Today's guest is Liz Wiseman, author of New York Times bestseller Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter, The Multiplier Effect: Tapping the Genius Inside Our Schools, Impact Players: How to Take the Lead, Play Bigger and Multiply Your Impact and Wall Street Journal bestseller Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work. Liz has conducted significant research in the field of leadership and collective intelligence and writes for Harvard Business Review, Fortune, and a variety of other business and leadership journals. A former executive at Oracle Corporation, over the course of 17 years, Liz was the Vice President of Oracle University and a global leader in Human Resource Development. Her management research and executive development firm The Wiseman Group is focused on developing leaders around the globe who can take on the world's toughest challenges. Her client list includes Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter. As you will see in this show, I met Liz when she spoke at Tesla and it resulted in one of the most memorable and emotional professional experiences in my life. On the show, we dive into the concepts of Multipliers and Rookie Smarts and she tells personal insight stories that have helped make her the person she is today. She explains the interesting reason why she decided to leave Oracle, and how that planted the seed for one of her books. We discuss her insights as a mother of 4 and a busy professional, and how her world was changed when she realized the management skill she used at work is the exact same skillset she used at home. She also shares how and why she created labels in her books to help provide a framework and language to discuss what she calls the “undiscussable” - A multiplier is a genius maker and helps to activate everyone around them to be their best by spending their energy on extracting and extending the genius of others. A diminisher does the exact opposite, by restricting others and holding them back from showing their what she calls “native genius”. We will discuss this in detail, including giving an example of the “accidental diminisher” - someone who has positive intentions but inadvertently diminishes those around them. She also gives some sage advice for parents on how to balance life and family. Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week, I'm replaying a conversation with a guest I know you all love - Liz Wiseman. Liz is the author of New York Times bestseller Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter, The Multiplier Effect: Tapping the Genius Inside Our Schools, and Wall Street Journal bestseller Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work. Liz is also the CEO of The Wiseman Group, a leadership research and development firm and in 2017 she was #35 on the Thinkers50 list. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone looking to improve their leadership skills and build better teams. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… some leaders are “diminishers,” while others are “multipliers”. The diminishers tend to get less than half of people's intelligence or capability; whereas, multipliers get all of it. But that's not all, there are also “accidental diminishers” - these are really well-meaning people trying to be good bosses but yet having a diminishing effect on those around them. In this episode, Liz dives into these leadership styles and explores each one. WHAT I LOVE MOST… being aware of the kind of leader you are will help you improve the way you communicate, manage, and inspire those around you to do their best work. Engineers like systems and procedures. Maybe that's why my guest in this episode, Elise Foster, an engineer by training and now a keynote speaker, executive coach and leadership consultant, appreciated how The Story Theater Method could help her engineer her stories. Elise Foster got her start in the speaking business when she was asked by Liz Wiseman, the author of the best-selling book, Multipliers – How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter, to co-author a book with her. That book, The Multiplier Effect – Tapping the Genius Inside Our Schools, required that Elise deliver keynotes in front of large and small audiences. She quickly realized that she needed to elevate her speaking and storytelling skills. Elise realized that the data, facts, and details that she relied on as an engineer didn't translate well to motivational keynotes on leadership. She had watched Liz deliver inspiring keynotes filled with engaging and relevant stories that captivated her audience attention. She knew she needed help making her stories come alive. I had worked with Liz back in 2004 when she was the VP of Oracle University. She hired me to teach storytelling to her global training leaders. When she brought Elise on board, Liz recommended that Elise get in touch with me. As fate would have it, I was speaking in Indianapolis where Elise lived at the time, and she came to see me. We had an immediate connection. Elise attended my Story Theater Retreat in Colorado Springs and has since gone on to incorporate The Nine Steps of Story Structure in crafting her stories. We've also become good friends. In this episode she shares her signature story, a bedtime story for leaders, and how that one core story has stood the test of time and generated a consistent stream of income. Listen and learn from my special guest, Elise Foster, the president of Leadership Potential Consulting.

Impact Players A lack of fulfilment in the workplace is not a product of overwork but perhaps a lack of challenge and IMPACT. People desire to be engaged and challenged. They want to feel that they are using their full potential... stretching, learning and growing! Work that is uninspiring or unengaging leads to a lack of fulfilment. On top of this, being that we spend the majority of our time at work this lack of fulfilment can come home with us. Liz discusses why it's important to challenge workers and how. Wouldn't it be better to be excited about going to work and energised after leaving work? Guest Bio. In every organization there are Impact Players – those indispensable colleagues who can be counted on in critical situations and who consistently receive high-profile assignments and new opportunities. Whether they are on center stage or behind the scenes, managers know who these top players are, understand their worth, and want more of them on their team. While their impact is obvious, it's not always clear what actually makes these professionals different from their peers. In Impact Players, New York Times bestselling author and researcher Liz Wiseman reveals the secrets of these stellar professionals who play the game at a higher level. Drawing on insights from leaders at top companies, Wiseman explains what the most influential players are doing differently, how small and seemingly insignificant differences in how we think and act can make an enormous impact, and why–with a little coaching–this mindset is available to everyone who wants to contribute at their highest level and do more meaningful work. Based on a study of 170 top contributors, Wiseman identifies the mindsets that prevent otherwise smart, capable people from contributing to their full potential and the five practices that differentiate Impact Players: • While others do their job, Impact Players figure out the real job to be done. • While others wait for direction, Impact Players step up and lead. • While others escalate problems, Impact Players move things across the finish line. • While others attempt to minimize change, Impact Players are learning and adapting to change. • While others add to the load, Impact Players make heavy demands feel lighter. Wiseman makes clear that these practices—and the right mindset—can help any employee contribute at their fullest and shows leaders how they can raise the level of play for everyone on the team. Impact Players is your playbook for the new workplace. Impact Players - a term borrowed from the sports world. How do you measure value of impact players. High impact, contributing, but playing below their potential. Impact player brings 3.5 greater than someone doing their job well. Work was so much better, people were doing the right kind of work! One of the most crucial responsibilities of a leader is to grow more leaders. It's not something that is highlighted often enough! In her research, NY Times best selling author Liz Wiseman found that those who work to bring out the genius in others have a 2x impact on the results of the business. She called these folks “Multipliers”. She also discovered that those who diminish others reduce productivity by 48%. Most astonishing was that there was a proportion of well-intentioned leaders who were ‘accidental diminishers'. In our conversation we explore what we can do to avoid being an accidental diminisher. Why you should listen: leadership skills and mindset for being a multiplier How your followers can read your mind and know your leadership mindset Why being an optimist all the time is bad leadership practice - we also need to ‘signal the struggle' Embed this crucial leadership skill: There are three stages to learning to be a successful multiplier, starting with the three ‘whats' of delegation: what does good or great look like, what does ‘done' look like, and what's not in range for the task We explore leadership journeys from the classroom to the boardroom How Liz liked being bossy and that led to a career in teaching leadership How to overcome fear of losing control and diminished status if we become Multipliers One of the assumptions or practices we need to adopt as an MVP is to become a problem solver and not just a job holder.

I’m beyond thrilled to release today’s show and can thank Liz enough for being my guest so please enjoy this episode of Insight Out!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/bePatron?u=23010497)

Welcome to the What's Next! podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week, I have Liz Wiseman on the podcast. TODAY’S MAIN MESSAGE… There are leaders who are “Diminishers,” while others are “Mulitpliers”. These ‘Diminishers’ tend to get less than half of people's intelligence or capability; whereas, these ‘Multipliers’ get all of it. But that’s not all, there are also “Accidental Diminishers” - these are really well-meaning people trying to be good bosses but yet having a diminishing effect on those around them. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Being aware of the kind of leader you are will help you improve the way you communicate, manage and inspire those around you to do their best work. A PIECE OF ADVICE FOR LEADERS… Allow diverse styles of thinking and personalities the space to thrive. Pay attention to who is quiet and who has an overpowering personality. Give those who need time to think, and process information the opportunity to speak as those who are quick on their feet. It’s the multiple styles of contributing and leading that creates a great team, innovative ideas, and a healthy work environment. The job you take is not that relevant. What really is relevant who you work for because your first boss out of school or any boss you work for. That person is going to shape your career opportunities far more than that job description. Go work for a growing company because where there's growth there's opportunity. And also a lot of sins are forgiven in growth environments. – Liz WisemanLiz Wiseman teaches leadership to executives and emerging leaders around the world. I very much want to be a multiplier, but I have to say, my biggest [00:01:30] angst is the fact that I'm stuck working for a diminisher. What do I do?
