TRIGGER WARNING: Discussions of Depression, Panic Attacks, and brief mentions of suicidal ideation The biggest misconception we both had about becoming “famous” is that fame would make us happy.  In this episode we reflect on how we really felt mentally when we thought we had “made it” in Hollywood and how we learned through some of our biggest 90210 years that mental health does not discriminate. We also bring in the ultimate rockstar and frontman of Kodaline, Steve Garrigan, to give us a male perspective on his struggles with anxiety, depression, and severe panic attacks.  Steve experienced his own mental health battle, both literally and figuratively behind the curtain, for years before sharing his story with close family, friends, and now the rest of the world. If you're interested in hearing more about Steve's story, you can grab a copy of his book High Hopes, anywhere books are sold.  Visit Clare at www.clare.com/unzipped and use code UNZIPPED to receive $5 off your first gallon of paint.  Produced by Dear Media

Here is a bit about Tara: Tara creates with the intent to mesmerize and inspire. Her art is generally whimsical, vibrant, imaginative, and always leaves the viewer with a story to contemplate. She works in all mediums but mainly creates in watercolor and ink. More than anything, Tara's work is inspired by her vivid dreams and the mysteries of the universe. She often finds that her most recurring themes are trees, aquatic life, imaginary creatures, and organically shaped buildings. She also enjoys finding inspiration from other artists around the globe while drinking tea and browsing magazines at the bookstore. Steve speaks frankly about the painful shyness that dominated his early years and how his parents tried to help him. Later Jarlath asks about the devastating effects of tasting fame in your Leaving Cert year and how he wrote Kodaline's hit single High Hopes at a time when he felt like he had hit rock bottom.   From the hilarious accounts of his earliest roles as a Pokemon and making an absolute fool of himself in front of Tony Hawk (without whom Kodaline would not exist) as well as his sobering account of the terrifying panic attack he experienced at the age of 20 and much more, this is a fascinating conversation with one of Ireland's top musical talents.   Steve's book High Hopes is available in all good bookstores and the list of cognitive distortions that is referenced in the interview can be found here https://positivepsychology.com/cognitive-distortions/   To hear every episode in full and to gain access to the entire back-catalogue of over 500 Irishman Abroad episodes that are not available on iTunes for just the price of a pint every month visit www.patreon.com/irishmanabroad Supplementary research provided by John Meagher. Lead singer of the hugely successful Irish rock band Kodaline, Steve Garrigan plays to thousands of fans worldwide - his business is being in the spotlight. But for years, Steve was privately battling his own demons. Here in this deeply personal memoir, he shares his experiences. From his childhood growing up in Dublin and the shyness that only dissolved when he was playing an instrument or in front of a microphone, to the highs of rock star success touring and playing stadiums, to the lows of anxiety, depression and panic attacks and how he was to discover that it was only by sharing his deepest vulnerability that he was able to work through the darkness. High Hopes is the candid account of how everyone carries a story - and how by embracing all the different parts of our true selves, we will ultimately find freedom and happiness.

Congratulations, fellow education specialists - we've made it to October half term! We're doing our bit for the Welsh lockdown and have fired up the remote recording gear to bring you our latest offering from our houses (so please accept our apologies for the odd glitch in the sound quality). Since we're at the half-time break in a very long and very strange term, we thought this would be another good time to model excellent practice by letting our hair down and putting something out that's a little lighter and looser than usual. As ever, Emma brings the substance, with a couple of book extracts and a tweet thread that muse on the nature of being a teacher. Tom brings us a blog, a heartwarming tweet about his previous life in the classroom, and the usual random news story with only the most tenuous link to education. There is a growing sense that the one certainty we can count on over the coming weeks, months, and years, is uncertainty. From the ancient stoics and philosophers to contemporary historians, writers and economists, thinkers have grappled with this concept and its implications. What can they tell us about our current predicament, and can we learn to tolerate uncertainty in our daily lives? In our forthcoming Behind the Headlines, we explore what uncertainty means today. In the midst of a global pandemic, with looming lockdowns, an unsettled political climate, economic volatility and the spectre of false news, we will consider possible responses to life in the ‘age of uncertainty' and discuss the ways in which unpredictability shapes our feelings about the future. Speakers: Professor Siobhán Garrigan, Loyola Chair of Theology, Head of School of Religion, TCD, will look at how Christianity offers a wealth of resources on how to cope with uncertainty … as well as quite a few examples of how not to cope with it. Professor Kenneth Pearce, Ussher Assistant Professor in Berkeley Studies, Head of Department of Philosophy, TCD, will explore early modern traditions of philosophy and their approach to uncertainty, asking if making peace with uncertainty is essential for life in the modern world. Professor Mani Ramaswami, Professor of Neurogenetics, Director of Trinity Institute of Neurosciences (TCIN), will examine uncertainty from the perspective of Neuroscience, looking at our brain's ability to accurately predict the future, and how we can use uncertainty to our advantage. Carmel Crimmins, Financial Desk Deputy Editor, Reuters, will look at how we produce the news during a global pandemic with societies under lockdown, rumour and misinformation proliferating online and stories breaking on multiple fronts.

The Irish musical landscape could have been so different. Yes. That IS Gavin James. The man who has over 1.5 BILLION streams could have been a part of the line-up. And if he was in the band what a talent they'd have but it wasn't to be and they ended up with Jason... (only messing Jay yer class!) Steve told Fergal: I knew Gavin for years but we knew he really wasn't going to be a bass player. With that voice he had to become a singer-songwriter. But I still texted him and asked. Look at him now!  A couple of days later Jay joined. It's amazing really how things turn out. Steve Garrigan from Kodaline revealed all in a warm, engaging chat with Fergal D'Arcy on TodayFM. That starts with the new single “Where you Are”, which sets up their yet-to-be formally announced new album. Garrigan takes us through the reasons they chose to self-produce this time and how they recorded the entire record in a kitchen. He also discusses how the album takes a hard look into anxiety and mental health, two areas the frontman has been raising awareness on with U2's Adam Clayton and his Walk In My Shoes charity. Finally, though, Garrigan shares a charming story of a trip Kodaline recently took to India that involves a freeway chase by a super fan.
