Dr. Dennard had to leave Texas to receive abortion care after learning she was carrying a fetus with anencephaly, a fatal condition in which the skull and brain do not fully develop. Dr. Dennard began her medical career in The University of Texas Southwestern Health system working at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Amy Edmondson: Right Kind of Wrong Amy Edmondson is the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School, where she studies people and organizations seeking to make a positive difference in the world through the work they do. She has pioneered the concept of psychological safety for over twenty years and is recognized as number one on the Thinkers50 global ranking of management thinkers. For over nineteen years this week's guest, Dr. Levy has been operating EBL Coaching, which specializes in one-on-one home, and virtual tutoring for students in grades Preschool - year 12. She is on a mission to get many more individuals with disabilities the best and most appropriate academic support that they desperately need.  Dr. Levy is a consistent advocate for those with learning and attentional challenges and wants to get the word out to the world so they too can join her campaign. So, a bit of background, Dr. Levy is an educational expert, business owner, public speaker, and author based near New York City. She holds both a master's degree in special education and a Doctorate Degree in Education from Nova University. Dr. Levy's five-year research study on alternative strategies for teaching reading comprehension found her winning a fifth-place Westinghouse Science and Talent Award. In 2017, she was selected as one of Bergen County's Commission on the Status of Women Honourees during Women's History Month. Amy Edmondson is the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School, which is a Chair established to support the study of human interactions that lead to the creation of successful enterprises that contribute to the betterment of society. And in today's conversation we certainly talk about Harvard, what it's like to work on a college campus, and what it's like to be specifically at that college campus during this time in 2023 as we record today's conversation. Amy has been recognized by the Biannual Thinkers50 Global Ranking of Management Thinkers since 2011, and recently was ranked #1 in 2021. She's received that organization's Breakthrough Idea Award in 2019 and Talent Award in 2017. She studies teaming, psychological safety (which is going to be a core concept and competency that you've probably heard about at some point if you study environments and teams and groups), and we're going to talk about the famous Aristotle study that Google did that found that psychological safety was the #1 factor in determining team success, so this is definitely a deep dive into that concept and something that hopefully you can take with your teams and organizations. She also studies organizational learning and her articles have been published in numerous academic and management outlets, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Harvard Business Review, and California Management Review. She's written many books, so we're going to talk about The Fearless Organization, which she wrote in 2019, we're going to talk about her latest book, The Right Kind of Wrong, so a lot of this conversation is about mistakes and failures, and I highly recommend you check out that book. She's also written books around this concept of teaming, including Teaming to Innovate and Extreme Teaming. At her core, you're going to find Amy to be humble but brilliant, you're going to find her to be nuanced and thoughtful when it comes to psychology and the science of humans, and she is someone that I feel as though, even though she's got all these accolades, I feel like I could've talked to forever.  Amy had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “A mindset is something that happens inside your head. It's an approach. It's an orientation” (6:35). “A psychologically safe environment in the classroom is mission-critical for learning and learners” (9:30). “Safe spaces and psychological safety are almost at odds, almost two opposing ideas rather than compatible ideas [in an educational space]” (12:20). “Classrooms can be environments where people can take risks and occasionally failures will happen… and through those we will learn and grow and get to be better versions of ourselves” (14:40). “Psychological safety for me has always been about helping people take their foot off the brakes” (15:05). “The day you decide you don't need to learn anymore, and your mind is made up and your opinions about various people and groups is made up, is the day you cease to grow (16:35). “It starts with a recognition that other human beings are just as important as you are” (21:10). “We all want to feel that we matter” (23:15). “The meaningful memories [on our death beds] have to do with other humans” (29:10). “There's an asymmetry [to psychological safety]” (30:35). “Vulnerability is a fact” (33:00). “If I'm unwilling to confront my vulnerability, then I'm at risk for unhappy surprises” (33:30). “Neuroscience research suggests that some of the same neurons are firing when we get a psychological assault or harm, like being rejected by a group of friends…, as for a physical harm” (36:20). “Emotions are incredibly important, incredibly powerful in shaping our human experiences (45:20). “Probably the most important capacity people can learn, in sports and in life, is how to tame their emotions” (45:55). “Your emotions can simply be data” (46:40). “The more expert we get in any given field or domain, the more we can effortlessly process context and take it into consideration” (56:25). “The best students, the unusually good students, are curious” (59:40). “To cultivate curiosity and collaboration, you have to truly believe that it's in your interest to do so” (1:00:35). “A mistake is an unintended deviation from a known process… A failure is an undesired outcome” (1:03:15). “There's no such thing as a mistake in new territory” (1:03:55). “It's about creating the safe conditions in which [your kids] can fail” (1:14:30). Harvard Kennedy School faculty member Jorrit de Jong and Harvard Business School Professor Amy Edmondson say the big, intractable problems challenges facing city leaders today are too complex to be addressed by any one agency or government department. Complex challenges like the shortage of economic opportunity and affordable housing, homelessness, the effects of the climate crisis, crime—and can only be solved by multiple organizations working together. But that's easier said than done. Bringing together government agencies, nonprofits, private business, academia, and the public into successful collaborations can be a huge challenge. Different people bring different agendas and goals. They don't necessarily trust each other. Sometimes they can't even agree on what the problem actually is and they fail before even getting started. In a recent study, de Jong and Edmondson found that the most successful problem-solving collaborations have a number of things in common, including building a culture of safety and trust and being empowered to try, fail, and learn from mistakes. Sometimes, they say, the key can be just finding a place to start. Jorrit de Jong is the Emma Bloomberg Senior Lecturer in Public Policy and Management at Harvard Kennedy School. He is director of the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University. His research and teaching focus on the challenges of making the public sector more effective, efficient, equitable, and responsive to social needs. A specialist in experiential learning, Jorrit has taught strategic management and public problem-solving in degree and executive education programs at HKS and around the world. He is also Faculty Co-Chair of the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, a joint program of Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School, the world's most comprehensive effort to advance effective problem-solving and innovation through executive education, research, curriculum development, and fieldwork in cities.He is also Academic Director of the Innovations in Government Program at the Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. In that capacity, he launched the Innovation Field Lab, an experiential learning, executive education, and action-oriented research project working with 15 cities in Massachusetts and New York to help them leverage data, community engagement and innovation to revitalize distressed and underinvested neighborhoods. Taeuk Kang (KISJ 2022) Stanford University student Taeuk Kang was born in Gyeongnam but moved to Jeju, where he attended Korea International School, Jeju Campus for 11 years. He plans to spend the next four years at Stanford University, CA studying Computer Science. He was awarded the Talent Award of Korea in 2020 among 100 Korean citizens for their exemplary talents. His early interest in computers led him to software development. Since then, he has developed multiple projects and apps for both open source and businesses. One of his most recent projects is the LiveCorona Map, an open source COVID visualization tool and information source. As one of the project leads, he automated the statistic collections and created a public pharmacy mask map. The project had been adopted by the Jeju government as the COVID status website early on during the pandemic. He also enjoys creating hobby projects such as a multi-source language dictionary and a failed cloud hosting reseller startup. Now, Taeuk is preparing to study Computer Science at Stanford University, specializing in the Artificial Intelligence area. He wishes to pursue a professional career in a related field. Yorick Thiede ist ein Stand-up-Comedian aus Hamburg, der die ersten 20 Jahre seines Lebens auf einem Bauernhof verbracht hat. Trotzdem spielen Trecker, Grünkohl und Plattdeutsch in seiner Comedy nur eine kleine (bzw. immer kleinere) Rolle. Yorick dreht in unregelmäßigen Abständen Episoden seiner eigenen Dokuserie OFF STAGE, in der er hinter die Kulissen der Hamburger Stand-up-Szene und seiner eigenen Karriere schaut. Ferner organisiert und moderiert er in Hamburg mittlerweile die Show Moinhaha und ist außerdem Träger des Nightwash Talent Award 2020. Jack Ridl was walking with his 7-year-old daughter when she said "with" was the most important word because people always have to be with something, someone, or themselves. When she added that it meant everyone has to makes sure they have a good "with," Jack's perception of the world changed. We were 7- 2. I waited for a brother. My father kept to the hard schedule. Waking the morning of the tenth game, I thought of skipping school and shooting hoops. My cornflakes were ready, soggy. There was a note: "The baby may come today. Get your haircut." We were into January, and the long December snow had turned to slush. The wind was mean. My father was gone. I looked in on my mother still asleep and hoped she'd be OK. I watched her, dreamed her dream: John at forward, me at guard. He'd learn fast. At noon, my father picked me up at the playground. My team was ahead by six. We drove toward the gym. "Mom's OK," he said and tapped his fist against my leg. The Plymouth ship that rode the hood pulled us down the street. "The baby died," he said. I felt my feet press hard against the floorboard. I put my elbow on the door handle, my head on my hand, and watched the town: Kenner's Five and Ten, Walker's Hardware, Jarret's Bakery, Shaffer's Barber Shop, the bank. Dick Green and Carl Stacey waved. "It was a boy." We drove back to school. "You gonna coach tonight?" "Yes." "Mom's OK?" "Yes. She's fine. Sad. But fine. She said for you to grab a sandwich after school. I'll see you at the game. Don't forget about your hair." I got out, walked in late to class. "We're doing geography," Mrs. Wilson said. "Page ninety-seven. The prairie." That night in bed I watched this kid firing in jump shots from everywhere on the court. He'd cut left, I'd feed him a fine pass, he'd hit. I'd dribble down the side, spot him in the corner, thread the ball through a crowd to his soft hands, and he'd loft a star up into the lights where it would pause then gently drop, fall through the cheers and through the net. The game never ended. I fell into sleep. My hair was short. We were 8 and 2.         for my mother and my father Jack Ridl First published in The Journal/Ohio State University Subsequently published in Saint Peter and the Goldfinch (Wayne State University Press)   Jack Ridl, Poet Laureate of Douglas, Michigan (Population 1100), in April 2019 released Saint Peter and the Goldfinch (Wayne State University Press, 2019).  Jack’s Practicing to Walk Like a Heron (WSUPress, 2013) was awarded the National Gold Medal for poetry by ForeWord Review./Indie Pub. His collection Broken Symmetry (WSUPress) was co-recipient of The Society of Midland Authors best book of poetry award for 2006. His Losing Season (CavanKerry Press) was named the best sports book of the year for 2009 by The Institute for International Sport, and The Boston Globe named it one of the five best books about sports. In 2017 it was developed into a Readers Theater work. Winner of The Gary Gildner Prize for Poetry, Jack has been featured on public radio (“It’s Only a Game with Bill Littlefield,” “The Story with Dick Gordon,” and Garrison Keillor’s “The Writer’s Almanac.”) Then Poet Laureate Billy Collins selected his Against Elegies for The Center for Book Arts Chapbook Award. He read in NYCity with Billy Collins and Sharon Dolin at Christmas after 9/11. He and Peter Schakel are co-authors of Approaching Poetry and Approaching Literature, and editors of 250 Poems, all from Bedford/St. Martin’s Press. With William Olsen he edited Poetry in Michigan in Poetry (New Issues Press). He has done readings in many venues including being invited to read at the international Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival, and was one of twelve people in the arts from around the U.S. invited to the Fetzer Institute for their first conference on compassion and forgiveness. In 2014, Jack received the “Talent Award” from the Literacy Society of West Michigan for his “lifetime of work for poetry literacy,” and The Poetry Society of Michigan named him “Honorary Chancellor,” only the second poet so honored. His poem “Remembering the Night I Dreamed Paul Klee Married the Sky” was selected by Naomi Shihab Nye and featured in The New York Times Sunday Magazine for November 3, 2019. Following the presidential election in 2016 he started the “In Time Project,” each Thursday sending out a commentary and poem. Christian Zaschke, the NYC based U.S. correspondent for the leading German Newspaper Sueddeutsche  Zeitung, wrote a feature about his work. Jack and his wife Julie founded the visiting writers series at Hope College where he taught for 37 years. The students named him both their Outstanding Professor and Favorite Professor, and in 1996 The Carnegie (CASE) Foundation named him Michigan Professor of the Year. Nine of his students are included in the anthology Time You Let Me In: 25 Poets Under 25 edited by Naomi Shihab Nye. More than 90 of Jack’s students have earned an MFA degree and more than 90 are published authors, several of whom have received First Book Awards, national honors. Amy Edmondson is the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at Harvard Business School. Her work on teaming, psychological safety, and leadership influences corporate and academic audiences around the world. In November Wiley will publish her latest book, which is called The Fearless Organization: Creating Psychological Safety in the Workplace For Learning, Innovation and Growth. Her other books include Extreme Teaming: Lessons in Complex, Cross-Sector Leadership, which provides new insight into the effective management of global enterprises and teaming across boundaries. She is also the author of Building the Future: Big Teaming for Audacious Innovation, Teaming to Innovate. Amy has published numerous articles in the Harvard Business Review and in leading academic journals . She has been recognized by the biannual Thinkers50 global ranking of management thinkers since 2011 and was honored with the Talent Award in 2017. Stew and Amy talk about the importance of psychological safety at work in today’s knowledge-driven economy. Fresh, bold, and perhaps outrageous ideas need to be able to bubble up for organizations to be learning and innovating successfully. Amy describes the recipe for how managers can create a psychologically safe environment: set the stage by reminding people of the mission and their place in achieving it; invite people to contribute their thoughts, suggestions and questions; and respond productively and with curiosity about even the wackiest ideas. Teresa Scanlan was crowned Miss America 2011 on January 15, 2011 at the 90Anniversary of the Miss America Pageant on ABC.  Since her crowning, she has been traveling the country appearing on numerous national and local television programs, making corporate appearances, and talking about MAO's national platform, Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, and  her personal platform of Eating Disorders: A Generation at Risk. As Miss America 2011, Teresa has the special honor of serving as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals throughout her year of service.  As the Goodwill Ambassador, Teresa will help to raise funds and awareness for the over 170 CMN hospitals across the country. As the youngest Miss America in over 70 years, Teresa is showing the country she is a leader and a role model for youth today. Teresa was home-schooled until her junior year of high school, before attending Gering High School for half of her junior year. She graduated early from Scottsbluff High School in the spring of 2010 after taking a double load of classes throughout high school. Teresa's passion for her platform, to combat eating disorders, stems from a friend who struggled with bulimia. She did research about eating disorders for her friend and discovered how rampant it was across the nation. Teresa hopes to educate children and adults alike as to the signs and risks of eating disorders, as well as how and where to get help for themselves or a loved one. During 2011 pageant week, Teresa's piano performance of “White Water Chopped Sticks” won her the Talent Award on the third preliminary night. When her year is over, Teresa plans to attend Patrick Henry College to study Government. Her dream is to become an attorney and eventually a judge or President of the United States of America.
