Boston-based Marissa Nadler writes intimate, sweeping dreamy and eerie songs, that shimmer with gothic melancholy. On her 2018 record, For My Crimes, she enlisted accomplished musicians: harpist Mary Lattimore, drummer Patty Schemel (Hole), experimental multi-instrumentalist Janel Leppin, and Eva Gardner plays additional bass. Guest vocals came from Angel Olsen, Kristin Kontrol (Dum Dum Girls), and Sharon Van Etten, plus saxophonist Dana Colley (Morphine) was also a collaborator. These bittersweet and sharp slow burning tunes have a piercing intensity, driven home by Nadler's gripping voice. Marissa Nadler performs some of these songs in their stripped-down form, in-studio (from the Archives, 2018.) -Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. For My Crimes 2. Kim, who was in The Creation and The Birds with Ron Wood, is surprised when Johns hands the bass guitar to his 14-year-old daughter, Eva. Johns then goes to turn up the volume on The Kinks' classic “You Really Got Me” and proclaims, “Now this is a solid bass line!” Eva never looked back. Eva began performing with live bands in her hometown of Los Angeles at the age of 14. Deciding to further her musical studies, she attended the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts. Eva continued her studies at UCLA, graduating with honors (Cum Laude), and earning a degree in Ethnomusicology.Gardner's professional career began when she toured and recorded as the original bassist in The Mars Volta in 2001/2002. To make a big dream happen, you have to break it into small, individual steps and focus on the next first step. This way, you can make even the wildest, even most absurd, idea a success. This episode is a story about how my 13 year-old step son Ry and I co-created a song with the help of a celebrity music producer, without ever meeting him, and with almost zero musical abilities myself.  I just really wanted to make a song with Ry, and focused on the next first step.  Listen to the end to hear the song itself and a super inspiring Q&A with Ry at the end. Whatever your big, even absurd, dream is, you don't need to know exactly how you're going to achieve it. You just need to know three things: that it's a “yes,” what the next first step is, and who to ask for help. In this episode, you'll learn: How to break success down into small steps How I was able to co-write a song without any musical ability How I sourced my network for help How I ended up working with a celebrity music producer, who has worked with Cher, Tina Turner, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Joe Cocker & Disney How to get more people to say “yes” to your requests Why passion and persistence lead to success How to listen to your body    Quotables: “You don't need to know all the steps. You just need to know: is this a yes, am I excited, and what is the next first thing?”   Links mentioned in this episode: TYE 151: How To Overcome The Fear of Asking Questions (A Personal Story) TYE 128: P!nk bassist Eva Gardner on rock stardom and overcoming rejection TYE 005: A Rock Star's Guide to Overcoming Fear with Mark Schulman   Join The YES Effect Inner Circle Facebook Group for a behind the scenes experience about what it means to Believe, Belong and Become!   Join Shelli on Facebook Join Shelli on Instagram Join Shelli on YouTube

Eva Gardner could have easily been given a golden ticket to music stardom. But the fact that she wasn't drove her to go get it on her own. Eva grew up in a rock and roll family as the daughter of Kim Gardner, a notable bass player in the 1960's British Invasion music scene who played with acts like The Creation, Ron Wood, The Birds, Eric Clapton and Rod Stewart. But while Eva found great influence in her father's career path, she wasn't immediately encouraged to follow.   It wasn't until a holiday to visit a family friend, The Who's John Entwistle, where that all changed. Eva went on to study music at UCLA before beginning a career as a professional touring musician with acts like The Mars Volta, P!nk, Gwen Stefani, Cher, Tegan & Sara, Moby and Veruca Salt.   She's on The YES Effect Show to talk about her journey from growing up in a rock and roll household, making a name for herself as a bassist, to breaking norms as a female musician in the male-dominated music industry.  In this episode, you'll learn:   Why Eva's dad Kim initially didn't encourage her to pursue being a bass player How The Who bassist John Entwistle influenced Eva to start playing bass guitar What Eva learned after failing her music school audition, and what she did to improve Why you should surround yourself with people whose skills are are better than yours How the initial rejection from her dad inspired Eva to pursue a career as a musician How Eva got a job as P!nk's bassist Eva's most memorable moment playing on stage with P!nk The one thing everyone should do to find clarity on their path Quotables:   “It's those NOs that made me want to turn them into YESes  even more.”   “The path isn't always clear at first…until you take the first step.”   “When you're with people who are bettering you it really makes you step up.”   “Someone asked me ‘why do I do what I do?' Ultimately it's about connecting with other people.”    “I feel like if it was handed to me I probably wouldn't have wanted it. I probably would have taken it for granted.”  Links mentioned in this episode:   Eva Gardner's music: https://www.evagardner.com/    Eva on IG    Join The YES Effect Inner Circle Facebook Group for a behind the scenes experience about what it means to Believe, Belong and Become!   Join Shelli on Facebook Join Shelli on Instagram Join Shelli on YouTube

The 1990s marked the height of popularity for boy bands. In that decade, the pop charts were dominated by the likes of Take That, New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, Boyzone, Boyz II Men, Hanson, NSYNC, Five and Westlife. They paved the way for more recent chart-toppers like One Direction and BTS. But which of them was the best? On this poptastic podcast, we have an expert lineup debating that very question with host Sandro Monetti, himself a former columnist for much loved music magazine Smash Hits. Will Henshall was a founding member of the boy band Londonbeat, writing hits including ‘I've Been Thinking About You'. Eva Gardner is one of the world's leading guitarists, playing with Pink, Gwen Stefani and Cher. Michael Jay is a Grammy award-winning songwriter and producer whose songs have been recorded by everyone from Celine Dion to Eminem. Rising star Dyson is a singer-songwriter who has written songs on two number one albums recorded by the world's current biggest boy band, BTS. They all have opinions about who was the best 90s boy band, but the ultimate decision comes with the result of the public vote announced at the end of the show. Will your choice be the winner?

Eva shares valuable advice about her career playing for not only P!nk, but also other Pop superstars like Cher and Gwen Stefani.

Bill and Brian welcome legendary Big Star drummer Jody Stephens and acclaimed LA musician Luther Russell for a slightly different than usual episode. We had the pleasure to have the artists themselves provide a track by track commentary! Bill and Brian took the opportunity to head down to Memphis, spend time at Ardent Studios, and chat with Jody and Luther about the making of their album, the self titled debut from Those Pretty Wrongs (due out May 13th, 2016 from Ardent Music and Burger Records). Jody and Luther discuss the beginnings of the band, the cross continent writing process, recording at the historic Ardent using some of Chris Bell's guitars, their influences (such as Willis Alan Ramsey), and the positivity inherent throughout the album before we discuss the entire album, one song at a time. As we make our way through, we talk about how mean Eva Gardner could be (in film), Jody's dog's journey through some health issues, empty Chinese cities, arranging harmonies (that feature Danny De La Matyr!), a great story about a toy cube and sideshow freaks, the influence of Big Star's Alex Chilton and Chris Bell on the songwriting and their presence in the DNA of the music, remaining positive in the face of loss, and so so much more! Make sure to check out the album from Those Pretty Wrongs, due out May 13th from Ardent Music in partnership with Burger Records! www.thoseprettywrongs.com ardentmusic.11spot.com www.burgerrecords.org Many thanks to Addison Hare for making this happen!
