We explore how art inspires activism, questions societal norms, and fosters collective resilience. From daring theatrical productions to sunflower-lined streets, Amber reveals art's transformative potential to unite and inspire. The co-host of Friendship Dilemma, Morgan Gire, returns to the show to talk about Martin McDonagh's great, Oscar-nominated black comedy, "In Bruges," starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes. While the film does take place during the holiday season, it's the bleak morality play and violence that take center stage. What actually happens to Farrell's character at the very end of the film? Do actors in movies really know how to use guns with blanks? What bird is the symbol for the dreamlike city of Bruges? All this, plus Kerry gives us three more titles from "1,001 Movies You must See Before You Die," one of which is a David Lynch film, which sparks a brief discussion of his work.  Book movies coevred: "The Puppetmaster" (1993) "Wild Strawberries" (1957) "The Elephant Man" (1980) Hear Morgan Gire and Erik Childress on "The Friendship Dilemma"  Follow Christmas Movies Actually on: Facebook BlueSky Email us a movie suggestion, question or comment at christmasmoviesactually@gmail.com

It's not a painting or a sculpture... but another form of art that deserves attention as we meander through the world of famous works of art together.  In this episode, Claire brings Fallingwater, designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright for the Kaufmann family in 1935, and constructed between 1936 - 1938. The woodland residence in the Appalachian Mountains of rural Pennsylvania has become an iconic work of organic architecture. Built partly over a waterfall along the Bear Run River, the home embodies the idea that the surrounding natural world can be seamlessly incorporated into the design and made an experiential part of the living spaces. It blends in with its environment while presenting a unique and daring engineering challenge. It's on the UNECSO World Heritage List, the Smithsonian named it one of the “Places to See Before You Die,” and called "best all-time work of American architecture" by the American Institute of Architects.  If you'd like to see more images of Fallingwater and past episodes, check out our Instagram. If you haven't already been adding cemeteries to your travel itineraries, then you've been missing out. These quiet, contemplative places might be filled with the bones and ashes of the deceased, but they hold a lot more than meets the eye. Cemeteries are full of history, both in terms of what (or, rather, who) lies beneath, and in the stories of their construction. Some were built by famous architects, others dreamt up by creative horticulturalists, and some were designed to invite people in as places of recreation. These are not just places to remember loved ones. They are also places full of stories and teeming with life. Today, Angie Orth welcomes Loren Rhoads, author of 199 Cemeteries to See Before You Die and Wish You Were Here: Adventures in Cemetery Travel. In the early '90s, a travel hiccup forced her to alter her original itinerary, eventually landing her in a London bookshop, piquing her interest in cemeteries as travel destinations. You'll hear about what keeps drawing her to these sacred spaces, and how attitudes about enjoying cemetery grounds have changed throughout history. You'll hear a few historical tidbits about some of the world's most famous cemeteries, and why they're encouraging people to visit. Loren also shares some of her favorite cemeteries in the US and abroad, and what made those visits so impactful.   What You'll Learn: ●     Why cemeteries should be added to your travel plans (2:49)●     The real reason Père Lachaise is the most-visited cemetery in the world (4:38)●     How a historic L.A. cemetery became a popular tourist destination (10:33)●     The many ways to experience a cemetery (13:06)●     Her top 3 unmissable cemeteries (15:51)Connect with Loren Rhoads:Website: https://lorenrhoads.com/Facebook author page: https://www.facebook.com/LorenRhoadsAuthor/Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/morbidloren.bsky.socialTwitter: https://twitter.com/morbidlorenInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/morbidloren/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvTI4Zh74nsCLGmOBqulRRQConnect with Angie Orth:Website + Blog: https://angieaway.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/angieaway/?hl=enConnect with AAA:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/aaa-auto-club-enterprisesInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/AAAAutoClubEnterprisesFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/AAAAutoClubEnterprisesTraveling with AAA Podcast: https://www.ace.aaa.com/travel/information/traveling-with-aaa-podcastPlan your next vacation with AAA: https://aaa.com/travel

Christine knows travel is one of the best things of life in spite of all of its challenges. Whether you are traveling within your own city or around the world. Learn the art of serendipity, enjoy the journey, and tackle problems one at a time. Maybe you cannot get out there and find serendipity, but you can cultivate a mindset that accepts boldness, openness, and whimsicality. There are a lot of great things planned but the joys of traveling are spontaneous events that cannot be structured in a schedule. For the modern traveler, serendipity is that one thing that every journey needs, yet nobody can plan. Every travel story needs a plot twist: an accident, an accident of fate, a lucky twist that leads to a new world. Today's guest is Patricia Schultz. Patricia is the author of the #1 New York Times best seller 1000 Places to See Before You Die, and 1000 Places to See in the United States and Canada Before you Die.  Most recently she is the author of Why We Travel. For years Patricia Schultz has been telling us where to travel. The gunman killed two of the Chicago firm's partners and an employee and critically wounded two more employees before killing himself. He missed taking a bullet only because the gunman didn't see him. The gunman left behind a hit list of fourteen names. He later learned his name was second on the list. After the shooting, and despite his youth, Breslow's partners voted him in as managing partner. Thrust into leadership by default, he faced incredible challenges, including consoling the families of the victims, dealing with the staff's PTSD, and rebuilding a sense of safety and morale. He spent more than 41 years inventing toys and games including Simon, Operation, Guesstures, the Evel Knievel Motorcycle, Mousetrap, and UNO Attack and is the only toy designer to win the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval twice. He was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 1998 Kathryn also interviews Author Patricia Schultz.Pairing beautiful, transportive color photos with pearls of wisdom, lists, and essential travel tips, Patricia Schultz focuses not on where or when to travel, but on how travel enriches us and why we choose to do it. Leading with the idea that travel is food for the soul, Schultz passionately (and convincingly) makes the case that it's one of the most richly rewarding experiences we can have, whether we travel near or far, in person or virtually. Alongside these evocative images are Schultz's own stories of some of her most rewarding trips, like going in search of the Northern Lights in Alaska's Arctic Circle, exploring Florence in her post-collegiate days, and finding her most lasting memory of a trip to Zimbabwe in a classroom of five-year-olds. The year at home: Patricia Schultz on the serendipity of travel The biggest travel story of the week was the anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the subsequent global shutdown of travel. To mark “where we were,” this time last year, editor in chief Arnie Weissmann wrote his column on the recollections of travel executives and colleagues. One of the people he reached out to was Patricia Schultz, bestselling author of “1,000 Places to See Before You Die.” But our subsequent podcast with Schultz focuses less on the shutdown and more on the serendipity of spontaneous travel experiences. Instead of spending the shutdown updating “1,000 Places,” Schultz during has been writing a different kind of book, one about how curiosity and open-mindedness can take a regular travel experience and elevate it to the unforgettable. In recounting travel memories of Morocco and New York and how travel experiences great and small can change your perspective, Schultz’s observations may re-ignite your wanderlust once more.
