Our heroes this week encounter elements of the old west in the strangest places. First up is "The Case of the Cowboy Killers" - a true crime tale from Gang Busters that pits police against a gang of robbers who are quick on the draw (originally aired on ABC on August 28, 1948). Next, real-life gunplay keeps Sam Spade from enjoying a western dime novel in "The Betrayal in Bumpass Hell," (AFRS rebroadcast from January 16, 1949). Then George Valentine is hired by a big screen cowboy star and winds up in a murder case in "Every Shot Counts" from Let George Do It (originally aired on Mutual on October 31, 1949). And finally, Joel McCrea uses old fashioned methods and modern policework in Tales of the Texas Rangers. We'll hear him as Ranger Jayce Pearson in "The Hatchet" (originally aired on NBC on February 11, 1951).

We've all heard it: "Drive for show, putt for dough." But after speaking with Mark Broadie, the godfather of the game-changing Strokes Gained model, we're rethinking that position. Professor Broadie joins Tom Coyne live in the Broken Tee Society Discord server to unpack golf's ongoing data revolution, and why you're trying to shave strokes in all the wrong places.   Mark Broadie is the Carson Family Professor of Business at Columbia Business School. In the mid-2000s, he developed the Strokes Gained model by manually tracking and analyzing thousands of golf shots from amateurs at his club in Pelham, New York. After gaining access to the PGA Tour's shot-tracking data, Broadie refined his model, then released his seminal book Every Shot Counts in 2014. He now works on the USGA handicap research team, operates the GolfMetrics stat-tracking app, and advises a number of professional and amateur players.

Welcome to Golf Talk Live! Tune in LIVE Thursday at 6:00 PM Central This week's Coaches Corner Panel: Jon Decker & Bill Abrams. Later, my special guests: Dallas Webster & Ryan Hebert – V1 Game App Developers. More on Dallas & Ryan: Dallas Webster an avid golfer became frustrated a few years ago with inefficient practice and stalled improvement. With a growing family, time became less available to spend on the golf course to reach his golf goals. After reading Every Shot Counts by Mark Broadie, he began tracking advanced golf stats in an excel spreadsheet and started getting insights into his game that accelerated his progress. His best friend Ryan Hebert was just taking up the game and also working hard to improve. After a long phone call and brainstorming they partnered up to turn clumsy scorecard input and excel spreadsheets into an app for the amateurs that became PocketPAR. Ryan was able to carve out an 8 handicap including winning several tournaments on the Golf Channel Am Tour.  After 3 years of improving PocketPAR as a side gig, they partnered with V1 Sports to create what is now V1 Game. Join me LIVE Thursdays from 6:00 - 8:00PM Central http://www.blogtalkradio.com/golftalklive Or listen on these social media platforms:  iTunes , Stitcher, Tunein, Castbox, TalkStreamLive & Spotify.

In the 77th episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview Vice President and Managing Director of Parker Executive Search, and former professional golfer, Ryan Grant.   “Every shot counts.” Knowing that we so often fall short and that we can’t even hope to live up to our own sometimes impossible expectations, discouragement is an easy state to find ourselves in. But in recognizing this reality of being let down by ourselves and others, why not place our faith in something that will never discourage us, never lead us astray, and never let us down? Ryan Grant’s own journey through athletics and beyond is reflective of such faith. His trust in God’s plan for his life lead Ryan to the decision to walk away from the sport of golf at a rather surprising time, but Ryan was so resolute in his faith, that he felt complete peace in this chapter of his life ending and his moving forward into the next.   This is not to say the transition into “the real world” was easy, as he spent the past ten years “working on and thinking about [golf]”. But his faith did help him make it through that process, as he knew his identity was not rooted in his sport, but in something far greater.   By staying “relentlessly focused, relationally rich, results driven, and resilient” in every aspect of his life (just as was instilled within him as an athlete), Ryan was able to walk through every door open to him until he determined what to do next.   I am grateful for the chance to help tell his story, and I hope that you all enjoy my interview with Ryan Grant.   For more on Ryan, visit Parker Executive Search, and connect with Ryan on LinkedIn.   If you guys enjoy Keep Moving Forward and want to tell me so, I would love for you to leave me a review on iTunes. And if you really like my show and would like for me to give you a shout out at the beginning of my next episode, you can donate as little as $1 to my podcast and become a loyal patron at Patreon.   Always remember, you can beat the odds and go the distance, if only you keep moving forward.

Commonly known as the ‘Doctor of Golf’ Mark is at the forefront of a revolutionary new approach to the game. A professor at Columbia Business School, Mark helped the PGA Tour develop its cutting-edge strokes gained stat, and more recently worked with the PGA Tour on their implementation of strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained approach and strokes gained around the green. Broadie uses analytics from the financial world to uncover the secrets of the game of golf, with a focus on crunching mountains of data to show both professional and amateur golfers how to make better decisions on the course. Michael Covel speaks with Mark Broadie. Broadie is the Carson Family Professor of Business and Vice Dean at the Columbia Business School. His research focuses on quantitative finance and sports analytics. His golf research has appeared in academic journals and many golf publications. He developed the new strokes gained approach to analyze the performance of amateur and professional golfers and worked with the PGA Tour on their implementation of the strokes gained putting stat. His newest book is called Every Shot Counts. Covel says: We all know about Moneyball. It looks like Broadie has carved out that niche for himself in golf science. Covel isn’t a huge golf fan, but when it comes to sports and science and statistics, Covel sees the trend following parallels. Covel and Broadie discuss how he became, in Covel’s words, the “Bill James of golf”; how Broadie connected his finance work to the sport of golf; why certain golfers win; why approach shots are the most important; “drive for show, putt for dough”; how Broadie started, the software he used, and how he got better data; whether Broadie had any sense of where the data might go when he first collected it; power as a separator; the connection between sports anaylitics, business analytics, and investing; the psychology of golf; first putts vs. second putts; the world golf rankings, and how these can be fixed. My guest today is Mark Broadie, a Golf Statistician and Professor at Columbia Business School. I first found Mark through his book Every Shot Counts, which transformed golf statistics and analytics forever. Marcus worked with many of the world's best golfers, including Francesco Molinari, and Justin Rose, who became the world's number one golfer as a result of their work together. In this episode, we explore the nooks and crannies of golf statistics, we talked about how different kinds of grasses influence players, why approach shots play the biggest role in success for top golfers. We discussed the math behind the drive for show and putt for dough theory, and dive into the reasons why Tiger Woods was so dominant for so many years. Now I live for conversations like this. I love them. And spending an afternoon with Mark talking about strategy, statistics, and golf, the so called greatest game ever played is about as good as it gets for me. And we begin the conversation talking about the strokes gained measurement system which Mark invented, and which dispelled many of the myths and misconceptions about the game of Golf. I hope you enjoy this episode. SUBSCRIBE TO MY “MONDAY MUSINGS” NEWSLETTER TO KEEP UP WITH THE PODCAST.
