Liz has conducted significant research in the field of leadership and collective intelligence and writes for Harvard Business Review, Fortune, and a variety of other business and leadership journals. A former executive at Oracle Corporation, over the course of 17 years, Liz was the Vice President of Oracle University and a global leader in Human Resource Development. Her management research and executive development firm The Wiseman Group is focused on developing leaders around the globe who can take on the world's toughest challenges. Her client list includes Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and Twitter. As you will see in this show, I met Liz when she spoke at Tesla and it resulted in one of the most memorable and emotional professional experiences in my life.  On the show, we dive into the concepts of Multipliers and Rookie Smarts and she tells personal insight stories that have helped make her the person she is today. She explains the interesting reason why she decided to leave Oracle, and how that planted the seed for one of her books. We discuss her insights as a mother of 4 and a busy professional, and how her world was changed when she realized the management skill she used at work is the exact same skillset she used at home. She also shares how and why she created labels in her books to help provide a framework and language to discuss what she calls the “undiscussable” - A multiplier is a genius maker and helps to activate everyone around them to be their best by spending their energy on extracting and extending the genius of others. A diminisher does the exact opposite, by restricting others and holding them back from showing their what she calls “native genius”. We will discuss this in detail, including giving an example of the “accidental diminisher” - someone who has positive intentions but inadvertently diminishes those around them. She also gives some sage advice for parents on how to balance life and family. I'm beyond thrilled to release today's show and can thank Liz enough for being my guest so please enjoy this episode of Insight Out! Burnout doesn't happen because of too much work. Liz Wiseman, an executive advisor, suggests it's something else entirely. We normally associate burnout with being overworked, but that's not actually the cause of it. Studies show that when you're working on something you feel passionate about — when you feel impact — you're often able to go on much longer and be more productive than when you're simply going with the motions. Executive advisor Liz Wiseman shares the difference between the kinds of people who burnout easily and those who self-generate a dynamic environment for themselves in the workplace. Leading In The Age of Deep Expertise Not everyone aspires to be a VP or higher someday, nor should they. But could it be that some of us are held back because the deep expertise that got us to our current position isn't what is needed to get to additional levels of responsibility? Or, if that additional responsibility is given to us anyway, we struggle to thrive because the skills to succeed at that next level are different from what we're used to? I think so, which is why I'm excited to introduce you to Wanda T. Wallace. Wanda is the author of an insightful book You Can't Know It All: Leading in the Age of Deep Expertise. In this episode, you're going to hear Wanda describe the difference between being an expert leader vs a spanning leader. She'll explain how the way we add value is different when we're a spanning leader. Wanda will talk about how to deal with mistakes--both when others make them as well as when we do. She'll talk about how to better deal with ambiguity that comes along with greater responsibility as well as how to develop trust across a boarder base of people. Before we're done Wanda will talk about executive presence and share some advice specifically for women. It's an engaging discussion with someone who specializes in helping women and men get to the top, stick, and thrive. Learn more about Wanda and her book at Leadership-Forum.com/wanda-wallace. She's the author of the New York Times bestseller Multipliers (which is one of my favorite books of all time), The Multiplier Effect, and Wall Street Journal bestsellers Rookie Smarts and Impact Players.    THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anybody who wants to become the person who takes action in situations that may be unclear or ambiguous instead of going through the motions until somebody else steps in.    TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… impact players approach situations that may be unclear or confusing with an outward perspective. They consider the playing field with curiosity and openness, which gives them the opportunity to transform a chaotic situation into a chance to learn and create impact.   WHAT  I  LOVE  MOST… managers don't really want to manage people, and people don't really want to be managed. The most valuable employees are self-managed and are able to figure out what things need to be done and then follow through on them.    Running Time: 30:54   Subscribe on iTunes   Check out the LinkedIn Live chat   Find Tiffani on Social: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn   Find Liz Online: Official Website Twitter LinkedIn   Liz's Book: Impact Players

Today's guest has been immersed in the hospitality industry since the age of 13. Will Guidara is the author of many books, including a new one called “Unreasonable Hospitality”. Will has been trained in the dining rooms of Tribeca Grill, Spago, and Tabla and opened the restaurants at the Museum of Modern Art. Will joins the host Dan Ryan to discuss his journey through hospitality and what it all means to him.   Takeaways:  Having board games along with fine dining provides an experience that makes the guest feel comfortable and at home. It reminds them of home-cooked meals and time with family and friends. Will has always had a passion for creating spaces where people can get together and enjoy being around friends and family. This is part of what led him to be in the hospitality industry.  America used to be a manufacturing economy but now 65% of our GDP is driven by the service industry. This means we have shifted the focus of our economy to be in the service industry and provide people with memorable experiences of hospitality. The culture of your company is a living, breathing tangible thing. It's not just part of a checklist; if you don't live by the cultures of your company, then the culture will die. The best way to talk about hospitality is to compare it to service. Service is bringing the right plate to the right person on time but hospitality is how you make them feel when you bring them their food.  Your values transcend everything. If you bring your values to the front and make them a core part of who you are, then those values will drive you and help you succeed.  Don't be afraid to look at yourself and tell yourself that you can handle anything that comes your way.   Quote of the Show: 9:24 “It has always brought me joy to create spaces where people can come together.”   Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/will-guidara-b64952243/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wguidara/?hl=en Book Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B13W5GPT/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0 Welcome Conference: https://www.thewelcomeconference.com/   Shout Outs: 1:36 The Nomad 05:47 Simon Sinek 25:39 James Cordon 25:43 Balthazar 25:51 Keith McNally 36:09 Rookie Smarts by Liz Wiseman Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ YouTube : https://youtu.be/o2-7Ko4_P9w

Today's guest is Liz Wiseman, author of New York Times bestseller Multipliers: How the Best Leaders Make Everyone Smarter, The Multiplier Effect: Tapping the Genius Inside Our Schools, and Wall Street Journal bestseller Rookie Smarts: Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work. Today's guest has extensive global experience in designing mixed use developments. He has a passion for design and uses that passion to create beautiful spaces. Host Dan Ryan is joined by Aaron Richter, The Senior Vice President of Design for Equinox Brands at Equinox to talk about hospitality and what it all means to him    Takeaways:  Having a good sleep cycle is incredibly important to having a productive day and keeping you on track. Building a community around your hospitality center and making it all in a walkable area is one way to feel a sense of community.  People don't go to hotels to drink at the pool anymore. Now, people are considerate of their health and want to travel to a place where they feel healthier and get a better experience.  Being social is an important part of your well being. You want to be a part of the community that you are in. You don't need to have your hospitality space be the “cool new thing” or be a different space for everyone. Instead, just build your space to the people you want to attract to the space. Make sure that you are showing appreciation for all the members of your team so they feel recognized and their hard work is being noticed.  When designing a hospitality space, you want to keep the guests on the property and part of that is by having everything be visible to the guests as they are more likely to engage with something if they can see it first. Quote of the Show:   13:34 “People are waking up again to the fact that oh I should take care of myself. My health is important. My immunity is important. This is all very topical and germane at the moment. People are saying I want to live a different way.”   Links:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaron-richter-7b7b45/ Website: https://careers.equinox.com/ Shout Outs:   0:40 Starwood  3:39 Barry Sternlicht 3:42 Park Lane Hotel 3:46 Patrick Jwuan 3:51 Vespa 11:09 Eurov 20:43 Josiah McKinsey 22:47 Dina Lamanna 22:49 HOK 23:00 Nike 23:09 Pottery Barn 24:30 “Rookie Smarts” by Liz Wiseman 25:07 John Hoke 32:18 Johnny Ives 32:19 Steve Jobs 46:23 Whole Foods 46:26 Trader Joe's  50:43 Seattle Mariners 51:00 Tiki Barber 1:00;18 Lone Tree Scout Reservation Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ Youtube : https://youtu.be/54p3A9mNfFA

Will Meyer is the Owner and Co-Founder at Meyer Davis Studios Inc. He believes that great design works on multiple levels and designs seamless physical experiences tailored to his clients individuality. Will joins host Dan Ryan to talk about his journey through #hospitality and what it all means to him. Takeaways:    When working in a partnership, it's important to have respect for the other person's ideas and recognize that it doesn't matter where the idea comes from as long as it is good. Residential and hospitality projects have similar demographics which can make for interesting design options.  Hospitality is an elevated sense of home. You want people to feel comfortable and connected to the elements in hospitality and have it feel welcoming. It's important to encourage people and make a special environment that allows them to grow and flourish.  The work that is done in the hospitality world tends to look like it is based on where it is and who it is about rather than being about the designer themselves. Using the environment as inspiration for your design in hospitality is something that creates an even better experience for guests and the community. Use design as a way to connect with guests and the surrounding areas.  Quote of the Show:   21:37 I look at hospitality as an elevated sense of the home. A heightened sense of residential comforts and elements that create a new space within the hospitality world that make people feel comfortable, make people feel inspired that create a new turning of the dial of their experience in hospitality. But grounded by that sense of residential home feel that makes people feel comfortable.” Links: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/will-meyer-7685677/ Website: https://www.meyerdavis.com/ Shout Outs:   1:01 David Gaddie 1:02 “A Beautiful Dreamer” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVCNh6_YpI8 3:30 HD Summit 3:57 Michael Bedner 3:59 Trish Wilson 5:55 “Rookie Smarts” by Liz Wiseman 7:35 Auburn University 8:42 David Raleigh 14:24 V Bar in Las Vegas 14:31 David Raybin 1 4:32 Will Regin 15:21 Venetian 17:10 Moss Farmhouse 28:30 Four Seasons 28:31 Mandarin Oriental 28:32 Rosewood 28:36 W Hotels 34:50 Baccarat Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ Youtube : https://youtu.be/phYIUjTnxwQ

Today's guest started her career in hospitality in a very unusual place; McDonald's! She focused on how architecture and design could connect with the customers at the restaurant. Now, Sarah Klymson is the Vice President of Product Brand Development at Hyatt Hotels. She joins host Dan Ryan to discuss her journey through #hospitality and how she views the industry.  Takeaways:    You can use architecture to create a warm and inviting feeling for guests when they come across a hotel or restaurant. The same can be done for design. Hospitality isn't just about providing a great service, it's also about inspiring your guests so that they take that inspiration with them when they leave. It's important to remain authentic and genuine in the hospitality industry. Staying with what makes your brand stand out is always important to keep.  Your hotel or restaurant should be more than just a destination. You want to bring something that no one else can bring to the table.  Being present in the moment is a beautiful feeling. It's important to take time to be away from all the technology and just relax.  Being intentional is the ultimate form of mindfulness. It's important to be aware of the things in your life that upset you and try to find a way to overcome those things and better yourself as a person. You can create a beautiful space, but the key point is making sure the experience itself is something that can change someone's life for the better.  Quote of the Show:   9:09 “One of the biggest things that I actually was reminded of this week when I traveled is how important inspiration is in a hospitality experience. Inspiring people and creating experiences for them that they will take into their lives. That's what hospitality is about. It's not just about caring for people and creating a wonderful experience when they're there, but it's also inspiring them, getting them to think about things in a different way.   When they go back into their normal lives, they take that sense of inspiration and hopefully it bleeds into other areas of their lives. I think that's really what's at the core. And I think that's why people are so passionate about this industry is because it inspires them. The sense of passion can come out and what we create either through design or the experiences that we create on property.” Links:   Twitter: https://twitter.com/sklymson LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarahklymson/ Website: https://www.hyatt.com Instagram: @sarahklymson   Shout Outs:   1:44 McDonald's 10:29: Miraval 14:46 Mark Hoplamazian 39:57 Hoffman Process 46:50 Jerry Seinfeld 54:05: Rookie Smarts  56:57 Vasu Dora Ways to Tune In:  Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPX Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386 Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1s Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419 Podbean: https://www.defininghospitality.live/ Youtube : https://youtu.be/Q6DiFfEeG-4

Key Points The #1 thing managers appreciate: when employees do things that need doing without being asked. Upward empathy is the ability to consider what the bosses situation feels like — and what they need from you. Pursuing your passion sounds nice in a commencement speech, but can get in the way of what the organization actually needs. A job description might be a starting point, but it's almost never the ending point. Beware of becoming the foosball player that does hard work in one spot, but misses the bigger picture. She is the CEO of the Wiseman Group, a leadership research and development firm. Some of her recent clients include Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Nike, Tesla, and Twitter. Liz has been listed on the Thinkers50 ranking and named one of the top 10 leadership thinkers in the world. Notes: Habits of high impact players: Learn the game Play where they are needed Play with passion Impact players have a good internal locus of control. They believe they have agency in their life. They believe they are in charge of their life. Liz said, “You have a lot more power than you might think you have.” Neil deGrasse Tyson said, “what you know is not as important as what you think.” If you aspire to have greater influence, start thinking like an impact player…don't just use the playbook. Adopt the impact player mentality as your ethos. Many leaders commented how much they learned thru the process of answering questions. Teaching others can be one of the greatest tools for learning in the world... Seeking feedback and guidance versus seeking validation. Impact players don't need validation. They crave feedback and guidance so they can continually improve. Say less: Play your chips wisely - Before an important meeting, give yourself a budget of poker chips where each chip represents a comment or contribution to the meeting. Be relevant, be evidence-based, be unique and additive, be succinct. Building credibility with leaders and stakeholders: Some credibility killers? Waiting for managers to tell you what to do, ignoring the bigger picture, tell your manager it's not your job. Some credibility builders? Doing things without being asked, anticipating problems, and having a plan. Instead of following your passion… Be useful. Make a name for yourself by running towards the problems and solving them. Make your boss's life easier. Be useful. Work on what's important for the people you work for… “The Diminisher is a Micromanager who jumps in and out. The Multiplier is an Investor who gives others ownership and full accountability.” “Multipliers invoke each person's unique intelligence and create an atmosphere of genius—innovation, productive effort, and collective intelligence.” “It isn't how much you know that matters. What matters is how much access you have to what other people know. It isn't just how intelligent your team members are; it is how much of that intelligence you can draw out and put to use.” “Multipliers aren't “feel-good” managers. One of the most crucial responsibilities of a leader is to grow more leaders. It's not something that is highlighted often enough! In her research, NY Times best selling author Liz Wiseman found that those who work to bring out the genius in others have a 2x impact on the results of the business. She called these folks “Multipliers”. She also discovered that those who diminish others reduce productivity by 48%. Most astonishing was that there was a proportion of well-intentioned leaders who were ‘accidental diminishers'. In our conversation we explore what we can do to avoid being an  accidental diminisher. Why you should listen: leadership skills and mindset for being a multiplier How your followers can read your mind and know your leadership mindset Why being an optimist all the time is bad leadership practice -  we also need to ‘signal the struggle' Embed this crucial leadership skill: There are three stages to learning to be a successful multiplier, starting with the three ‘whats' of delegation: what does good or great look like, what does ‘done' look like, and what's not in range for the task We explore leadership journeys from the classroom to the boardroom How Liz liked being bossy and that led to a career in teaching leadership How to overcome fear of losing control and diminished status if we become Multipliers One of the assumptions or practices we need to adopt as an MVP is to become a problem solver and not just a job holder.

Early in her career at Google, Eliana Murillo learned she had “rookie smarts.” When she first heard this from a manager, she was perplexed. Was this a compliment? Less so? Little did she know this flexible and hungry mindset was an absolute asset and that it would set her up for success in her 10 years at the company. Rookie smarts, a term written up by leadership expert Liz Wiseman, explores how being new and naive can be a benefit when it comes staying ahead in the workplace. “Sometimes when you’re a rookie you don’t even understand what failure means or don’t even know all the rules, so you just go for it,” Murillo said in a recent episode of Moneda Moves. As it turns out, this kind of smarts was embedded in Murillo’s approach for quite some time. Prior to her first corporate job, she’d taken on a variety of ideas from impromptu business at garage sales as a child to selling chocolate- covered strawberries in college. At Google, she started the first Latinx employee resource group, HOLA. Since then, Murillo founded more formal companies from the national network, Latinas Who Brunch, and her family business based out of Mexico, Tequila Alquimia. A champion of Latina bosses, we sat down to talk with serial entrepreneur and former Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient Murillo about what it is exactly that fuels her work and why she’s decided to now start a company of her own, Eliment and Company. This episode is done in partnership with The Mujerista, the digital-media publication and network dedicated to empowering and celebrating the next generation of Latinas making an impact on la cultura. Why Learning Beats Knowing in the New Game of Work Interview by Chicke Fitzgerald of the Game Changer Network as a part of the Best of the Game Changer series, showcased on C-Suite Network. The original live interview was 3/11/16. In a time of constant change, success depends on seeing the world through rookie eyes, and in this essential guide, the bestselling author of Multipliers explains why we are often at our best when we are doing something for the first time—and how to reclaim and cultivate this curious, flexible, youthful mindset called Rookie Smarts. Leadership expert Liz Wiseman argues that the most successful rookies are hunter-gatherers—alert and seeking, cautious but quick like firewalkers, and hungry and relentless like frontiersmen. Most importantly, she identifies a breed of leaders she refers to as “perpetual rookies.” Despite years of experience, they retain their rookie smarts, thinking and operating with the mindsets and practices of these high-performing rookies. In a rapidly changing world, experience can be a curse. Being new, naïve, and even clueless can be an asset. Rookies are unencumbered, with no baggage to weigh them down, no resources to burden them, and no track record to limit their thinking or aspirations. For today's knowledge workers, constant learning is more valuable than mastery. Rookie Smarts addresses the questions every experienced professional faces: “Will my knowledge and skills become obsolete and irrelevant? Will a young, inexperienced newcomer upend my company or me? How can I keep up?” The answer is to stay fresh, keep learning, and know when to think like a rookie. Rookie Smarts isn't just for professionals seeking personal renewal; it is an indispensable resource for all leaders who must ensure their workforce's remains vital and competitive.
