We discuss many topics on this show centered around Sumo Palace (aka Sumo Hall). We start all the way from the original incarnation of the building nearly 200 years ago to the incarnations of the Kokugikan that followed, then the many big matches and events that took place there over the years and it's recent resurgence over the last month with STARDOM, Zero1, NJPW & NOAH all have or are about to run shows there in the span of a month. Historical content we touch on is too much to list but include:   Rikidozan's start in Sumo Palace and incident with Masahiko Kimura.   NJPW's success in the 80's and Inoki's ways & matches.   The IWGP Title inaugural tournaments.   Tiger Mask(s)!   The famous riots in 1984 & 1987 at the venue.   WWF running in Japan and their interactions with AJPW & NJPW in the early 90's.   Super J Cup and it's legacy among English speaking fans as well as Japanese.   The dark ages of wrestling in Japan in the 2000s and the many companies that ran it over the years.   Thank you for listening to our show and please follow Fumi @fumihikodayo , Dylan @Viva_Zero , Jonathan @JonthanFoye and of course the show @EasternLariat for updates on all things Japanese wrestling, and a new episode with Dylan re-joined by STRIGGA very soon!   Thank you!

I sat down with a good friend, Jonathan Foye, to discuss his book Ganbaru: How All Japan Pro Wrestling Survived the Year 2000 Roster Split. We discuss the all-too-human drama of this story of grief, conflict, separation, and a will to persevere, playing out in and out of the ring.  In the year 2000, Mitsuharu Misawa left All Japan Pro Wrestling. He took all but two of the company's contracted wrestlers with him. To keep the company alive, company owner Motoko Baba made two phone calls. One was to a man who had walked out on the company a decade ago. The other was to an age-old rival. He is the current Editor of Insights Magazine for the Uniting Church in NSW and the ACT. He holds a PhD in Communications and tutors part time at the University of New South Wales. Jonathan enjoys running, watching pro wrestling, and playing videogames. He lives in the Blue Mountains with his wife, Sarah, their son James, and their Labrador, Walter.

DH, as he is known, was always a beer lover, but during his stint teaching english in japan it became a passion. Arriving home in Kentucky he and his partners were inspired not only to make beer, but the very best, and won’t stop until this goal is achieved. Usually after we finish chatting, we go on to our cocktail of the week, but this week we are doing something a little different. Since we’re talking beer, I decided to scrap the cocktail of the week for this episode.  Instead we’re going on a tour! When I visited Country Boy, DH walked me through the brewery and I thought why not take you with me as well. So consider this our first Lush Tour…. Look out for a cooler near you to see if Country Boy is stocked! I will be writing a piece on my travels through Kentucky so make sure to check back on alushlifemanul.com or my sister site bestbitsworldwide.com or head to www.kentuckytourism.com to find out more about Kentucky. For more, check out our article on ganbaru: https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/ganbaru/ "Do your best!" "Hang in there!" "FIGHT!" The Japanese verb 頑張る has a wide variety of English translations, and that's because it's such a nuanced word. Depending on how you say it and who you say it to, it could be an encouragement or a real downer. The Tofugu team sat down to discuss the definitions, translations, and our personal feeling about this complex word. And we really got into the weeds (societally speaking) when Michael, Mami, and Kanae navigate the sometimes-oppressive feeling ganbaru can carry.

Haber si me puedes decir algo, muchas gracias. He aquí varias definiciones de GAMBARU: “¡trabaja duro! Manga Review for Street Fighter: Sakura Ganbaru! Volume 1 by Masahiko Nakahira. Translated by Michelle Hayashi and Rie Shibazaki. Adapted by Jim Zubkavich and Matt Moylan. Published by Udon for $12.95, size: 8.1 x 5.8 inches. Originally published in Japan by Shinseisha. 15-year-old Sakura Kasugane has a secret life outside of school that she doesn't want her parents to know about. She is a street fighter being trained by a martial artist from Hong Kong named Dan Hibiki. He  originally came to Japan to study martial arts but he has become more and more intrigued by Sakura's natural talent when it comes to studying fighting techniques. All he has to do is show her a move and she can not only mimic it but incorporate her own personal styles to compliment it. Another student at her school, the heir to the vast Kazuki business empire, Karin Kazuki, is also a street fighter. Her ancestors were great warriors who lived by the motto "In all things, be victorious!" She has translated this belief into becoming the greatest street fighter in the city. She has no equal until she encounters Sakura, and then she sets all her energy into defeating her. I was never a big fan of the Street Fighter videogames, even though I remember when it was strictly a stand up arcade game. There was a time when Street Fighter 2 coming to the Sega Genesis was the biggest news this side of Halo 3. I bought the game and was decidedly underwhelmed by the experience, perhaps because my best friend could beat me easily. But I like the IDEA of the videogames and the design of its characters and I like a bit of fighting manga so I decided to give Sakura Ganbaru a shot. First up, the art is awful. Nakahira's characters all look a bit plump and the two main female leads look the opposite of feminine. Even when there's a panty shot, it feels like you're looking at a guy in his underwear because of Nakahira's lack of knowledge or total denial of the female body. I would even call the art a bit primitive. While the fights should have plenty of money shots, they mostly consist of blurred drawings with what look like small explosions signifying impacts. You really shouldn't have an artist that does poor fight panels doing a manga like Sakura. The personalities of the characters were interesting, if a bit colorless, but the art was just way too ugly. Has six color plates and some bonus pages taken from the Street Fighter Alpha manga showing how Sakura met Ryu. My Rating: C
