Title: The Failure to Launch (Hebrews 5:11–6:3)Summary:In this sermon, we explore a powerful warning and a powerful invitation: God expects spiritual growth — and He guarantees it for those who desire it. Using vivid imagery like Peter Pan Syndrome, spiritual milk vs solid food, and digging for diamonds in Scripture, we are called to pursue a faith that is not just wide but deep, discerning and anchored. Growth requires both grit and grace — but ultimately, God Himself carries us to maturity.Main Points:Do You Want to Grow? (Hebrews 5:11-14)How We Grow (Hebrews 6:1-3)Reflection Questions:Where have you seen "spiritual sluggishness" creep into your life? Are you actively growing — moving from milk to solid food — or staying stagnant? If someone asked you to explain the basics of Christianity, could you?How can you actively dig deeper into God's Word this week?Where do you need to trust God's grace to carry you toward maturity?Website & Location:

Alec, JJ and Mattson lean into an analysis of the film "Failure to Launch." Our primary contention revolves around the excessive emotional manipulation experienced by the protagonist, Tripp, a character portrayed by Matthew McConaughey, whose predicament elicits both humor and dismay. While we acknowledge the film's predictable narrative structure, we also appreciate its comedic elements and the ensemble cast's performances, particularly those of Sarah Jessica Parker and Bradley Cooper. Throughout our dialogue, we examine the dynamics of the characters and their interactions, noting the film's blend of absurdity and charm. Ultimately, we express a collective sentiment that despite its flaws, the movie provides an entertaining experience worthy of discourse within the romantic comedy genre.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us: hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

The Switch 2 was revealed a week ago and for a short time, a very short time, spirits were high. Since then, Nintendo has had to push back the pre-order date, take back the announced price, and do damage control on their planned variable pricing for games. The biggest culprit? Trade uncertainty as big ol' tariffs start hitting everywhere. But it turns out: the increased price was planned BEFORE tariffs came into the picture... So, where does that leave gamers?

Many young adults enter their post-high school years without the executive functioning skills needed to thrive. This is often because the people supporting them underestimate the amount of support they're getting, and there's no plan in place to fade that prompting. When young adults enter college, they have to manage sleep hygiene, long-term projects, and manage screen time. This is why I talk so much about using multiple service delivery models when supporting executive functioning; whether it be in the schools or in private practice; because many essential life skills cannot be taught without the right environmental scaffolding in place.  That's why I invited Michael McLeod from GrowNOW therapy to talk about why he uses a combination of direct sessions, summer camps with community-based activities, parent coaching, and educator training. Michael partnered and worked with The Focus Foundation in 2015, learning from incredible doctors, neuropsychologists, and various specialists – gaining in-depth training and experience with ADHD and Executive Function research and development. He currently specializes in ADHD, Executive Functioning, Social Executive Functioning, and Parent Coaching. From his experiences as an Executive Function Specialist, Michael developed a distinct model of Internal Skills Coaching to enhance these skills. Michael is a Keynote Speaker and has presented nationwide and internationally, training families and professionals on his unique GrowNOW Treatment Model for fostering Executive Functions & Resiliency. In this conversation, we discuss:✅Do graduate programs prepare clinicians to work on executive functioning out in the field?✅Frontloading vs. traditional social skills sessions.✅Why helping families set boundaries around screen time is an essential part of the services clinicians offer.✅Defining failure to launch and what it looks like in young adults.✅Situational awareness and its impact on safety for college students. You can connect with Michael at:GrowNOWADHD.com, here: http://grownowadhd.com/GrowNOW Instagram, here: http://instagram.com/GrowNOWADHDGrowNOW School Trainings, here: https://www.grownowadhd.com/training/ADHD Parenting Podcast, here: https://open.spotify.com/show/7xATyVhNZU3abIejNIggvDListen to my previous conversations with Michael here:EP 008: Building accountability and motivation in kids with ADHD (with Mike McLeod), here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-008-building-accountability-and-motivation-in-kids-with-adhd-with-mike-mcleod/EP 009: Time management and device use boundaries in kids with ADHD (with Mike McLeod), here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-009-time-management-and-device-use-boundaries-for-kids-with-adhd-with-mike-mcleod/The following previous episodes were mentioned in this episode:EP 122: Executive functioning for college students: Beyond checklists and planners (with Jill Fahy), here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-122-executive-functioning-for-college-students-beyond-checklists-and-planners-with-jill-fahy/EP 193: Using Distance Learning to Increase Access and Opportunity (with Seth Fleischauer), here: https://drkarendudekbrannan.com/ep-193-using-distance-learning-to-increase-access-and-opportunity-with-seth-fleischauer/In this episode, I mention the School of Clinical Leadership, my program that helps related service providers develop a strategic plan for putting executive functioning support in place in collaboration with their school teams. At its March 4th meeting, Portland Public School board will hear an update on the Center for Black Student Excellence (CBSE). The $60 million CBSE was included in the bond measure approved by voters in 2020, without any prior due diligence. None of the money has been spent. It hasn't been spent because no one at PPS can explain what the Center is supposed to be or how it will improve academic performance. Nor has the Board clarified how a center focusing solely on Black students complies with Title VI of the 1964 U.S. Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race.None of those problems are solved in the Power Point being distributed for tonight's meeting.  The handout is a 9-page word salad of phrases like “Pages of Possibility” and “Bridges to Brilliance.” It does propose reading campaigns, parent partnerships, and mentoring programs that could benefit students of all races, but those activities do not require a dedicated building. The Board will be asking voters in May to approve another construction bond in the amount of $1.8 billion. Before demanding more money, PPS should apologize for its failure with the CBSE, and ask voters for permission to reallocate the $60 million to actual construction needs within the District.

Imagine this: A bright, capable adult, full of potential, yet paralyzed by the invisible grip of OCD. They live at home, rely on their parents for everything, and seem unable to take the first step toward independence. The parents, heartbroken and exhausted, wonder, “Where did we go wrong? How do we help without hurting?” It's a delicate dance, a tightrope walk between support and enabling, between love and letting go.   In this compelling episode of The OCD Whisperer Podcast, host Kristina Orlova, LMFT, welcomes Natalia Aiza, LPC, co-founder of Kairos Wellness Collective, for an insightful discussion on the challenges of "failure to launch" among adults with OCD. Together, they explore the complexities of dependency, the role of parental accommodations, and actionable strategies to help individuals with OCD take meaningful steps toward autonomy. Natalia shares her expertise on fostering independence through gradual, supportive approaches while emphasizing the importance of real-world exposure, skill-building, and overcoming the mental barriers that OCD creates. This episode is a must-listen for parents, caregivers, and individuals navigating the journey toward self-reliance. In This Episode [00:00:02] Introduction to the episode [00:01:04] Understanding "failure to launch" [00:02:33] Dependency and OCD [00:04:03] Parental guidance for adult children [00:05:41] Research on dependency [00:07:12] Creating independence plans [00:08:53] Challenges of financial independence [00:09:56] Motivation and comfort zones [00:12:41] Gradual process of change [00:13:20] Long-term parenting goals [00:14:49] Overcoming anticipatory anxiety [00:16:29] Learning new skills [00:18:35] Real-world exposure through jobs [00:19:27] Understanding OCD's impact on progress [00:20:45] The importance of financial independence [00:21:34] Rethinking personal rationalizations [00:21:45] Taking action against OCD [00:22:14] How to connect with Natalia [00:22:54] Closing remarks Notable Quotes [00:03:23] "I have certainly encountered so many families over the years of just practicing and myself treating OCD patients, and a lot of times there is a lot of conversation from family and parents especially of like, what do I do? How do I help?" - Kristina Orlova [00:11:20] "My job is to prepare my children for when I die. If I'm not preparing my children to live on and thrive when I am no longer here, then I am not fulfilling my purpose as a parent." - Natalia Aiza [00:16:29] "Most of the time with OCD, we really have to feel worse before we feel better, and I just want to normalize that feeling of dislike for the process because it is a hard, formative challenge." - Natalia Aiza [00:19:27] "OCD will try to interrupt and get in the way of any progress you are making, and the key is to respect the structure because the structure will immediately give you feedback, and it's feedback that hurts." - Natalia Aiza [00:20:45] "Human beings are notorious for mental gymnastics. We can create so many rationalizations for why not to do something, so it's really important to pause and relook at your own thought process." - Kristina Orlova [00:21:45] "OCD wants us in our heads, feeling like we can think our way out of it, but we can't. Only change and real-world experiences shake up your belief system." - Natalia Aiza Our Guest Natalia Aniela Aíza, LPC, is the founder and executive director of Kairos Wellness Collective, a leading OCD clinic based in Boulder, Colorado. A Harvard graduate and daughter of a political refugee, Natalia brings a unique perspective to mental health care, shaped by her multicultural background and fluency in multiple languages. Justin and Dan open the show with their big-picture view of Auburn football's 24-14 loss to Arkansas — the second time this month that the Tigers have lost to a team they beat on the road last season. Justin makes a point about recruiting. Dan looks at the lack of forward progress. Then the guys do their usual offense and defense breakdowns, starting with an attack that turned the ball over five times and made a switch from Hank Brown back to Payton Thorne at quarterback. Then it's a look at a defense that played well enough to win in a lot of areas, with the gigantic exception of the most important downs. The episode ends with a journey through the Week 4 results across college football and a discussion of bands that were more than just their one or two well-known hits. Basketball practice starts this week, by the way.If you're receiving this free podcast episode and would like to upgrade to a paid subscription that gives you access to all stories and premium podcast episodes, subscribe using the button below or clicking this link.Follow Dan (@dnpck) and Justin (@JFergusonAU) on Twitter.Photo Credit: Zach Bland/Auburn Tigers This is a public episode. In this episode, Jack explains: What's changed: we couldn't wait to get gone from our familial home, that's often not the case today. Helicopter parents How a definition of “success” could well differ between parent and young adult Parental guilt How difficulties can breed resilience Don't push them out, pull them out and how volunteerism helps with that The statistic that one in four young adults cut off communication with parents It's a serious subject for those who are in the middle of it, but Jack lightens it up with a few personal anecdotes.  Watch for his upcoming book The Launch Code: Loving and Letting Go of Our Adult Children. Laura Wiley Haynes returns to shed light on the complex intergenerational aspects of the current gender crisis. Why do so many young people today seem unable to launch into adulthood, remaining perennially online and disembodied, reportedly held back by feelings they label “dysphoria?” What developmental shifts have occurred in parenting over the last few generations that might explain this phenomenon?Laura shares her insights on how the lack of dyadic care—one-on-one nurturing relationships—has contributed to a generation of children who struggle with self-perception and emotional regulation. Could the rise of screens and social media be robbing our kids of the deep, relational connections they need to thrive? We explore the implications of group care environments and how they may hinder the development of essential social skills. As we discuss the alarming trend of young adults romanticizing their emotional turmoil, I ask: what happens when a young man on estrogen experiences mood swings reminiscent of a teenage girl? Is this a sign of deeper unresolved issues? Join us as we unpack these critical questions and more, revealing the intricate web of attachment, trauma, and the urgent need for effective parenting in today's world. Tune in to discover how we can better support our children in navigating their identities and emotions.Laura Wiley Haynes is a writer, a mother & grandmother, and a former CASA. Episode 324 is (finally) here. LAFC got back to their MLS schedule but left their offense somewhere along the way as the Houston Dynamo came into BMO and knocked off our boys, 2-0.  LAFC got off to a slow start, made even worse by Ezequiel Ponce's header to give the visiting side a 1-0 lead into the half. Steve would switch to a 4-3-3 in the second half, but it would do little to stem the tide. Lawrence Ennali did his best Sonic the Hedgehog impersonation as he flew by Ryan Hollingshead and Eddie Segura, made one touch to round Hugo Lloris, and softly tapped in his first MLS goal to double the lead. That would be all Houston would need, and, unfortunately, all Ennali would contribute, as he tore his ACL later in the match. Also on this episode, the LAFC Unified Team takes the pitch at BMO for the first time, Kike talks about next year, and Filly and Scarf figure out who the heck starts and could make the 20 for our next match in Houston. Enjoy Episode 324!

My guest today is Dr. Bianca Busch, and we're getting into the “failure to launch” or the stalling we see from some young adults. Dr. Busch shares what drew her to working with college students, and we talk about getting “cut off” from your child's medical, mental health, and grade information once they turn 18. Dr. Busch shares the benefits of psychiatrists working with adolescents and parents in conjunction.   I ask Dr. Busch what she sees when young adults and their parents feel stuck - anxiety, depression, mismatched expectations - there's a lot playing in here, and it's messy. Dr. Busch shares some tools, boundaries, & motivators, and I play with the idea of mismatched timelines. I ask what parents can do when they feel scared and what we can do when we recognize that our behaviors and beliefs are the problem and for signs that our adolescent might need more substantial help & support. We end on a happy note - celebrating our hard work in parenting, even when it doesn't look exactly how we expected it to turn out.   Takeaways from the show Getting cut off from medical & mental health information once your child turns 18  The acceleration & benefits of when psychiatrists are able to work with adolescents and their parents  Is “failure to launch” a fair expression? Why are young adults stalled out?   Mismatched expectations & goals between young adults & parents  There's no young adults who don't want to launch; we have to discover what's in their way  When you know your child needs support, but they're resistant  The difference between “get your shit together” and a child whose safety is at risk  Motivational interviewing & coming from a place of compassion  Digging in and challenging our own beliefs and being open-minded to hearing our adolescents goals, ideas, & plans  Signs your young adult might need additional outside support  Give yourself grace! Celebrate the parenting work you have done! We are diving into the research of SOSF project leader and turtle specialist Alessia Lavigne, who has been trying to understand why turtle and tortoise eggs sometimes fail to hatch. Turtles and tortoises (known collectively as the testudines) are, like sharks, one of the most threatened groups of animals on the planet. Understanding when and why reproduction fails is crucial to ensuring their protection - and Alessia has made huge strides in this area. In this episode we dive deep into her research and learn everything there is to know about these amazing creatures. CCP111: On Gen Z Men Failing to Launch

Church & Culture Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 14, 2024 33:18

In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the subject of a recent Christianity Today article written by Russell Moore titled, “Why Young Men Are Failing to Launch.” The phrase “failure to launch” is not new on the cultural scene; however, it is increasingly becoming reflective of Gen Z men. This is a generation that Dr. White is very familiar with following the research he did for his book Meet Generation Z. So why do Gen Z men seem to struggle so much with branching out on their own? Episode Links As discussed, one of the fundamental issues is that men these days don't seem to know what it means to be a man. This was a trend that Dr. White began to see in culture, and was what prompted the development of a series he delivered at Mecklenburg Community Church called “Defining Manhood.” This topic has also been broached through the Church & Culture Podcast in episodes CCP101: On Bluey and Modern Fatherhood and CCP72: On Toxic Masculinity. In addition to the CT article from Moore, other journalists who study culture have also taken note of this issue affecting Gen Z men. While there are many others out there, these are a good place to start if you're looking for more to read on this topic. Hannah Fry, writing in the Los Angeles Times, titled her article “A ‘failure to launch': Why young people are having less sex.” Christine Emba wrote a very interesting article on this subject in The Washington Post titled, “Men are lost. Here's a map out of the wilderness.” Glen Stanton, in an effort to help shed some light on this topic, wrote an article titled “Manhood Is Not Natural” in The Journal of the Witherspoon Institute. An article in Medium was titled “Are Gen Z Men Really That Undateable?” The conversation also explored whether parents could be to blame for this failure to launch. After all, Gen Z have been raised by Gen X. And much of their parenting was focused on not becoming a helicopter parent. The result? They became too under protective when it came to parenting. On that topic, Dr. White gave a series at Meck called “The Under-Protective Parent.” Lastly, today's conversation talked about the prevalence of domestic abuse and the tragic affects that it has on families. If you or someone you know is being abused, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800.799.7233.
