When I (Joanna) was in middle school, I can remember having a love of learning, I enjoyed being outdoors and moving through childhood content with who I was. It wasn't until I moved to a new school and got my hands on my first Seventeen Magazine that it seemed like I was overwhelmed with feelings of not being enough. I felt like I wasn't pretty enough, popular enough, or good enough to be wanted and loved for who I was.I think most girls could tell you the moment when comparison drove insecurity deep into their spirit. As we parent our daughters, we want to be aware of how comparison is destructive to their mind, their body, and their souls as they grow.We are so excited to have Shannon Popkin and Lee Nienhuis, authors of Comparison Girl for Teens: Thriving Beyond Measure in a World That Compares, with us on the podcast for this episode. In this episode, Shannon & Lee share with us:What it means to be a “comparison girl”Some comparison cues to look out for as you interact with your daughterThe importance of biblical literacy when it comes to issues of self-worthAnd much more!We hope you find encouragement and hope in this episode!Show Notes: growinghometogether.com/popkin-nienhuis-96

I was so excited to get to interview Lee Nienhuis and she did not disappoint! I felt like we were kindred spirits. Lee has written two books, Brave Mom, Brave Kids and her most recent book is Counter Cultural Parenting. She has a passion to encourage moms to be brave in praying for their kids to be warriors for Christ, even when you know that means a warrior must fight battles. She talks about how she realized that one day while she was praying and shares how she was able to overcome that fear and become a brave mom. Lee knows that Satan can use our fear as a weapon against us. He wants nothing more than for us to live in fear and complacency because that will never lead to being effective for Christ. I know this episode with Lee will inspire you to become the brave mom God has called you to be, as well as who your kids need you to be.
4 Reasons to Volunteer It's National Volunteer Week, and we're celebrating by highlighting one of our favorite ways to get our hearts closer to Jesus — volunteering! In this fun episode, Kori and Lee chat about four main reasons why we should slow down and take the time to serve others. We truly believe that Jesus came to serve, and we can't be like Jesus unless we serve others. Our hope is that you feel encouraged to find a need in your community and take action! Have you ever watched someone betray Jesus? Have you felt the pain and shock of watching someone among you—someone who seemed to be a follower of God—turn against Him? Lee Nienhuis was ready to send her daughter to public school. Scripture: Scripture on Tamar found in Genesis 38 Scripture on Rahab found in Joshua 2 and 6 Genesis 38:26a (NLT) Judah recognized them immediately and said, “She is more righteous than I am, because I didn’t arrange for her to marry my son Shelah.” Joshua 2:8-14 (ESV) Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.” Psalm 78:35 (NKJV) Then they remembered that God was their rock, that God Most High was their redeemer. Isaiah 43:1 (NIV) Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. Isaiah 61:3 (NKJV) To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.” Luke 7:36-50 (ESV) One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was reclining at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears and wiped them with the hair of her head and kissed his feet and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner.” And Jesus answering said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.” “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both. Now which of them will love him more?” Simon answered, “The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt.” And he said to him, “You have judged rightly.” Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven—for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little.” And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” Then those who were at table with him began to say among[a] themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” John 8:36 (NIV) So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. 1 John 1:9 (NIV) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
