They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23, ESV One of my favorite times in the morning is before the sun rises. I get up while it is still dark, grab my journal and Bible and head downstairs. I turn on the coffee and go sit on the couch while I wait for it to brew. Those are the moments when the house is quiet and I get to sit and just breathe and relax. Although I am still a little sleepy, I open my journal or my Bible and start with prayer. Over the past thirty years of walking with God I have met with God in a variety of ways and times during the day. But there is something special about getting up and watching the sun rise while meditating on His Word. The sun reminds us that God is faithful. Everyday we do not doubt the the sun will rise. We believe, no matter what is going on in our world, the sun will shine. It might be cloudy and stormy, but the sun eventually comes out. Every morning we have this physical reminder of a powerful truth from God’s Word. In the book of Lamentations the author mourns and cries out to God because horror and destruction surround him on a daily basis. He wakes up each morning and hears more bad news. We can surely relate to that! In the middle of this book we see a shift in His perspective. Instead of waking up and focusing on all of the bad news, the author of Lamentations says he wakes up and thinks about the faithfulness of God. Each morning we have a reminder in the sun that God will be faithful but when I think about a New Year I am also encouraged with the thought that “new mercies” are waiting for me as well. Yes, we have God with us each day, but each year, at beginning as we feel that fresh new start we can take moment and think about what new mercies mean for the new year. First, we see that God’s compassion and mercy are linked together. The word for “compassion” can also mean tender love, like a mother has for the child growing in her womb. God loves us so deeply, so tenderly, so intimately and this should give us reason to trust Him in the coming year. Maybe this past year has been hard when it comes to love. People tend to disappoint us and cannot love us perfectly. This is not God. In this new year may we come to God freely knowing that His compassion and tender love is waiting for us. We also see God’s mercies are directly related to God’s faithfulness. Maybe you are like me and don’t make new year’s resolutions. I often have a general idea of what kind of goals I want to accomplish. As I’ve gotten older I feel more discouraged at the end of the year if I make to many goals. I’m not always faithful to do the things I set out to do in the new year. When it comes to my faithfulness I am always falling short. God is not like that. His faithfulness is never wavering. We can trust and believe that God is working. Maybe we can’t see how He is working or if it will work out, but these verses give us this hope that God is faithful, even if we are not. Because of God’s tender love and faithfulness our response should be to wait and seek Him. Although this new year might mean we will face trouble or trials, we will not be out from under the hands of God. He is our salvation and He is good. No matter what bad news might be around the corner this year, we can rejoice in our faithful, merciful, and tender-loving God. May we allow Him to work this year in bringing us closer to Him! Even though the circumstances hadn’t changed but the author of Lamentations, still declared: “It is good that one should hope…” God’s tender love, mercy, and faithfulness is reason to hope. It isn’t up to us and God will always come through. No matter the disappointments that have followed us into this new year, you and I can have hope. John Piper says,“biblical hope is a confident expectation and desire for something good in the future.” Let’s enter this new year with that kind of hope - based on God’s new mercies. Each day the sun rises, hang on to the hope that we can expect good in our future! Intersecting Faith & Life: As you consider how God’s faithfulness and mercy was a part of your life in the past year, reflect on these questions as they relate to the coming new year. In what ways did God show you His tender love in 2024? How did God reveal His faithfulness to you in 2024? What answer to prayers did you receive in 2024? What prayer(s) are you praying for 2025? Pastor John Ryan Cantu brings this week's message, “Full Transparency." Key Verse: 2 Kings 4:8-28 ESV “One day Elisha went on to Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to eat some food. So whenever he passed that way, he would turn in there to eat food. And she said to her husband, “Behold now, I know that this is a holy man of God who is continually passing our way. Let us make a small room on the roof with walls and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that whenever he comes to us, he can go in there.” One day he came there, and he turned into the chamber and rested there. And he said to Gehazi his servant, “Call this Shunammite.” When he had called her, she stood before him. And he said to him, “Say now to her, ‘See, you have taken all this trouble for us; what is to be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?'” She answered, “I dwell among my own people.” And he said, “What then is to be done for her?” Gehazi answered, “Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.” He said, “Call her.” And when he had called her, she stood in the doorway. And he said, “At this season, about this time next year, you shall embrace a son.” And she said, “No, my Lord, O man of God; do not lie to your servant.” But the woman conceived, and she bore a son about that time the following spring, as Elisha had said to her. When the child had grown, he went out one day to his father among the reapers. And he said to his father, “Oh, my head, my head!” The father said to his servant, “Carry him to his mother.” And when he had lifted him and brought him to his mother, the child sat on her lap till noon, and then he died. And she went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God and shut the door behind him and went out. Then she called to her husband and said, “Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, that I may quickly go to the man of God and come back again.” And he said, “Why will you go to him today? It is neither new moon nor Sabbath.” She said, “All is well.” Then she saddled the donkey, and she said to her servant, “Urge the animal on; do not slacken the pace for me unless I tell you.” So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her coming, he said to Gehazi his servant, “Look, there is the Shunammite. Run at once to meet her and say to her, ‘Is all well with you? Is all well with your husband? Is all well with the child?'” And she answered, “All is well.” And when she came to the mountain to the man of God, she caught hold of his feet. And Gehazi came to push her away. But the man of God said, “Leave her alone, for she is in bitter distress, and the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me.” Then she said, “Did I ask my Lord for a son? Did I not say, ‘Do not deceive me?'”” Sermon Topics: Motherhood, Strength, Faith Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro 00:30 - Welcome 03:35 - 2 Kings 4:8-28 07:10 - Full Transparency

n Sunday, August 6, 2023, VLC gathered in person, which was also broadcasted online via YouTube. Pastor Stuart Nice shared a message about Jesus' experience while having dinner at a Pharisee's house, when a woman honored him by anointing and washing his feet, which was seen as an act of worship. In this message, we explored what it means to worship, the issues of misjudging, and the price of peace. Luke 7:36-38, 50 (ESV) One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment.…And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”https://bit.ly/Luke7_36-38_50ESV
What is your net worth? "For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?" Luke 9:25 ESV One of the recurring questions I experience in life is what would happen if I gave more of my stuff to help others. I use the phrase "my stuff" because I grew up in the days of George Carlin. Our "stuff" is a reference to our possessions, our riches, our things. I wonder what would have happened if I had given more of it away. Jesus is in this series of statements that we've been discussing for a few days now. We live in a world where we know that one day, our money will be worthless. I heard someone once describe it as owning the currency of a government that was about to be overthrown. We know the end is coming. So why would we hold on to the money? Why wouldn't we take all of the old money and purchase things that would have a value in the new economy. This is exactly what Jesus is questioning here. What good is it if we accumulate a bunch of wealth today that will be worthless tomorrow? How silly would we feel? Many of us work our whole lives to save up money and have a lot of stuff. Then we die and it all goes to someone else. If we do this in the extreme, we forfeit ourselves, according to Jesus. We have another Marketplace Mission Trip coming up in just a few days. This is a 2-week exercise to practice following Jesus rather than forfeiting ourselves. Check it out and request an invitation at www.MarketplaceMissionTrip.com.

Disciple Up # 285 Stewardship Part Nine: Use of Finances By Louie Marsh, 11-23-2022 Introduction: Where we've been and where we're probably going! 9 Biblical Financial Principles 1) God is My Source The first principle is that God is the source of everything. “19And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19, ESV) “8And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:8, ESV) 2) Giving Is Essential “38give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”” (Luke 6:38, ESV) “23And before the Lord your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always.” (Deuteronomy 14:23, ESV) One purpose of tithing was to teach the people of Israel to put God first in their lives. 3) Saving Is Critical The third financial principle concerns saving money-setting something aside for a rainy day. “20Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man's dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.” (Proverbs 21:20, ESV) 4) Keep Out of Debt The fourth principle is to keep out of unnecessary debt and thus avoid the debt trap. “21The wicked borrows but does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives;” (Psalm 37:21, ESV) Borrowing for a house or car is one thing but taking on financial obligations one can't keep-buying beyond the ability to pay-is another. “7The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7, ESV) 5) Be Content with what you have The 5th principle is being content with what one has. “5Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”” (Hebrews 13:5, ESV) “11Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.” (Philippians 4:11, ESV) “10as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, yet possessing everything.” (2 Corinthians 6:10, ESV) 6) Have a Budget The 6th principle is that of keeping records and making a budget. “23Buy truth, and do not sell it; buy wisdom, instruction, and understanding.” (Proverbs 23:23, ESV) “3By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; 4by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches.” (Proverbs 24:3–4, ESV) 7) Don't Cosign The 7th principle is, don't cosign. “1My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger, 2if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, 3then do this, my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your neighbor: go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor. 4Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber; 5save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter, like a bird from the hand of the fowler.” (Proverbs 6:1–5, ESV) 8) Work Hard The eighth principle is that of hard work. “23In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.” (Proverbs 14:23, ESV) “19Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty.” (Proverbs 28:19, ESV) 9) Seek Godly Counsel The last principle is that of seeking godly counsel. “1Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;” (Psalm 1:1, ESV) “22Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22, ESV) 6) How this works in my church/ministry Use of funds Churches & ministries must be as open and transparent as possible about their finances. The only thing we keep private is who gave how much. Otherwise our books are open, staff salaries are open, and each month we report on our finances publicly. Support of those in the ministry - time, finances, marriage support, etc. “3I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, 4always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, 5because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now. 6And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:3–6, ESV) Staying focused on ministry's purpose “25of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, 26the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. 27To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. 28Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.” (Colossians 1:25–29, ESV) Balance my time for ministry & rest, etc. “1Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.” (Psalm 127:1–2, ESV) “19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20, ESV)

Life Under the Sun, Pt. 10 Steps to Christlikeness By Louie Marsh, 10-30-2022 Drop Kick Me Jesus (Through The Goal Posts Of Life.) Written by Paul Charles Craft I Don't Care if it Rains or Freezes 'Long as I Have My Plastic Jesus Sittin' on the Dashboard of my Car a.k.a. "Plastic Jesus" by Ernie Marrs I've Been Roped And Throwed By Jesus In The Holy Ghost Corral. I Went Back to My Fourth Wife for the Third Time and Gave Her a Second Chance to Make a First Class Fool Out of Me by Rev. Billy C. Wirtz Hand me the Pool Cue and Call Yourself an Ambulance (- it's not real) Things aren't always what they seem. The same is true of us. A story from American Indian folk lore – a brave one day found an eagle's egg had fallen out of its nest, since he couldn't reach the nest he decided to put the egg in the next of a prairie chicken. After a while the eagle hatched and was raised by the mother prairie chicken to be one of her brood. The eagle lived his life thinking and acting just like a prairie chicken, not knowing anything else. He scratched in the dirt for insects to eat, he clucked and cackled, and flew no more than a few feet in a hurried thrashing of wings, just like all the other prairie chickens did. Then one day he looked up and saw an eagle soaring high above. It was magnificent as it soared on the thermals through the cloudless sky. The young eagle asked his mother what is that bird that looks so wonderful? That's a eagle, chief of the birds, she said, but don't give it a second thought, you could never be like him.” So the eagle lived out his life as a chicken, never knowing the greatness he had been born too. Christians are very often just like that! Made to soar into the heaven's with our Father, we scratch in the dirt, accepting a ho-hum life of mediocrity when God wants us to be world changers! 1) Always PURSUE GOD in my heart. “2A wise man's heart inclines him to the right, but a fool's heart to the left.” (Ecclesiastes 10:2, ESV) One commentator suggested this should be the slogan of the Republican party – NOT!! Actually right refers to the place of God's pleasure. “Christianity is a religion of the heart.” - DLMoody “30And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' (Mark 12:30, ESV) Jesus told us to love God with all our hearts- making our faith a thing of the heart and not just the head. Example: IN his Sunday sermon a preacher's subject was “Forgive your enemies.” After the sermon he asked how many present we willing to forgive – about half held up their hands. No satisfied he harangued the congregation for another 20 minutes and repeated the question. About 80% raised their hands, so he lectured them for another 15 minutes and then repeated the question. All but one elderly man raised his hand. “My Jones,” the preacher asked, “are you not willing to forgive your enemies?” “I don't have any,” he said. “Mr, Jones, that is very unusual, how old are you?” 86 he said “Would you please come down in front and tell the congregation how a man can live to be 86 and not have an enemy in the world?” The old man shuffled to the front, turned to the congregation and with smile he said, “I outlived every last one of ‘em!” Cute story – but it misses the point – it's a great example of surface level, Pharisee type Christianity not heart deep Christianity. 2) Remember: There's no such thing as a SAFE SIN! “1Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off a stench; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor.” (Ecclesiastes 10:1, ESV) Seemingly little things can destroy your life and spoil your reputation. A few flies can destroy a wonderful perfume. A few moments of folly can ruin or severely damage your life. Illustrations: Nixon and Watergate, Clinton and Monica. 3) When opposed STAND FIRM & REMAIN CALM. “4If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for calmness will lay great offenses to rest.” (Ecclesiastes 10:4, ESV) It's in the nature of a chicken to quit and run away when the going gets tough. But if we are to be eagles then we'll be firm in our convictions – and calm and loving at the same time. Don't yell and scream – you'll get much more respect if you remain calm and speak as calmly as possible about whatever the issue is. People don't respect quitters, yellers etc. They DO respect people who stand by their beliefs and don't run people who disagree. 4) Risk is good – but I must think STRATEGICALLY! “8He who digs a pit will fall into it, and a serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall.” (Ecclesiastes 10:8, ESV) 5) SKILL succeeds where strength fails. “10If the axe is dull and he does not sharpen its edge, then he must exert more strength. Wisdom has the advantage of giving success.” (Ecclesiastes 10:10, NASB95) 6) My speech should be KIND & THOUGHTFUL. “12The words of a wise man's mouth win him favor, but the lips of a fool consume him.” (Ecclesiastes 10:12, ESV) 7) TRUST GOD – only He knows the future. “14A fool multiplies words, though no man knows what is to be, and who can tell him what will be after him?” (Ecclesiastes 10:14, ESV)

# Introduction John Bunyan's autobiography is a brutal read. He called it _Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners_, or _Grace Abounding_ for short. He knew he was a sinner but grace is the thing he just couldn't seem to get a grasp on for page after page in his testimony. Bunyan kept getting close to comfort for his soul in Christ, close to knowing the peace of God through justification by faith, yet he struggled for years until sovereign grace brought him home. The second half of Romans 5 is like drowning, but more fruitful for our faith. Here is where anxiety in the soul goes to die. This is buoy of comfort in a tidal wave of soul worry. If it seems too good to be true, it at least reiterates that the good isn't up to you. It never has been. There is a statement Paul makes in verse 20 that is so joy-good that it will take two more chapters to deal with the abuses some men make of it. Do you have sin? Is it great, grievous sin? Do you see your guilt before God? However awful it is, grace is *more*. The point of this section in the letter is to secure our rejoicing. We rejoice, thrice, in verses 1-11. God's glory, when it is revealed in fulness, will vindicate all we ever hoped for, the kind of hope that others others mocked us for. Our trials will be proven to have made us better. So God Himself is the lifter of our heads. The basis is not in us. The basis is love, and Christ sacrificed Himself for us while we were still sinners. Since verse 12 Paul has been showing that all we've gained in Christ is much more than we lost in Adam, which is actually a big loss. We deserve condemnation because of what we've done, but we already deserved condemnation because Adam represented us and he failed. All of humanity has been under the reign of death since, and while ours is a ruined nature, it pales in comparison to the reign of righteousness and life through Jesus Christ our Lord. > rise, the woman's conquering Seed, > bruise in us the serpent's head. > Adam's likeness, Lord, efface; > stamp thine image in its place. > Second Adam from above, > Reinstate us in thy love. > (—Charles Wesley, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”) In Christ God is redeeming a new race of men who will live forever, and it is through grace abounding. # Many Made Righteous (verses 18-19) These verses offer two parallel summaries (“So then” or “consequently”) of the relationship between Adam and Jesus. > Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. For as by the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous. (Romans 5:18–19 ESV) It's possible to understand the “one(s)” as the one act of each or the one person committing each act. It amounts to the same. One man committed one trespass. Adam disobeyed in the Garden of Eden (see verses 12, 14). The results of that can be described as 1) it **led to condemnation for all men** and 2) by it **the many were made sinners**. This reiterates what he wrote in verse 12. God counted Adam's disobedience as disobedience of us all. Prior to and without regard for any inevitable individual disobedience, Adam's guilt is *imputed* to us, to every human born of man. This is a bad predicament, but a God-given precedent. God gave another representative in whom we can be counted righteous. A different one act by one man: **one act of righteousness** which must be a summary of sacrifice, and **one man's obedience** leads to justification and many being made righteous. One brought death, this One brings life. > For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. (1 Corinthians 15:22, ESV) This is not a doctrine of Universalism, as if everyone will be saved. Every one whom Adam represented is condemned, and every one who Christ represents will be saved. Who are Adam's? The born. Who are Christ's? The believers only. These are the only two worlds, and only those represented by Christ have true life. # Much More Grace (verses 20-21) While it is true that every man is guilty even before his own sins, his sins and guilt are useful to 1) point him outside of himself for help and 2) give him reason to rejoice and praise God's grace. > Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:20–21, ESV) One sentence with three movements. First, *Law's* job was to point out sin, and make it so that no one can claim any excuse. Paul already said as much (Romans 3:19-20, also in Galatians 3:23-24). Since imputation is the point, why even bring this up? It's at least because God revealed more than that men were guilty in Adam. Is that reality even recognizable in the OT? The law, especially as revealed in the Law of Moses, was given as a tool to show the symptoms of their corrupted nature. All men *need* a new heart. They need to be made new creatures. They need forgiveness, but also to be reconciled and renewed. They are not obedient because they were born in sin. The law is like a mirror. Otherwise they might not see. While it is true that the law may have some effect of restraining sin, that's not what Paul described her. The law, as light, reveals more and more the violations of the standards. Second, *Sin* is always second. The law **increased** sin, but **where sin increased, graced abounded all the more**. **Abounded all the more** or “multiplied even more” (HCSB);” where aboundaunce of synne was/ther was more plēteousnes of grace” (Tyndale). Grace is a five-gallon bucket of water for a cardboard match; it is the Pacific Ocean for a box of matches. Grace is lavishly supplied. Grace scales, not just keeping pace to keep it covered, but in multiples of the sin. That's abounding grace. No matter what you have done you have not out-sinned grace. Adam represented the whole of mankind, and *that* sin brought death to every man, and still it wasn't greater than Christ's obedience and love and sacrifice. There is no manipulation left for religious people here. It's why Christianity through her Protestant preaching declares something different from all the other systems which expect our works. If being right depended on you, there could never be more than a moment's peace, or else it would be a false peace, a peace of delusion. Grace changes that relationship from fear and threat. Third, *Grace* has no end. Grace for forgiveness, grace for now and forever. In verse 17 two reigns are compared, two dispensations: death and life. A dispensation here is (not related to eschatology but) a system of order, a way things are organized, the rules of administration. Death reigned and believers reign in life by free gift. Here the dispensations are named again, not by sequence of chronology but by power of authority. Sin reigned in death. The ugly trifecta: law, sin, and death. Sin's administration is one of a bully-tyrant who separates and destroys. Much more is grace, righteousness, and eternal life. Grace is more than a lenient attitude or blind eye, it is an effective, declaring and then transforming energy. It transfers all those believing ones from the kingdom of death into the kingdom of God's beloved Son (see also Colossians 1:13), and turns them from slaves to kings, or as we'll see in chapter 6, from slaves to sin to slaves of righteousness (Romans 6:18). They will now forever be serving righteousness and seeing the fruit of life. Such grace is so great that is gets abused (see chapters 6-7). # Conclusion Romans 5 teaches that Adam is a type of Christ (verse 14). Adam disobeyed, Christ obeyed. When Adam sinned, there isn't any indication that he knew that he was the representative of humanity. But he did know that *he was responsible for Eve*. Eve was deceived, and, on the timeline, Eve sinned first (Genesis 3:6). Eve's sin was punished (Genesis 3:16), but Adam was held responsible. Adam disobeyed God's Word and ate from the forbidden tree, and *his* sin brought death to the world, not hers. His test was not just at the tree, it was what to do with a *sinner*. He joined her. Christ was given a Bride by His Father, and He took responsibility for her. He died while we were still sinners. He showed His love not by joining in our sin, but by giving Himself in place of us who deserved death for our sin. His obedience was perfect and so was His sacrifice. Adam neither obeyed or offered himself instead of Eve. He blamed her (Genesis 3:12). In effect he said, “Take her instead of me.” Jesus said, “Take Me instead of them.” > Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. (1 Corinthians 15:49, ESV) Sin is less than grace. Death is less than grace. Grace abounds unto a reign of grace and a reign of joy. ---------- ## Charge You cannot out-sin God's grace. By His grace you won't try to. There is an adversary, a prosecuting accuser who will try to devour your faith and joy. Resist him, and resist biting and devouring one another (Galatians 5:15). ## Benediction: > Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 5:8–11, ESV)
Life takes a lot of unexpected twists and turns. Sometimes it feels like we are always wandering from on disruptive event to another. It is hard at times to see how God is working and moving when things are uncomfortable and not ideal. In the middle of it all we all yearn for something more. A promised land maybe. A simple life. Sometimes we meet God in the wilderness and it changes us, makes us better. More faithful. This was what happened to Moses. Nothing for him seemed easy but God was present through it all. Exodus: 2:11-15; 3:1-15 (ESV)One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?” He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.” When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well. Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.Then the Lord said, “I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters. I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And now, behold, the cry of the people of Israel has come to me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. Come, I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, ‘What is his name?' what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.'” God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.Luke 13:1-9 (ESV)There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? No, I tell you; but

Jew vs Gentile ------------------ Ephesians 2:11-22 (ESV) One in Christ 11 Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— 12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility 15 by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace, 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility. 17 And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. ------------------ 5 Core Values of SWAT 1. Lee and her husband, Mike, have four great kids and live at a Christian Camp in West Michigan. Scripture: Scripture on Tamar found in Genesis 38 Scripture on Rahab found in Joshua 2 and 6 Genesis 38:26a (NLT) Judah recognized them immediately and said, “She is more righteous than I am, because I didn’t arrange for her to marry my son Shelah.” Joshua 2:8-14 (ESV) Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” Psalm 78:35 (NKJV) Then they remembered that God was their rock, that God Most High was their redeemer. Isaiah 43:1 (NIV) Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. Isaiah 61:3 (NKJV) To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.” Luke 7:36-50 (ESV) One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at table with him began to say among[a] themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” John 8:36 (NIV) So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 1 John 1:9 (NIV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. #0009 (Luke 10:38-42 - pt.4) – There's one thing we must learn to prioritize above all else. If we don't, our spiritual growth and passion for Jesus begin to wane significantly. But when we do, we begin to experience new levels of closeness to God, victory over sin, clarity of purpose, and effectiveness in our work. You can find show notes for this podcast episode at http://tekoa.media/0009Scripture from this episode:Luke 10:38-42 ESV – 38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.””Psalm 27:4 ESV – One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.Luke 18:22 ESV – 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Philippians 3:13-14 ESV – 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. If this podcast has challenged and encouraged you, be sure to subscribe so you never miss an episode! If you would like to receive our weekly newsletter featuring our best content and updates, you can subscribe for free here. This podcast is a ministry of Mike Lawrence and The Tekoa Project. And he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, - Ephesians 2:17-19(ESV) One of the things that I love about traveling is experiencing different cultures. When we are put into a situation where things are unfamiliar we are forced to look at the world in different and new ways. All of us in the last couple weeks have been forced into a new culture...whether we like it or not. Now we are forced to think about things differently. Everything from our interactions to our purchases to our travel has changed. What will continue to be affected is the church. With the current health restrictions in place we can't meet as we once did, but that doesn't make us less the church. This circumstance presents us with an excellent opportunity to think about what the church is and what her mission is. So I'm going to lean into this idea for a few weeks by starting a brief series entitled: 'The Church: More than. . .'
Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the churches of Christ greet you. - Romans 16:16 (ESV) One of the traditions of Hope during our gathered worship is to have scripture read by an individual from the congregation. (BTW: If you would like to read I'm always looking for folks.) It's great to hear God's Word together. One consistent question I've heard when I ask is, 'Does this passage have any weird names or places in it? And if so, can you help me figure out how to pronounce them?' That's one of the reasons we won't have anyone read the passage we are going to look at this week. It is filled with names. It's a passage we might easily skip or skim when we are reading. This passage has for us some encouragement as we consider it together. Paul is closing his letter and he has a few commendations and encouragements and hellos to pass along. In the midst of this the verses have something to say to us about God's church and our part in it. Take a few minutes to read through Romans 16 as we prepare to dive into this chapter this week. Also, we will have the chance to celebrate the Lord's Table together. This is always an important reminder for us to hope in the gospel and Christ's work in it.
Pastor Willie Skinner 1. Compromise is often the result of fulfilling legitimate desires in illegitimate ways. 2. Compromise always has consequences. 3. The Cross has the final word on your Compromise. 4. Compromise doesn’t have to be the end of your story it can be the beginning of a new one. Colossians 2:13-14 (ESV) And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 2 Corinthians 5:21 (ESV) For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Exodus 2:11-15 (ESV) One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.
Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. - Romans 14:13 (ESV) One of the persistent problems in church is self-righteousness. We easily recognize that in the New Testament. The Pharisees are the easily despised villains of the gospels. They go around spending time looking religious and looking down on those that don't, but they are driven by position, power, and pride. We would like to think we have nothing in common with them. In all honesty, the longer we are in church the easier it seems to look down on newbies. We measure holiness not by God's standard but our own achievements. The 'bad' sins are the ones we don't struggle with, at least openly. So when it comes to the grey areas or the places that people differ, this attitude often reveals itself. We are the the enlightened ones. We are the 'good Christians'. Paul calls us to think differently. One thing is to dominate our thinking and actions toward those around us. I want to encourage you to read through Romans 14 and see if you can discover that one thing.
Scripture: Acts 8:34–38 (ESV) And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.Baptism is a significant and sacred act that has power for a believer that has too often been reduced to an optional ceremony that some believers participate in! Not in this house!Phillip:one of the first disciples, immediately inviting others to follow - John 1:43–46 preached, signs, wonders, impacted a city (Samaria) – Acts 8:6–8 (ESV) And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was much joy in that city. tuned into heaven’s voice - Acts 8:26–29 (ESV) Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Rise and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” This is a desert place. And he rose and went. And there was an Ethiopian, a eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship and was returning, seated in his chariot, and he was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and join this chariot.” Acts 8:30–33 (ESV) So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth. In his humiliation justice was denied him. Who can describe his generation? For his life is taken away from the earth.” Acts 8:34–38 (ESV) And the eunuch said to Philip, “About whom, I ask you, does the prophet say this, about himself or about someone else?” Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.BAPTISM defines our formal starting point with Jesus.possession without contract… lots of grey areas!salvation is a covenantal act – an agreement with Godbaptism is the public signing of our agreement with Himeveryone has a different process of being drawn into a relationship with Jesus, but everyone should have the same process of formalizing the relationship with Jesus - Mark 16:15–16 (ESV) And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Examples of People Formalizing Their Relationship:Day of Pentecost - Acts 2:41 (ESV) So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. Saul, Paul - Acts 9:17–18 (ESV) So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized; Peter & Gentiles - Acts 10:47–48 (ESV) “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days. Paul and Lydia - Acts 16:14–15 (ESV) One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul. And after she was baptized, and her household as well, she urged us, saying, “If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay.” And she prevailed upon us. Paul & Silas, singing in prison - Acts 16:33 (ESV) And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Crispus - Acts 18:8 (ESV) Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed in the Lord, together with his entire household. And many of the Corinthians hearing Paul believed and were baptized. Ephesus - Acts 19:5 (ESV) On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. BAPTISM is a powerful prophetic declaration that impacts your future.declaration – what we say sets the toneprophetic – agreement with what heaven says, pulling heaven to earththe symbolism: His death, His resurrectionthe symbolism: Your past, Your future! 2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV) Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. BAPTISM is an act of obedience that unlocks next things.formalizing your commitment to God, unlocks next things, like buying a house, purchasing a car, getting marriedJesus Baptism - Luke 3:21–22 (ESV) Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Obedience Leads To Blessing: Deuteronomy 28:1–3 (ESV) “And if you faithfully obey the voice of the Lord your God, being careful to do all his commandments that I command you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God. Blessed shall you be in the city, and blessed shall you be in the field. Disobedience Leaves You Less Than What God Intends (cursed: slight, unimportant, insignificant, trivial, minor) - Deuteronomy 28:15–16 (ESV) “But if you will not obey the voice of the Lord your God or be careful to do all his commandments and his statutes that I command you today, then all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you. Cursed shall you be in the city, and cursed shall you be in the field. Follow Jesus & Get Baptized!
Tithing Is Wise Because It… 1. Honors the Lord Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. Proverbs 3:9-10 (ESV) One tenth of the produce of the land, whether grain from the […]
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 ESV One of the easiest things to do is settle, but the amazing thing is we have a hope in Jesus that we will get all that we desire if we are faithful to Him first. See Jesus knows us so well and He has a person fit for us, so why do we settle? In most cases, it’s because we don’t want to be alone, or we don’t see ourselves and value ourselves the way that God does. Take a step back and reevaluate your relationships, why did they end? Do you see a pattern? Do you know yourself? Do you love yourself, can you see yourself with you? Grab a journal, write down these questions and think about them this week, be sure to meditate on Jeremiah 29:11 and remember that God’s plans for us are greater than anything we could imagine. So seek first His kingdom and live righteously so that you may have the things you desire, I pray that God brings intentional people in your life, and that you start to see what He sees in you! I pray that you are free from unequally yoked relationships and I come up against and toxic friendships, relationships and soul ties, I command them to be broken in Jesus name. Amen! It is my hope that this podcast encourages you you place your value in God and discover the purpose and plan He has for you! For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. - Romans 8:18–19 (ESV) One of the biggest obstacles for many when considering Christianity is the pain and suffering that we see around us. Globally we see and read about famines, wars, or worse. But most of us identify with this painful world in much more personal ways. Our lives seem like a trail of suffering and pain punctuated with only brief, fleeting moments of joy. So when Christians describe God as good and filled with love for us, I can understand the discontinuity this presents. This week Paul addresses not only our personal distress but the global pain. And in fact, in one aspect he points to God as the cause of this futility. But it is meaningless. Take a few minutes to read through Romans 8. Slow down and focus on the last half (Romans 8:18-39). And join us this Sunday as we unpack it.
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. - Romans 6:16–18 (ESV) One of Martin Luther's most notable quotes is 'Love God and sin boldly.' This has been used from several corners to accuse him of blatant disregard for God's commands. After all he was a nun-marrying, nail-driving monk with a mallet. When you hear someone talk about God's overwhelming grace, how do you respond? Do you hope that there is some balance given to our obligation? If it doesn't come do you feel a need to fill it in? This week we will continue studying the relationship of God's saving work and our obedience. Last week we learned the vital role that our union with Christ plays. This week we look at a similar question from a different vantage point. If we talk about grace too much, won't it unleash people to sin? Read through Romans 6:15-23 to see Paul's answer.
“...for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”2 Timothy 1:7 ESVOne of my favorite stories in the Bible is that of Paul and Timothy. It’s such a beautiful example of how we are to think about the Kingdom of God. Our standing before the Almighty isn’t based on whether we are Jew or Gentile or neither - but upon the grace and mercy of our loving Father. Let’s talk about it!

Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. - Luke 10:30 (ESV) One thing that amazes me about Jesus is his ability to see through all the smoke screens that people would put up especially religious people. Religious folk, like us, are great at using our faith as a shield to avoid love and action. The parable of the Good Samaritan is a great example of that kind of deflection. This week we have the privilege to have John Gerhardt with us. John is the director of Urban Impact ministry in NOLA. We have supported and ministered alongside John and the team there for many years. He will be opening up the word to this parable and he will be jumping in with the worship team. It should be a great morning!
“Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.”1 Timothy 4:12 ESVOne of my favorite stories in the Bible is of a young boy who doesn’t fit within any community; an outcast who lived every day in shame; being loved and honored by a man who had everything to lose for loving him. And that boy becoming the pastor of one of the most famous churches in world history. Let’s talk about it!Twitter: @BiblePodcast365

Jesus said, "I am the vine, you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing". (John 15:5 ESV) One of the keys to understanding what it means to being a disciple...
I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to stir you up by way of reminder -- 2 Peter 1:13 (ESV) One of my fears is succumbing to dementia. With a history of it in my family, there is a real possibility of it happening to me. And having recently seen the effects of it first hand, I can attest that it is a living death. At some point, however, the sufferer is spared by no longer understanding what is happening. But I also think there is an amnesia that is a greater danger - Gospel Amnesia. When we fail to keep in view what has been done for us in Christ, we stand in a risky, dangerous spot. When the grace of God seems regular and normal, we will venture into apathy or self-righteousness. Peter wanted to point his readers back to the basics. He calls them to remember. He calls them to return. And he wants to rehearse all of this. These restatements of the gospel are essential not only to our understanding or conversion, but to our continued growth in maturity and Christian living. As we continue to look at 2 Peter, I want to encourage you to read through that first chapter.
REFLECTION QUOTES “Whosoever, then, would live a life of persevering holiness, let him keep his eye fixed on the Savior.” ~Robert Murray M'Cheyne (1813-1843), Scottish minister “The weaker we feel, the harder we lean. And the harder we lean, the stronger we grow spiritually, even while our bodies waste away.” ~J.I. Packer, British-born, Canadian theologian “The greatest test of whether the holiness we profess to seek or to attain is truth and life will be whether it produces an increasing humility in us. In man, humility is the one thing needed to allow God's holiness to dwell in him and shine through him. The chief mark of counterfeit holiness is lack of humility. The holiest will be the humblest.” ~Andrew Murray (1828-1917), African-born Christian minister “…but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.'” ~1 Peter 1:15-16 (ESV) “One of the consequences of sin is that it makes the sinner pity himself instead of causing him to turn to God. One of the first signs of new life is that the individual takes sides with God against himself.” ~Donald Grey Barnhouse (1895-1960), pastor and theologian SERMON PASSAGE Acts 5:1-11 (ESV) 1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property, 2 and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land? 4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to man but to God.” 5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it. 6 The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him. 7 After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened. 8 And Peter said to her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” And she said, “Yes, for so much.” 9 But Peter said to her, “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.” 10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.
2/12/17 - Luke 7:36-39 (ESV) "One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.”
