Learn more about Erin's health coaching services, listen to her podcast, or connect with Erin Kerry at: www.sparkingwholeness.com Here are three key takeaways from the episode: Improve body image by addressing internal issues of the heart, instead of just physical appearance. Vitamin D is essential for overall health, and the sun is the easiest way to get it. However, individualized, safe sun exposure is important and may require help such as an app like D Minder. Morning sun exposure can stimulate the production of serotonin, which can regulate sleep cycles and improve mood all of which can help you feel better about your body and improve your body image. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this episode with functional medicine trained health coach Erin Kerry is kicking it off with what your body really needs. Your body needs to feel safe to heal and thrive. That's true for emotional safety, and it's absolutely true for physiological safety. Unfortunately, due to fancy food marketing and years of junk science twisted to benefit the food companies, we have commonly consumed foods that are keeping your body in an unsafe, stressed out state. We have strayed so far from food that our great-grandparents ate that our bodies are sounding the alarm on every level - yet we keep trying the newest things. This a list of the five "health imposters" that Erin believes are creating long-term chaos in the body's ability to function optimally - from a cellular level to neurotransmitter level to every area in between. These five trends masquerading as health could be extremely destructive, especially when habitual. Erin follows that list up with five things that could be beneficial for just about everyone's mental health. There is hope! Today's episode is a compassionate letter to Gwyneth Paltrow who, on Instagram this week, talked about her "wellness plan" which included her sharing what she eats in a day. If you didn't get to see the interview, you can learn more in this New York Post article which quipped that Gwyneth's daily food routine sounded like, "colonoscopy prep." But the goal of today's podcast is not to criticize or condemn Gwyneth. Instead, in this open letter, author and Christian body image coach, Heather Creekmore gently encourages Gwyneth with some data and science to help her see that her "wellness" plan may actually be related to sickness. Heather shares the truth in love with this celebrity who has pressures around her body and appearance that are greater than what most women can understand. Heather shares with Gwyneth some of the data around how dangerous it is to a body to eat this little each day, and how many of the health issues--both mental and physical--that we face as epidemics today--may be connected to starvation diets and calorie restriction. Gwyneth isn't a woman who needs more criticism. She's a woman who needs more love and compassion to help her fight the lies of body image idolatry and disordered eating. Let's pray that she will see the freedom offered through Christ alone. Find out more about Heather Creekmore, Christian body image coach, and Compared to Who?. The CDC reported that three out of five teen girls experienced persistent feelings of hopelessness in 2021. There are many things contributing to adolescent hopelessness, and while there are differences between the world of today and the world when Erin Kerry was diagnosed, the treatment options haven't changed. The treatment options available in the 90s are the same being offered today, 30 years later: medication and therapy. Unfortunately, those limited options are not treating the root of the issue, and in some cases, may make things worse. Erin created a list of contributing root causes to her depression from the functional medicine lens, in hopes that it will help someone take a closer look at potential factor that are not being offered through traditional treatment. This information is not meant to treat, diagnose, or cure, and does not take the place of medical advice given by a practitioner. Key Topics: - How the oral birth control pill may increase depression - How antidepressants increase the risk of depression and suicidality in some teens and adults - Toxic thoughts and the impact of low self-esteem on physical health - The way antibiotics contribute to mental health issues - Unresolved trauma and how talk therapy rarely makes a dent in healing it - Overly processed foods and what they do to neurotransmitter function - How exercise continues to be the most powerful tool for mental health in the research Plus, other root causes and a call for parents and medical practitioners to fight for these teens!
