Send us a textGetting proper nutrition for endometriosis is a huge step in the healing process. But with all the misleading information out there, knowing what to eat and how to get all the nutrients you need can feel overwhelming. Eating for endometriosis isn't about following one perfect diet that works for everyone. Instead, it's about creating a diet that works best for your unique body as an Endo Warrior. In today's episode, I'm diving into the top six nutrients studies have shown to be effective for endometriosis. I'll share what these nutrients do, how they support healing, and how to focus your diet around them to feel your best.In this episode, you'll hear:-Busting myths about nutrition and endometriosis.-The Top 6 Nutrients to focus on, including:1. Antioxidants – What they are, how they reduce inflammation, and the best food sources.2. Omega-3s – Their anti-inflammatory benefits, how they impact endometriosis, and where to find them in your diet.3. Vitamin D – Why it's essential, signs of deficiency, and how to safely get enough (without overdoing it!).4. Magnesium – The connection between magnesium and pain relief, the best food sources, and deficiency signs.5. Iron – Why it's critical for energy and recovery, and the best dietary sources.6. Zinc – How it supports immune function, wound healing, and hormonal balance, plus the signs of deficiency or excess.I always recommend a food-first approach when it comes to getting your nutrients. Supplements can be helpful, but they're meant to be just that—supplements. A nutrient-dense diet is the foundation for healing. Alex Smith is a classic multihyphenate! She's an ex musical theatre performer, a personal trainer and life coach and most importantly is an endometriosis advocate. At the age of 11 years old Alex started her periods. From this moment on, everything changed for Alex. She spent huge chucks of the month with a whole host of severe side effects including crippling pain and even fainting. For years it felt as if Alex was screaming into the wind. All she was asking for was someone to listen. The general attitudes of everyone including medical professionals (obviously not all but Alex is telling her story as it was for her) was that she was a ‘drama queen'. Her situation was so severe that she had to leave musical theatre college as she was bleeding so badly she was severely anaemic. Her upbringing although loving and caring with very supportive parents, was in part difficult due to it being a religious upbringing and therefore conversations about the body were much more tricky and not as free flowing. Fast forward a STAGGERING 19 years to 2020 and then, only then did Alex have someone listen to her and get a diagnosis of Endometriosis, and we might add, one of the worst cases the doctor who was treating her had ever seen.Alex generous shares with us exactly what endometriosis is and the further education needed in this field to ensure other woman are listened to. Alex is now a life coach across many areas but specialising in Women's Health and is a true ‘Endo Warrior.' She is building her ‘Flareless' brand where her coaching helps women manage their symptoms with some of Alex's own healing journey research. Alex has just had a successful retreat and will be organising more in the future. Alex really brings to the fore the issues around women's health and investigation and this whole conversation is fascinating, with such an insight into what it is like to choose a purpose driven life of service and advocacy. We think you are small but fierce! Yellow is for endometriosis awareness! I'm of the opinion, women, especially black women are not taken seriously enough in the medical field. As much as I am an advocate the health of black women, I can only speak so much since i'm a man. Thats why my friend Ty stepped through this week to speak on this topic and about her journey, not struggle, with endometriosis! She speaks on her journey dealing with the condition itself and obstacles she's overcome to be the endo warrior she is today!
Have you ever experienced painful period symptoms and wondered if they were outside of “the norm”? What is “the norm” anyway? Did you wonder if it could be endometriosis, but weren't exactly sure what that would look and feel like? This week on The Period Feels, Nadya, Neddy, and Sam unpack some easily accessible, yet potentially confusing, definitions of endometriosis--some capable of complicating an already-murky conversation around the disease. We then call upon the experts, starting with Sam (@samxendo on TikTok and @sam.endogram on Instagram), a 22-year-old stage 4 Endo Warrior, who has gained a social media following for her honest portrayal of what it's like to live with endometriosis. We also hear from Dr. Dan Martin, Scientific and Medical Director at the Endometriosis Foundation (EndoFound), who helps us understand what can and should be expected from doctors when you're exploring painful and confusing symptoms. There are so many illnesses that often go undiagnosed for a long period of time. Sometimes, we have symptoms, pain, or things happening to our body, yet we write it off as something that will just “go away”, but often it's on the doctor's side that diagnosis is missed. My guest in this episode is Christina Paruag, and she's sharing her story about her endometriosis diagnosis and the journey it took for her to get there. She's raising awareness for all women to pay attention to signs and signals our bodies are trying to show us. Christina is a content creator, public speaker and endometriosis advocate. She became an entrepreneur, editor-in-chief and consultant after launching her first business FemEvolve as a media platform and magazine, and later a business and events consulting agency. For episode ten, we speak with Endometriosis warrior, Tiara Jackle, who has been living with stage four endometriosis for many years. Endometriosis is a disease with no cure where the tissue - similar to the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus - grows on the outside which can lead to cyst formation, adhesions, and pain. Chronic pain – typically, pelvic pain - is often associated with endometriosis, along with pain during sexual activity, bowel movements, or menstrual cycles. During the episode, Tiara educates us all about Endo, where the gold-standard for diagnosis is a surgical laparoscopic exploration and biopsy. In addition to having two excision surgeries to help manage her endometriosis, Tiara has tried a variety of other techniques to manage her condition such as pelvic floor physiotherapy, and by following an Auto-Immune Wellness protocol diet (see the shows notes for more information). Tiara explains the difficult process she went through in order to get diagnosed over a ten year period, and the dismissal and devaluation she felt was a woman dealing not only with chronic pain but a reproductive health issue that was not taken seriously when trying to seek care. She shares some powerful insights about having to be the expert of your own body when on a pain journey, and the importance of educating yourself in order to advocate for the best treatment options and to start feeling well again. What is it like to be an Endo Parent? This week, Ellie chats with Julian and Amanda Abbott, the parents of Endo Warrior daughters Elizabeth and Sarah. They share their stories of emergency department disasters, discrimination at the workplace, and the importance of having advocates by your side.
Today we speak with Endo Warrior/Chronic illness advocate, Sam Abel. Sam is a 21-year-old full-time college student at UCLA from Southern California with Stage 4 Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, and Interstitial Cystitis. After 6 years of symptoms, countless doctors telling Sam that there was nothing wrong, and three surgeries, she finally received a full diagnosis. It has been challenging during and after the diagnosis process, but social media has been her way to cope and use her voice to share her message. Through social media, she aims to raise awareness for these chronic illnesses, to support and connect with other warriors, and to show others how she is managing her chronic illnesses through her 20s. In this episode we discuss. 1) The challenge and importance of continuing to be an advocate for your own health, and the emotions Sam experienced while she fought to be heard and supported. 2) Endometriosis/Adenomyosis/& IC, has been incredibly isolating as it is not talked about enough in the education system or medical system. Sam does an incredible job describing and explaining these auto-immune disorders. 3) Sam is using her voice and her social media platform to help younger generations to be fully aware of these diseases, as early intervention is key to better outcomes. I want the world to understand that it's not just a bad period, it is so much more than that, and should be taken more seriously. We've got Michaela Abenson back on the podcast this week and if you didn't hear her episode back in August 2020 - that episode is one of the ones that gets brought up to me more than most as a really important and inspiring conversation. Michaela has a condition called endometriosis, something that affects 1 in 10 women, but barely anyone, even medical professionals, know much about what it is, why it occurs and even worse… how to effectively treat or cure it… In that last episode Michaela talks about what it's been like to have endo, to go through numerous surgeries, the impact it's had on her life, her ability to work and the stress of having a daughter who may one day suffer from it herself… We ended that chat with Michaela about to have a life-changing surgery that would supposedly change everything… It did, but not in the way she expected, and we talk about what things are like now almost a year later. -- This episode is sponsored by Northern Powerhouse Media. Lily lives in Sunny, California. She is a Registered Dietitian and a Masters of Science!! (She is wicked smart!) I was very excited to chat with her because I have questions about diet, exercise, and products that people with Endo should use to help ease our inflammation. If you want to listen to Lily's tips skip to 52:00. * Trigger warning, fertility, miscarriage, pregnancy discussed in this episode. I asked Lily to share her journey first before we got into her advice. Lily has stage II Endo. Her pain started early on and was very severe on the first day of her period. She went on birth control for many years, and her period did not come back for 2 years. Once it did return she was not in a great deal of pain but it did begin to build a few years later. Her symptoms intensified but she thought this was normal. In her late 20's she wanted to begin to grow her family this is when she really started to notice that something was off. An ectopic pregnancy leads her to her Endo diagnosis after she had a miscarriage 8 months prior. At this point, she still did not really understand what Endo means. Listen in to hear her full journey, and how she is going to have excision surgery soon. Want to keep the conversation going?
