and author of “Firing Back,” where he wrote about Donald Trump. After spending a weekend with him at Yale, I knew I had to bring him on the show. We break down the dangerous mix of spectacle and power behind Trump's second-term agenda, from chaotic trade wars and hollow cabinet picks to the politicization of education and dismantling of oversight. Professor Sonnenfeld offers chilling insights into how Trump's reality-TV ethos is shaping public policy, why authoritarianism feeds on chaos and loyalty, and what business leaders and civil society must do now to defend our democracy. Perhaps no movie embodies "delayed by September 11th" better than Barry Sonnenfeld's BIG TROUBLE, the first of two Sonnenfeld joints we'll talk about on this odyssey. The cast is nuts, but is the movie any good? Tune in and find out!
Perhaps the top colorist in his field, Stefan Sonnefeld joins us for our 200th episode! If you aren't aware of Stefan, you've almost certainly seen his work. Some of his recent projects include “Top Gun: Maverick,” “The White Lotus,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3.” His credit list includes some of the biggest franchises in our business, including “Star Wars,” “Star Trek,” “Jurassic Park,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Transformers,” and many more. Just a few of the A-List directors and producers he has worked with are: Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, Michael Mann, Martin Scorsese, Zack Snyder, Tom Cruise, Michael Bay, Bradley Cooper, Steven Zaillian, Spike Jonze, Gore Verbinski, Tim Burton, Matt Reeves, JJ Abrams, George Clooney, Tony Gilroy, and Judd Apatow. So what does it take to be a top colorist in Hollywood, working for some of the biggest personalities in the business?“Well, it's not just the director, it's a lot of people now… So it's a team sport. Everybody plays a part in it. And it's why it's so enjoyable for me. You have to involve a lot of people, but in general, the director, let's say that's the main person. You have to have a good relationship with that person and you have to be able to interpret what they're saying and get that onto the screen. And to do it quite quickly too, because it's a lot of effort and work and money that goes into these projects. And some people talk in technical terms. And some people, like a Michael Mann for instance, talk through emotions. Like, ‘Hey, [the character is] very this [way] in the scene. And he's feeling this. And this is what's going to happen. And this is what just happened. And therefore this is what I want.' And I'm sort of interpreting that, in a color way, and [I'll] put it on the screen and he'll be like, ‘great, that's it!' Or, ‘no, that's not what I meant. It should be this.'”—Stefan Sonnenfeld, Senior Colorist, Founder and CEO, Company 3Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Institute and check out Dolby.com. Harvard's Lawrence Tribe has forcefully remarked, “there can be no justification for halfway measures, let alone for doing nothing while Ukraine is destroyed. Inaction is an illusion: it would represent a cowardly decision to appease and to encourage further aggression around the world.” Similarly, 80 years ago, FDR warned, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today.” Interpreting that in the context of Russia's illegal violation of Ukraine's sovereign borders, Jeffrey Sonnenfeld argues that now is the time to act and seize Russia's $300 billion in frozen assets to support a Ukrainian victory over an imperialistic aggressor. ---------- Jeffrey Sonnenfeld is Lester Crown Professor of Leadership Practice and a Senior Associate Dean of the Yale School of Management. The Dean of the Yale School of Management Jeff Sonnenfeld discusses the Israel Conflict.
Jeffrey Sonnenfeld is the Deal of the Yale School of Management. He discusses the CT investment Management fiasco.
It is late 1998, Wild Wild West is well into its production, and things are not going well. The film has gone through a stunning roster of would-be stars - Tom Cruise, George Clooney, and Mel Gibson among them - before landing on Will Smith, who turned down the lead role in an obscure sci-fi picture called The Matrix from a couple of fringe indy filmmakers named the Wachowski siblings in order to sign on to director Barry Sonnenfeld's sci-fi/Western mashup adventure. The stars have little chemistry. None of them are happy with the material. Wild Wild West has burned through six writers and several reimaginings. Sonnenfeld - coming off a string of hits in The Addams Family, Get Shorty, and his previous team-up with Smith, Men in Black - sits at a table opposite producer Jon Peters. "I've lost control of the film," he tells Peters. "It has no story, no core, no charm - the jokes don't work and the tone is all over the place." Peters takes a deep breath. He looks down at the table and then up at Sonnenfeld. Suddenly, he slams his fist on the table, shoots up from his chair, and screams at his director. "DAMN IT! I don't care if it has no plot! I don't care if the actors hate it!! I don't care if it's miscast!!! I. ONLY. CARE. ABOUT. GIANT. METAL. SPIDERS. Get that spider onto the big screen. Nothing else matters!!" Peters takes another breath. He sits back down. He looks a startled Sonnenfeld right in the eye. "Nothing. Else. Matters." Wicky wicky wah wah. We're joined this week by Dan Cólon (@DanColon) and Mike Manzi (@the_mikestir), hosts of The Monsters That Made Us.
Daniel Sonnenfeld connects people through his values. By believing in integrity, transparency, and getting things done, he brings together the deaf & hearing communities, the LGBTQ+ & straight communities, and the tech & luddite communities, with a kindness that everyone remembers and an emphasis on having fun. Immediately following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, about a dozen businesses cut ties with the nation in a show of solidarity with the Ukrainian people. The United States and our NATO allies imposed severe sanctions against Russia, as well Russian business leaders, politicians, and Putin himself. Professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld and his team, sparked by the volunteered withdrawal from private businesses, began reporting on those 12 companies, leading to a frenzy of other companies exiting Russia or claiming to. The list Professor Sonnenfeld and his team created grew to 75, then 500, and is now at 1300 companies, with 1100 of those no longer conducting business with Russia in some form. Recently, there's been much public speculation about whether government sanctions and exited businesses are enough to dissuade Putin and the Russian people. Putin has been vocal that these disturbances have had no consequences on his economy. This disinformation has created confusion as to the actual state of the Russian economy, and whether the sanctions are working. Professor Sonnenfeld, a senior associate dean and Lester Crown professor at Yale, made it made it his mission to accurately research and report on this list of companies and the effect their withdrawal has had. To aid him, Professor Sonnenfeld leaned on Steven Tian. Steven is the director of research at Yale School of Management's Chief Executive Leadership Institute, an organization that Professor Sonnenfeld is also the founder and CEO of. Jeffrey and Steven continue to dispel these myths with their powerful research on national media, at the White House, and at the Washington Foreign Press Center Briefing on “The Economic Impact of Sanctions on Russia.” Jeffrey, a long-time friend of Jim's, and Steven, a recent friend, discuss and share their experiences here on Celebration Chatter. I can't tell you how excited I am for today's episode. I had the pleasure to speak to the legendary director Barry Sonnenfeld. We discuss his idiosyncratic upbringing in New York City, his breaking into film as a cinematographer with the Coen brothers, and his unexpected career as the director behind such huge film franchises as The Addams Family and Men in Black, and beloved work like Get Shorty, Pushing Daises, and A Series of Unfortunate Events. We also chat about the time he shot nine porno films in nine days. That story alone is worth the price of admission.I don't think Will does get upstaged because his reaction is always funnier than what is actually happening. That is also the reason Tommy is funnier than Will.In his new book Barry Sonnenfeld, Call Your Mother: Memoirs of a Neurotic Filmmaker shares his laugh-out-loud memoir about coming of age. Constantly threatened with suicide by his over-protective mother, disillusioned by the father he worshiped, and abused by a demonic relative, Sonnenfeld somehow went on to become one of Hollywood's most successful producers and directors. His book is written with poignant insight and real-life irony, the book follows Sonnenfeld from childhood as a French horn player through graduate film school at NYU, where he developed his talent for cinematography. His first job after graduating was shooting nine feature-length pornos in nine days. From that humble entrée, he went on to form a friendship with the Coen Brothers, launching his career shooting their first three films.Though Sonnenfeld had no ambition to direct, Scott Rudin convinced him to be the director of The Addams Family. It was a successful career move. He went on to direct many more films and television shows. Will Smith once joked that he wanted to take Sonnenfeld to Philadelphia public schools and say,“If this guy could end up as a successful film director on big-budget films, anyone can.”His book is a fascinating and hilarious roadmap for anyone who thinks they can't succeed in life because of a rough beginning.Barry Sonnenfeld's philosophy is,“Regret the Past. Fear the Present. Dread the Future.”This EPIC conversation is almost two hours and had me on the floor laughing one minute and in absolute shock the next. This is by far one of my favorite interviews I have ever done on the show.So sit back, grab a drink and enjoy my conversation with Barry Sonnenfeld.

Jeffrey Sonnenfeld discusses his research into the companies that have left Russia in the wake of the country's invasion of Ukraine – and the ones that have stayed behind. Sonnenfeld is the Lester Crown professor of management practice at the Yale School of Management and director of the Yale Chief Executive Leadership Institute. Ali Noorani updates us on the latest immigration headlines, focusing on Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis controversial moves to bus undocumented migrants to D.C. and Delaware. More than 450 companies, from Exxon to Starbucks to H&M, have partially or fully withdrawn from Russia since the country's invasion of Ukraine began, but many Western companies have yet to abandon their Russian operations, according to a now-viral corporate watchlist compiled by Yale management professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld. We talked to Sonnenfeld to help us look further. Christopher Low explains a big move in the bond market. The House Oversight Committee wants to look into how Credit Suisse of Switzerland is handling sanctions against the Russian elite.

McDonald's, BP, Netflix and hundreds of other companies have enlisted in the West's pushback against Vladimir Putin. Since the start of Russia's invasion, several hundred U.S. companies have announced plans to withdraw from or step down their operations in the country. The idea, says Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a professor at the Yale School of Management, is to make Russia such a pariah that Putin is forced to back down.Sonnenfeld, who's been called a “C.E.O. whisperer,” is working with his team to compile a corporate watchlist for Russian engagement that effectively serves as a hall of fame, and a hall of shame. In this conversation with Kara Swisher, he discusses when business blackouts will reach a tipping point and result in real change — the way the anti-apartheid boycott did in South Africa.Kara and Sonnenfeld debate whether a “South Africa moment” is possible when big companies like Koch Industries refuse to leave and when China's ascendance presents a completely different economic context. They also discuss domestic cases of corporations taking a stand on politics, from Disney's fiasco with Florida's so-called Don't Say Gay bill to the backlash over voting rights bills in Georgia. And Kara asks Sonnenfeld whether morality should really be the business of C.E.O.s. “When people say to C.E.O.s, get back in your lane,” he replies, “this is the lane of business.”You can find transcripts (posted midday) and more information for all episodes at nytimes.com/sway, and you can find Kara on Twitter @karaswisher.

Many companies last month stopped making political donations, particularly to members of Congress who voted against certifying the presidential election results, with the movement owing much to a CEO meeting held just hours before the Capitol insurrection. Dan talks with Yale School of Management's Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, who convened that gathering and says CEOs are standing firm. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
